Fantastic series @Cleon, as always! Two questions if I may, firstly regarding the sweeper keeper.

    • Do you see him make risky line breaking passess when under pressure? Would you expect progressive passes from him like from the Ball playing CBs?
    • My other question would be about the 4-3-3 variants. I can see that behind the striker you mostly have two aggressive wingers, be it IW or IF, os a SS. I am trying to set up a 4-1-4-1 but struggling because I want to implement a wide playmaker but seem to be completely nullified when pressed deep - even against inferior teams . Do you think it is necessary to always use two aggessive attackers from the wing in a 4-3-3? Seems to me like modern tactics both in real life and in FM rely on players being high and wide and having midfielders and fullbacks running beyond them which I struggle to achieve because the players end up limiting each other's space with a WP.

Just an example of something I’ve done before the WP was an available role - in FM17, I moved my Arsenal to a 4-3-3 to try and get the best out of Ramsey and Ozil - played Ozil as an AP(s) on the right wing with Ramsey a CM(a) at MRC and Bellerin a CWB(a) - had Ozil sat narrower too so he had Ramsey underlapping and Bellerin overlapping.

    Hey guys,

I'm using Arsenal to recreate Arteta's tactics, in your standard 4-3-3, except I'm using Martinelli as an IF(A) with sit narrower instruction instead of having him hold the width as Arteta does IRL.

Behind him is Zinchenko who I'm using in the IWB(S) role that was pretty much built for him, so my problem at the moment is how do I ensure there's someone to maintain width on the LHS?

The solution would of course be the LCM, which is currently occupied by Havertz in the MEZ(S) role, on an instruction to run wider with the ball. It's been *okay* so far, but doesn't quite achieve the width-holding rotations I'm going for, is this the best solution in the game or are there other tweaks I can employ? Would keeping Martinelli as an IF with a stay wider instruction be best?

Any and all advice much appreciated!

In what way has it been "okay"? If the team is playing well, that counts for more than if an individual is getting good ratings, goals and assists.

Interested to get thoughts on a tactic i've created and currently testing with Chelsea. I'm trying to create a cross of Gegenpress and possession tactic where the lone striker scores most of the goals with the AML and AMR chipping in.

    Thoughts and ideas welcomed.

I'd swap Fernandez and Nkunku's roles and duties around - should dovetail better with the wide players they're next to.

  4. I've tried looking at where to log as a bug, but I cannot actually find where to start a new topic... but an issue I've reported for FM23 as well, when I put in real fixtures the start date disappears and I cannot actually start the game with real fixtures. It is a real disappointment that this hasn't been fixed in over 12 months, as a hangover issue from FM23. It's a big touch of the realism thing for me, so a real shame.

  5. So I play a possession style normally, and I don’t change that. I slow the pace down, waste time, play for set pieces, drop mentality - I do want to keep the ball because otherwise I’m turning it over to them.

What is your squad concentration, and stamina like?

If you do sit off later on, maybe a change of shape - bring on an extra centre back and go to a 5, might help you to deal with those crosses and get numbers.

I don’t really want to dive too deep into that discussion about the purpose of possession, but I just want to add, that the purpose doesn’t always have to contain creating lots of chances and scoring goals. The purpose could also be to simply defend with the ball and or / rest your players by not giving the ball to the opposition. That’s a common approach under certain circumstances.

I think game state plays a part in this - if you're 2-up and looking to kill the game with 20 minutes to go, sure it's pretty smart to just pass it around at a low tempo and drag the opponents out. If you're 0-1 down, it makes a lot less sense...

Are there any recommended rules for balancing support/attack duties throughout the team? Such as a fullback on support with the IW on attack ahead?

Or that the Mez on attack should be on same flank as the IW on attack?

I wrote about that in my Pairs & Combinations guide - things to give an idea to get some partnerships that work, but still lots of nuance and context to it

Yeah, I've seen messages about that since, IIama. Leagues disappear when you go to start a new save if you include the data.

I didn't do anything abnormal. I used the fixture generator for it so had to add the final fixture, as usual. And I chose some new dates and times for the premier league fixtures missed earlier in the season. But that was all.

Maybe I'll try choosing new dates in notepad instead, rather than changing them once I get to the editor. See if that helps. Done La Liga, Bundesliga, Serie A, Ligue 1 etc. without a problem.

    Thanks.

I’ve never used fixture generator, so probably not the person to help there, sorry

Can I ask how you got around this issue/if you know what I did wrong, IIama3?

Firstly, there's a bug stopping it working properly...

    I don't know what you did/changed, but I didn't get a message like that...
