  1. Really enjoying my Newcastle save at the moment. Cruised to the title in the first season, playing a 4-4-2 with a DM/CM combo, two wide midfielders and two false nines in the AMC position. Ended up with 103 points, after a rocky start when the formation was bedding in. Gayle was played out of position, but was a decent enough goalscorer and finished top scorer, with Ayoze just behind. Atsu was an absolute beast, as was Puncheon when he came in during the January transfer window. Diame and Anita bossed the midfield, with Zekhnini showing real promise for development, likewise Armstrong when he came back from loan. Won the first three games of the return to the top flight, using the same system; albeit with refreshed personnel to reflect the larger challenge. You seem to get given an absolute fortune by the board upon promotion, which is a bonus - especially with all of the returning players from loan. 15/16 Transfers Out (windows one & two): Sels (£2m) Dummett (£2m) Tiote (£7m) Gouffran (£1m) Murphy (loan) Hanley (loan) Haidara (loan) Satka (loan) Woodman (loan) Mitrovic (loan) 15/16 Transfers In (windows one & two): Tagliafico (£2m) Zekhnini (£3m) Puncheon (£2m) Armstrong (recalled from loan in Jan) 16/17 Transfers Out (window one) Elliot (£1m) Darlow (£1m) Krul (£2m) Yedlin (£7.5m) Clark (£3.5m) Laschelles (£12m) Hanley (£5m) Hayden (£2.5m) Mbabu (£3.5m) Thauvin (as per deal) Anita (£7m) Ritchie (£11m) Colback (£3m) Saivet (£5m) Ameobi (£500k) Mitrovic (£8m) Riviere (£2m) Gayle (£12m) 16/17 Transfers In (window one) Ings (£6m) Kovacic (£13m) Butland (£19m) Vida (£10m) Veltman (£8m) Durm (£3.5m) Elneny (£5m) Lucas Silva (£3m) Atsu (£5m - as per loan agreement) Ben Arfa (loan) Regens x3 (£5m in total) Still got a stack of money to spend, given the sales and the board's initial budget but I'm waiting to see how the team beds in first. Current first team squad is: GK: Butland (Woodman/Regen) DR: Durm (Gamez) DL: Tagliafico (Lazaar) DC: Veltman & Vida (Mbemba/Regen) DM: Elneny (Silva) MC: Kovacic (Diame/Shelvey) MR: Ben Arfa (Puncheon) ML: Atsu (Zekhnini/Aarons) AMC: Ayoze & De Jong (Ings/Armstrong)
  2. Always enjoy a Spurs game in previous versions, so finally started one at the weekend and thought I'd do a quick brain dump on where I'm at and get any thoughts for the January transfer window... Playing various tweaks on a 4-2-3-1 formation (depending on opposition) which I think seems to bring the best out of the players available at the start of the game. Sometimes drop the 2 CMs to 2 DMs, depending on the opposition. Decided I didn't want to buy any players over the age of 24, to build a team for future. Outs: Dembele - £7m (wasn't the right player for my system) Adebayor - £5m (wages were enormous and wasn't likely to play) Soldado - £10m (see above) Vertonghen - £35m (United came in with an offer and I negotiated it up to £35m - couldn't turn down as it is a lot for 3.5* player) Rose - £7m (crossing stats not good enough and wanted a better first choice LB than him or Davies) Chadli - £12m (always had plenty of joy with Munir & Ayew at AML, so wanted them instead) Paulinho - £8m (wanted Romero instead) Capoue - £9m (overload of CM/DM options) Kaboul - £3m (thought I'd get more money, but got seriously annoyed at being listed so ended up taking a low offer) = £96m Ins: Mitrovic - £15m (Soldado replacement, enormous potential) Fierro - £4m (bit physically lightweight at the start, but has wonderful potential) Balanta - £11m (Vertonghen replacement) Marquinhos - £3.5m (4* potential, listed by PSG remarkably) Digne - £3m (again 4* potential and listed by PSG) Romero - £8m (think a rotation of him, Bentaleb and Mason will make a really solid midfield platform for the four creative players further up the pitch) Ayew - £4.5m (was an absolute hero for me in my last Everton save and ended up going to Bayern for £40m) Rafinha - loan (backup for Eriksen, whilst Onomah gets up to speed) Samper - loan (for when I drop to two DMs) Munir - loan (quality IF backup at AML for Ayew) = £49m (+ loans) Needs DR - With Walker out for 5 months, Walker-Peters still too raw, and Yedlin not being good enough, I definitely need a right back. I'm playing Marquinhos or Dier there at the moment, but my formation ideally needs someone defensively solid but with strong crossing ability.Any suggestions would be great. As you can see from the ins/outs, I've still got quite a bit of money to spend. At the moment, the side is: GK: Lloris/Vorm/Friedel DR: Marquinhos/Dier/ DL: Digne/Davies 2 x DC: Chiriches/Balanta/Marquinhos/Fazio/Dier 2 x MC: Romero/Bentaleb/Mason AMR: Lamela/Townsend AMC: Eriksen/Rafinha AML: Ayew/Munir ST: Kane/Mitrovic/Fierro Played the first couple of games of the PL season and have won 3-0 in both, but obviously there's a long way to go. If I can get the RB situation sorted, I'll be in a decent place ahead of January (fingers crossed).
  3. Progress: I've hit March in my first season and I'm second in the league (equal points with Liverpool in first - who says this game's unrealistic?!). With the right tactics and a little bit of wheeling and dealing, this is such an amazing squad. That said, I have been really lucky with injuries. If I can keep everyone fit, the title isn't beyound the realm of possibility, but I've got 12 points on 5th so I should be able to hang on for Champions League. I made it to the quarter finals of the FA Cup but bombed out of the League Cup. Staff: Variable and some need ditching, but the club is big enough to attract the really good free coaches out there like Meulensteen, Neri, etc... Tactics: I vary between 4-2-3-1 (with a trequartista or advanced playmaker, depending on who's fit) at home, and a 4-1-2-2-1 away from home - with a half back and a roaming playmaker to ensure good ball retention. Transfers Out: Naismith - £10m (fitted perfectly into my home system, but brought Munir in on loan and Odegaard permanentnly - plus Barkley and Osman, so felt I didn't desperately need him) Distin - £500k (high wages and mid 30s, absolute no-brainer) Alcaraz - £1m (just a liability - again, an absolute no brainer) Gibson - £5m (had other options and wanted to buy Romero) Oviedo - £7m (went in January, as he wanted first team football) Eto'o - £1m (went in January, as he wanted first team football and his wages are huge for us) McGeady - £6.5m (went in January, as I didn't need him) Transfers In: Romero - £7m Balanta - £7m Munir - loan Van Der Wiel - loan Joel Campbell - loan Bernard - £17m Odegaard - £1m Elderson Echiéjilé - loan Players: GK - Howard has been incredible, with Robles as more than solid back-up DR - Coleman has been brilliant, with Van Der Wiel really good back-up whilst he was around. Now it's down to Hibbo if Coleman needs a rest... DL - Baines has been a beast, with Oviedo initially providing good back-up before wanting to leave. Echiéjilé has been solid enough as rotation so far. DC - Jags, Stones and Balanta have all been brilliant and have all stayed fit thankfully. Have rotated between the three of them with no weak links. DM - Romero, Barry and Besic have played at half back for me really well. MC - McCarthy has been my mainstay for MC, although all of the above have played there too; along with Osman. Managed to give Ledson about 10 games too, to help his development MC - Barkley took a while to get back up and running after his injury, but he's been amazing as a roaming playmaker. Romero and Osman too. Given Odegaard a few games here since January. AMR - Mirallas and Joel Campbell have been incredible. Mirallas got a bad knock for a few months, but Campbell held the fort down, with McGeady and Kone playing a bit too. AMC - Munir has been incredible as a trequartista, scoring 15 and creating several too. Barkley plays well as an advanced playmaker too, obviously. AML - Bernard has started well, with Atsu doing a brilliant job for most of the season. Pienaar has done well since returning from injury, with McGeady before Xmas. ST - Lukaku started weakly but has hit his straps since Xmas. Munir has been a beast when played up top, but the biggest suprise for me has been Kone who has been amazing when played. The board have said they're keeping 30% of future transfer fees to manage debt levels, which isn't great. Looks like I'll be relying on loans again, when Atsu, Munir, Campbell and Echiéjilé go back. Not sure how much longer Pienaar and Osman will go on either. Will definitely need a young centre half, covering left back, covering AMR and covering AMC over the summer. Got Bakkali coming in on a free transfer which should cover Atsu's departure. In terms of young prospects, I think Odegaard can step up next season and I'll continue easing Ledson in. Kenny has been out on loan and I'm hoping he might be ok as a covering RB. There's an amazing new CM who has come in amongst the new regens; who could keep Ledson on his toes.
  4. Been away from FM for a while and started again last night, with a new Everton game. Here's my early progress: Brought in a few new backroom staff members to get myself up to 4* training as a minimum across the board and to ensure the young talent in the squad can really develop. On the transfers front: Baines was being whiny and City offered £23m for him, which I reluctantly accepted. On the positive front, his departure allowed me to bring in Kolarov for £6m as they put him in the U21s. Given my tactic relies on wing backs, Kolarov's attacking abilities - combined with his set piece skills - made him a perfect replacement for Baines. I decided to shift Heitinga as his wages didn't warrant his role in the squad. Managed to get £2.5m for him thankfully. Jelavic fell under the same category, with Stoke being willing to pay £5m for him. I shipped Naismith out for £4m and got £200k for Hibbo - much as I love him, he was never going to play. Finally, I ditched Duffy for £800k and Vellios for the same amount. The money I had left has so far gone on Damiao (£5m), Balanta (£8m) & Revelliere (free). I tried to get Honda, but he went for AC Milan alas. Outs: Hibbert (£200k) Heitinga (£2.5m) Duffy (£800k) Vellios (£800k) Baines (£23m) Jelavic (£5m) Naismith (£4m) TOTAL: £36.3m Ins: Revelliere (free) Balanta (£8m) Damiao (£5m) Kolarov (£6m) TOTAL: £19m My squad at the moment is: GK: Howard/Joel DR: Coleman/Revelliere DC(x2): Jagielka/Balanta/Distin/Stones/Alcaraz DL: Kolarov/Oviedo MC(x2): Barry/Gibson/McCarthy/Ledson AMR: Mirallas/Deulofeu AMC: Barkley/Osman AML: Pienaar/Gueye ST: Lukaku/Damiao/Kone In terms of development; I've got Revelliere tutoring Kenny, Osman tutoring Lundstrom, Barry tutoring Ledson and Pienaar tutoring Green. Clearly the squad is thin and I'll be looking to use the remaining money I've got for another couple of players. Think I need a good prospect for the future at AML (to take over from Pienaar) and a more immediate solution at AMC (to give Barkley some time to develop). Will read through the thread now to see if anyone's had any particular success in those positions, but suggetsions are welcome!
  5. How do you guys get the best out of Javi Martinez? My tactic has two MCs (one slightly defensive, one offensive) and a DMC. Ideally I'd like him at DMC, but I'd really appreciate your thoughts if possible.
  6. Hi Guys Started an Everton game last night, and boy is it tough?! Here's what I did: 1) Restructured the backroom staff to ensure that the coaches are good enough to get the best out of the youngsters at the club and those I hope to bring in over time (if Kenwright ever gives me any money!). 2) Sold a bunch of players outside the core of the side to give me some money to address the weak areas of the side. Got rid of: - Baxter (£1.7m) - Anichebe (£2m) - Bilyaletdinov (£4m) - Hibbert (£500k loan, plus £1m future fee (and full wages)) - Mucha (£1.5m) - Hope (£800K) - Wallace (£250K) 3) Started to bring some players in! So far I've got: - Diogo (free) - Wilifred (£2.5m) - Kranjcar (£1m loan, £4m future) That leaves me with about £6.5m after the players and staff I've brought in so far. I could really do with getting a back-up LB to cover Baines and a decent AMR to rotate with Osman. Starting team will look a bit like: GK: Howard DR: Diogo DL: Baines DC: Jagielka DC: Heitinga DMC: Fellaini MC: Rodwell MC: Cahill AMR: Osman AML: Drenthe FC: Wilifred Subs: Hahnemann, Neville, Coleman, Distin, Barkley, Kranjcar, Saha Pretty paper thin squad so hope I don't get too many injuries! Any thoughts or suggestions would be great anyway. c
