  1. I kept many of my original players, all the way up to La Liga. Some of them were afwul quality wise, but I deemed it so important to keep the young players in the U19 squad when they are 16-17 and then giving them first time football out on loan after that. And running out of squad depth is obviously a nightmare. One little trick that may be forgotten sometimes is to add contract extension clauses in the contracts. That makes a 5 year deal in to an 8 year deal! On a side note: Every challenge is indeed different, and I havent finished mine yet, but I have to say that for me it was really important to focus on developing a solid goalkeeper and central defenders. I played three 16 year olds in those positions for a while, based purely on their potential, not their ability. There is just no way you can compete in the top flight if those players havent developed properly. But then again, that was very much based on the exact team I had, and the quality that was available to me.
  2. Real Jean FC Season Summary 2034-2035 La Liga Champions! 16 seasons after taking over Real Jean, we claim our first big trophy! We won La Liga with 77 points, the second lowest winning points tally since the start of the save It came down to a great title challenge between Barcelona, Athletic Bilbao, Real Socided and us. Real Madrid have only been in the top three once in the last 5 years, and were never in the running, finishing on a sad 57 points by their standards. We were in great form coming in to the finishing stretch of the season, beating Real Marid and Sevilla 2-0. We then faced Chelsea in the semi-final of the Europa League, drawing 1-1 at Stamford Bridge. Playing Thursday games in the Europa League with a thin squad was draining our energy, and we followed up our draw at Chelsea with a terrible 1-0 loss away to Real Valladolid in the 36th league round. This was followed by a loss to Chelsea and a loss to Athletico Madrid in the league.. Luckily. Barcelona and Real Sociedad lost points as well, and it all came down to the last game of the season. We hammered Sporting Gijon 6-2 at home, what a way to finish the season off and claim the title in front of our fans! Now its all about finishing in the top 3 going forward so we can get an automatic Champions League spot. Because we still have a huge job in front of us. Yes, we won La Liga, but I have to say we were lucky, and we are way off contending for the Champions League. We got knocked out of the group stage yet again, in a group with Liverpoool, Benfica and FC Basel. Something just isn't clicking in Europe, and we need to probably do a lot more squad rotation next season. In the summary from last season I mentioned that we struggle to dominate against mid table teams. That continued this season, but in October we did a change to our tactics. I felt that we were a little "all over the place" and our tactics/team instructions lacked an identity. I spent a lot of time working on it, and decided to make two new tactics. I kept the same formation, 4-4-2 with offensive wingers, but now we were playing one of two ways: 1. Very aggressive gegenpress with high press/high defensive line, really high tempo and pass into space 2. Sit deep, low block, very direct passing into space This really helped, and we were able to maximise the quality of my team, being physical, aggresive and fast, and minimising the lack of quality in passing/dribbling/creativity etc. After losing my best player of all time, Badr Senoussi, a few years ago, this change was way overdue. He was our only playmaker, everything went through him, and for some reason I havent been able to really adapt to our post-Senoussi era, until now. That felt really good, and I feel that we have maximised the talent in the squad to win the league. Juan Jesus Nicolas was the revelation of the season, and he has the potential to be a world class player in a couple of years. Having spent last season on loan at Huesca in LaLiga 2, he took a place in the starting eleven this season. He only scored 14 goals, but he is a fantastic forward that really gives an extra dimention to our offensive game. He is luckily on a contract for four more years. We are facing some difficult decisions this summer, probably very relatable to everyone here: When should young talents get a spot in the starting eleven, or should they be loaned out for another year? We have some really good talent coming up, especially Ikechukwu Garba on left back. We also have a new young goalkeeper coming up in Lolo Castro, but with Naim having a decent season for us this season, he might get another year out on loan. Our captain and defensive leader, Jose Manuel, had the best season of his career, finishing 2nd in the La Liga player of the year. But he is 30, has a passing ability of 5, which is not really suitable for a gegenpress tactic, and we have young players coming up. They desperately need to play La Liga football, especially Alex Perez. If I loan him out for another year, I really dont have any options for CB on the bench.. Decisions, decisions! Goals for next season: Top 3 in La Liga, Quarter final in Champions League. 3. Real Jean FC Season Summary 2033-2034 After a really good season last year, we managed to follow up in the league this year, finishing 3rd. Europe was more dissapointing, and we got knocked out in the group stage. That would have been fair enough in a really tough group, but facing Inter, Benfica and Spartak Moscow, we should have done better. We are doing well against top teams overall, but we are struggling to win our "average" league games comfortably. Of course, that has to do with our lack of quality, so not a big mystery really! We went on to the quarter final in the Europa League, and got knocked out by Juventus. Our youth department is doing really well and that gives me hope for the future! Next season I think will be more of the same, we dont really have any major talents coming up this summer I think and we will have to work with that we got. We do have to promote a central defender though, since our long serving central defender Eugenio wants to move on. He has been our 3rd choice central defender and that is a gap I need to fill. 4. Real Jean FC Season Update 2032-2033 A fantastic season, finishing 2nd behind Barcelona in La Liga. Last season we finished 4th and we lost Badr Senoussi on a free transfer, our best player by far. I thought that would be a massive setback, but even though he is a great player, it forced me to change tactics, and that worked really well. We went from a classic 4-3-3 with a DM to a more offensive 4-2-2-2 with two offensive wingers and two strikers, one pressing forward on defend and an advanced forward. Our main striker for the last few seasons, Santiago Sanchez, took the pressing forward role. Constantino Santos, a 21 year old striker who had spent the last two seasons on loan in the 2nd divison did really well up front, scoring 14 goals and making team of the year! Lolo Guillen was player of the year in the right winger role, a constant threat to the oppositon, finishing with 11 goals and 13 assist. A lot more pace and counter attacking focus really made us a lot better this year. Yes, we controlled games a lot more when we had Senoussi, but our team is overall a lot better and the future isnt looking too bad. We had another good Youth Intake, and with our facilities and 15 (!) affiliated clubs we really should have high demands in this department. Overall we have a really good generation of players coming up, and now its all about managing the development. We did our best in the Champions League, but with Manchester United, Inter and Zenit in our group it was okay finishing 3rd. In the Europa League we beat Hapoel comfortably 6-0 over two games, but then Chelsea became too strong, beating us 2-1 on aggregate. A 1-0 win at Stamford Bridge was great, but they were better over two games. 5. Real Jean FC Season Update 2031-2032 Another great season, but the last one in a while? We finished 4th place in La Liga, same as last year, and did great in the Champions League, advancing from the "group of death" with Bayern Munich, Manchester City and Basel. We had several players who took big steps quality wise this year and had a really good youth intake. All in all a great season. But... We lost our star man, our best player by far (!!!!), Badr Senoussi, on a free transfer... Senoussi, who finished the season with 17 assist in the league from central midfield and an average rating of 7,34, had refused to sign a new contract for the last couple of seasons. With his contract coming to and end this year there was no chance of getting it renewed. He finished 3rd in the player of the year award in La Liga, and will definitely get a big contract at a huge club. This is a massive blow for us and we will have to rethink our whole approach tactically. Everything evolved around him... To be quite honest it is also a motivational blow for me, I just dont see us finishing anywhere near Europe next year.. We have a couple of young talents, but they are far away from La Liga level at this point. Maybe a two-striker system and a more direct approach will be our solution, because now we have just lost all our midfield creativity.. But we did great this year, and we just have to move on, even without Senoussi. 6. Real Jean FC Season update 2030-2031 After a 7th place finish last season we returned to Europe. Last time we saw European action we really struggled with the additional fixtures and I feared the same this year. But we had our best season yet! A really strong 4th place league finish will give us Champions League football next year. We also did really well in the Europa League. After beating Ajax 9-0 we faced Chelsea in the second knockout stage. That was unfortaunately our last stop, losing 5-3 over two games, but we gave everything we got. In the league we were overall stronger both in offense and defense. We were able to dominate games to a lot bigger extent than earlier, and it makes me optimistic about the future. But! There are problems lurking in the distance. Our by far (!!) best player, Badr Senoussi, is entering the last year of his contract. He seemes set on not renewing and that would be a massive blow to the overall quality of the team. Senoussi had 9 goals and 6 assists from central midfield, and he is our dynamo in every attack against an estabelished defense that we have. I am trying everything I can to renew his contract, but I fear that we are reaching a "post-Senoussi" era... Our youth intake was not good this year, but I cant complain really. We have been really lucky over the last few seasons. We have plenty of affiliated clubs that gives us some extra players in the youth intake, lets hope that gives us more talents next season! 7. A bit of a bragging post I guess, but with all the hardship we go through on this challenge we have to treasure the highlights. Finished second in my group in Europa League, behind Liverpool. Drew Ajax in the first stage of the knock out stage, first game at home. Everything clicked! We were 3-0 up after 18 minutes, when my striker Santiago Sanchez chiped over the goalkeeper from 10 meters out... Our central defender Jose Manuel scored a hat-trick! His first goals of the season! With so many frustrating performances I've had over the last few seasons, what a joy this was!!
  8. My Real Jean team had professional status when I took over, so I can't be certain, but I would think this is the most pressing one? This gives you the opportunity to lock in the one or two talented players that might come through every year which certainly is key. Otherwise, if you for some strange reason find yourself with a really talented player you might lose him straight away. And I would guess that professional status also covers general improvements in the club and gives you a better chance of getting other improvements. Professional status also gives you full time contracts for coaches, which in turn, gives you better training for seniors and youth players.
  9. Real Jean FC Season update 2029-2030 After two consecutive years of finishing 8th place, we finally saw some progress. We finished 7th in the table, and even though that is just one place higher, this means a return to Europe. My two best players, Senoussi in midfield and my goalkeeper Naim, refuse to sign new contracts, so hopefully playing in Europe will make that happen. Playing wise we didn't really see big progress, but we have some decent talents coming through, and we need to start making changes. We have to many players with a first team spot that does not have any real quality, and I am now trying to phase them out. Our first "star" player, central defender Eugenio, had to start on the bench for the last 4 games, having to give way for 15 year old (!!) Hassan Maher, a very talented centre back that came through the youth intake. Very excited about him, and hopefully he can lead the way forward for a new generation? If I lose Senoussi or Naim I am in extremely big trouble, so time is of the essence. We have to step up and start contending (even though we have by far the weakest team in the league). I have been able to get farmer clubs in Europe, connecting with 1860 Munchen, FC Twente, Sochaux and CD Santa Clara (Portugal). This gives me some pretty decent talent in the youth intake, and can prove to be very important. I started to play a bit more offensive this year, and it paid off. We were able to control more home games than in previous years, and that was important in a year when star winger Jorge Vela didnt really play at his best. I am used to him scoring 10 goals from the wing, this year I think he got three. So moving the whole team more forward as a unit was key. Away we struggle more against the big teams than we used to, and sometimes I can just put the game on key highlights and maximum speed. If we go down early against a big team, there is no coming back... 10. Good points you mention here @dkouv, and I agree. I think I have been too focused on loaning out players, without getting anything in return in terms of improvement. I have state of the art training facilities both for seniors and juniors, as well as pretty good junior coaching. And I shouldnt be too greedy either probably, after all I am in La Liga, so shouldn't expect to get top class players every year from the academy. But will definitely look at keeping more players in my U19 team rather than loaning them out. But you can now add players from U19 to train with the first team. Any thoughts on that? It sounds like a really good idea, considering my first team coaches also have good attributes on junior coaching. But I expect there is a downside.
  11. Do you guys have any general guidelines you follow for player development? Is it better to keep players under the age of 18 at the club for best development?
  12. Player development: Are there any general guidelines for player development when it comes to loan vs. development in youth teams? I loan out players a lot, but I think it might not be beneficial for their development as the teams I loan them out to do not have great traning facilities and coaches.
  13. This save is great fun and is probably one of the most exciting challenges I've played. And really enjoyable (and often funny) to read about other peoples progress, This challenge really brings another dimension to FM, and depending on which country you start in the challenge is so different. But jesus, it tests my patience!! Our 9th season in La Liga, and its so difficult to make progress. The talents that our coming up are just not near good enough La Liga level. We are predicted 20th every year, even though we keep finishing on the upper half of the table. I need to take a couple of big steps forward soon, otherwise I might try the challenge somewhere else. But then again, its such a fun save!
  14. Real Jean FC Season Update 2028-2029 Our second 8th place finish in a row, and as last year, we are one point shy of Europe. But in many ways we played better, we were more solid and were able to control more games than we did last year and to be fair, this is probably the first season when I would say we were a little bit unlucky. We drew a lot of games we should have won. But considering that last year we were in the Champions League (where we had no business being in at all) we should have done better! Our last game, home to Real Madrid, we took the lead, but unfortunately ended up losing 1-2. But all in all, it was a pretty decent year, although I am getting a little bit impatient, there are not exactly tons of talent coming up. Maybe I am too focused on sending players out on loan? They get plenty of games, but dont end up with great progress. There were not any spesific stages of our campaign, we were decent overall without having any really good our really bad periods. We struggle away against most teams, and our lack of a really good central defensive midfielder is getting clearer each day. Unfortunately we did not get anything in that department in our youth intake, but a decent striker in 15 year old Diego (scored on his debut) as well as a dynamic all around midfielder in Samuel Jimenez. Our best player, Badr Senoussi, does not want to renew his contract. But he is not going anywhere, as his 6 week injury showed how essential he is for our creativity. Jorge Vela on the right wing keeps being our point/assist king, even after turing 32. He has been with me from the start, and is a club legend by now. We get another expansion of our stadium and training facilities. Our stadium, built a couple of years ago, will then reach 56 875 capacity. 15. Real Jean FC Season Update 2027-2028 Our first year playing in Europe, and handling La Liga and the CL at the same time proved a great, but fun, challenge. We started really bad, only winning 2 out of our first 9 league games. For a long time we were floating around 12th to 17th place, and never finding any real form. At one stage the captain called a team meeting, not satisfies with my management. After I told them it was all their fault things started to get better. We did a few tactical changes, mostly individual instructions, and it paid off. We finished the season really strong and for the last remaining games we were fighting for a European spot. Unfortunately we finished the season with a dreadful 2-5 loss to Valencia, after being 2-0 up after 10 minutes... We finished 8th place, one single point from a European spot. But, to be fair, it its not Champions League, it doesnt matter that much. This gives me more time to rest players, and we have plenty of money. The Champions League was a tough experience for us, ending with 2 points and a knockout from the group stage. We got drawn against Bayern Munchen, Liverpool and Benfica, so not an easy group. In the first game we were down 0-3 to Bayern at home after 14 minutes... the game actually ended 3-4, Bayern scoring the winner in the 89th minute... All in all a pretty decent season. We managed to get a couple of points from a very tough CL group, and I cant be to unhappy with 8th place in the league. The media predictions had us again at 20th place, so what more can I ask really. Some of our young players took big steps this year, especially Senoussi and Tejero. Our stadium is being upgraded at the end of the season, and my training/youth facilities are once again being upgraded. Our youth intake was, as last year, quite dissapointing. No real stand out players, which is a shame! 16. Training question. I have just now started to regulate the "Rest" section of team training. I have now set it to double intensity for the players that are above 90% condition. Not doing this before might have cost me a lot in terms of development. What are you guys doing here?
  17. @Fadedaf, great fun following your journey. I guess you are Norwegian, like me, since you're playing with Oppsal. Must be a mental test more than anything to do this challenge with Oppsal. Can't wait to see you try and complete it in the Champions League
  18. Real Jean FC Season Update 2026-2027 A fantastic season for us, a huge step up from last years 11th place finish. We made the Champions League, finishing 4th! Media prediction was as expected that we finished dead last, what a year! After a very unstable season last year I decided to make some changes. I decided to train our 3rd choice centre back, Lolo Vargas, as a right back, in a try to get some consistency in that position. That worked well, and was a big strengthening of our back line. I also replaced my long serving left back, Felipe Alfonso, a player who has been great for us, but really only on the offence. His defensive skillset is awful, and he was turning into a liability. The remaining squad took some good steps forward, especially in the goalkeeping department. Khalid Naim has really proven worthy of being our first choice at only 16 years old, and he is already close to La Liga standards. I dont know what it is about Real Jean and season openers, but we almost always do well. This time we beat Real Madrid 4-1 (!!), and that set the tone for the rest of the season. Although we were not fighting for a CL spot until the end of the season we were always in the top half, and we really never got one of our classic terrible run of forms, which has been the case in the previous seasons. Coming close to the end we were looking really good, even fighting for a medal. But a couple of weak draws against weak teams and an expected loss to Barcelona, everything was wide open. In the last round of the season we were fighting against Valencia, Getafe and Rayo Vallecano, all four teams had the opportunity for a medal.. We were up against Racing Santander, a weak injury plagued team sitting in 18th place.. All we had to do was win. We were shockingly bad.... We drew the game 3-3 but deserved to lose.... But for some reason, Getafe drew 0-0 at Alaves and Rayo Vallecano lost 2-0 to Betis. Valencia beat Osasuna 3-1 and secured 3rd place, but we managed with our draw to maintain 4th place and secure Champions League!! We are so far away from a Champions League team that I its laughable, but it doesnt matter. We will get extremely valuable experience and our club reputation will take a big jump. Santiago Sanchez, our leading striker, finally turned chances into goals this year, and that was really key. He ended on 14 goals, third place in the "Top Goalscorer" table, and won the Spanish Top Goalscorer of the Year. Our best player, Jorge Vela, made Team of the Year. I won Manager of the Year. We also got a pretty decent left back in the Youth Intake, Sebastian Tejero. Unfortunately the only good player in our entire intake. I got so mad i fired our HOYD, after less than a year in the job. Tejero went straight into the team. His stats shown in the screenshot underneath tells you everything you need to know when I say we are far away from CL quality... Goals for next season: - Mid table finish - Finish 3rd (or better) in CL group stages - Qtr final in Copa del Rey Season | League | Position | Copa Del Rey | Europe | Notes ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2019/20 | Segunda Division B | 9th | 2ns round | N/A | Okay start up season 2020/21 | Segunda Division B | 2nd | 3rd round | N/A | Promoted through play off 2021/22 | La Liga 123 | 7th | 3rd round | N/A | Promoted through play off, back-to-back 2022/23 | La Liga | 10th | 2nd round | N/A | Great first season, finishing mid table 2023/24 | La Liga | 14th | 2nd round | N/A | No progress to speak of, managed to get worse 2024/25 | La Liga | 8th | 5th round | N/A | Solid season, finished 8th 2025/26 | La Liga | 11th | 4th round | N/A | Decent season, good club progress if not so much on the pitch 2026/27 | La Liga | 4th | 4th round | N/A | Amazing year, predicted 20th, finished 4th!
  19. @optimusprimal82, I play in Spain so I cant speak for the Brexit issue, but I can attest to the fact that it is hard to maintain young talents. In Spain you have to have a release clause for every player, I have simply set those extremely high, and declined every offer. I would look for a club with the best possible facilities, yes. My Real Jean FC team didn't really have that, but what we did have was some really talented players that the previous manager had signed in the previous year. You choose where you want to start, but personally I think its great fun that people are picking different nations. But beware, read the rules for the nation you choose! I first started in Germany before realising that it was not allowed for 16 year olds to play. When the start of the season came, I had 8 eligible players...
  20. Real Jean FC Season Update 2025-2026 A decent, but unspectacular season. Last season we finished 8th, but that did not really highlight the obvious flaws of the team. A 11th place this season was probably also a bit lucky, the foundation certainly made in the first half of the season. We started okay, beating Las Palmas 2-1 in the season opener. Losses to Sevilla and Real Zaragoza and a win at home to Girona was followed by a crushing 0-4 defeat at home to Real Madrid. After this we did pretty good, a strong goalless draw against Bilbao away was followed by a good couple of months that saw us beat Atl. Madrid 4-2, Real Sociedad 2-1 and Villareal 2-1 away. After the winter break we did pretty bad to be honest, even for our standards. We won three games in a row against Sevilla, Las Palmas and Real Zaragoza, but other than that we never really found any form. I have decided to use my young GK prospect, Khalid Naim, and he has made some very big errors, but I cant expect class from a 17 year old goalkeeper either. But he has made some good progress, and I hope he can become a La Liga quality player. To be fair, I dont see the team progressing beyond mid table/relegation struggle next year. We will for sure be tipped last, and that is a fair assessment. But we are moving in to a new stadium, we are getting a second upgrade of our training facilities, and our youth recruitment has been expanded. So we just have to keep on trying to improve and the foundation for success in the future is there. We got new owners at the end of the season, but they are not looking to make radical changes, which is fine. Our youth intake was overall probably the worst in my time at Real Jean. There are basically no one that can ever be potential players for the first team, except for Badr Senoussi, a 16 year old dutch central midfielder. He has gotten some caps for the first team at the end of the season, and he even got his first goal in the last game of the season, a very solid game coming of the bench against Espanyol (we won 3-1). Goals for next season: Maybe I lack ambition, but it reamains: Survival! 21. Real Jean FC Season Update 2024-2025 After a dissapointing second season in La Liga, the team took a big step forward this year. We finished in 8th place, just 4 points away from a European spot. No doubt, our performances are not worthy of 8th place, even less a place in Europe, but all in all it was a fantastic year. The foundation for this years success was made in the start of the season. A 2-1 win over Celta Vigo at home kickstarted a run of 12 games where we only lost twice, and that was against Real Madrid and Barcelona. A fantastic 2-0 win over Atletico Madrid was the highlight, closely followed by a 1-0 win against Villareal. After the winter break our form took a turn for the worse. We started the second half of the season with a terrible 2-6 loss at home to Valencia, and after that we didnt win any of our next 6 games.. We turned it around with a home win over Getafe, and after that we did okay, lost several games but also got some decent wins. We finished the season 2-2 against Real Sociedad, which was nice. Overall, we dont have any quality in the team that indicated us getting a spot in Europe. To be fair, we will for sure be tipped for 20th place next season as well. But we do have some exciting talent coming through, 17 year old Cristobal Gutierrez is probably the most promising. Our youth intake was overall the most disappointing we have had. But we have been lucky with it over the last few years, so we cant complain. Luckily though, the only decent talent in this years intake was a goalkeeper! We have had an absolutely terrible goalkeeper since the start of the save, and hopefully 16 year old Khalid Naim can be our future star. He will be the first choice next year, as there is no point using the GK we have now, as he cant get any better. In about 16 months we will be moving in to a new stadium. In the meantime, we are getting yet another improvement of our training/youth facilities. Our data analysis facilities are now excellent. Goals for next season will be a mid-table finish, but staying in the league is more than enough.
