The cry of FM managers down the ages . The "lagging reputation" problem is hard to deal with - hopefully another good season will stand you in good stead. Good start, keep it up!

Nottingham Forest, September 2023 Transfer window now closed and, as expected, little business was done. The only senior players to leave were LB Nikolas Ioannou, who departed for his native Greece on a pre-arranged end-of-contract deal; CM Cafu, who left on a free after declining a new contract, and CB Jonathan Panzo, who joined Strasbourg for £1.5m. Coming the other way, our first priority was to replace Ioannou at LB and I found a promising young prospect from Portugal: A fee of £1m was enough to sign him from Vitoria Sport Club, and he's competing for the starting spot with ex-Hull youngster Brandon Fleming, who joined us in January. To replace Cafu I found Elias Hagen, a young Norwegian who was prepared to join us on a season-long loan from PSG: With AM Joe Lolley having declared that he would consider his options at the end of last season, his replacement was a Slovenian u21 international Tamar Svetlin, who was signed for a bargain £1.1m. In the event, Lolley suffered an injury at the end of the season that kept him out for most of the window and, therefore, remains at the club. Finally, we needed a striker to replace Eddie Salcedo, whose loan we couldn't renew because of work permit issues. Despite a long and tedious search for a good prospect, I couldn't find a likely candidate and finally resorted to the loan market again, bringing in Man City youngster LIam Delap. All of these new recruits are taking a little time to settle and gel, but that's to be expected and I have no complaints so far. In fact, we've begun our season in storming form: Here's hoping we can keep it up!

@robterrace Oddly enough, my scouts just flagged Gulliksen but he's way out of my range. He signed for Juve in summer 2022 and a year later he's valued at £21m-plus.

Last game of the season is often a tricky fixture, but a safe mid-table result is a pretty good achievement, I think I'm just about done with pre-season in our return to the Championship and we're looking good - just beat Spurs 3-0! I'm desperate for a striker to support Pereira (Eddie Salcedo was refused a work permit on renewing his loan), and unexpectedly lost Jonathan Panzo to a late transfer bid so he'll need to be replaced. But, for now at least, I'm pretty confident we'll be in good shape for the season kick-off.

Nottingham Forest, May 2023 With the season over it's fair to say we strolled to the title. Given that we managed to hold on to most of our Championship squad, we were comfortably the best team in L1: A winning margin of 29pts tells the story - we lost just two league games all season, including - disappointingly - our final game against Ipswich at home Everyone in the squad performed at a high level throughout the season - only young CB Loic Mbe Soh rated less than 7 in average ratings for the year. Notable performances: Others worthy of mention include James Garner who scored a season average rating of 7.55 from the DM position; striker Eddie Salcedo, who racked up 20 goals from 24(12) appearances; and GK Bryce Samba, who played 57 games in all competitions and produced 30 clean sheets. Team stats were no less impressive... we were simply the best: Looking ahead to our return to the Championship, the board want a top half finish (which might be a little ambitious). I haven't been given budgets yet, but I ran a pretty tight ship this year and ended the season with more than £6m in the transfer budget and £120k in spare wages - even without an increase in either we'd be in good shape as the squad doesn't need much in the way of reinforcements. The big issue will be the loss of Garner - Manchester United want more than £350k a month, and £25k a week in wages, to renew his loan again and that seems hard to justify, despite his stellar performances.

New laptop day The usual delivery nonsense - your package will be delivered between 8.30am and 8.30pm - before it eventually arrived at 7pm, followed by the exciting/tedious process of installing Windows and driver updates, deleting the bloatware, installing Steam and other essentials. The plan was to extract the data drive from the old laptop and install it in an external drive cage, but the new laptop had space for it internally and that installation was eventually concluded successfully (a lot of very tiny screws notwithstanding ). Finally installed FM22, fired up the game and everything was in place - old saves, graphics files, tactics, the lot. Turns out I have 3 more games to play in Forest's L1 campaign, so I'm just about to find out what difference the new hardware makes. I have a slightly faster CPU, and much better GPU. Here we go... Edit to add: Happy overall with the new hardware - processing slightly quicker, graphics a little better but at the expense of louder fan noise; some of the graphics settings (both in game and in Windows) need a bit of tweaking.

Congratulations and commiserations where appropriate. I'm following on my phone but typing any meaningful comment is a pain. I bought what I thought was a compatible fan but it didn't work so went to order the direct replacement from China... out of stock . So as much as it pains me, I've ordered a new laptop, which should be here on Wednesday . Not sure I'll be able to get the Forest save off the old machine but I'll be happy to get back in the game... missing it more than I thought I would. in the meantime keep up the good work

@Dong21 It's looking that way. I played one match last night to see how it went and it was pretty bad - sounded terrible and the heat build-up was scary!

Well, my worst fears have been realised - it's the GPU cooling fan, and it looks as though the bearing has gone. The trouble is that every single model of laptop on the market appears to use a slightly different design of fan. I've found a supplier, but they're in China and it will take the best part of two months to get it shipped here (on current estimates). On the other hand, I'll be damned if I'll write off an £800 laptop for the sake of a £15 fan

Looking pretty good . Should make for a really enjoyable save with some long-term potential. Some good transfer business there - I particularly like the signings of Jake Young and Harry Lewis. I was hoping to conclude the season with Forest but ran into IT problems this morning with the laptop making discouraging noises on power-up. It's either a failing hard drive,, or a failing cooling fan. Oddly, I hope it's the former - although a replacement HD would be more expensive, at least they're readily available. Replacement fans for laptops seem to be in the hens-teeth department

Well, it didn't take long...

Nottingham Forest, March 2023 It has been a while since my last update (real life getting in the way of FM ) but I've been steadily plugging away, which means there's a lot to catch up on. I intended to update after the January window but somehow ploughed through another month. Even a cursory glance at our form shows that we're really too good for L1. Just a single league defeat in a hectic schedule - fair play to Accrington, they took their chances and we didn't - and that was one of the very few games of the season where we failed to find the net. Otherwise, we're banging in the goals: strikers Pereira and Salcedo have been ever reliable, but Alex Mighten and Jacob Brown from the wide AM spots, and Braian Ojeda from central midfield have been regular scorers, as has AML Joe Lolley, despite his advancing years. We couldn't find a goal against Liverpool in R4 of the Carabao, but did take the PL giants to penalties so we exited the competition with our pride intact. I mentioned before that I expected a difficult winter transfer window. We had a number of players who were unhappy with our relegation and, although not actively pushing for transfers, were never going to turn down a move if offers arrived. So it was of little surprise that we lost no fewer than 6 players in January, including some of our best defenders. First out on New Year's Day was backup GK Ethan Horvath, whose move had been finalised some months earlier. The departures of the ageing Harry Arter, to Leyton Orient for peanuts, and third-choice GK Jordan Smith to Sunderland were of little concern, but then came two big blows. CBs Toby Figueredo and Scott McKenna had been ever-present in our outstanding defence alongside Joe Worrall but both were on expiring contracts and would not discuss new deals. Rather than lose them for nothing I opted to accept the best bids, with Toby Fig joining Brentford for £1m, and McKenna heading to Getafe for £4m. An additional defensive headache was a long-term injury to on-loan LB Jake Vokins and I opted to terminate his loan rather than continue to pay him to occupy a treatment table. In exchange we brought in three replacements. To cover Arter's departure in central midfield I spotted Shandon Baptiste on the transfer list at Brentford, and £1.2m secured his services. To replace the left-footed McKenna in central defence I repurposed Jonathan Panzo who I had been playing at LB, and then brought in young Brandon Fleming from Hull, who I believed could do a job for us. £275k seemed like a bargain. For more depth at CB I then went back to Hull for Sean McLoughlin - a model professional who is also able to cover LB - for a mere £72k. We were undoubtedly weaker as a result. I didn't think we were fatally weakened, but the proof would be in our on-field performances... Early results were questionable... despite a good number of wins and no defeats we certainly allowed a few more goals than usual. But a FA Cup win against Championship QPR suggested we still had what it takes, as did PJT wins against Man City and Chelsea u23s. Yes, there were doubts after we opened our February schedule with a severe defeat to West Brom in the FA Cup, but the rest of the month could hardly have been better: In our league schedule we racked up 4 wins from 4, scored 15 and conceded just the once. It can be no surprise that we are running away with the league: Pereira has 30 goals from 31 starts and 2 sub appearances, ably supported by Salcedo who has 16 from 19(9). Lolley is our creative force with 20 assists, but also 10 goals of his own. But it's also fair to say it has been squad performances that have driven us on - every single first-team player has an average rating above 7.1 for the season. And while we're on course to score more than 100 goals this season, we also have the best defensive record (and the best disciplinary record, too!) With 10 games to go we have a 24pt lead (albeit Wimbledon have a game in hand) and a couple more wins should see us have the title wrapped up nice and early. We can then start to plan for our return to the Championship. I'm expecting a battle to hang on to our star players.

Oooh, international man of mystery Based on your clues and a quick browse through the L2 squads I can't find a club that perfectly fits the bill (are you sure no transfers were made?) although there are a few that are close. Looking forward to the big reveal "soon" And I'm now a big fan of late takeovers via leagues with different seasons, avoiding the needing for tedious holidaying.

Not quite that many hours, but I've never had one either. A couple of takeovers that cleared some debt, but no tycoons, no sugar-daddies

I don't think you're alone - I have a Feedly page with around 30 FM blogs and where I used to get 5 or 6 updates a week, this year I haven't had that many per month. Forums here are quieter than I can remember, too. I suspect many people simply have too much life to catch up with after 2 years of Covid (and possibly a bit of burnout after 2 years of fairly relentless FM ). Limping laptops don't help either, as @Sysiphus has found. As for me, I'm still enjoying it although I'm having to rise above the EFL schedules that are more like 20 years hard labour than 3 months of football simulation. Just coming up to Christmas in the Forest save and can see the next crisis coming - having held on (without much drama) to wantaway players up to now, it has become clear that a bunch of them are on expiring contracts and won't discuss a renewal. So it'll be a big selloff in January, or lose a lot of value on frees in June . Hope you find a bit of fun in the final act at Valencia
