    Hello fellow FM addicts,

one of my best players won't perform. He has everything for almost every position in defense but I it won't work. His best matches has been as an No 8 like a BWM but those two places are reserved for more creative players. We play a 433 with two FB(S) and two W(S) center is like DM(S) AP(S) MEZ(S), tactical style is fluid counter-attack. We have 11 machines on the pitch, all hard working, determined and brave creatures.

Any ideas to get his engines running?

He is missing Team Work and hight for the DM(S), hight and jumping for a CB, Acceleration for a WB but for a FB(S) or a BMW(S) he's good enough (?) I like my midfield trio to have Team Work.

looks like a pretty good fullback tbf.

Teamwork is important for any role that needs to pass a lot, of which the deeper midfield and defensive midfield roles are one.

    Hey @larssssoni,

Hope you're having a good day!

I think we'd need a little more information on what you're trying to do and about things that has happened till now. Here are the things you can share for us to help you better.

    1. Attributes of the players you have designated to be your primary scorer and creator for the team.
    3. Attributes of your front 3 players
    2. Attributes of your CDs
    3. xG Table from Data hub
    4. Crossing scatter graph from your team performance section in data hub

Preliminary diagnosis suggest you're having issues with giving away too many goals against smaller teams like OHL, STVV and Union. Which can be explained by a higher defensive line and too many players concentrating on attacking. Although you have a balanced team mentality but the general individual mentality is high and they'd make more forward runs because of it. As a result, if you lose the ball, you're very vulnerable on the counter. You have only 3 players dedicated to hold their positions out of those 2, the DM might move up sometimes if you have sustained the position for some time. Leaving only 2 players to account for against at least 2-3 of their attackers. This results in the opposition having free shots on target that is evident from data hub.

Another reason could be due to your over eagerness on pressing without a decent shape or idea of winning the ball but that's a little nuanced to be understood.

I'd recommend sharing more details for us to help you better. But it definitely seems to be an issue on you being too attacking without being defensively solid enough. This caused you to loose a few games which reduces the team's morale in general and now you need to grind a few wins to get the momentum back. But let's wait for you to share more info on this.

100% this, also add the Season preview page.

    Tactics should be built on

    1. The ability of your players to play those roles. (relative to the league you are playing in )

    2. The synergy between those roles and the tactical style you choose.

    3. Your reputation/season expectation in the league.

I'd prefer a forward role that let Hojlund use his mobility a bit more. The high tempo press should be fine, just top up that morale and things will start ticking over. An AF will do both for him, although I'm not crazy about them when combining with w/wide forwards in an 4-3-3. You could play him as he does IRL, as a spearheading poacher.

    • It's rare to find an athletic profile who can play as a solo goalscoring 9 in a 4-3-3 (height/pace + the mentals to back it up) so when you, having him finish your moves can work quite well. You then want the wide players to be more creative, 1v1 threats than goalscorers themselves.

Other than that, loading in a face pack/team badges will improve your experience a lot :)

Hojlund's been holding up the ball a lot for his teammates since coming to Manchester United so wouldn't really class him as playing poacher for them fwiw.

Thanks for the tip! How do I encourage deep crosses from my WBs as you suggested? Is it by hitting earlier crosses?

Wanted to add that the Pressing forward suits shorter passing /buildup play and the Target forward suits more direct play.

The CF is also a good option for Big target forwards but it mostly suits a big, physical but creative forward.

Deep crosses -  play out defense, hit early crosses Team instruction

You can also check between your BBM and MeZ, which one of them has better attacking attributes and change them to an attacking duty to add an extra attacking dimension.

  5. From my (maybe limited) experience.

Target Forward -  Uses physicality. Good in air. Knocks down ball to teammates. Doesn't run with the ball.

Makes more attacking runs on attack duty.

Pressing forward (previously defensive forward) - Pins opposition back. Presses backline. Holds up ball. Can run with ball.

Have them move into channels if you want them to pack an extra scoring punch , but also know that they won't be in buildup as much and will need to be found with good passes.

The Pressing forward can "play a bit" ie, more intricate passing and short plays.

The target forward suits direct football.

Both players can play both roles so pick the one that suits your formation and tactical choice.

a tip : looking at your formation it might help you to create more opportunities for your dorwards from deep crosses ad you have two WBs in your side.

Don't want to burst your bubble, but you do realize that all the fan tweets are the same? Like 1 positive, 1 negative, 1 neutral. Always that same formula after each match

But totally the best thing about FM is that everyone can play it however they want.

I once found out a player i wanted had a reasonable release clause all from taking a cursory glance at the fan tweets so you never know what gems you can find there ! LOL

  7. I'm thinking of even doing a MUCH MORE IMMERSIVE slow save when i finally get FM24.

I'm talking one Game per week. Strategizing for the next game. Reading fan tweets. Hyperfocusing on youth development.

Watching the opponents last match (or two) on comprehensive to see how they play.

    a truly pedantic experience.

    The works. Lmao.

Best thing about FM is that you can play it however you want, and when you give it the chance it can be quite the fun football sim.

I play always on comprehensive but I feel I'm rushing it sometimes. So I'm thinking on going down to Full Match to learn more about my team, tacitcs and football in general. (Also because I want to change carreer IRL to Tactic Analyst, so I hace to start practicing somewhere 😅)

    That's the way.

I strongly believe if you have even a little understanding of how the match engine works tactically, playing on longer highlights makes you harder to beat and makes you regulrly overperform because you have more opportunities to see what's going wrong and make changes.

Actually play all matches on comprehensive, always. But then again, i’m also someone who may take the game a bit too seriously and treat it like the irl job i could never get 😅

Setting up every training week manually, doing my own opponent analysis where i watch highlights and analytical data of my opponent’s previously played games or games they’ve played against teams of similar statue lik my own.

Litterally micro managing about every facet the game has to offer.

Also the reason why it takes me around 90-100 hours to finish just one season… It’s the way I get the most immersion out of playing fm

    High five !

You play just like i do. LOL !

I just secured promotion with my Teneriffa side. I dominated most of the games using 4-2-3-1 formation, but using it against that narrow formation was a doom every time. I did win once stacking central midfield like they did, and it would probably work more often, but is there another way? Are there instruction you could make, without having to copy their strategy? It just looks impenectrable.

I have a bit of experience with the tactic you are facing and only know how to beat it because that's the tactic i used in a 5 season long almeria save in 23 and how other teams beat me showed me how this tactic can be beaten lol.

Monchu is a playmaker so you have to consider that mainly.

This tactic has 7 guys deep and three guys high.

You can stop attacks from this tactic by

Isolating the guys up top from receiving service ie stopping the playmaker among the dms + the wingbacks - as they will be their only options for ball progression in transition to attack.

so either - 1. stop the "progressors" (dm passers and WBs) from getting the ball to "attackers"

                        2. Stop attackers from receiving ball regularly from progressors .

The choice is dependent on what your team is good at or you are comfortable with doing.

    Secondly

One way of Attacking this formation effectively is using the space it gives you. They have 3 guys in your half and 7 in theirs. .

You can use deep progression and buildup to draw their defensive players out because they have a lot of ground to cover and open them up for effective attacks. Your deeper players will have a lot of time and space on the ball because they are giving it to you.

To put this all together, let's assume Monchu is their playmaker. Which he most likely is.

You can have Your AMC sit on him, and your wingers also sit on the Wbs. And then have your 6 guys at the back recycle and draw them out and playmake from deep.

    Hello,

I've been trying to implement a "pass and move, high pressing" tactic (following Guide to FM) and it has been working reasonably well, but there's a position/role that I think is underperfoming: AMC.

The only PI is on him: roam from position. I've also tried using take more risks. This player is one of the best on the team, but usually has a lower rating unless he has an assist or a goal. Using AP(s) could also be an option, but I didn't really want the magnet effect. I did want the "fluctuating" effect though.

Thoughts or recommendations? Feedback on the tactic as a whole is also welcome.

    Cheers.

    AP or Trequartista.

I like to have trequartista for any AMC role that has two players ahead of him. You could also put the mezzala on the right and put him on attack to create a sort of 2/2 or 3/1 attack involving the AM/Mez and PF/DLF depending on your needs and or preferences.

  12. I just wanted to pop in and see whether there were other managers who like to take a slow, steady approach to the game and play most of their matches on full match.

I tend to do that quite a bit and it makes the games longer but much more fun and immersive.

I know people that like to play on Key highlights and i think that's much too wild for me. Curious to find others who prefer to play this way.

I haven't really noticed any issues with my current set up.

With the much higher tempo my DLP doesn't tend to take long before the ball is moved on to someone else.

Could that also maybe be due to his attributes.

You two could post your DLPs and the leagues you play in for comparison.

my high agility, high balance DLPs seem to get dispossessed far less compared to his understudy with weaker attributes. Something to consider.

  14. easy. Let assistant manager manage a game and go back and watch highlights and match stats/analysis and see what he's doing right and learn from him.

Letting my assistant manage friendlies is how i figure out which players are good at set pieces.

i also watch u19/u21 games to see what players are good at before putting them in first team.

"Learning" from your ass man is a very effective strategy and there's nothing wrong with that.

  15. On a long journeyman save in FM23 i ended up at Almeria about 12 seasons in and had a lot of fun managing them for many seasons. Some years into the save i noticed Betis were always producing good players and were always so hard to beat for me. I go to check and they also have a 60k seater stadium !

Honestly made me regret picking Almeria over them lol. They seemed like they would be a better team to have picked.

Planning a Betis save if i ever do another LA Liga save.

  16. Thanks for the replies.

What i mean is, what tactical choices do you make on a macro basis based on how you want to play.

For eg. I watched a @rashidi video recently where he chose a 5-2-3 wingback formation for a team battling relegation instead of a 4-3-3 dm wide formation. Which i found very insightful because i always thought the 433dm was very defensive but it turns out it wasn't defensively solid enough for the task at hand.

So what i mean is, i expected answers to my posts in the line of

    - i play a 4-4-2 because my tear has great wide players and 2 fast strikers and i'm expected to play direct and finish midtable etc etc

  17. Been playing since cm 02/03 . Bought about all but 3 or 4 editions in between. Will be skipping FM23 mainly because i tried the demo and not enough has changed for me in particular to make the switch. Also having a lot of fun with my saves on 22.

Hopefully fm24 (or at least a later update/patch of 23 *fingers crossed* ) sorts out some of the main issues most players have and gives us new and exciting enough features to help us off the fence :)
