  1. Yea as it stands the 16 groups of 3 is the decision and that is what the bids and stadium decision is based on. Originally FIFA didn't dare to go for a much bigger/longer WC as that wouldn't be popular with clubs and a large portion of the fans. But everyone knows that 3 team groups are pretty **** and thus there is now a will to change it. Not sure FIFA will want to have another WC where they change a lot of factors after the fact as happened with moving this WC to winter and such. Will be interesting to see where it ends up. I think that the one thing we all can agree on is that the FIFA Council are idiots for putting themselves in a position where things has to be fixed this late in the process.

  3. Quite difficult but ended up with: mark winning due to Lukaku and Minamino being too crap to be threat. Owl winning due to not having half a line-up being too old to perform.
  4. Agreed. But as I had to pick a winner I decided that giving Xhaka defensive instructions is a bad idea so I gave the win to Golden Boy.

  7. I expect some "big" team to mess up but I wouldn't be surprised if it's 8 out of 8 tbh. The one that is a close match is Portugal v Switzerland, the rest shouldn't be. But of course England can be England and make a mess of it. And Netherlands of today isn't as strong as one expects Netherlands to be. Japan could use the momentum to overwhelm Croatia. And Spain needs to rev back up after ditching the Japan game. But that's just a lot of "but"s, I voted for 7.
  8. That has been a suggestion but there haven't been an official decision on it (or the competitions format at all) yet.

  10. Yea the current handling laws do have some issues. I was quite surprised that the referee didn't tell the VAR to feck off tbh. No no no. The only time handling is a red card is if it is a DOGSO situation.
  11. One of the options they had (instead of the 48 team/3team groups) was to make it 40 teams and have 8 groups of 5. Would have meant 88 games (instead of 80). But predictably they went for more teams and a ****** format instead. Got to get those votes you know.
  12. Nah they did decide on 3-team groups at the same time as they decided on it being 48 teams. It was one of several options of #teams and system they choose between. It has been reported that some on the Exec board are looking to change that but afaik there have been no official FIFA statement about it. There is still time though as they still haven't decided on the specifics of the qualification competitions.
  13. Ask the Italians if they think h2h is better. h2h can be good if there is only two teams involved. When there is three teams then full group results is much better.
  14. Yea it is basically just moving the intercontinental qualifying step to be doe at the WC instead of ahead of it. Few games with not all teams being involved in the last matchday is a just an invitation for trouble.
  15. Of course there is a drop, you're adding 16 teams to the mix and the drop in quality in AFC and OFC is quite drastic and both CAF and CONCACAF have a lot of teams that varies wildly in quality from year to year. That said I have to say that the groups you got was a lot better than I expected. Not that it will make me think 48 teams and 3 team groups is in any way a good change.
  16. Yea just the same as the one the other day, the AR on the pitch has gotten them right without VAR. That said I think the interference part here was more difficult to be sure of for the referee though.
  17. Yea and I understand your POW, even if I don't agree. But trying to pass it off as fact when the rules say otherwise is still crap, especially when you know it.
  18. Exactly right. VAR can only decide on the objective part, offside or not. The subjective part, interfering or not, has to go to the referee on the pitch. Any commentator that hasn't understood that simple distinction by now really shouldn't be allowed into a studio/stadium.
  19. Not that simple. It's being so close to the keeper that does it. Had he done the same thing but at the back post while the keeper was a the near post then touching it or not would have been the decider. But here he affects the keeper and then it's an offence no matter if he touches it or not.
