I don't know when tactical "roles" were introduced to the series, but I think it's time for them to go.

Ball playing defender, mezzala, carrilero, pressing forward... It's nonsense. It's fluff.

When Quique Setién selects his Barca squad. He looks at Messi and knows what he'll get. A small guy with dribbling, technique, vision, finishing.. Do you think Setién says to Messi

    a) I want you to play as a false nine today

    or

    b) Go upfront, try to drop a little deeper and pull the defenders out, make yourself visible and link up with the wide attackers

We don't need roles. We need favoured position, player traits, we need attributes and we need player instructions. But these labels for sets of pre-defined instructions and under-the-hood behaviour should go.

Most players will do their thing and play their style, together with trying to carry out the manager's instructions. Traits and attributes.

I'm divided on the "duty". E.g. instead of duty "attack" we could set individual instructions "get further forward" and "take more risks". I don't think we need duty either..

Role- and duty free FM21! Who's with me?

Because in the end, it's still a videogame and needs to work within a defined framework. Player Roles are here to stay.

You could try the very old fms though.

I am really struggling with the transfer market, current year in my save is 2025 (currently managing Celtic)

Example of this is Ryan Gravenberch. In a season and a half he has played 62 games / 13 goals / 34 assists and has an avg rating of 7.74. I bought him for £25.5m yet after those stats he is only worth £19.5m. I am inundated with offers of between £19m - £23m so obviously won't sell him for that but he is becoming unsettled as despite negotiating no one will go above £25m.

To pre-empt this I am trying to find a replacement as its inevitable I will have to sell, yet the AI players worth £4m that I have found, their clubs want £86m - £110m......none of those become unsettled and for me its totally unrealistic.

Another example, I bid for a 16 year old from St Mirren worth £15k and they will not budge from £19m. Again just seems unrealisitic. St Mirren aren't going to refuse £5m for a player worth £15k.

Just wondered how people dealt with this and if anyone had any tips on how they approach ridiculous counter offers to try and get a deal accepted??

What i know is that player value is based on reputation mostly. Play him a lot in CL and Europa league games (and hope he plays well) + National team appearances also help.

  3. A quick question and i hope i get a quick response.

So i started a save when fm20 was free to play for a few weeks in March/April. I enjoyed it so much i did 2 full seasons and stopped playing in the 3rd season.  Now i have bought the full game and want to add a few extra leagues because the free play only had 3 leagues available ( i think). So now, i want to know if when i add 4 new leagues, will the game populate with a large number of regens like it did in older games ? or will it not.

Because if it gets populated with regens i sadly might just have to start a new game. Hoping for a quick response. Thank you.

I just hire loads of scouts and get each scout to search one of the top leagues each every season. I'm currently having a lot of joy with the Brazilian and Argentinian leagues. I've signed quite a few 17 and 18 year olds, not all of them are described as wonderkids, but they all have the key stats for the positions I'm looking for and have the potential to develop into world class players.

It's always confused me how certain players are described as wonderkids, but other players with better stats at the same age aren't described as wonderkids?

i think the Wonderkid description is for a young player, playing well and playing REGULARLY.

A better player, playing much less, might not get the tag

So The first season was good, won the league but it was tight if I rmeember right, also won the carabao cup and Europa League. I have now just finished the second season and things got way better. The league was over with 6 games to go.

I am annoyeed though as I was hoping to get over plus 100 GD and failed by 2 :( But set new records for wins, goals scored and points in a season so happy with that.

In the cups, we failed to retain the carabao cup but won everything else:

There were goals form all over th epitch so that is pleasing, although I am getting annoyed with all the wide men, full backs included, driibling and shooting too much so going to try and fix that over the next season I htink, as long as it doesn't impact results.

I'm determined to go unbeaten next season, almost did it this season, only losing 2 games in all competitions and drawing just 4, the rest we won, most pretty easily.

This is my current squad at the end of season 2

At the moment I have Jude Bellingham coming in, in the summer to add to and already amazing midfield. Not quite sure how I am going to keep every one happy, but I have so far so will see how it goes

What role do you play Bruno and Rashford in ?

Only part of my tactic I'm struggling with, is from corners, I'm defo not maximising them -  anyone having any luck or got a decent set up to try?

corners is easy. Put two tallest players at near and far post. that's it.

Maguire, Tuanzebe, Smalling, Mctominay. lots of options.

Tuanzebe and LIndelof have had hattricks in a match just from set pieces.

Anyone else using many of the United youth players?

I only ask as I’ve just started my second season and I’ve got James Garner as my 2nd DLP begins Pogba and I’ve just noticed that he’s now classed as a wonder kid along with Williams and Greenwood.

i was just wondering if this is a regular thing with him or if he has a random PA

Sent Chong out on loan and he progressed well. Same with Garner. Play Williams regularly. (he got twice as many games as Shaw ) Mejbri and Gomes have about 10 appearances between them and are progressing well.

I might test it, guessing you go with one being a mez and other AP-S/A?

My 1st formation is a 433 with 2 cms being AP and thats maddison and pogba, adding a BBM seems less effective going forward and as its a conservative/balanced formation its right (my logic) to have 2 attacking players that can press/have good tackling/stamina for closing down etc.

I do double Mezzallas actually. works a treat. Lots of goals and assists from both guys. Being a deep formation you need to play on positive or attacking to really see attacking results.

I see the mezalla to be slightly more aggressive Aps, who move forward, and hold on to the ball less.

Pogba was subbed on and changed the game, long balls to rashford all over down the left when they both came on. Certainly not against a newcastle side either, as for the transfers I would've sold fred (find him useless and just keeps the ball ticking) had I not bought sancho too. Pogba is worldclass so he's not a problem.

I just feel like the formation is just not working in FM at all, the 2 cm's dont do alot regardless of the role, BBM role to me seems off from what it should do too.

that team shouldn't have lost considering i've won every game and we dominated until those 2 set peices- maybe a 1 off but im sure i've felt it more times in my other save too which shouldn't happen that often.

i do agree with you about the formation. I play 2 cms and a dm and have found a lot of success with that.  Pogba and Bruno Cm with Scott behind.

Thought i'd give a go at FM again, 1st game in and i've lost my sh*t, rage quit so hard.

Had them on strings the whole game, 20 mins in lindelof and suso get nervous all be in at 7.1 rating. After half time dominating... until 2 set peices. made subs, game changer with like 12 highlights in 2 mins game time full attacking, we score offside, we score again. Dwight fking gayle peels off Shaw does 3 defenders and scores bottom right with DDG making the error to the goal by missing an easy save.

This took me 5 minutes to write this with so much anger and fustration :seagull:

To be fair, Pogba and Fred in this game aren't defensively solid enough for a long term central midfield - that is, simply, for a CM 2, you need about 28+ in positioning and marking for both of them.

    Hi,

I have had decent results using the preset 4-1-4-1 Gegenpress coming through the leagues. I got the Reading job and got them promoted to the prem where I finished 8th in my first season. I have strengthened my team somewhat this year and sit around mind table but I am really finding it hard to score many goals. Something I have struggled with a lot is how to break down those teams who are parking the bus. I can get around 30 odd shots at goal with around 11 on target but either draw or lose. The issue now is I find all I am doing is constantly adjusting TI's and player roles etc and I am lost on what I need to be improving.

Below are some pics of my setup:

can you try posting the attributes of your attacking players

  12. Technique - Accuracy modifier. For passing, crossing, corners, penalties and finishing. If two players have the same attributes for everything except different Technique stats, the one with the higher technique stat will be generally more accurate.

Aggression - Aggression is like bravery, but for tackling and winning the ball back. Higher aggression = higher likelihood of tackling player with the ball. Great for ballwinning players and tactics.

  13. What do attributes mean in game context in simple terms, really ?

Bravery - A high bravery player will get to the ball in a crowd of people (opposing players). When ball is in flight, brave players are more likely to get to the ball in a crowd. Great for defenders defender aerial balls in crowded areas (in addition to defending attributes like Jumping reach and anticipation). Great for target men and strikers who have to get to the ball in crowded spaces.

I had a tactic that i used and after a while my strikers weren't getting shots, Took a closer look and whenever the ball was played my striker was surrounded by two defenders. Solution was to either tweak the tactic or play a striker with higher bravery, did the latter and goals started coming again despite the same conditions.

Balance - basically an anti-tackle stat. a player with good balance is hard to take the ball of off. If a player has good dribbling, place and balance, let him run with the ball/dribble because he will have a lot of success in that area. low balance = easy to dispossess.

Decisions - a choice modifier stat. A player with high decisions will mostly make the best choices (esp in passing the ball) when they have multiple options. Great for playmakers. If there are three passes available, a high decision player will often make the best one, all other attributes considered.  Not often spoken about but great for set piece takers too. IF you have players with similar attributes for set pieces, let the player with the highest decision stat take them.

  14. I play Football Manager is phases, have done so for the past 15 years. I play and get into it for a few months, find a working tactic, understand my squad and have the success i want, and then stop playing for a few months and come back to it feeling almost completely lost and far behind the knowledge of my previous managerial in-game self. When this happens i am able to somehow claw back the knowledge from scouring this specific forum for hours, but sometimes i need just a quick, concise reminder to get me back on track.

Disclaimer : I will most certainly get some of these wrong and want this to become more of a collaborative effort with people joining in and giving their battle worn advice.

So, what are these attributes, (and attribute clusters) and what do they simply mean in terms of gameplay. Really.

So you got a striker who seems better than the one you previously had but still can't seem to score the goals the previous one did so easily ? Same with a star midfielder, or defender. A tactic not working even though it seems good at face value ? There's a good chance there's an important attribute you are overlooking .
