    The Latics are flying!!!

Taking on from my last update, sitting down towards the bottom of the table and well, frankly a bit of a mess.

After a 1-0 away defeat to Walsall in which we didn't have a single shot on target and then Blackburn dismantled us 5-0 in the cup, I actually decided to play a bit more attacking in the hope that we can pen the opposition back and not just invite pressure.

All of our following games were against teams in/around us at the time, with plenty of them sitting in around 7-12th in the league so teams we absolutely had to take points off. Here is how its gone so far:

A quite brilliant run of results, picking up huge wins against the likes of Exeter and Newport. The run in is similar again, all teams that are beneath us or around us so if we can keep this going, maybe we can catch up Tranmere in that 7th place.

If we end top half or just outside the play offs I wont be over disappointed given where the club was, but an optimistic part of me things we look really in control of our games and could possibly win another 8 or 9 of our last 13 games. Who knows where that takes us!

I logged on here to start with a hugely positive post, then it all went a bit downhill, but nevertheless, here's how its going. We've been busy, very busy.

We followed up what was in hindsight a quite impressive 0-0 at Forest Green (who were 2nd in the league) with a great 3-2 home win against 4th placed Mansfield. Rodel Richards banging a superb Hat-trick there and other newcomer Rhys Williams producing a superb display in defence.

Coventry in the cup was now a free hit, frankly I've got bigger things to worry about but as it was a home game, I went full strength and decided the financial benefit if we won could be huge. An early second half goal from Dylan Dahamboula, who will leave the club in the summer on a free, gave us a brilliant win, shut up their frankly patronising manager Mark Robins and sent us into the 4th round where we will play Blackburn away. Not the dream draw, but even if we make 50k its money in the bank.

Bolton away in the Papa John's cup trophy was again a free hit and frankly we didn't show up at all, 1-0 at the break and it should have been 3 or 4, Richards got us level before they absolutely dominated us and eventually got a winner with 10 minutes of time remaining. A flying water bottle at the end of that game as our performance was abject at best.

On the transfer front, 2 more have come in, with Ed Francis coming in at CB and a young united player Galbraith on loan, who was recommended by my scout in the rather great new scouting addition that the game has.

Going the other way, a number of loans were cancelled to free up space in the squad and release some wage budget, plus Jombati and Ntambwe have left for Notts Co and Crewe respectively.

League wise, not a lot has changed, we are 19th, 13 points off the play off's but I suppose there is half a season still to be played. I'd really like a top half finish if we can just put a run of wins together.

Overall, we seem to have settled into a tactic of 5-2-3 and have a more consistent starting 11, plus the 2 loans have really changed the squad on paper to me, we look better at both ends of the pitch.

Onward on upwards, just the small matter of Walsall who are top, away from home next, Cheltenham, who sit just above us and then Salford who are 3rd. Wouldn't want it too easy now would we!!

  3. So, here goes how its started...

I've played the 3 games over the Christmas period, a win (1-0 v bottom of the league Harrogate), a defeat away to Grimsby (7th in the league at the time) and a 0-0 away to Forest Green (they are 2nd).

Overall the squad is really lacking in my opinion, both in terms of quality and how I want us to play. I've decided to go 3 CB's, then either wing backs or full backs depending on if we are home or away, then a mid of a front 3, either an AM and 2 up top or wide attacking players, I'm not 100% sure yet what will work best.

One thing I hate is working with an ageing squad, don't ask why, I always go for the younger players who I find adapt better and I can develop. Loans is going to have to be the way forward though most probably due to the lack of funds. I've brought in Rhys Williams from Liverpool as CB, as a Liverpool fan I know plenty about him and think he can add some quality alongside Wheater and Piergianni. I've also got in Rodel Richards from Spurs to add some quality up top, pretty much based on reviews from others who have had him in league 2. Going out, Ntambwe is under offer, Bahamboula too to save me some funds in wages as we only had a thousand to spend on wages and I need reinforcements.

We are now 5 points above the relegation zone but 22nd iun the league on 21 points, however, 29 points is mid table, so a few wins and we can move ourselves right up the league however our upcoming fixtures aren't too kind, a lot of teams who are well above us and in the play offs or pushing for them themselves.... Screen shots below, more depth to be posted later once I have some more playing time.

So, after started myself on December 21st (Brazil pre season), I found Oldham sitting 21st in League two, well well below their expected league position

A club that, according to another thread, haven't finished in the top half of any league for just over 10 years!!  - Talk about a tough watch.

In real life, their controversial owner has a habit of interfering with first team affairs, hence Paul Scholes's short stint at the club recently.

I've only just fired this up so I will update more once I properly have a look round, but overall we don't look in great shape. 4 points above the relegation zone, 14 points off the play-offs and a pretty poor playing squad, I am going to have to find a quick fix tactic that puts some points on the board, We also only 400k in the bank, with the club losing around 140k a month according to the expenditure sheet. No transfer budget, just over 1k in the wage budget, I don't think we will be able to do much in the market.

Wish me luck, I am off for an hour of research to see what I have to work with!

  5. Not sure where to start, might go my local team Tranmere possibly in league 2 to start, if not then I might start it in November 2021 and take whoever is struggling. I really want to do a project on this years that I can run for years, the winning every win in the Prem just doesnt do it for me any more I want to build a club properly.

Salford maybe another option, any other recommendations?

I just need to hope Santa does me a favor but I am sure my missus can take a hint haha.

Great to see you back, nice one! You really have been plain lazy for years (in FM terms) but always good to have our original founder back amongst us

    Ha, very lazy mate.

If I am not mistaken when me and you used to have our games you were Derby and I was Yeovil in the Championship (then promoted to Prem!!)

I do still play FM and have for years but more limited game time so more read the threads than contributed as I'd have posted about 4 games a week, would have been a tedious read haha

  7. Afternoon all....

Great to see this thread is still going. I actually started the original "Football league thread" about 8-9 years ago to gather us all in one place as I found having a separate thread for all the EFL clubs wasn't working whereas this puts us all in one group.

After dipping in and out the game for years I have got back into FM20 and have asked Santa for FM2021. Due to a change in jobs etc I'll have a lot more time for posting my drivel in here too, so can't wait to be back at it.

How is everyone finding the new game? Is it a improvement on last year?

  8. It is something that needs addressing, however, there is an argument that if someone is 100% blind and cannot see a computer screen etc, maybe some of the responsibility is down to the computer companies rather than the game developers. For example windows should have in built system for blind people that maybe has a voice over etc.

I don't think this is 100% SIgames responsibility

  9. I agree that there should be a more simplified version of FM for people who are blind/have sight problems etc, however, how far can this go? I am actually partially colour blind and struggle to see the colour of red/green when mixed together. Can you imagine how I feel when Liverpool are playing Celtic on a green pitch? I mean there are ways and means to get round things, but could you imagine how long it would take for someone who is partially sighted to have the whole FM interface read out to them by a voice over?
