I am never concerned about individual players' (nominal) ratings or even performances, but rather making the tactic work as a whole (regardless of which players will have more or less of an impact). So I will focus on your tactical setup and tell you what tweaks I would consider based on my tactical approach and philosophy.

In terms of roles and duties, these are the tweaks I believe could help (assuming your players are good enough):

    PFat

    IWsu           AMat           Wat

    DLPsu   BBM

    FBat   CDde   BPDde  (I)WBde

    SKsu

Let me explain the reasoning behind:

    - switching the AM's duty to attack (instead of support) so as to encourage him to: 1) be more willing to attack the space created by the PF on attack pushing the opposition back-line and 2) create more space for the BBM as a midfield runner arriving from deep

    - switching the AMR's role from IW to winger in order to both add more width on that flank and allow the BBM more space to operate within

    - switching the right back's duty to defend (possibly with changing his role into IWB as an option), in order to mitigate potential defensive risks on that side (caused primarily by the lack of a holding or covering CM + the wide forward being on the attacking duty)

    - changing the left back into FB pn attack duty, basically for 2 reasons: 1) to create a natural overlap on the left flank pairing an attacking fullback with an inside-oriented wide forward (IW) and 2) because CWB as a role is far more suitable for narrow systems in which he is the only wide player on his flank (plus the top-heavy nature of your formation)

    - switching the DLP's duty to support to encourage a bit more progressive manner of passing on his part, while still having him as an essentially holding type of midfielder that is supposed to provide defensive cover for the attacking fullback

When it comes to your team instructions, I already suggested in my previous post that they should be toned down a bit for the sake of creating more space. More specifically, this means:

    - dropping the DL by a notch (to just higher instead of much higher) and LOE by 2 notches (to standard instead of much higher), which not just creates more space for your players in attack but also improves your vertical compactness in defense

    - definitely removing the get stuck in, because hard tackling is usually not a good idea when you play with a high defensive line, especially when coupled with a high-risk team mentality (which already makes the manner of defending proportionally more aggressive by default)

    - possibly even reducing the pressing urgency to default (basically for the same reason as with the get stuck in/hard tackling)

Following these (potential) tweaks, you can then consider applying a split block (with 4 players up front, the 4231 looks like an "ideal" formation for that).

NOTE: I don't know your team/players, so please take all my suggestions with a pinch of salt. Plus, a couple more tweaks may be needed as well (besides those already proposed). Experiment a bit, see what happens and report back

Right, so its still very early doors, I took all the suggestions on board, resulting in a 6-1 thumping of Burnley, followed up with a 2-1 away victory at Inter and a 3-1 away at Leeds. Giving Foden an attack duty has, so far, improved him dramatically, really pleased with that aspect so thanks. I have moved the ST to a Poacher, purely because I dont feel as though neither of them score enough so i'll see how that pans out moving forward. One thing I have noticed, most definitely in the 2 away games was how many more chances we are conceding, both needed Donnarumma to be on top form for us to not concede more than the 1. Maybe once the changes settle down the defence will too. So like I say its early doors but the signs are promising.

EDIT: One more thing i've noticed it we seem to not dominate the ball as much anymore and keep giving it away cheaply, as I said in the OP, we are usually really good at keeping the ball, if nothing else. Donnarumma finally had a bad game and we've just been trounced 3-1 by West Ham, out of the FA Cup for this season.

Is he struggling in ratins/goals/assists? Do you currently have any sort of PI's assigned to him?

You can always try to change the CM (s) to a CAR (s). That way one miedfielder will stay wider and protect your right flank which has a player with an attacking duty, and while staying wider will clear the middle so your AM (s) will have more room to operate in...

Struggles in all aspects, the odd game he has a decent impact but not nearly enough. Off the top of my head I have roam, moves into channels and get further forward

You are basically making a kind of tactical mistake that many people do as well - an overly/needlessly aggressive manner of defending, which not just makes you potentially too exposed defensively, but also reduces the space your players need when attacking. And assuming that most of the opposition are already looking to deny you as much space in their half as possible following your success in the past couple of seasons, reducing that space further through your own tactic is hardly likely to help.

On top of that, I think that a couple of tweaks to your setup of roles and duties would also be worth consideration, both in terms of overall tactical balance and how you create and use space when attacking.

If you would like to hear more specific suggestions on the above, please let me know

Any ideas you can throw my way i'm open to, the IW on the right is unreal for me, my top scorer this season, out on the left, usually Sancho its a different story, rarely makes any meaningful impact. If you have any ideas on how to get the best out of my 10 it would help, apart from Kulusevski on the right, the goals from everywhere else have dried up.

  4. So, I dropped the defensive line and the LOE, toned down the pressing and changed the BBM to a CM(S). Early doors but we played the next game and we had a lot more control, created a lot more and seemed to limited the opposition to few opportunities. I am thinking of replacing the 10 with a CDM because I feel the 10 is starting to have less imapct on games, but when I've tried it I feel my ST is too isolated, not sure what to do, catch 22.

  5. So, I'm in my 4th season with Newcastle, below has been my formation since the last 1/4 of season 1. It has served me relatively well, the defence is sturdy enough, although never world beating and in attack my then forward Morelos was hitting 20 a season with ease. The wing backs excelled which was a primary aim of me playing how I am, I like to keep the ball but move it quickly and with purpose, this was happening and i've topped the possession charts for 3 seasons. Fast forward we managed to win the League Cup and finished 4th and 3rd after a respectable 7th in season 1. Season 3 was the highlight, somehow beating PSG 2-1 in the CL final and I thought this season we could really push on and challenge a formidable Liverpool for the title. However it just hasn't worked that way, I haven't really changed anything, bar the usual tweaks I tend to make throughout a season. Now I am drawing a lot more and i'll tend to have on average 15 shots a game with only 2 or 3 on target, the fast, incisive football has become a bit more laboured and we look like we have no ideas on the pitch, its really frustrating and i'm at a loss as to how to turn things around, things aren't necessarily bad, just haven't gone as I was expecting with us falling further and further off the pace.

  6. I've been lurking and playing FM (slowly) all year. Finally got my Vale side promoted at the first time of asking. First year I really utilised the loan market, Kun Temenuzhkov, Curtis Jones and Tashan Oakley-Booth been the stand out performers all year. Temenuzkov finished the season on 28 goals and Oakley-Booth won the League 2 player of the year award.

On to the second season, Jones and Oakley Booth weren't available but Temenuzkov did rejoin and he's picked up where he left of with 2 in 2 this campaign. I've got rid of a lot and dead wood and taken a punt on a lot of young players released from Premier League clubs, hopefully it'll be enough to consolidate this season and perhaps i'll be able to sell one or two to fill the coffers, money is VERY tight for us, don't really have anything to make big improvements to the side. What money I did have I spent on Odin Bailey from Birmingham, the lad looks a talent and i'll be looking to build a side around him as we attempt to climb the leagues. Rumours of a takeover keep rearing their heads every couple of months though, so we will see what happens moving forward. We drew Stoke in the 1st round of the Carabao Cup, although we couldn't rise to the occasion, losing 3-1 on the night.

Now I'm here I guess I'll be a bit more active, great reading some of the success stories, loads of different clubs in this thread!

In terms of roles and duties, the attacking fullback would make more sense behind the IF, which creates a natural overlap and thus more varied interplay on that flank. The rest looks okay. Therefore, I would make only that small change and then the setup would look like this:

    PFat/PO

    Wat               TQ                 IFsu

    CMde     DLPsu

    WBsu     BPD     CD        FBat

    SKsu

Thanks for that, i'll try it out. 1 thing both tactics struggle with is players hitting the target, i'll have 13-16 shots a game but sometimes only 2 or 3 of those will be on target

  8. Hi guys, its been a while since I posted anywhere on this forum!

I've decided to take the reigns at Coventry. Decent squad overall but near on impossible to make any real improvements in the transfer window. Willis and Chaplin look like real gems and I did manage to squeeze in 2 loans, Matt Butcher from Bournemouth and Marcelo Djalo from Fulham. We currently lie 2nd after 18 games in the League, trailing Barnsley by a couple of points.

Hopefully we continue the good form and secure a return to the Championship

Marin as you probably already know has immense potential and yes Championship is a great grooming level for him. Are you managing to get the best out of Grealish too?

Haven't heard of Zurkowski, where is he from? You could probably get Xadas as well to Villa.

Polish side Gornik, looks decent mate. B2B. Yeah I did get Xadas, again I hope the Championship can bring out the best in him ready for next year. Grealish has been decent for me as behind the striker. Abraham btw, immense so far, hit 4 last game

Started my Villa save on Friday night. Tough job due to the unbalanced squad (no quality defenders) and zero transfer budget. Difficult to sell the deadwood as well.

Yep already had issues - Chester has left for Palace, could't really get no one of quality in. Managed to sign a Dutch fella Douglas on a free at CB, but hes just been injured for 7 weeks! Max Broughton from Bolton but hes 16 - looks a real prospect though and only cost me 500k
