I appreciate it, @Cloud9, but I've quickly come to the realisation that I just cannot enjoy playing FM24 anymore.
Playing this game does my mental health more harm than good, and failing at a team with such high expectations from the start was only making it worse. I've been in very tough situations before and persevered, but this was causing another level of stress that no video game should cause. In truth, I only came on the tactics forum as a last resort - a last chance to save my save before I rage-quitted for the final time.
I can understand the suffering because the game can make you feel like you are bad but remember your players need time for a change of style.
When I feel bad about the game I read this thread again. Is very helpful:

Something like this then?
Honestly, I was really tempted to go back to 433 because of this set-up. It's another one where 3-2-4-1 in possession can be created super easily. So either from 4-2-3-1 or 433 you could transition into the overpowered 3-2-4-1 attacking shape. In the end I stuck with 4-2-3-1 just because its a tad more versatile in my opinion. To go from narrow attack to wider (with wingback on right) it just takes fewer adjustments to the overall tactic. In 4-2-3-1 all I do is change the roles of the DM (to HB) and right IFB to Wingback (A) or Fullback (A). And besides I have too many good attacking midfield players to know what to do with But both formations are great when it comes to Positional Play.
It looks like this:
But depending on the opposition, sometimes I end up using this:
SpoilerI was using the 4231 before this, but I changed to the 433 because I found we were too slow and predictable during build-up. My hypothesis was that it is because we lacked 1 player during build-up (the AM).
- I'm happy with the IF + IW on the flanks because I like the "minimum width" concept (they are wide because of the positional play feature). But I may try the "wrong-footed" wingers in the future.
- I was using an AF before; I started using the DLFa just for experimental purposes And I like it. He does a good mix of dropping back for build-up and runs in behind. I really like it when he drops and both IF and APa (and sometimes IWs) attack the space.
- I did not find trouble with the back 3 shape using the IWBs. Can't understand why it was odd for you.

Wow, your ideas looks almost exactly like what I'm doing but with a 4-3-3. Even with the WB(a) when facing a parked bus and going 3-1-5-1.

The 2 attacking roles upfront behind 3 supporting is a "theory" I follow too. But instead of an AP(s) I like to use an AP(a). He still supports but sometimes attacks the box too and you end up having a balanced front five with players running in behind and others coming deep, creating passing angles and tough decisions to opposition defenders.
Front 5 line: [A - S - A - H - S]. (H for hybrid, attack/support duty)
Edit:
Sometimes, when I feel opposition is happy just defending I like to overload one flank by going 3-1-6. Swapping one IFB into a WB(a) and the Libero back to a simple Centre Back or Ball Playing Defender.

I'm looking forward too. I was playing 4231 and wanting to create the 3-2-5 but ended up changing to a 433. Maybe because I'm 4 seasons in and doing well but I found teams started to play low block against me and during the build-out phase we were slow and predictable. I thought it was because I have -1 player during the build-up (the AM). I'm a bit more satisfied with the 4-3-3, but I miss the 4231 because is my favorite shape.

Teamwork, Work Rate, Stamina and Natural Fitness I would say are absolutely key.
I adhere to this. They need the teamwork to follow instructions, work rate to do it no matter what and stamina to sutain it for the 90 mins. I would add aggression as a plus or bonus because is like their natural drive to be involved in challenges.

Does it makes sense to focus play down the flank where the opposition is using an Inverted Wingaback or Attacking Wingback to take advantage during the transition when they just lost possession? Or focus play instruction only kicks in once the attacking transition is over?

If the youngsters are academy kids I would give them extra benefit of the doubt
To simplify: The ability to do one aspect of the game well is a strong indicator of a future squad player!
Great! I think this is the kind of answer I was looking for. Thanks!

Thanks for the detailed answer!

I'm definetly not in the wonderkid hunting recruitment style. I'm actually trying to develop youngsters. But not sure what to do with the ones that once 18 y/o don't look great (or how to tell if they look "ok", or "not bad") but the coaches think they still have potential to grow.

Depends on your tactical style (defensive styles are less forgiving w/youngsters), but the main indicator is that they are at least 18 years old (where they can start to benefit fully from first team game time).
I would say a common pitfall many FM managers fall into is an over reliance on young players within their squads. Building a backbone of senior pros can allow you to bring in young players as rotation options/off the bench, where you can slowly blood them into the team. You'll also have mentors who can mould them into professional individuals. I'd recommend looking more at what a youngster is now than the lure of potential. Yes they will develop, but the core of the player is there by 18 (if they don't fit your tactical approach now, they likely won't in the future either).
This prevents a drop in first team form and helps avoids hampering the development of the u23 players in your squad.
Thanks for the answer but I'm still unsure about a few things.
- You can know a wonderkid is a wonderkd but what about the future "squadplayerkid" or "regularstarterwithalotofeffortkid". Which is a good attribute level to consider a player is ready for first time football? One or two points behind of what you will look for a senior regular starter?
- Lets say we have two 18 years old. A looks a bit better than B so I loan out B and I keep A as a rotation option/off the bench. Will B progress more thanks to more Regular Starter football than A, who was better but will have fewer game time?

How can I assess if a young player is ready for first team football? Should I check if his key attributes are at least at an average level? (using the averages from the comparison page).

It's like the Rolling Stones playing live but without Mick Jagger because he went on holiday. The other frontman will know the lyrics but the band will not be the same.

Lovely! I love a tactic post with sensible explanation behind each team instruction. I would love to be that meticulous too.

Are you at least watching the games or just rushing trough seasons?

Think of the players as little pets. Only praise them right after they've done something well or warn them right after they've done something wrong.
I only praise a player's performance in the last game when they've assisted, scored, or had a rating of 7.5 or higher. If they've scored, you praise them using that option; if they've assisted, you do the same. If they've had a rating of 7.5 or higher and you don't know why, check their player form for the last game. Maybe they made a good number of key passes, so you praise their directness, or they completed a good number of passes, so you praise their good choice of passing.
I only warn players with a rating of 6.4 or lower, checking their form stats or what I saw during the match.
Every Friday, you receive a training report. I praise every player with a rating of 7.75 or higher for the work they've put in during the week, and I warn players with a rating lower than 6.4 to criticize their effort.

Saying all that, if I’m getting spanked like 5-0 or something, it’s going straight onto Key and there’ll be tears, things thrown followed by a rollicking after it.
Yeah, that sounds like me in any highlight option.

I'm really liking this. I was familiar with the rest defence concept but very interested on reading more about the rest attack.

Haha sorry I meant "hold shape" team instruction Fixed it
I kind of agree. I don't use hold shape, but hate with my heart the "Counter" instruction. You click "Counter" and your DM or DMs suddenly think they are Erling Haaland and you have no holding midfielders any more.

I found Distribute to Centrebacks + Fullbacks is the best way, at least for me, to ask your GK to start his build-up. You are not limiting him. If the CBs are marked, he will go to the FBs. If CBs and FBs are marked he will go long. It's the best balance of risk I could find.

I play always on comprehensive but I feel I'm rushing it sometimes. So I'm thinking on going down to Full Match to learn more about my team, tacitcs and football in general. (Also because I want to change carreer IRL to Tactic Analyst, so I hace to start practicing somewhere 😅)

I'll assume this is an issue due to your screen resolution. I built the skin within a minimum resolution of 1920x1080. Loading it on my laptop-screen just shows the empty page you posted.
Oh, I came for the same problem. And my resolution is lower than that. I would love to only have the stars replacing the attributes. How can I do that?

But that’s a good start. How are his stats?
18 set pieces, 19 determination. He is a regen because is a save from FM23. Felix Lecat, and is french. Felix The Cat
And only 35 y/o. I like to think he is a former footballer, the injuries forced his retirement and then he became the best Set Piece coach on the planet.

But my main player for SV role is good physically, not very good technically.
Good physicals are very useful for lower leagues. I would try it and see what happens

I have one of the best, he is in charge of the entirety of the set pieces. Good jumpers, average set piece takers and the last season we were top of the league in set piece goals. BUT the only routine we do is the near post one. I would like to have more variety.
