  1. Given that there are only 19 teams in Italy's Serie C/C due to Trapani dropping out a couple of matches into the season, if I just move a club from one of the lower semi-professional leagues will they take the 20th spot in the division and everything else work OK?

I assume all I'd need to do would be edit the new team to make them professional and edit the division under competitions to Serie C ? Or is there something else I'd need to update?

Check if unintentionally you are selecting all the items when changing the colors.  Or clear all the items and add one by one.

I think I've cracked it - I don't think the individual items were set up so they defaulted to the colours set in the Details panel. I've set them up now and it has worked!!

Thanks very much for your advice, I was going round in circles assuming everything was already in place.

  3. Really simple, stupid question:

I'm trying to edit a team's kit. Currently they are red shirt, red shorts, red socks. I want to make them red shirt (i.e. leave as is), black shorts, white socks. However, when I change the shorts or socks colour, it changes the shirt too, so I've ended up with black/black/black and white/white/white rather than the combination I am aiming for.

I know I'm missing something really simple but can't find what it is. Must have tried half a dozen times without success after thinking this would be a two-minute job.

    Any pointers greatly appreciated.

All Leagues, because if you only remove teams from the active leagues it is possible Sicilian teams are promoted into your active leagues.

The advantage that Italy has that you can easily filter on local region. So go to Clubs, filter on Nation Italy and Division Level 1 AND Local Region is Sicily. Note any team that turns up with teamname and division. Repeat for division level 2 and 3 (I think three already has multiple divisons?) From a certain levels the divisions go regional so you will see any Sicilian teams in Sicilian divisions only, in this case you only need to note the division name and not the separate teams.

After that, remove the competition from the highest Sicilian team and pick a (non-Sicilian) team from a level to promote up. This way you are removing the Sicilian teams from the Italian competition.

This can take a while btw, Italy is big (in the database).

So it's best to start from the top, because I will need to move Trapani out of Serie B, and so promote a team from Serie C into B, and then remove Catania and Sicula Leonzio from Serie C, so now I need three teams from Serie D and so on?

Ok, if you want Sicily as a country next to Italy work is going to be a bit harder.

Your starting point would be to recreate the Italian leagues without Sicilian teams. You can keep the Sicilian data in Italy for the moment.

Make sure that the Italian competition works well before you do anything else. It will save you loads of headache.

How do I remove the Sicilian teams? Do I only need to do it for the active leagues (Serie A-C) or would I need to remove them all from the lower divisions too?

  6. You're welcome @krakonico, I'm grateful for your advice. Apologies if I seem to be repeating questions, I'm trying to (a) get things clear in my head and (b) make sure all the information is in one place.

    So my next questions are:

How do I identify the extinct European nations? Is there a field I can filter on?

How do I go about clearing the European competition teams for the international tournaments?

@Wolf_pd, thanks, my plan is to have Sicily completely separate from Italy.

Also, what's the best way to create multiple save points as I edit the database? I think I'll work on 20.3 unless either of you think one of the other databases is somehow a better idea.

  7. Just to be clear, my experience with the editor is limited to clearing all the injurues in the database, and in the very distant past adding myself into the game (who hasn't done that at some point, right?) - other than that, absolutely nothing, so any advice you give, please pitch at idiot level.

My crazy plan is to make Sicily a separate league and cup competition. I mentioned this in the 'Simple questions...' thread and got some good advice from @krakonico and now I have my plan.

The goal is to create the below:

    Lega Sicilia A-D

    • 4 divisions of 16 teams
    • Goal difference as separator, standard home and away ties, no fancy league split or anything similar
    • Sunday afternoon matches as standard
    • Top two promoted automatically, third and fourth play-off against each other
    • Bottom three go down
    • In the top division, the winner goes into the CL group stages, second place into the qualifiers, third and fourth into the Europa League

    Coppa Sicilia

    • 64 teams
    • Random draw
    • 90 minutes then straight into penalties
    • Winner goes into Europa League group stage

    Questions

    • Is there anything else I need to plan for?
    • In what order should I go about doing all this?
    • If setting this up requires me making Sicily into a separate country, how do the international tournaments work?
    • Are the towns for Sicily automatically assigned to the new country, i.e. will newgens be Sicilian or Italian? What happens to uncapped existing players?
    • I'm opting for relatively large promotion/relegation zones because I basically want lots of movement to hopefully spread the prize money around and create a competitive league - is this the best way? What I don't want is a situation where Palermo and the other big Sicilian sides monopolise the top half and competitions
    • How do I insert my teams into European competitions without overloading the competitions? i.e. I don't want to end up with 66 teams qualified for a 64 team group stage.
    • How do I manage the coefficients for European qualifications?
    • My intention was for Lega A & B to be professional, C&D to be semi-professional. However, there are only three professional Sicilian sides in the FM20 database (Trapani, Catania and Sicula Leonzio) - would I need to manually change the other 29 clubs into professional sides? What impact could this have on their finances (I don't want to give them professional financial commitments on a semi-professional income)?
    • How do I manage promotion/relegation from generic 'lower divisions' into Lega Sicilia D?

Should be, but that's depends on how you want your competition.

    Like:

    • How many teams do you want in the entire new nation?
    • Apart for the national cup, are you going to create regional, league, divisional cups?
    • As you will normally will place them in Europe, you will need to resurrect a inactive nation, and move one active nation to another continent (the better is Kazakhstan to Asia).
    • Set up the language to the nations.
    • Will you add cities?
    • Will you add stadiums?
    • For each league, how many teams, and how will you declare the champion, as a normal league, with a playoff, with a split?
    • For players and staff, will you transfer actual players, create them from scratch or leave the game to create them when you start your save?

Once you have an answer to those and maybe more questions, then is time to start editing.  The example given here is with Basic Rules, mostly all of them apply with Advance rules, but the latter has many more options and is an entire different universe (and I'm not prepared yet to enter it:

    So:

    • Step 1: Make the plan, make the structure in a paper, visualize your league structure.
    • Step 2: Gather all the info that you can, clubs, if you are going to make new clubs, the name of those clubs, will be they fictional or based on actual clubs.
    • Step 3: Edit:
      • Step 3.0 Save always: for everything you do, save.  You can also save several versions of your edit, so if you got a problem, that you bypass something important and that ruined your file, you can upload a previous version, instead of start from the beginning (that happened to me )
      • Step 3.1 Database edit: In this step you will need to create the nation (edit one of the extinct one), competitions, the cities, the stadiums (or move those already in the database), clubs (same as stadiums), weather (if you want more immersion), players, officials and staff, move one European nation to Asia (or any other competition, but that would break the game).  Remember when creating the leagues you need to set the position in the pyramid, the editor will explain in that field.
      • Step 3.2 Rules creation: Here is the real work, you must set the day all leagues will reset and the start of a new season (don't get confuse with the league season dates) As your desire is an european nation, the best month is in June (any day).
        • Then you are going to set the transfer (well you can do that later) dates, and the nations transfer rules.
        • Then you will activate the leagues one by one, setting which one is the main league, and which ones are the other leagues, how many teams will promote and demote.  The first league don't have promotions, the last league don't have demotions.
        • After that in each league then you will set the starting date (after the nation season date), give more or less two months for the preseason, and the end of the league season (before the next year season date), and give at least one month, for any inconvenience and play offs.
        • Same with cups, but here you will need to set up each round.  (test every option).
      • Step 3.3: Test your rules, the first one is the verification, if everything is fine the editor will give you free pass.
      • Step 3.4: Test the database, there is a option in the editor that will simulate several years (as you wish) of your file, it will give you any error before running it in the game.
      • Step 3.5: If everything is fine, then is time to test it in the game.  Don't get attached to any player in the test, because maybe you need to go back to the editor and start all over (if that player is a regen in your 10th season).  In the test on the game you need to check all behaviors of your file, like: Are teams getting in the champions, europa, and then the third european cup?, are the nation in the euro qualifiers, euro nation leagues and euro cup?  Are the promotion/relegation doing as I wish? Are the teams buying or selling as I would like? and any more questions that you can imaging.  If you are not satisfied with the results then is time to go back to the editor.

Any more questions, there are plenty people here that could help you any time,

Thanks very much - that's exactly the sort of thing I was looking for as a framwork. I had a rough plan in mind but I clearly need to do a lot of research to create this.

When I do start editing, would it make more sense to start a thread on here or just carry on in this thread? (I assume the former?)

  9. I have a small list:

    • The ability to control player tutoring (just a drop-down, like for PPMs, rather than the conversation needed in FM)
    • The ability to start a game with fake players
    • 75% zoom! This was great on FMC15, but disappeared in FM16. I'm still using a laptop with 1366x768 resolution and it makes everything a little chunky on 85% zoom
    • The ability to retire squad numbers - if this still exists, please point it out because I've completely missed it! (I know this is very niche)
    • A few more staff roles - I miss being able to build a backroom team
    • No more interaction! It's fine as it is

    Thanks!

I've read on a couple of threads that when designing a tactic it's important to envisage how goals will be scored.. how true is this?

It's worth doing as it gives you some kind of idea of the movement you want to see in your tactic. That way, when watching the highlights you'll be able to identify whether the players are doing what you want or not.

  11. Never do anything just for the sake of it. You can use no instructions at all.

I think the biggest mistake I've made with the new tactics system is feeling like I have to pick an option from each area. Then my tactic ends up with about a dozen shouts on top of the settings which are built into the tactic by default. It's a miracle my teams didn't implode sooner!

  12. This may have already of been asked but..

How do I stop my players crossing so much? Both my Inside Forwards & Complete Wing Backs have cross less set yet still attempt a large amount of crosses that just result in corners.

If it helps, I'm using a balanced / counter set up,

I may be barking up completely the wrong tree here, but have you asked them to do something else instead? E.g. play more through balls? Or fewer risky passes (might get them to pass rather than cross if they are focussed on retaining possession...?)

Also, is your team set up to exploit the middle? If not, maybe they are crossing frequently because you are still trying to exploit the flanks.

I should add a caveat that my success on FM14 (or noticeable lack of it!) means that anything I suggest should be treated with a healthy dose of scepticism.

  13. 1 - Roam from position won't help as that's something that happens when you are attacking. You need to close down more, push d-line up to reduce space.

2 - Width only comes into play when you are attacking. When in defensive phases of play player naturally go narrower but remember the type of formation you use will determine how narrow they go. If you use a narrow formation like a 4-1-2-1-2 (narrow diamond) then they'll be narrower than a flat 451 for example.

3 - Just position changes, TI's and buying new players

4 - It's all zonal unless you choose specific man marking in the PI's

5 - Not sure but the wrong forum anyway :)

Thanks Cleon - just to clarify though, would asking my players to Stick to Position contradict the Hassle More instruction?

    5 - Transfer Centre -> Transfer Targets

Thanks very much! I assume the message you get at the start of your tenure is just a hangover from the older versions as I can now ask for suggestions from more staff members than just my Assistant Manager...?

  14. A few (hopefully) quick questions:

    1. If I want my team to press more, do I need to use Very Fluid, Roam from Positions and maybe a higher defensive line to allow the players the freedom to leave their position to pressure the ball while also reducing the distance they need to run to close down the opponent? (Obviously in addition to the Hassle Opponents TI.)

    2. How do I get my team to play narrower in defence and yet wider in attack? Could this be done by setting the TI to 'Play Narrower' and giving my wide players 'Hug Touchline' PIs?

    3. Do the roles affect the familiarity of the tactic, or is it just shape and TIs?

    4. How do I know what sort of marking my team is employing? Up to FM13, I could choose either Zonal or Man marking, but now all I get is the option to Use Tighter Marking - does this translate to Man Marking?

    5. Not really related to tactics, but one that keeps coming up - how do I ask my Assistant Manager for loan suggestions? I knew how to do it on the old versions, but since FM13 and FM14 came out, I've lost the button. Help!
