I started with the Guardiola esque IFB-L(S)-BPD(D)-IFB backline but the long shots of the libero were incredibly off putting. I changed him to a regular CB-D and made the LB an IWB(D) because again, the long shots on a support duty were frustrating, especially when I'd see the more technical players (the 4 attackers) moving it around just for the defender to smash it from range lmao.

The rest of my set up is quite similar to yours too, with a winger support on the left wing, an AM(S) behind the striker, and a W(A) on the right, all behind an AF up top. My midfield pairing is a SV(A) at DMCL and a DLP (S) at DMCR. It produces some good football but I find the striker role is very hard to get right. I'm also not yet entirely convinced by the defend duties all across the back line, so I may switch to an IWB(S) again and see if he fares a bit better.

The only thing I would say is that big away games it seems to struggle, The rotations are fantastic when they're pulled off, but I'm finding a lot of frustration in terms of building effective attacks in these games. I've considered switching to something more traditional, but it feels a tad redundant to focus on getting a certain profile of player just to ditch it in the big games. I think if I could crack these games for my team I'd be able to move on to a different team in my save.

I think it's due to tempo and player attribute, my Libero take long shot too but a lot of it become goal, I saw a lot of people and myself too use the trick of lower overall tempo of the team and only alliow take risk and direct pass in some advance position (for example: 1 or both advance midfield, 1 or both winger). Width from both wing to open up space in middle help too. But generally, the 325 shape is not perfect. Is very good help limit counter attack chance but can frustated you in attack due to the lack of movement in final third.

  2. Man, tried this tactic for a number of games and it looks promising. Offensively, this is one of the most consistently goal-produced JDP-inspired tactic I have seen, created, or tried. I think the reason is you using a heavy, rigid attacking structure with lots of TI/PI across your front 4 + stay wider ins of your winger and a pretty wider shape. It created lots of space, and the lower tempo helped your player use that space at full capacity.
Using a player in CM instead of SVa is superior in build-up I must say, although the SV create a better settle-defense shape, having a space early for Libero pushing up is crucial in build-up phase. I changed the distribution to the other centre back and it helps Libero push up even more frequently.
However, because of the expansive nature of your shape in attack, the pressing is not elite. There is huge horizontal space between the first and second lines of pressing that is easy to cut through if the team has a decent ball playing backline. The push-up more ins help the defensive line aggressively regain long ball back, but when the press is by pass, the opponent easily cuts through my defense with players dropping deep, playing one-two, and having the third man run into space due to the defensive push-up. I tried to fix the press by removing the mark tightly, adding close down more, and addi ng a mark-specific DL/DR to both wingers. It definitely helps the press, but the winger is a little bit narrower. I definitely like this approach more
After fixing the press we currently concede 15 goal in 24 games, quite good and we haven't lost yet.

can this work with an iw(s) and If(s) on the flank instead of both  winger ?  does the winger cross often ?

You can have a lot of freedom with your attacking 5 in term of roles if you have 3-2 rest defense. IF or IW worked fine if you instructed them to stay wider. Sometimes I even added a hold position for them to take more touch and wait for AMC or SV to arrive in half space. A winger with great teaching attributes thrives in that role, someone like Silva, Grealish, or Sancho.

Just wondering is it possible to change the role of the striker and still get the same results? I was thinking either a PF or a TF but I'm not sure if they can still create the same attacking formation.

I have good results with both PFa and DLFs in the possession system; the AMC definitely helps him not get too isolated, using fairly narrow help too.

  5. Your tactic looks very secure. I think Gavi's dropping deep trait makes him a better option in the RPM role, which is someone in whom I always imagine moving vertically and participating in all phases of the game.
3-2 shape has enough players to build up through the middle so maybe change the left side to WB(a). I just feel weird about using 6 players in a buildup like the 4-2 shape . It's a high tempo, quick short pass style that led to an end-to-end game.
And how is Fati doing, been using a lone striker with 2 wingers, and I always find him very isolated, even with cut inside.

  6. looks promising; have you ever tested the Volante instead of the Mezzala since it offers greater coverage in a settled defense? I use the same backline as you and this is the best combo to replicate the 3-2 shape.
How is the CFa performing? Is he the main goal scorer or it's the IFa. I tried many roles for striker in a 433 but it seems he got isolated too much. And how is the width of your team with the narrow system, do your wingers need to have stay wider instruction?

But my defence was ******. Do you have any advice on how to balance things using offensive mentality but still being pretty sound in defence?

For me to balance risk between att and def you need to balance your width in possession and out of possession. Generally, positional play philosophy recommend team to have maximum width possible when you have the ball to use the pitch at full capacity.
On the other hand, you want to stay as compact as possible when defending, both vertically and horizontally. So you have a dilemma: you want maximum width in possession, but when you lose the ball, you want your team to have a close distance when you lose the ball. In real life, using "overload to isolate" is one way to solve this dilemma. You heavily attack 1 side of the pitch (left or right), then quickly switch to your wide attacker on the other side. This can be done in FM, but they hardly perform this trick consistently.
You can narrow your system and only keep your wings wide; that'll solve your leaking defense. Having your players closer together in the defense phase ensures that if 1 defender gets a pass, the other will have less space to cover.
The other thing you can do is to have a good rest defend shape; at least you have to cover the middle lanes and force them to go wide when they're counterattacking.
TDLR: narrow your system help ball recover, have a good 3-2 rest defend make you comfortable up the mentality between positive and very attacking.

  8. I actually prefer the 3-2 shape to be wider; ideally, it should cover all 5 lanes in buildup. There should be no more than 2 players in the vertical line and no more than 3 in the horizontal line. But in defense, I want it to be a bit more narrow. Balancing width in both attack and defense in positional play really troubled me recently.
Positional play in this version is a big upgrade but it can improve. Lots of time, my team can't use the spare man in build-up efficiently or they can't spread the player effectively in build-up, making the whole thing more like a cosmetic feature

  9. I ran a few tests with different combos, and my conclusion is that even with using mezzala or central mid to do overlap or underlap run, it is usually not as effective as FB/WB overlap simply because they are normally slower than FB/WB.
I might reconsider my attacking front 5/6, though, because ifb, libero combo is a very stable combo when forming the 3-2 in rest defense, but front 5 may lack a little bit of pace to break down the opponent.

  10. OMG, I have the same question. For me, overlapping runs are a great automatism to unlock defense and I'm struggling to replicate that without attacking FB/WB. Since using 3-2 build up with 2 IFB and Libero, I have to switch to underlapping run with central mid-attack, and it's just not as effective. I tried with mezzala, but they just don't combine with IFs to make overlapping runs often enough.

And how do you guys improve your attack, I mean, my 5 Attacking players do score, but a lot of the time it comes from individual abilities, long shots,... Underlapping run do happen with central midfield, but they often shoot rather than pass the ball to free agents
