I've been utilising a 3-1-6 in attack a lot recently on FM22 and have it working brilliantly - with 2 different initial setups.  Not able to post at the moment but will do ASAP.

Im having issues with my players crowding and passing around the box and cant score. They will launch a long ball counter and i concede. Lol.

Wondering if its my players who arent intelligent enough to play this system.

Oh, and my LB or RB almost certainly get low ratings. 6.3 and below, i dont see them do anything stupid but their rating drop like nobody business.

Joint 3rd best defence in the league, I find that even though the IWBs have roam from position hardcoded, they tend to stay around that CM pocket, and on the counter then quickly track dashing wingers. I think it's important to have someone very physically dominant and a capable passer here, but so far not been an issue apart from one 7-3 result against Brighton, but included an Own Goal and two from central areas between the CB with the WBs in position. I think having collective support duties helps, something I learnt from Ozil, as generally I've not seen any issue with the IWBs on defence, but also because we're very possession dominant.

How many passes do you achieve averagely?

Im trying to do a Ten Hag system.

    I have two sets

This is what I initially started with

    Manchester United_ Opposition Instructions.png

But this is what I am currently using

    Manchester United_ Opposition Instructions-2.png

Coupled with my defensive instructions the aim, is to pressure playing out the back across the back line to either turn it over, or force a long kick. I've gone with the second one to increase how often I pick off the hurried kick.

Along with the quick tempo, it means I score a lot of goals against disorganised defences

Do you have to set it every game? I cant find the option to "auto" set them every game though.

Sell up front, buy in installments. I brought in Bennacer and Bissouma first season, along with Pavard and Musiala (no idea why Bayern allowed a deal tbh)

Won the treble first season , though seriously rode my luck at times.

On course for a league and champions cup double. Liverpool knocked me out of the Fa Cup :(.

Results are very good, still unbeaten and 7 points ahead of a rampant Liverpool, who are a nightmare to play against. Reinvented the back line after the first season (goodbye Maguire) and I've conceded 9(?) goals in 30 games in the league. I'll screen some stats this evening

Yea, Liverpool is a pita to play against.

Bennacer is a good and value buy at probably 20m.

Mbappe hasn't got wider as he sits in-between Davies and Bellingham (who has gone back to a box to box role), but pretty much. Davies has a couple of tweaks that make him a cross between a full back and wing back, the RCB is just a central defender. Bellingham sometimes makes it a 3-1-6 which is fun to watch

How is your results and stats? I suppose you are in 2nd or 3rd season with Man Utd? The starting squad is so ******, im having a hard time with Man Utd. Lol.

Here's how I setup, there are some PIs involved as well. I have my right fullback playing as a 3rd centre back, who only advances occasionally up the pitch if the winger is already highly advanced and committed and there is free space. Must not have gets forward at all times/hugs touchline PPMs, and give them sits narrower. If you really want to limit them, you can teach them stays back at all times PPM but my RB sits back enough to frequently create a 3-2-5 shape

    3 - CBs + RB

    2 - Central mids

    5 - everyone else

    Im assuming

    Timber sit narrower

    Lindelof stay wider

    Mbappe stay wider, roam

    Sancho stay wider, roam

    Bruno roam

    Haaland roam

I also decided to fire it up with Arsenal in the end. Sold Auba, lacazette etc… and I’m also really struggling for results. Create very little as well. Now I’m not expecting identical results and numbers to OP but I’d expect the tactic to perform similarly or come close to emulating OPs. It’s quite the opposite, getting pumped at home to teams I should be beating and struggling to create anything away from home. Can’t help but think I’m missing something, tactic is the same and the players are the same, and I’ve used the same PIs that have been listed :/

I believe @Ö-zil to the Arsenal!set the system up before the winter patch.

Fair enough, I can't say I've seen that much of Ajax beyond that Champions League run in 2019(?) I've seen talk of having your full backs tuck in and form a back three dependant upon the side the ball is before. Like I've said before the match engine while uncapable of perfectly replicating modern football is more than good enough for 99.9% of what people want to do. Completely honestly if they made options like being able to do things dependant upon the side of the pitch the ball is, they'd end up alienating so much of the fan base due to how overly complicated and intimidating the tactic creator would have to be. I'd class myself in that group too.

Back on topic though, I do like how you can make any striking role work within the system as long as you take into account what that role will do and make any changes to a tactic in order to keep the balance.

Yea, I believe I have deviate from the topic already.

People tend to over-complicate things for the game like myself back then. Now, I try to identify the style that I want my team to play and choose roles/duties which make sense. Its all about balance.

After identify the style, we got to cherry pick the players to fit the style. Just like I can't make Haller to play as a CF which doesnt play to his strength.

Don't worry about hijacking the thread pal, I'm always happy to have a constructive discussion. To be fair looking at what you've put down there is pretty similar to how I line up against the bigger teams, just a few changes in roles and positioning of the wide players. From what I know about Seb Haller though from his time in the Prem and looking at his stats on FM I'd be more inclined to play him as either a Target Forward on either attack or support or even Pressing Forward on Support as opposed to the complete forward. I very rarely use that role because I don't personally believe there are that many players capable of playing it. I see it as essentially a free role up front.

Yea, if you are looking at Haller, he would most probably fit as a TF. Ajax would then need to win the 2nd ball which is usually the case coz of their pressing after pumping up to him(they do that sometimes).

But for the system to truly work, I believe a CF would suits more as you had mentioned, its a free role. Ajax system is so fluid and easy on the eye.

Due to the limitations of the engine, we cant truly replicate Ten Hag's system on FM. For example, when Blind is out wide, Mazraori will tuck in as IWB. It happens on the opposite as well, Mazraori out wide, Blind will tuck in. It might work to a certain extend.

@skyline72 Cheers mate, I was doing a bit of reading up on Bayern Munich in attack and I seem to be accidentally replicating the shape Nagelsmann actually tries to attack in albeit mirrored. Can't say I've seen enough of ten Haag to say whether or not its anything similar to that

Yea, there isnt much info on Ten Hag system available. But the concept of the backline is about the same.

Whats on my mind is something like this:

    CF(s)

    IW(a) AM(s) W(a)

    BBM DLP/CM(d)

    FB/WB(s) BPD(d) BPD(d) IWB(s)

    SK(d)

    Sorry for hijacking your thread.
