When the tactic clicks, I’ve had some decent results and nice goals! However it’s currently a bit inconsistent for me, but think that’s more my players! will either win 3-0 or lose 1-0, with a lot of the goals coming late on 😡, but overall like the movements of the team
Having the same outcome here. Pretty sure it's my team. A lack of strength in defense is being exposed against big teams. I bought some younger players who will grow into the role because somehow the AI has gone nuts with fees. 5 clubs spent over £150mil on a single player (2025) and 3 of them with me in the Prem so I just don't have the cash to compete.

Great post @engamohd How does it fare against teams who park the bus? Do they still fall into the trap or do you need to apply this tactic against better teams who will push for a goal?
I bet you get some good 'edge of your seat gameplay' either way. I would love to see some end of season stats with this. Particularly how it managed in Europe.

I wouldn't worry too much about discontent with pre-season training. Once you go to normal training it should all go quiet.

This looks like the kind of formation that can carry you to the Prem but will drag you back down in a season or two lol.
As you say, you need the players. I like a defensive winger but they're hard roles to fill. Very intensive!
Probably work with a huge team and maybe a smaller one like Leicester who have quality in places.

I'm really enjoying this tactic and it's sparked me back into enjoying the game.
I know this isn't a plug and play tactic but as you pointed out, others have had some quick success. I tried it on a whim as I was running out of ideas in the new season after a bad start with Reading and we played so much better.
10 games in and we still lose some (squad isn't designed for the playstyle yet) but when it clicks, we play some beautiful football. The movement and passing is really fun to watch.
The back 3 defensive positions scream 'this won't work!' but for some reason we are more secure at the back than I was with a 4-2-3-1 lol.
Loving it!

Save 1 - Final Season Review - Barca Tactic
First, I must admit that I got a little complacent and simmed a majority of the second half of this season. Once I felt I had the tactic down to how I wanted it to play, I just let the team do their thing. Unfortunately, the ass. man did not use my preferred lineup a majority of the time, but we still had some amazing results.
Atleti do the double - Winning La Liga and the Spanish Cup
We had a large 7 point lead in march that fizzled away with some weird sim losses, but very happy with winning the league.
In the Champions League, we drew Liverpool in the quarter finals. We tied them 1-1 in the first leg away, then lost 2-1 in ET at home. It was a very close competition, but all in all I'm not too upset at losing to Liverpool, a touch match up for anyone.
End of season analyst report
Final Tactic - I'm very happy with how this ended up. I may try playing a few more games with my Lazio squad, as this was a very fun and exciting brand of football. It holds true to positional play rules, and so far has been one of the best at being structured in the back and fluid in the front. There is always going to be discussions about how to really mimic that 2010/2011 Barca squad, and FM I think limits the creativity and fluidity of tactics to make it near impossible. But to me, this was as close as I've gotten with trying many times over the last 3 years.
Players
Thomas Lemar - Messi Role
Lemar ended the season as our number one choice for the Messi Role, as an AP-A. He offered great build up play, an attacking threat, and good creativity. His stats backed this up.
Yannick Carrasco - Pedro role
What a surprising season for Yannick. He played lights out when he wasn't hurt, putting in 32 goals and 13 assists across all competitions! He was not pegged by me to be a starter, but proved too good not to play.
Angel Correa/Luis Suarez - Villa role
These two split time here. Suarez played a much better second half of the season than Correa and turned it on big late. He also surprised with the number of assists. Correa had 10 goals and 4 assists. Below is Suarez:
Saul - Iniesta role
Saul at times played brilliantly, playing very expansive football. I think he could have better seasons then this stat wise, but overall performed well.
Koke - Xavi role
Hotly contested role, but he played well and I liked the way he worked. More assists and less goals than Saul. I wish you could change the stats screen here to show key passes and chances created. He had 83 key passes (Lemar had team best with 91).
Renan Lodi - Alves role
He played an awful first third of the season. Once we settled on the FB-au PRD, he turned it on. He still I think could have done better, and someone else certainly could who has better mentals. Lodi's technicals and physicals are great, but his mentals are far from what I would want out of a total footballer. I think upgrading this player would be a huge plus for a long term save with this.
Long term save info
If someone were to keep managing Atleti, here are some thoughts for what I would do.
- Upgrade Defense
- Lodi is close but not there as discussed, need a better mentals player for total football
- Right back is a weak spot, need someone who is good defensively, good at recycling possession, crossing isn't important
- Upgrade 1 CB, need a proper BPD attribute wise, as there is no Pique on this squad.
- Keep the midfield diamond (Llorente, Koke, Saul, Lemar)
For financial information, we only sold on Diego Costa at start of season. The year 2 starting payroll is 231 mm leaving us 21 mm room, and 17.22mm transfer budget (sorry in US dollars). There is room here to make some of the above moves, with getting rid or some high salary players as well.
Player PPM thoughts
To get the most out of some of these players, there has been discussion around certain PPM's that will really help. I believe this remains true post season 1 for the midfield maestros, the messi role, the two wing players, as well as the Alves role. There can certainly be a lot of differing thoughts here, and certainly more or less could always work, but I think these at a minimum would be helpful to have for these roles.
Messi Role - Comes deep to get ball, gets into opposition area, plays one twos, runs with ball often
Iniesta Role - Plays One twos, runs with ball often, Tries killer balls often
Xavi role - Dictates tempo, , comes deep to get ball, possibly also plays one twos (wasn't able to get this trained and tested, if you add this can change from RPM to DLP)
Busquets role - Comes deep to get ball, Likes to switch ball to wide areas
Both WIngers - Cuts inside from respective wings
Alves role - Plays one-twos, gets forward whenever possible, runs with ball down (assigned) flank

After a run of 5 games without a win, my Premier league new boys Reading were facing the mighty Man Utd (top by 10 points at Christmas and unbeaten). Press conference asked me how I plan to cope and I saw an option about tactical surprises. I clicked it and did the cardinal sin of 'plug and play' with this strikerless tactic.
I think the AI was baffled because we managed to win 2-1 lol. Surprising how well positioned everyone was at the back.
We went back to struggling afterwards so it's certainly not a tactic for the underdog and we just dont have the players for a short passing game but I thought I'd share that little success 👌
Looking forward to the next tactic!

Can I ask, outside of the comments that @crusadertsar made earlier, did you report back on the first match (mid season perhaps?) where the team has little to no familiarity with the tactic? Or did you try with the editor on to maximise familiarity and see how it works on a team that is used to it?
I don't ask to criticise your feedback, moreso to get an understanding of it. Some tactics like this work almost immediately but this one strikes me as a work in progress that won't yield results unless you have players that are used to it.

Think you're pretty much bang on here but important to note that it's not necessary for a player to be playing every single week until maybe the age of 20/21. A decent amount of league/cup starts a season will suffice until then.
Thats true, I used to turn down loan requests for youth because they said the player would be a squad player or rotation option, this was in favour of offers of being a regular starter but at a lesser club. Once I figured that they wouldn't need so much game time but would benefit more from the better training facilities, my players seemed to be happier with their loans.

I have seen some schedules others have created and they tend to be developed to focus on the club DNA/style of play you want to go with. These did include both physical and tactical elements, which seems to work well for young players in my experience.
Once a player reaches 18 they really need to be on the pitch to develop the mental attributes. So if you can get them a successful loan then it doesn't really matter what you're training them on as they won't be in your team to get trained.
I'm sure others will correct me if I am wrong, but this is my understanding.

I've always wondered about the enganche as you rarely see them used and would like to see how this goes for you following advice you recieve here.
I have tried tactics with one before but he never seems to stand out. I think it's is perhaps a combination over having the wrong player for the role and my own lack of understanding of what he does/needs to be effective.

Loving this so far! Particularly like the emphasis on the attacking aspects as I feel like catenaccio etc is often stereotyped as an ultra defensive system particularly in the modern day. I will be interested to see how you go in terms of mentality and also breaking down teams who park the bus
I'm also wondering this. I am really keen to see how this works and how effective it is. It seems like it could really come alive in the new ME but as you rightly point out, there are teams who park the bus and if you do this with a strong team (like AC Milan) then the majority of opponents could park the bus, which renders most counter attacks in effective.

Oh and btw, I think roma would be fun with this. I think zaniolo could work out great long term in the messi role.
Yeah, it sucks that he's injured for 9 months when you start lol.

I agree we can't ever get exactly the fluidity of tactics and different attacking variation on the game without multiple tactics and tweaking, but my latest posted tactic is getting as close as I've yet to achieve at defensive structure in the back and extreme fluidity in the final third. I suggest people give it a try themselves just to see if you get anything close to what I'm seeing, because it's been quite a good site to see.
I've just started a DNA save with Roma and am looking to implement this, what training would you recommend for this?
EDIT: Oh and top work, this looks great and I can't want to see if I can knock Juv off their perch lol.

Really interested to see how this plays out!

I heard the latest patch really did a number on some formations. I don't know if this is proven (I haven't seen much about it here) but a number of Youtube 'content creators' have raised this enough for me to think it has some weight.
Personally, I was doing really well with a 4-2-3-1 with Reading. Got them promoted and even managed to get some wins and draws under my belt. My squad is nowhere near good enough for the Prem so I don't know if it was just good momentum for a few in-game weeks or just my tactic being on point, but since just before Xmas I have been losing all my games, even against teams on a similar level.

i have been using the ideas of that 1970 Brazil team i came across this and it really does play wonderful football a great article and write up as well https://www.thehighertempopress.com/2020/11/play-like-1970-brazil/
Have you been using it on FM21? If so, how does it play?

Glad other people are enjoying it, but this has never worked for me. Giving up multiple goals per game from 20-30 yards out. No one closing down the space or providing pressure in between the defensive and midfield lines.
Long shots seem to be a bit OP this year. The AI scores a worldie every other game against me. The Vanarama North end of season DVD is going to be a bunch of 30 yard wonder goals against my poor Leamington side.

This was a really good read, thank you.
I seem to be similar to you where I tried all manner of formations expecting a style to develop but didn't really know how I wanted the team to play.
I have never used a Target man before because I have only ever heard bad things. How does he work out for you? Does he yield many goals?
Do you recommend any particular physical attributes for a TM? (Tall for example).

This is great, thank you

A way to replace default training schedules with custom ones?

Not that I know of, but it's not that much of a hassle. I do this each season for first team and my youth squads and it's a 5 minute job at most.
You get notified when matches change (and I think each week as a heads up) so you can change the schedule to reflect that.
