  1. I was loving this.   Despite playing FM for 20 years, I was far too late to the personality bandwagon.  But I went Perso-crazy during FM17.   My favourite save was a network game with my friend, in a European Super League.  I managed to get Partizan to be 5 time champions due to abusing making the most the tutoring system.

FM20 however, has been very different.  I've struggled to try and bring those same tutoring philosophies over.  Signing mentors hasn't given me much joy (looks like General Squad Personality might be the most important factor?).   But reading this has given me lots of food for thought.

Although sadly it seemed to die just as it was getting to the next stage :(

Either way, thank you.  It was a great read and very educational.  Thanks @That There Phil :applause:

I think this was base on Lisa's Redbull so you can have 2 choice of which verison you want to play with .

I've been using this for four* matches, changed mid season, starting from the red arrow.

*Ignore the stupid Feb friendly, but zero goals conceded in four games having previously conceding 13 in 7 is very welcome.

    Thank you!

What I have found over the years is that tactics made with say Newcastle are seldom make good universal tactics, but those created using top clubs are more universal

The results I see from Rober tend to indicate these  Lpool tactics work for underdogs suc,h as Sheffield Utd winning PL.

Yeah, I understand that you don't want a tactic to be pigeon holed to a specific set of players and/or skills - which are not transferable from say Newcastle to Watford.

But if the purpose is to make a tactic which performs best vs the ME and you have a players like Salah that can play very well at seemingly any advanced role, at what point does he and others like him 'break' the tactic's universal capabilities?

    So, quickly looking through the tactics posted above;

    Holy Ghost Fire asymmetric:

Salah playing as pressing forward to the right; 54 goals, 7 assists.

    Holy Ghost Fire 4-2-3-1:

Salah Playing as right winger attack; 30 goals, 41 assists.

    Kashmir RMD;

Salah playing as right RMD attack; 26 goals, 35 assists.

If it doesn't matter where someone like Salah plays and you will still get 61+ direct goal contributions, doesn't that discredit the tactical set up/positions/roles as that player is overwhelmingly good?   Outside of maybe 3/4 teams, you're not going to have a player this good and be able to carry you to 61+ goals.   Surley to make it universal and transferable you need to know the positions/roles still work with lesser commodities?

Also I see VVD has got 16+ goals in each of those tactics.  I'm not saying that set pieces aren't a part of the game or part of a tactic, but that level of, dare I say exploit, it again harms the true ability of the tactic as a stand alone weapon against the ME?

Don't we want the tactic to be the best, first and foremost, and then add the META/OP/exploit options on top to essentially supersize it? Rather than bloat the tactic with META/OP/exploit options so that we don't know the true value of the tactic in the first place?

-Again, I apologise if I'm speaking out of turn or appear to be rude, passive aggressive or what have you.  I love the game and I want to improve my own learning and interactions within it.  And that can only be done by understanding the raw data and the processes.  I have used a number of your tactics this season, and for that I am grateful, sadly I haven't been able to stick with any of them long term as the results are not nearly as good as with the Liverpool SS.  I've found it hard to get 16 goals out a forward let alone a centreback.

i posted tactic you can download. about formation, to be honest, i don't know. i ALWAYS play with 4-4-2 no matter what. it's my favorite formation :)

I think the routine needs to be saved as part of the tactic.  The game doesn't pick up stand alone routines... unless I'm doing something very wrong?!

Knap has shown that they work for likes of spurs and Celtic so it's not just pool, they just tend to be his go to team.

I'm struggling for time to play FM on full mode, has anyone used these tactics on touch? Been reading up on touch and seems like it might fit better for me at the minute

I'm not having a go at Knap, it's just so many of these tactics are now same-same but different, it's as though almost any tactic could be used with Liverpool and get results.  In most screenshots Salah is smashing goals and assists, regardless of his position.   I understand you don't want there to be too many variables (ie changing teams too often), but at what point do you accept that almost any tactic will probably work with Liverpool, and therefore it's probably not a good basis for tactical creation?

If this is not the place for hypothetical discussions then I apologise and will leave it alone.

Might i suggest this one, should be fairly close but with a DM. Wingers and crossing work excellent.1979257039_!!!!FM20.4.1FireandWater23212P104EC.fmf

    2-0 vs Leicester (18th), 5-1 @ Brentford (12th) & 5-1 vs Fulham (17th).

Much more coherent play so far even with the tactic only at around 66-75% familiarity.  Thank you, might have saved the season! :-D

Second season with this tactic, first season I switched too late and lost in the playoffs.  Made some shrewd signings and some excellent loans (Kean, Campana, Alvarez, Roberts, Jones).

    Thanks Knap

I'm struggling 3rd season, now in the prem.  Got spanked 10-2 by Spurs first game, and have been really up and down since:

    image.thumb.png.3fb24a7cc82c97b15b0c151c7bf04cbc.png

We struggled vs Newcastle in a 0-1, then were delightful vs Chelsea in a 4-2 (was 4-0 until 85th or something).  We had much more/better stats vs Saints, 4ccc vs 1 or something and then I sent the reserves out i the EFL.

I find the wingers are almost useless in games.   They rarely attempt crosses, and when they do they usually just blast the ball into the defender which often rebounds perfectly all the back to the opposition forward his is offside and they score, because well, the AI rarely misses a 1-vs-1.

I am not too disheartened as we brought in essentially a new starting XI except the GK, who is not up to prem standard, but the wild inconsistency is the issue for me.  I wouldn't be happy to lose each game 1-0, 2-0, 2-1, but when you can put performances together one week and then are just abysmal the next week. I am worried that unless the forwards are OP for the division (as Kean & Campana were in the Championship) that the tactic maybe isn't strong enough to maintain a positive PPG %.

I don't want to get into the spiral of trying to chase results with minor tactical tweaks and changes, and I've moulded the team around these positions, so my options are few at the moment.

IMO there seems to be major weaknesses in the midfield, and it was also true while smashing teams in the Champ, except there it was perhaps covered up by two OP forwards and some really good loan signings.  In the prem, we are often outclassed by very average teams (WBA, Newcastle, Southampton etc).

    image.thumb.png.c223c088538103c12e11118fcd44ec51.png

I am wary attempting to learn a new tactic midseason, but I think I will look to see if there is one which will suit the players available better.

Ok so seriously ready to uninstall this game now. Not sure how everyone seems to be having success with any tactic. I just dont seem to be getting any success?

I admit, im more of a plug and play tactic using guy. I dont have time to fiddle about with training, let me AM do that. Should I give these tactics a few matches to settle in, espeially if ive signed a few new players? Should i change from Attacking to Positive?

I;m currently AC Milan, about to go back to the 451 on here. Just at a loss as to what im doing wrong.

Personally I would say most of these tactics are going to work.  BUT... you will need to give it some time, when you select your first choice XI, what does the familiarity bar say at the top of the tactics screen?  Are your players a good fit for the formation/tactic you wish to use, I don't just mean Player A can play as an ML winger (for example), does he have the necessary attributes to be successful vs traditionally defensive and tactical league like Serie A.

Also, bear in mind, I think a lot of people here use instant results rather than playing matches, games don't seem to play out in the same way doing that.

Good luck, be patient and remember, with FM, often the more you put in, the more you get out.

  9. Hey guys n gals!

Some friends and I are going to start a fantasy draft game.  I've had a search on tinterweb, but can't find much out there in the way of information, strategies etc etc.

    1. Is there anyway to download or copy into a spreadsheet the player values?

    2. Does anyone have any strategies?  (I am working under the assumption of having a good tactic and getting players to fit that tactic. But ideas how to split the budget, is a Ronaldo 99m [one 5th of budget] worth it over XI 30-40m guys, etc etc)

    3. Does anyone know some super bargain players (example, FM17 Aljeandro Gomes' reputation was wrong so he was insanely cheap, like 70k? I think)

Thanks in advance, I'm sure you'll appreciate the need of getting one over on my mates :-D so any and all hints, tips, advice is very welcome!!

The Hoffe are indeed still bossing the Budesliga and we're on our way to securing the third CL trophy in a row.  The system is pretty much the same although it's evolved due to having better players.  I don't want o hijack the thread too much as it's going into a new direction, and perhaps I should start my own humble little thread, but with teams now starting to treat us as one of the big boys in the league, we've had to attack more, which ironically is starting to happen with reducing mentality and pulling back the wide men in order to make more of a 541 when defending, and morphing into a 343 in attack.  Using the inverted wingback has also been a bit of revelation, particularly when attacking as it allows for one of my cm's to bomb forward and seems to really put the AI (who obviously didn't get the new patch yet), in a bit of confusion.

The system is still very solid, with focus on defense above all - apart from a blip when we went a bit braindead in defense having wrapped up the title already, we don't allow more than 25 goals in a season,  and it certainly fares better in the CL where teams have more quality and are more willing to attack.  The most difficult types of opponents are aggressive and defensive teams which are happy to sit back and break knees when defending and go direct when attacking.

I'd give a lot of credit to Rashidi for his videos and helping me understand the effects of changing shape.  In this type of system, it is very important because of its reliance of overloads in particular areas, depending on opponent and personnel (of course). Having a Kante is never going to be the same as having a Krenvitter, just as a Costa gives you something different from a Kramaric:brock:.   I'll start a humble thread and let this one Conte on...

Edit:  Sorry, horribly written and sounded like a drunken ramble.

So I was playing as HSV, and just couldn't score, after a fairly ok 1-0, 1-1, 1-1, 1-1, we went on to lose 0-1, 0-1, 0-1... I had to abandon the tactic as it just wasn't working.  I couldn't get consistent play from the MCs or AMs.   At times the first half of the game would disappear with 50-60% possession, but no shots or even highlights of build up.   I really want to use this tactic, and without giving into to three strikers or three SSs, but the AMs are so remote, and the MCs are either too deep or so far apart that it struggles to produce a working fluidity.  After not scoring for three, I ended up crumbling and resorted to a counter 4-2-3-1 formation which produced some goals, but we'd concede more.  Then a 4-1-2-2-1 IFs which did the same, except we couldn't score.   The board gave me a month, but 3 defeats and a draw later I resigned.

FM17 is kicking my arse right now, and I can't think how to save myself!  welp.

  11. Thank goodness I'm not alone.   I'll try and have a play around when I am at home later, I think I'll attempt varying concepts like a out and out attacking winger? Perhaps I'll make a hideous asymetircal change and move AML -> AMCL and make him a treq or something.   I definitely need to find a way to get the midfield working better too.   Or perhaps pushing the MCL forward but with a very supporting role, even dropping back, would push the AML further forward... I love thinking out loud.

  12. For the life of me I can't create goals, and can't get Hazard to function as a AML IF(a).   If I can't get Hazard to score/assist/be involved how will it work somewhere else.

Edit:  Sorry, I realise that statement isn't helpful to anyone.   From observing the match engine, I think the problem is, that Hazard (AML IF(a)) is lining up next to the opposition FB.   He doesn't get behind and when he cuts in, he basically runs in front of their back line.   This usually results in the ball being played back to the always too deep MCs, or he shoots wildly to the right.   Thinking out loud, perhaps where I have Costa playing DLF(s) he is not pushing/pulling the D-line so that Hazard can find space.   Another note on the IF play, if he gets the ball deep, he cuts in straight away, which just means he's running into trouble - any ideas how to stop this?  Perhaps do I need to make AML a uber attacking winger instead?   BTW; I'm not seeking immaculate recreation here, just a functioning attractive football 3-4-3.

  13. Defensively, I've got it working well, although Kante comes very deep as MC(d) and Fabregas really closes a lot even his PI is to rarely close and then they end up chasing the same player.

But in attack we're struggling, two goals is a serious endeavour.  The team are creating chances, and good chances, but the play in general seems really laboured and not as lethal as the fairly attractive football we're playing.

  14. @Contexx Just wanted to say great reading your opinions on here.  I've yet to get fully engrossed in FM17, but will definitely take your points on board.   How have you done with the 3-4-3? Are Hoffenheim still bossing the Bundesliga?

I'd like to say a general thanks, as there's been some real good info in this thread, I hope it keeps going!

I too am trying to jump on the 3-4-3 bandwagon.  Despite a lot of fun with three striker formations in FM15 (skipped FM16), I need some soul to my football and tactics.   I'm not dead set on perfecting the Conte system, I just want enjoyable football with good results.  So far in my attempts the AML/R have been isolated and fairly absent throughout matches.  Furthermore the gulf in which the MCs randomly run around the middle of the park doing very little has my team completely inept.

Has anyone got updates on their saves/tactics?  Anyone solved the AML/R problem(s)?
