They don't have any top tier players imo. As in, guys on the level of Mbappé, Kane, Bernardo Silva etc. Rodri is but he's not a difference maker and ideally you need someone of that level at the top.
But they've got a style of play that's so nailed down and embedded that they can call up players several tiers below and still do well. Greater than the sum of the parts.

Germany v Spain
Portugal v Holland
Belgium v France
England v Switzerland

Not going to post the whole thing but they were my QFs onwards

Surprised he didn't get called but he is pretty average so it's not a big loss

He still makes their squad and I think he'll end up in their 26 again. I don't know if he makes their XI over Antonio Silva but I think it's safe to say he'll make an appearance at some point

Wait you mean to tell me Deschamps didn't pick Mateta or Olise?

Van Dijk, De Ligt, van de Ven, Aké is a quality collection of central defenders. Holland quietly starting to produce some good players again. They just need some top forwards and someone to help De Jong out

Zirkzee's injured. Went off vs. Napoli. He had the look of someone who knew he wasn't going to make the Euros squad.

It's definitely a minimum of 3. To stop countries sacrificing a goalkeeper for the extra outfield player and then getting into deep **** when a GK gets injured

Messi’s second of the game, 108 minutes in, restored Argentina’s advantage with Cristian Romero provocatively roaring his celebration in Mbappe’s face. As it transpired, and while there were no protests at the time, that goal should technically not have stood as two of the South Americans’ substitutes were encroaching on the pitch on the far side as Jules Kounde desperately tried to hack the forward’s attempt from the goal line. The subs had spilled on in anticipation of Lautaro Martinez’s initial shot finding the back of the net, only for Lloris to palm it out for Messi to convert.
L’Equipe would quote law three, paragraph nine of the Laws of the Game in their morning edition, stating that if, “after a goal is scored, the referee realises, before play restarts, an extra person — a player, substitute, substituted player — was on the field of play when the goal was scored then the referee must disallow the goal”. Yet no one alerted referee Marciniak and he remained blissfully unaware of the encroachment.
This is the sort of thing Yuko or gunman post and then tell us the referee was biased against their team Incredible that it's coming from a huge publication like L'Equipe

It's utter nonsense like that post on England and Portugal that mean people tire of gunman. Not a 'spicy' take; a completely inaccurate take.

Bono; Hakimi, Stones, Gvardiol, Mazraoui; Griezmann, Amrabat, Enzo Fernandez; Messi, Giroud, Mbappé
Would be mine. Don't think Saka was good enough in that many games to be team of the tournament. Not when you've got three or four forwards who were much better for longer.

Agree that goalkeepers are a big factor. They don't really have any pressure on them either which helps loads. Doesn't ever get talked about in shootout buildups - you'd think TV pundits or the production teams would have save ratios ready because there's goalkeepers out there who are at either extreme and who are impacting shootouts (positively or negatively). I feel like I rarely see this info or hear this discussion.

Not sure I'd have them that high either tbh

Ian Wright is giving big Kingpin vibes on ITV in that suit

When will Messi show up for his country?
Only won it because of the referees iirc

Wait, is Zidane as France manager confirmed?
No, but there's so much speculation that it's a bit of a 'no smoke without fire' situation. Almost expected that he's going to be confirmed at some point in the next week or so.

Bono best goalkeeper.
No issue with Enzo Fernandez best young player. He was their best midfielder and played great.
Best player should be Messi.

Mbappé already has a World Cup win. Not going to harm his standing not winning another.

Emiliano Martínez's antics are really annoying

A miss is like a break of serve. Got to score the next one

Messi and Mbappé first takers. No messing around

I'm not. I had us finishing 3rd and Spain winning the group.
But it's not like Spain are full of incredible players. Good players, one great player, a few others pushing that bracket, but nothing that makes them a certainty to top the group. They only just scraped through a World Cup group that was probably no easier than this one, with a group of players that I don't think were any better
In fact going through the posted predictions in here, only Rob and CFuller have Italy winning the group. So actually most people have Italy finishing somewhere else
