Fire rained down, the thunderous earth moved and shifted beneath the behemothic tumult above. No quarter was given or asked, the Latin and the northern battles knew no equal as the protagonists fought it out. Battle raged longer than anyone expected and in the shifting mists of the battlefield, the victors emerged.
...and breathe. If you have any fingernails left, let them grow a bit before Sunday and then demolish the rest.
What a breathtaking couple of semis. Both were played at a high level of intensity and both went to extra time, the Spain Italy game to penalties and we have our finalists.
Very well done to Italy and England who both deserved their wins and commiserations to Spain and Denmark.
The scoring was comparatively low, of course, as there were only two games, so the bonuses became more significant. Only five of our band of brothers did not predict the England win, while Scott, Orzalek (who napped the score!), CFuller and YouReds were the only ones to get the score right.

Only three unfortunates failed to score any points on the bonuses and very well done to av3ry who correctly predicted the exact time of the first goal for 10 bonus points. Phnompen also receives five bonus points for being closest to the time of the second goal.
Mutters remains our overlord and holds on to his lead, although Lucas has galloped up from mid to lower table obscurity in the last two rounds to second place, thanks to a mixture of good predictions and healthy bonus points. Av3ry is our hero of the week, rising a whopping 19 places, thanks to his bonuses score and very well done to him - he is now in an ideal position to challenge at the very top. With winners, there has to be losers and JJ our previous leader slips two places to fourth and Phil drops one place to fifth.
Coming up strongly and with a giant leap into the top ten, YouReds climbs an impressive 13 places, thanks to a good bonus score. Razzie is moving the opposite way, a further slip this round of four places, while Scott starts to put him under more pressure with a rise of six places. Darius and I slip two places each to complete the top ten. Pushing hard for the top ten and equal in points to me and Darius, Orzelek (down one place), Constantine and Rebs continue to press.
Hazzaj also continues his downward trend, falling a further 10 places to 14th. The mutinous dog Craig, his co-conspirator Pompey and Phnompen all rise in the table, thanks to good bonus scores. DanielM is a non mover in 18th position and poor old DJ collapses 14 places to 19th with one of the lowest scores of the round (you think that's bad - wait until we get to the bottom of the table!) Henrik luckily is spared some embarrassment by being so close to DJ with a daunting fall of 11 places. Wolfie didn't do himself any favours with a poor score and a fall of six places to 21st.
Deeper in mid table, VP drops one place, while GunmaN rises three places and AM continues his mini-revival with a further rise, this time up a satisfying seven places. Rob suffers a small hiccup to his impressive turn of fortunes, with a fall of one place, while Whoopy and Dale also suffer one place and seven place falls. CF does himself no harm with a rise of four places but The Golden Boy continues to go backwards with a fall of six. The old git Southcoastred remains in 30th place and retains some semblance of decency.
Oh dear. Swimming in the sewage and silage pit at the bottom, late contributor Oriole scores a whopping zero points and gives us all a timely reminder that if you join late, you can't be considered for the bonuses. McBB doesn't do much better but at least he scored a point. No respite in site for Oche, as he drops four places after also scoring only one point. Timma, struggling for breath at the bottom lifts himself one place, TrueBlue remains in the same position in 35th, while Decapitated rises one place at the expense of Jaggie, who falls one to 37th.
Poor old Reddiablo and Carambau remain rooted to the bottom with further no entries and we may not see them again, although the bonuses on offer for the final will be enough to allow anyone to win.
So, fireworks and beer baths for our winners and laser light retinal detachments for our losers.

Quarter finals done and dusted. Another exhausting round of nerve and derring-do in the glorious, successful and vain and futile search for the elusive semi-final spots.
Battle engaged, battle raged, battle won, battle over...and breathe.
There were very few who correctly predicted the Switzerland Spain result but there was far more success in the Belgium Italy and Czech Republic Denmark game. Mixed outcomes for the England game, mostly due to the unexpected margin of victory but most people correctly predicted an England win. Top marks for Lucas for achieving his second nap of the tournament for the England score. I scored the only other nap of the round for my second nap of the tournament.
The top scorers for the round, with 10 points each, were me, Wolfie and AM. Before we take the bonuses into account, of course.

The bonuses were very generous for the quarter finals and that was deliberate - it was to give everyone hope and something to aim for, knowing that however far down the table, there is always a chance at redemption and moving into a challenging position and so it proved. Muttley, front and centre! A correct prediction of five penalties scored a massive 40 points and catapulted him from 32nd position - seven from the bottom, to top of the table. Very well done Mutters. He becomes our new (and let's be honest hugely unexpected) new leader and he who must be obeyed.
Very well done to Rob who, along with the bonuses was second highest scorer with 29 and he is starting to make those times near the bottom of the table look like an ephemeral nightmare.
Almost everyone scored one or more bonuses expect me (how did that happen?), Jaggie Jagster and Depacitated, which is disappointing for all three of us.
At the top of the table, Muttley takes pride of place, while JJ and Razzie drop one place each, Phil moves up one to fourth and DJ slips one. Hazzaj, our leader for two rounds falls a further five to sixth place. Darius moves up three thanks to a good bonus score and despite having the joint highest, non-bonus score, I fall five places as a consequence of failing to score any bonus points - remember, bonuses are important folks.
Henrik drops one place and orzelek climbs two to complete the top ten.
Just outside the top ten it is heating up. Lucas, Constantine and Rebs are in equal place with orzelek and breathing hard down his neck for a top ten place - all made very acceptable moves - Lucas up five places and Constantine and Rebs up seven places. As a consequence Scott suffers a fall of three places and coming up fast behind him, Wolfie rises a very decent 11 places to sit within three places of Scott. Craig, despite his outrageous attempt at a thread take-over last time, climbs seven places - who says crime doesn't pay?
His fellow conspirator, Pompeyboyz falls eight places to sit in 17th while DanielM also suffers a mid-table fall of five places. The rest of mid-table was very mixed. YouReds is up three, phnonpen is down six, while VP. and Av3ry are up three. Special mention to VP. - a couple of rounds ago he was second bottom and rolling in the sludge and mud in the deep depths of the table and has since risen a huge 17 places in two rounds to sit mid-table - very well done laddie.
The Golden Boy falls eight places but perennial bottom feeder Rob jumps an impressive 14 places to ease his relegation fears. It's not always bad Rob! WoopyD falls eight places and needs to halt the slide, while GunmaN slips a disastrous 19 points, despite picking up a bonus. Oriole remains in 27th position but McBB continues the slide, down a further seven places. Oche remains in 29th place, while the old git is still struggling to get moving (sounds like every morning for him), although he rose one place.
Getting dangerously near the bottom, AM eases his relegation fears by rising six places, while CFuller does himself no harm with a rise of two. Timma. Timma has completed the FA Cup and Division Two prediction league double this year but he has dropped a devastating 15 places. The step up to international level proving a jump too far perhaps.
Dale drops a disappointing four places, TrueBlue falls a dispiriting seven places, while in the dregs of the table, Jagster, that hero of the premier league predictions thread, falls one place, Decapitated also falls one, while Reddiablo falls to second bottom after another DNE. Carambau was the other DNE and stays rooted to the very bottom,
So, still all to play for and everyone has the potential to make big moves - down as well as up! (Memo to self - remember, bonuses are important!)

Phew! I think we may not have caught our breaths back after that. The mayhem and the chaos that is so casually and non-threateningly termed "the round of 16" gave no indication of the drama, the excitement, the bitter disappointment and the tears to come. Once we got over @craigcwwe's mutinous attempt at taking over the thread, ably assisted by @Pompeyboyz, we managed at last to get back to the football.
The scoring was very variable and with fewer games to predict, the overall scores were always going to be lower than in previous rounds. Unsurprisingly, nobody predicted the Croatia Spain or the France Switzerland goal fests and there were no naps at all for this round. Due to the predicted low scoring (by us, not the teams) a number of bonuses were added to allow those lower in the table to have some chance of making big gains and to maintain interest throughout the rest of the tournament. This resulted in two outcomes - some of those who scored well on the bonuses made huge leaps up the table and secondly it added a level of excitement all through the table with some big movers.
The bonus scores on offer were as follows:
Penalties – 9 - correct 40 points, 5 each way 5 points
Matches going to extra time – 4 – 5 points
Matches going to penalties – 1 – 5 points
There was no correct answer for the penalties, so nobody won the (very) generous offer of 40 points.
The scoring remained very tight at the top of the table as each of the top five scored bonus points. The round winner, without bonuses was, ahem, me with nine points. The overall winners, with a stonking 15 points were Constantine, JJ and Phil, Very well done to them, all assisted by 10 bonus points. They were closely followed by me, Razzie, Henrik and VP. with 14 points each.
We have a new leader however and our beloved JJ takes the honours this week and is to be exalted, obeyed and consulted as our new predictions league Caesar. Very well done JJ.
Razzler moves up two places to second and I move up two places to join him in second. DJ drops one place and Phil moves up one to 5th. Hazzaj our two rounds in a row leader drops five places after a disappointing score and no bonuses. Big moves for Gunman and Henrik. Gunman climbs 10 places and straight into the top ten and Henrik leaps a massive 13 places to 8th (yes I know Constantine - we will get to you later).
Pompey is a non-mover in ninth (lucky not to penalised points after joining, aiding and abetting Graig's attempted mutiny but some recognition for editing a post without it looking edited!). and Darius moves up one place to complete our top ten placings.
Buzzing just out the top ten are Scott, up six places (although he is on the same points as Darius), Orzelek, DanielM, Phnompenhandy (who moved down six places) and The Golden Boy, who are all just two points behind, with The Golden Boy the only one of that group to pick up a bonus, which lifted him an impressive nine places.
Lucas drops nine to sixteenth and lucky he didn't fall further after failing to enter, despite four (yes four!) reminders. His unique, creative and imaginative reason...he forgot! and yet, although this is clearly stated in the thread - it was Rediabblo who failed to enter - many apologies Lucas - but I looked from mod to mod, and from mod to mod, and from mod to mod again; but already it was impossible to say which was which.
Whoopy D falls one place to 17th despite picking up a bonus, while Timma climbs two places after also scoring a bonus.
Constantine - this is your time! Biggest mover of the round went to Constantine, with a sensational jump of 16 places, thanks to an above average score and 10 bonus points. Very well done (there, it was worth waiting for).
In mid-table Rebs falls a disappointing 10 places while McBB climbs an impressive 10 places, thanks to a decent bonus haul. YouReds moves up two again, thanks to a bonus score and Craig falls nine places after a poor score and an even poorer attempt to distract from this by attempting a thread hijack!
VP. leaves the bottom feeders behind with a huge leap of 14 places to 24th, while Av3ry moves down six places. Wolfie remains unchanged in 26th and oriole moves down a punishing nine places, partly explained by his late entries.
Just of out of reach of the bottom but with the threat of moving down ever present, TrueBlue falls six places, oche and Dale both drop two places after poor scores, while the old git SouthCoastRed climbs one place and Muttley climbs two places.
Oh dear, at the bottom there was a lot of movement, mostly down to be honest. Rediabblo failed to enter (it's a mod thing) and suffers a deserved eight point drop - four reminders!
