That's actually not a bad idea at all.

This is a prime example of why I hate posting on this forum. Negative, sad people with nothing better to do ready to jump down your throat given the slightest opportunity.
Does it say that Romero is consistent or good in big matches? No, it doesn't.
I ask Cleon why he's gone for such a player.
And some idiot says I've used an editor to find out and another idiot says I shouldn't spoil it for others. Nor did I even get an answer. Just a silly soundbite.

From asking one genuine question to this. Pathetic.
Sorry mate, I asked one genuine question myself, as I was genuinely curious to know how you knew Romero is inconsistent. I didn't imply anything, I simply asked because I didn't find anything in the article to indicate that. No need to get all defensive. I have absolutely no way of knowing whether or not he is inconsistent or can't handle big games. My point is that his stats certainly appear to be those of someone who is playing consistently at a high level.

None taken mate. Good luck with the little one.

Maybe he checked himself with better scouts? Or maybe he's had him before?
Or maybe he used the editor? Or the in-game editor? Or a third party in-game editor.
I'm not sure why it's an issue.
I never said that it's an issue. No need to get so defensive mate, I asked a simple question out of curiosity because from what is presented in front us indicates nothing of the sort. So I was interested to see how he arrived at that conclusion.
Besides, he's scored 22 league goals in 33 league games @ an average rating of 7.67, that is not inconsistent in my book.....

I'm sure reports can state that players dont look forward to the big games or something like that? Although I've only ever found that in youth or those in the lower leagues.
You are correct. However there is a Romero report in the article which doesn't state that. It lists his competitive streak as his only weakness.

Cleon, why have you gone for Romero, a player who isn't consistent nor good in important matches?
How would you know what his consistency is like or how good he is in important matches? These are both hidden attributes. The coach report that Cleon showed of Romero also doesn't indicate any of this.

What sort of things would you keep in mind when playing a Counter strategy as a big club? Is it possible to play this way but with a high block so you arent completely conceding possession?
I am worried that if I pl;ay this way against defensively minded sides, the game will just completely fizzle out.
Personally, I wouldn't want to play with a higher line. You won't actually get the counter attacks to trigger in the Match Engine. Remember too that in the case that a counter attack doesn't trigger, that your side will play a relatively patient possession style of football (In my experience anyway).
I'm playing a Very Fluid Counter Attack 4-4-1-1 with Arsenal and it's one of my best seasons. I often end up with more than 50% possession anyways, but ultimately I'm not concerned with possession, rather efficient utilization of possession. If you're not able to beat the more defensive sides, then typically you aren't creating enough space or using space that is created efficiently. Something to look at in that case would be the player roles and movement.
That's just my opinion, others may have a different view.

I must say that my opinion of the BWM role was exactly the same until this version of FM. I was more a CM(d) kinda guy myself, but I decided to try more of the roles that I had ignored or written off before and one of those was deciding to use Coquelin in a BWM role and I was pleasantly surprised too, yes he goes to close the ball down at times but he doesn't run off senselessly as I was expecting him to, it's like your screenshots show, he tends to pick the right occasions for closing down or standing off.
I managed to pick Kranevitter up in the January window in my Arsenal save for 8.75m on a "Backup" contract for 60k/w. He stepped in when Coquelin got injured for 3 months, I haven't stopped smiling since because he's just so damn reliable Quality player.

I'm definitely not Cleon, but surely that role is far too static for someone like Bergkamp?Cleon, what do you think about "enganche" role for "Bergkamp position"?0 -
Thankfully for your sake, its YOUR Man Utd in the 2nd season rather than Van Gaal's Utd this season Otherwise you might battle to score! All jokes aside, I'd be really interested to see what you've developed and how closely the style resembles the Invincibles.but I'd argue my current Man United squad (going into 2nd season)0 -
So I would say that not a few teams but more accurately Pep Guardiola is the exception to the rule regarding width and possession.
I wanted to mention this, that is clearly a Guardiola Barca, so essentially, it's Pep Guardiola that plays wide rather than Barcelona, under Enrique, I dont think they play nearly as wide. Also, people would do well to remember the level of player that Guardiola has had available to him to carry out his vision.

Close Down More TI, then??
No, I dont think so. But that's just my opinion of Arsenal under Wenger in general. What I mean is that to me it seems that Arsenal look to defend as a compact unit rather than pressing their opponents in a man to man or 2 man press. You might see Giroud or Ozil look to press the backline after losing the ball, but once the ball passes them, then the midfield looks to hold their shape rather than to press as much as Ozil or Giroud.
In FM terms, perhaps the real life Arsenal would have the front 2 close down more, but I think that they would have default closing down as a team.

3 - If you watch the games back from this period, Arsenal were quite passive and only aggressive with the ball. They held positions and dropped deep to defend in numbers rather than hassle teams to win the ball back.
I think this has always been a feature of Wenger's sides, this is not to say that they dont press at times, because they do. I do however think that Wenger prefers his teams to be really compact in defense, the press usually comes from the players higher up the pitch rather than the defense. Or is more of a team press, but I definitely think he prefers the team to maintain their shape when defending, rather than leave gaps through pressing.

I started writing about Man Utd at first with Yorke and Cole but it felt wrong, as I had unfinished business with the Invincibles. Hopefully people like what I've done so far
Hi Cleon, glad that you decided to "finish your business" here first! Would you still consider writing about that United side? I'm sure it would be just as good an article.

If people are going to be suspicious and accuse me of things then I can gladly walk away from contributing. It would be easier for me, I have no need to write or try and help other peoples. Posts like yours always make me question why I try and help others when I don't have to. I mean, I give up hours and hours of my free time to write stuff that I get no benefit from. Seems stupid doesn't it?! It's not my loss if I stop writing FM stuff.
Oh please for the love of all that is sacred....NO!!!!! Pay no mind to stuff like this mate. There are countless people that benefit enormously from this.

Congratulations herne, I've followed this thread in the background from the beginning and it's quality!Cleon has very kindly asked if he can serialise this write up on his own blog, which you can find here http://sisportscentre.com/.There is a wealth of information and interesting articles contained within written by Cleon and other writers, so if you haven't already found it, go take a look .
Thanks Cleon.

Thanks Cleon
I have Grealish, Gil, Traore & Sinclar who are all more suited to playing in the AMR/AML positions, although they are blessed with the pace to suit Counter Attacking football. Will be interesting to see how they perform.
I'm playing Alexis Sanchez and Theo Walcott as my ML/MR, neither of them have high ratings for the position according to my assistant, but more importantly, both of them have the attributes required to play there just fine. Both get forward when they need to. I think people are too hesitant to drop the AML/AMR to the ML/MR strata because they think that the player is "unsuited" for the position. You'll get a much more defensively sound tactic with just that change of dropping wingers to the midfield instead of AM strata without losing any of the advantages in my opinion.

I really didn't expect the RPM to contribute so much defensively. I might have to incorporate one into a save somewhere.
Congrats on becoming a Squawka contributor!

Between this and Cleon's Invincibles thread, I have an overwhelming urge to go and make a 4-4-2, I usually prefer 4-2-3-1 or 4-1-2-2-1. Just had a lot of fun getting an extremely attacking 4-3-1-2 going and really enjoyed the 2 forward combo. Maybe it's time to go and whack up a simple 4-4-2. Thanks to you and Cleon for the inspiration!

Hey Herne79, I really enjoyed reading this. Well constructed thought process and really good at articulating what you are trying to achieve. Contrary to some of the others here, I'm really happy that you decided to go from your original 4-4-2 to the slightly different formation with the TQ in the AMCR slot. To me it shows that you're trying to get the team to play in the style which you set out in the beginning rather than try to get the DLF role to work, which then messes up your whole system. Basically I guess I'm saying, well done for staying true to the system YOU want to implement. Some really good tactical observations made too.
I look forward to following this thread in future as there is some really good food for thought and I like your simplistic way of looking at things! Really top job mate.

Methinks you need to be more patient mate, it feels to me like you dont ever give time to adapt/settle.

@cleon
It's one based on Arsenal Invincibles. And I might post about it on my blog but don't think I'll post it here. As for the instructions, roles or mentality I used, if I go into that now then people will have questions about it etc. And that's something I'm trying to avoid for now and the reason I've not posted about it anywhere yet. Time for a little break from answering questions and just enjoy playing the game for a while for me I thinkI can't seem to find that old Arsenal Invincibles article on your blog Cleon, did you remove it?

I think it's important to remember that they didn't prioritise this, if the opportunity was there to dribble forward they would, but it is not something that defined this side. I think that what truly defined this team was their unwavering confidence in each others ability to do what the team required them to do at that particular moment. Whether that was a longer ball from the defenders, Pires or Henry dribbling or just excellent passing and movement in general.
