  1. First a disclaimer.  I am no good at the techie side of computers.

What I don't understand is why SI have to render my iMac virtually useless from one iteration to another.  Graphics ran fine on FM22, but now I have a 1* rating.   Now I know the answer will be 'it's your computer, but on the face of it the graphics for FM23 look the same to me - so why the difference, surely it is in SI's interest to maximise the number of potential users there are?

  2. I'm looking for advice on a 'Scandinavian' save.   I want a big club in Norway, Denmark or Sweden that has a decent current squad that I can grow to make some sort of impact in Europe.  I will only be buying players from those three countries, so a decent youth development scheme would be useful as well as good facilities and budget.

i think with their "fm squad" youll be able to do quite well straight away anyway

I agree that the 'FM Squad' is better than the real one.... but it is also a bloated squad that is going to have problems with squad registration as well as giving everyone enough game time.   So my compromise was to let four players go, but bring no one in.   Apart from anything else it gives you a chance to evaluate properly the players you have got.   Even with four leaving I am getting trouble from some players about their game time.   In the January window it will be 'one in - one out'.

  4. Hi

I'm doing well up to early December, only dropping two points away at Aston Villa.   4 points clear at the top, but the fixture list has been kind with all my matches against the other members of the so-called 'Big Six' at home.

I created some room in my bloated squad by selling Cedric, Socrates, Ozil and Mustafi but didn't bring anyone in in the summer transfer window.   The only area where I have concerns about quality cover (I intend to try and bring on the Arsenal youngsters) is in midfield.

I try and keep injuries low by regular rotation, playing with an 'A' team in the league and a 'B" team in the cups.   An easy Europa League draw (Slovan Liberec, Rangers, RedStar Belgrade) helped with this.  The only area I am struggling with is midfield where I only have five real options for my three midfield slots.   To cut a long story short, I decided in the summer to bid for Lucas Leiva as a short term solution whilst waiting for Guendouzi and Torreira to return next season.   He was transfer listed for £3.8m and I did a deal to bring him in on a two year contract on £73k per week.   Then just before transfer deadline day I got cold feet (caused by the real life experience of bringing in elderly Brazilians on monstrous wages) and cancelled the deal.

I'm now thinking of reviving the deal (he has been available on loan, which would be even better) but wondered whether anyone had any experience of him in your teams?   His technicals are good, his mental exceptional, and his physicals dodgy -he is 33.   I am hoping excellent anticipation, positioning etc will compensate for lack of speed.   I would use him in the DM position as a Defensive Midfielder on Support in a 4-1-2-2-1 (or 4-3-3 as some have it).

  5. Climax of Forest Green Rovers Season.....

The last six games of the season were mostly to be against teams towards the bottom of the table.   No problems there then?

An away win against Crawley saw young striker Tahvon Campbell end an eight match goal drought.   He then added a further two in a comfortable 2-0 defeat of Macclesfield which took us to the brink of promotion.   A 1-1 draw at Tranmere saw us guaranteed promotion but we lost Mathew Worthington to a season-ending injury.

With the pressure off we secured  top spot with a commanding 3-0 home win over Cambridge in front of a disappointing crowd of only 3490.   Good to see Ferrand Rawson, one of our players of the season, get a rare goal.   Next off we won 2-0 at Crewe ending their hopes of automatic promotion, and finally, in front of a packed The New Lawn we saw the season off with a 2-0 win over Exeter.

We ended up with 88 points from the 46 games thirteen points ahead of Colchester with Mansfield a further point back also guaranteed promotion.   Notts County, Swindon, Oldham and Port Vale will contest the dreaded playoffs.   Tranmere and Macclesfield were relegated.

The Board have been in touch again about renewing my contract.   I was disappointed with attendances at The New Lawn, especially when we were going for the title, but the main problem is the Board again refused to improve the training facilities.   They expect me to get a top half finish next year with a transfer budget of £12.5k!

I have been a bit surprised that with all the teams in the division that changed manager (some more than once) no-one sounded me out, and I must confess I am close to handing the keys in on my company Nissan Leaf and walking away.   Will have one more chat with the Board to see if they will show any ambition at all.

  6. March at Forest Green, such hard work.....

After the disaster that was February came the struggle that was March.

A scruffy home win (1-0) over Lincoln was followed by advice from my Assistant Manager to drop Danny Rose.   My Board also suggested that the problem was my lack of tactical flexibility - i.e. using a tactic all season that had brought Forest Green unprecedented success.   So I decided to try a change of tactic to bring an improvement in fortunes and bring the best out of Rose.   Given my meagre attacking resources I decided to move from my trusty 4-1-4-1 (as FM calls it) or 4-1-2-2-1 as I know it, to a narrow diamond 4-1-2-1-2 to see if a two striker approach would work for the team and for Rose.

First up we outplayed Morecombe away but had to settle for a draw.   Second game with the new formation saw us win 3-2 away at third placed Colchester with two goals for Reuben Reid.  Promising.

Next up a home draw with Carlisle and Reid (my second striker) breaks an ankle and is out for the rest of the season, and George Williams (my only viable AM) injured and out for two weeks.   So much for a change of tactics.

Revert to original tactics for even draws at second place Port Vale and at home to MK Dons.

At one stage had five out injured.   Most of the season has been fairly good for injuries, but then I don't have intense training or high pressing and regularly rotate so that it is very rare to have someone playing when less than 95% fit.   These injuries just came when I didn't need them.   Can't understand what has happened to the team as Team Cohesion is Very Good, Dressing Room atmosphere remains Excellent as is support from the players for me.   Squad body language is 'motivated' or 'fired up".   We remain top with 72 points from 40 games, four points ahead of second place Port Vale, eight points ahead of fourth placed Crewe and ten points ahead of eight place Swindon, so still in contention.

Danny Rose has now hurt his shoulder in training and is out for three weeks.   Following Reid's injury this ought to be a disaster but with 3 goals and 1 assist in 15 games and the lowest Average Rating in the whole squad I am not sure.   I am currently consulting my lawyers with a view to suing the advisors who recommended him to me for gross incompetence, mischief or worse.

My Chairman has been in touch again about a new contract.   Given that my objective is to build the club as much as the team I asked that they improve the training facilities (as we are only getting 60% capacity at the moment, and worse when the 63 bus isn't running, I decided not to ask for ground improvements), but he said no.   Contract talks stopped at that point.

  7. January Manager of the Month inevitably leads to the wheels coming off.....

Three of our four games are against sides that have already beaten us this year.  Swindon away we are deservedly leading until the 88th minute when they get a penalty and another goal in 90th minute from a 30 yard screamer.. No time to respond.   Notts County at home, outplaying them throughout but lose 3-2, then lose by odd goal at home to Yeovil and away to Mansfield when again they both get penalties.   Not sure what to do about this as I am not playing aggressive football.   Only light moment of the month was the news that Ashley Cole had joined Exeter!

Lead now down to 4 points over Port Vale and my nemesis Swindon (managed by Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink).
