Take a player like Mario Balotelli, for example. He is so gifted, and could be a world beater, but he never really got out his potential. Why? Well, I'd say he just didn't work enough for it, at least it looks like that from the outside. So how do FM replicate this? Though the hidden attributes in the game, things like professionalism, pressure, consistency to mention some. Players with low professionalism is something to avoid like the plague, at least I do. Low pressure will make them struggle in key moments. Low consistency will mean they rarely play as well as their attributes suggest they should.

Some of this can be mentored to improve, but if it's extremely low initially, then it's not likely to ever be very high.

Other than those, it could also simply be a very bad attribute distribution. If you have a striker with excellent positioning, for example, it looks nice, but it's not much use (except for pressing forwards perhaps) being a defensive attribute. So while it's not a drawback in itself, it can make a player appear to be much better than they really are.

This is something you should look for when buying players, take not of what role you are expecting them to play and make sure those key attributes are as high as possible. Other attributes are nice, but 3 unimportant ones should not trump a really important one.

That's the thing I am exceedingly careful that the player matches exactly the role and mentality I want. Despite meeting that criteria they are still mediocre. In scout reports I always look for "consistent player", and I want mentality and determination always fairly professional/determined or better. Maybe it is the pressure or isn't there an ambition attribute too?

    Agree with this explanation.

Btw, on the initial post and as you mentioned Sandro Tonali: here are his stats in my current FM22 AC Milan save, I've played 4 seasons. He topped 7.40 in league games in 3 of those 4 years.

Interesting. Tonali in 2 saves on FM21 and 2 saves so far on FM 22 never performs. This is my current save. I was convinced since I've seen it so many times in my saves that it could be true for all saves but guess not. Wonder what's different for me or if it's just happenstance and that's it.

  2. I've noticed a trend with certain players who on paper should be lighting up their league, but never manage to consistently perform better than average.

I notice it holds true for certain players across different saves and even different versions of FM. So it must be somehow baked into their attributes/profile.

Sandro Tonali, Bruno Guimaraes, and other players of that level do not perform better than a 7.10 average. This is true in FM 22 and FM 21. It's true whether I get them or an AI team does. It's true across many seasons. League doesn't make much difference.

My question is what prevents these seemingly world class players from performing? A combination of hidden attributes? Any way to remedy it? No amount of hectoring, coddling, hands off approach, or anything else seems to work. They also never seem to be awful, never cost me a game, but are always frustratingly mediocre no matter what I do.

It's perfectly realistic just would like to get an idea of why?

  3. The search feature when selecting target clubs to offer a player to is awful to use. At least give us the ability to sort the results by country. It returns hundreds of results that are nowhere near your actual search.

I mean look at this. Typing in "AC Milan" or just "Milan" yields too many results to go through and AC Milan is nowhere near the top if it's even in there.

I had to look up how the name reads in the game and use "A.C. Milan" despite the search result reading only Milan! It's been this way for years, seems a simple fix?

  4. What's the longest one of your players has wanted to leave for a specific club? After a rejected contract or bid for him or whatever set him off.

My favorite player has gone a year like this. Now the interested club only has minor interest, but he has 1 yr left on his contract. I imagine they'll keep the interest until they can sign him on a pre contract?

Anyone ever salvage a situation like this? I guess the other team would have to sign an alternative. Any chance their interest could go away even though his contract's almost up?

I've actually always liked this mechanic for the realism, but frustrating since when I try to do the same, the player only stays unhappy for a few months.

Got a really bad glitch with promises just now. A bid came in for my backup LB right after the Jan transfer window closed on Feb 1st. The player wants the move but was happy with my response "I can't let you go until the end of the season, but I can see you're desperate to leave so if there's still interest then, I'll let you go"

So I rejected the bid thinking I had until the summer, the next day he's now "unhappy promise not kept to sell him"

Now I'm faced with making him unhappy since there's no way around this broken promise that I can see. In the 2nd conversation that he's already mad that I didn't keep my promise there is the option to say I need you until end of season. Which he replies that's not good enough....despite already agreeing to it!

Must be a glitch, and a semi game breaking one, very frustrating!

FWIW I never actually see the promise to sell him in my promises screen. It only shows up as failed once I reject the bid. When I actually promise him to sell him in the summer I never get a promise.

Need to track this definitively, but seems like I'm being shown the same players in scout reports all the time. Once scouting is complete I don't need to keep seeeing the player show up

I can confirm, I get multiple emails that a scout report is finished for the same player. I assume the player is being continuously scouted and we get a fresh report each time? If so can we can turn off all but the first "report done" notifications? If it isn't a new report each time then why is the inbox being clogged with repeat emails.

That's an interesting point, mate. I always think that Teamwork & Work Rate matter more... is exactly why I couldn't get rid of Pepe quick enough.

To be fair I'm going into my 5th season with Pepe and I wouldn't trade him for anything. Club legend already, scores massive goals, and has scored at least ten Messi type worldies.

For me his low determination his well worth his goals, Nelson just doesn't have the end product to justify him lowering others determination.

Hi @lomekian when did you sell Willian & how much did you get? He's been ok for me so far but little injuries are frustrating - Nelson has been very good for me - he's playing as I loaned Pepe to Man United.

Nelson is good but I'm wondering about selling him. His low determination along with a lot of other players we inherited - Pepe, Gabriel, Saliba, Willock all have fairly low determination. A few of my great youngsters determination is plummeting and I have to think it's that group that's doing it.

  10. Just had to vent here, had my most brutal run of results ever. In my first 2 seasons with AFC we won the PL my first season and a Carabao Cup. Decent enough, but in first 2 seasons I also lost an FA cup final, Europa final, and a CL final.

In 3rd season I had won Carabao cup, and was poised to do the quadruple. Going into last game of PL I'm in 1st place on goal difference. Away to West Ham and we are awful, can barely create a chance, nil nil draw. Chelsea win their game and win the PL. Then I proceed to lose the FA Cup final and CL final both to Chelsea. The FA Cup we lost 1-0 on a penalty, the CL final we lost 2-1 in injury time of extra time. Heartbreaking stuff. I think I need a month break at least.

  11. This is ridiculous. Last year it was scheduling the Euro Super Cup during the first int'l break of the year when no one's available. Somehow the other team had their entire first team squad available.

FM21 now I'm unable to field 2 of my most important players who happen to be U21s. Shameful stuff really, it's a simple scheduling issue!

  12. First time I'm seeing this after about 12 board takeovers in my time playing the game. It was a consortium takeover and they instantly bid for 2 players who aren't any better than what I have.  Makes no sense whatsoever. I can see a new board coming in and having targets, but this is absurd. It's not something that happens. Especially when you're a long serving and successful manager, they'd consult with you at least. It's going to completely ruin the chemistry of my team and force me to sell favorite players.

  13. I've noticed a few glitchy press questions that don't match what's happening. I just lost a CL quarter final and was furious, then the press asked me "how does it feel to not qualify for the CL", despite being 1st by a long way in the league. Was already angry after the loss and this one didn't help. I don't remember these from previous versions. Except the "so and so team has done the quintuple!" nonsense

Are you talking about youth team or U23?

In U23, your players are nominated as available to play, but i assume if the U23 manager is in charge of teams selection for that side, then he can play whoever he wants. Also, i think in most U23/reserve sides, they might have a limit on how many players over 23 they can play per game. Is there match fitness good enough to run out a whole game?

I guess in real life, most players good enough to play in the first team, would be walk ins for the U23's as well

Right, U23 team. Fair enough if the U23 manager gets final say in his team, but I'm not sure that's how it is IRL. In any top league if a player is returning from injury they'd get priority in any game the first team manager wanted. I could see somewhere like Spain where reserve teams are a bit more autonomous, but even there the main team has full rights to any player there.

  15. I think it's been this way for a long time, but why do the youth team managers not listen to your requests of playing first teamers for match fitness? Sometimes they do, most of the time they don't.

I don't know how it works IRL, but wouldn't a U23 manager have to listen to the first team manager's request to play someone? Or is it at their discretion?

Dies this still happen if you play in full screen?  Is your graphics card driver up to date?

Finally tried it in full screen and yes, starts up perfectly fine. Should I post a bug report about the windowed loading? Seems like it might be my hardware

I'm not sure what the 'actual sale value' would be though. How do you arrive at that figure?

The 'sale value' is what another club is prepared to pay for him.

I know what he means. You can have a 21 yr old wonderkid still only "valued" at 30 mill or whatever it might be. In reality any team with him on the books will be looking for 80 million plus. It's impossible in FM to convey that to the player. It's either agree to sell him for a fraction of his actual worth, or risk upsetting him and ALSO selling him for much less.
