i can't express my gratitude m8! thanks thanks thanks thanks! its not that i believe im good at tactics in FM, not at all. I just couldn't believe that what we saw with Pep's Barcelona everybody said that its high tempo that makes the passes work fast and smart. It was a so definite "no" , i even watched the Real-Barca 2-6 game again yesterday, even though i play this tactic for close to a week, and saying is this team a high tempo team? its not. Look at their touches on the ball, they might had 3-4 touches on the ball, they passed it quick only when Madrid had energy in the first half. I learned to upload videos on youtube just to not hear anyone saying that it can't be, i thought they wouldn't believe it works.
thanks also for the specific adjustements, i ll try those for sure (although i dislike the inverted wingback xD ). The mezzala phenomenon will be my focus from now on with the France squad cause there i can use players with, maybe, more aggresion, if its down to an attribute, or a CM(A) cause maybe he stops being so aggressive a little bit before his run, i dont know, only theories on my mind.
Of course, i suppose, someone can play this style with different systems. I hope we see an other tactic with the same style appear someday.
What you note about PI's seemed strange to me from when i used to download plug n play tactics and ok some times we may need a split block so we use close down more to some players, even when a team does it from TI's. But it was strange for me too, why some tactics, like the one here, play good with pass shorter added for all players (excluding the DLP).
you gave me such a joy m8!
Pleasure
Yea, with your comment about tempo on FM - to be honest, I think it is something the game has not really nailed on very well. Your point about tempo is very valid from my point of view. When i use high tempo, i tend to see more long passes as well because i think players hurry to pass the ball and at a higher tempo, they just hoof the ball or play it where they like. however when you use low tempo, i believe what it is telling the players is to prioritise possession - remember in the older FMs like fm16 and fm15 - there was a TI called retain possession or something like that - i think this is the same as low tempo in fm19 and fm20 - the developers have just tweaked it. so in summary, low tempo is the way forward on fm20 to keep possession. also, if you read the instruction of the low tempo - it says "...taking their time with the ball and often retaining possession in order to persevere control of the game." this loosely translates to retain possession. of course, some argue that too much of a low tempo cannot unlock defence - well, i think this is not case. with low tempo and a creative team, you will split defences as much as any team - just like the barca team of 2011 - when you watch them, the pace of their play slows down during build up but once they reach the final 3rd, they split the defence into bits - there is a patient pattern in their play that enables them shift the other team around and create overloads which frees up their attackers (David Villa and Pedro and also an overlapping Dani Alves).
with regards to inverted wing backs, i only use them because i am more of a defensive player than my team reflects because i try always all the time to prevent counter attacks and also to overload midfield. sometimes i do use the traditional wing backs in case i am facing a different type of team especially when i really need goals if i am down by more than 2 goals.
another thing, i tried using a poacher if i am dominating a smaller reputation side - i discovered that the poacher is able to pin down the defenders in the box and also gets a lot of tap ins. you can try this idea if you find a stubborn defence.
cheers m8

just played against napoli away. i got two goals and won, the first was with the tactic as showned before and the other is mirrored. i did that cause my OI's demanded my exploit IF(a) to defend, so i mirrored the tactic after 65 to make involving in the game more natural for my attacking line and of course i subbed my IF's with two left footed.
1st goal, right footed IF's
2nd goal left footed IF's
Hey m8, so I tested the tactic and it works nice - just as you laid out. Also, my mezzala got into goal scoring positions frequently but his finishing was also quite misplaced several times. Not sure why. the only thing i realised is that i got counter attacked through the middle quite often so i had to reduce the defensive width and also make one of the central backs (the one on the right) not stay wide during transition and consolidation of play. also, nice play interaction inside opponents box. the left centre back still has stay wide so when the you have the ball, the wing back goes and the centre back occupies that space and then the HB may drop back giving a nice flat 3 with space to pass and evade opponents' press. also i tried using the right back as inverted and when i did it gave me a nice midfield balance as well - i just like the inverted wing back as a preference sometimes.
the other reason i believe this tactic works well is that i believe to achieve very good passing game, you can only do it with PIs and not Tis - i realised Tis don't have as much effect especially when it comes to passing shorter.
I had a similar tactic before however when i employed shorter passing with Tis, it worked much better.
Good tactic!

sure m8. here are the roles and TI's
as for PI's lets begin
WB(s): sit narrower, close down more, tackle harder
WB(a): stay wider, close down more, tackle harder
CB(c): pass it shorter, stay wider, take more risks
CB(d): pass it shorter, stay wider, take more risks
Dlp(s): close down more, tackle harder
Mezz(a): close down more, tackle harder, pass shorter
If(a): close down more, tackle harder, pass shorter, stay wider
If(s) close down more, tackle harder, pass shorter, sit narrower, get further forward
F9: close down more, tackle harder, pass shorter
i have two sets of attackers, for my team and overall ppm's and movements, both IF must play on the same leg. If my IF's are right footed i play the system the way you see it here, if they are left footed i mirror the tactic so IF(a) and Mez(a) are on the left and WB(a) is on the right.
If you try it tell me please if your mezzala scores more goals than mine. he gets tons of headers alone in the area but for some reason his conversion rate is so much low and its Savic, i mean the guy is 1.90, composure 20, header 17, jump 17. In every game he sends headers to the GK. When i play mirrored i ve seen some goals, maybe its the foot of Savic and how he prepares for the jump? i cant tell, only assume :/
Nice, I will give it a go and let you know the outcome. Cheers m8

When it comes to the match engine, you absolutely have the right to be dissatisfied and complain about it if you believe it's flawed, but not in this tactical section. Instead, you can post any complaints you may have about the ME in relevant forum sections: here or here.
Thank you.
Ok, sure - thank you for letting me know.

enemys defence is so narrow they don't even spread at the line of the GK area. is it a parked bus, a defensive team or a sloppy defending? either way, defence broken. Gaya my dearest LB in the game for some time, came at 33 yo for free
The only reason I play FM is to watch the game played in a beautiful way - seems you must be enjoying the beauty of your team play - would you mind sharing a screenshot of the tactical structure and player instructions?

Kindly please check for MAC specs as there was an issue with graphic that affected a lot of mac users last year.
Thanks

In FM2019, a lot of us had an issue where wingers are more likely to stay inside defensive channels and not wide enough to the touchline in order to split the channels between defending full backs and the centre backs next to them allowing marauding midfielders to run into.
I am suggesting that wingers to be given the option to (possibly as an option) to stick to the wings in a stationary position. I know that this can be done with PPM learned overtime, however some players do not learn this trait for some reason and it does not also work.
The case in point of a Leroy Sane movement. In the diagram attached, you can see clearly Sane and Sterlings arrow pointing towards the byline - at this time, this is not possible to achieve on FM19. Kindly take this into consideration.

Will it be possible to have views at the same time for the below:
- Individual players wages by year
- Individual players wages by week
At the moment, it is not possible to do this in the settings. This will allow FM players to be able to calculate or rather "amonize" clearly players wages over the entire contract period. If this happens, FFP will also be easy to avoid and financial management becomes easier. At the moment, switching views is very annoying.
Thanks

So guys, we know that man city attack in a 2-3-5, a formation that can be achieved in fm in some ways. The easiest is obvs having wingbacks wide and forward and the insideforwards in the halfspaces, but i found this too predictable and one dimensional. Having the wingers wide and the 8s in the halfspaces makes this tactic so interesting
I am trying my best to replicate this and with this formations i'm having some kind of succes and a lot of goal like this
in the 4th image willock is a mez(s), not a mez(a)
the roles
SKd (i don't have a Ederson type keeper, otherwhise i would use a SKs)
IWBd BPD BPD
IWBs
MEZs DLPd MEZa (using the dlp in the midfield trio makes the mezzalas plays in the right position for me)
Ws Ws (cross from byline and hold position PIs for both, it makes them wider)
F9
instruction
offensivemuch shorter passing, play out of defence, work the ball into the box, be more disciplined, wide
counter, counterpress, take short kicks
higher, higher loe, more urgent, prevent short gk distribution, use the offside trap
in the future i will try WM, meanwhile let me know what you think about this
and srry for my bad english
This is interesting.
The formation I have developed is also very similar to this however, I use a Registar, a CM on Attack and a Mezzala on Attack duty with 2 Wingers.
I might need to spice things up...

I'm soo disillusioned at the moment as I cant to get any kind of consistency. Playing as Barca and try to apply certain principles to my Barca save. After a really positive 1-0 defeat of Napoli at Home, we lose 0-3 away at Real Sociedad. To be honest, one goal was a counter from our own corner and another was a set-piece; but I'm not confident going into games. Without watching the match, can anyone see any glaring issues here? My BBM has 'Get Further Forward' to try and add some penetration (which I think is an issue).
Edit: I've also just noticed I attempted just under 60 crosses, even though I tell the Wing-backs and WIngers to cross less.
First of all - most FMers have been there (disillusioned, frustrated) but it's part of the learning curve.
Now to your tactics - I see the issues. Before you read the below, watch these 2 videos:
and this video
The weaknesses in your formation is not so glaring but they are there.
1. Midfield:
Problem >>> Your players are playing in the right positions but the midfield is not as it should be. They are too deep and too narrow. 2 of them are basically play-makers which is not a bad thing however their attributes does not suggest they will get forward to score or neither create chances in the sweet-spot of the midfield which is in front of the oppositions 18-yard box. The Half-back will drop too deep without contributing to the attack (it is not a bad role but bad for what I believe you are trying to achieve). The DLP on support will not get forward but will stay closer to the Half-back which means you will control the game from deep with no immediate threat to exploit spaces behind oppositions defense and will largely rely on long range passes to compensate for reaching the attackers which means there will be more times giving the ball away than finding an accurate pass. The BBM - again not a bad role but with DLP and HB sitting too deep, he is the only one trying to make forward runs from deep (does Vidal have the legs to get up and down the pitch???). All these combined with lower tempo, shorter passing and Play-out-of-defense makes for a weak attacking threat. Your football will not be penetrating enough.
Solution >> Leave the Half-back as is. Make Rakitic an Advanced Playmaker (he will get more forward with still fulfilling some defensive responsibilities). Make Vidal a Mezzala on Support (and find another player who is more attacking and creative to play that role - you can even try Coutinho there). The Mezzala will support the striker and Right Side Attacker
2. Defense
Problem: all is fine with the exception that the 2 full backs are doing the same thing. Try to Mix and match.
Solution: Change Roberto to IWB/FullBack on Defense or Support - he will cover for the CMR. Don't use 2 wing backs at the same time for what you are trying to achieve.
3. Attack
Problem: too narrow and too disconnected from the midfield.
Solution: swtich Messi to a Winger on Attack - trust me on this. Been there and done it and you will see a change. This is mainly because he is a lefty and will still cut inside but at a more dangerous angle.
Make Suarez a DLF on support or a False Nine
4. Team Instructions: there are a lot of them which makes your attack slow and vulnerable to counter attacks. Remove Be More Expressive, Low Crosses, Shorter Passing for initial action and watch the game closely. Also, when playing away from home play on a balanced mentality.
some of the ideas are out of the box but give it a try!!!
PS: this was done in a hurry however give this a try and share feedback.

The TIs are quite straight forward in my description. HYG with some of my tactical screenshots. Please note that these are standard and I do make loads of changes depending on in-match situation so replicating the same thing might not work for you but pls do give it a try:

Good work @Trimisiyu.
Do you switch between mentalities? Or is there one you use more than others?
I mostly rely on Balanced because of several reasons:
1. I use Aston Villa - and with all due respect they are not a Barcelona thus I tend to be a bit more cautious. However, if you have players or use a team who are in the Tier one status (such as the likes of Barcelona, Madrid, Bayern etc) you can approach on a Positive mentality because a team will naturally seat back against you. If you watch La Liga matches in real life - I would suggest you watch Real Betis of 2017/2018 season. I find them very similar to my style of play. They are a possession-based cautious team. (PS: I do watch a lot of football esp lower team and pick things up from there).
2. I play in the premier league which is way more competitive in terms of finishing in top 4 thus I don't usually go all guns blazing.
3. I am also a very defensive FM player (although my tactics don't reflect it).
4. Most important, your team mentality has to work in tandem with player roles and duty as well. Largely, when I sometimes play on positive or attacking - I use only or 2 attacking duties. Also, the use of overlaps and underlaps are for controlling fullbacks and wingers mentalities.
In summary, in order for you to decide which mentality to use - you have "feel" the game. Understand your squad's strengths and weaknesses. I have to say, it took me a long time to come up with my own FM style (and everyone has their desired style of play in them) so you can also do that.
My advise - never be dogmatic about FM tactics but do a lot of research.

I am not sure why this thread became stale as it is an interesting one considering the challenges of creating some close to reality on a virtual space. Nevertheless, I was intrigued by the challenge which I took upon to accept. I went ahead to develop some variation of tactics I believe came close to Pep’s style however I am still lacking a lot largely due to the type of players I have in my squad.
I think it is possible to create something close to a Pep style nevertheless. However, I still have major drawbacks as I have not refined the attacking phase of the tactics however the defense is fine. Possession stats are also great along with the number of passes. per game (more than 600). The players I have in my squad however lack some abolties which is still a drwback for me such as work rate, agression and teamwork which is needed to win back possesion.
Thanks to @herne79 , @Cleon @Rashidi - I went through most of their works to come up with this tactic.
The first point I’d like to point out is the use of half-spaces by the no. 8 (KdB) and no.10 (D. Silva) in Pep’s tactics is very difficult to create in FM especially if you lack players with similar characteristics to these Mancity players. The issue is that FM19 ME has it’s drawbacks (which is natural in any simulation game) as if you use in a midfield diamond 2 roles such as CM or even AP, DLPs - the players always seem to come too close to each other but I believe in order to solve this issue, you have to use a double Mezzala or players that naturally move into channels and stay wider in the midfield. Thus I opted for a double Mezzala which is key to creating this tactic.
The second point is the use of fullbacks - this came easy as the movements of IWB on FM19 have been well refined to combine with players all around them. Thus sometimes you see an IWB on the outside and wingers on the inside and vice versa depending on the phase of play. I have opted to use a combination of these 2 roles on the far spaces most of the time as they give most flexibility and unpredictability to opponents (the AI). However, you have to the full back roles tailored to your players. Thus if you player is an attacking full back - have no fear and let him overlap into spaces and if the fullback is a defensive minded one, make him more conservative. Simple as that. Player to your player's strengths.
Team Instructions:
Playout of defense, dribble less, overlap left (depending on the game situation), lower tempo
In Transition: Distribute to center backs, counter-press and counter. I use counter depending on the game situation.
Out of possesion: much higher d-line, much higher line of engagement, prevent shor GK distribution
- SK - Support - No PI
- RB - IWB - No PI
- CBR - CD - No PI
- CBL - CD - No PI
- LB - WB Support or Full Back support or IWB on Support - this depends on how aggressive you want to be in the attacking phase of the game or on the counter. PI used >> Cross from byline.
- DM - Registar/Defensive Midfielder on Support. Again this largely depends on the type of player you have in the squad. If you have a creative DM, you can assign him to create from deep which gives you control especially in the attacking phase when opponents seat deep and you can as well use a DM on support with the PIs of Take fewer Risks, shot less. Again all depends on the game situation. I often opt for a Registar because i have a very good DM with nice passing, decision, anticipation and vision.
CMR - Mezzala Attack - i mostly always use an attacking mezzala here because I combine this role with my AMR who is always a winger because of the type of players I have. My AMR is a very fast winger that has good crossing and pace. The AMR stays wider and the Mezzala stays close to him as well and in-turn exploits the half spaces on the right side of the midfield and also runs in the channel in from of him. This is like what D. Silva does for Mancity on the left. My left midfielder doesn’t have a good off-the-ball thus i opted to use this role on my right. PI >> shotless, close down more.
CML - Mezzala Support - again this role is similar to the CMR but less aggressive because i want him to combine with my register and my LB. PI >> shotless, close down more
AMR - Winger Support - already explained. PI >> close down more
AML - Inside Forward Attack (if DL is FB or WB) or Winger on Attack (if LB is IWB) PI >> close down more, stay wider (if it is an Inside forward on Attack or if the LB is an IWB)
Striker - any role on support will do but it depends on the player you have and the opponent you are facing. This role is one that gives me so much headache as i have 2 types of strikers. One similar to an Aguero (creativity and nice finishing with nice teamwork) and another like a Lewandoski (attacking spaces rather than dropping deep to combine with teammates because he does not have a good teamwork). PI >> close down more defensive shape.
in summary, I am still fine tunning the tactic but i think i have come a long way with an average team.

I didn't know how much on impact they had until last night tbh, playing against a 442 so I tried making my full back Jack Stacey set too FB(D) so we have the numerical advantage if they try to counter attack with us, but he kept bombing up the wing no matter what, until i noticed his traits. Had to set the LB to defend which kind of ruined our Overlap with the LW but it is what it is.
Regardless, with a relatively LLM save (Luton Town in League One) I've used some of the guidlines established by Herne in this thread as well as other bits of reading and came up with this, front five all set to press more urgently and, CBs set to pass shorter and as is the keeper. The player's arent fantastic, but some others seem to have an idea that lower league teams can only play 4-4-2 Hoofball when that's simply false. I got Nuneaton promoted from the VNL to the Premier League in 10 years on FM 16 playing a possession orientated system as opposed to 'brexit football'.
The 2-1 loss to Charlton was particularly frustrating considering we mostly dominated, their first goal coming off the error regarding PPMs I've previously mentioned, with their second coming from an 86th minute set piece. One thing we seem to be struggling with is fashioning chances, although on the new public beta so lets see if the changes made to striker movement have any impact on that, if not it's something to look at.
Hi @bluestillidie00 - on another topic please. I see you using a different font on the football manager game. Can you please let me know how this can be done? I would also like to change my fonts. Appreciate your response

Totally agree with the "in combination of/with" philosophy. Just to have a glimpse of what @herne79 is referring to, see below SS to how I combined my roles below to defeat Mancity in CL Semi-finals. One thing I do is that I never use similar tactic (roles, duty, and mentality always changes) every match however I use the same formation. In the below game Vs Mancity, I wanted to exploit their wings as they left it unguarded and I literally scored almost all goals via the right wing. The trick is getting the ball to the Winger and Mezzala.

I can't loan players in my second season (2021/2022) as the manager of Monaco in French Ligue 1

I manage Monaco in my save on FM21; in my first season I was able to loan players however from my second season I saw the below and my squad has no loanee at the moment. It mentions something about loan rules which I am sure I have not gone against.
Can someone please have a look and if you need more details, kindly let me know.
I have attached my screenshot with the message along with screenshot of my transfer history.
