  1. @Jaynm: Hamsik's an expensive option, and he hasn't exactly been setting the world alight in his first season with me (my 2nd at PSG); Marvin Martin's been doing a far better job. It might be worth noting that in my experience Hamsik plays best when made playmaker in the team instructions, but I'm choosing Pastore at AMC for that role at the moment.
  2. Finally got the time to update the thread on my first season's performance. We won every competition we entered, pipping CSKA Moscow on penalties in the Europa League and beating Lyon on pens as well after a nil-nil draw in the French Cup final. We finished 20 points clear of Lyon in the league, and earlier beat Sochaux 2-1 in the League cup final. Stand out performers continued to be Gameiro, Willian and Pastore, which meant my decision to bring in Anelka, Saviola, Sanogo and Fierro was something of a mistake as there's now way too much competition for the lone striker I employ, especially with Moussa Sow also performing well. In close season I signed Marek Hamsik as competition for Marvin Martin in CM, and also splashed out on Subotic. The only signing French players thing was fun for a bit, but I saw these two players as suitable for breaking that rule for! I also brought in M'Bengue for 10M from Ajax, and Kaboul on loan, but don't think I'll be signing him permanently. We've just finished the winter break, and are 6 points clear of OM, and 8 points clear of Lyon in the league, and into the knockout stage of the Champions' League. We're still in all the competitions we entered, which means this mights be an even better season than last year. As expected, Anelka, Sanogo, Wilfried and Saviola are unhappy due to a lack of game time, but the last has been very helpful in tutoring Fierro so maybe it wasn't such a bad choice to sign them after all. I hope to give Sanogo some more game time in the second half of the season, especially as Sow picked up an injury playing for Senegal in the African Cup of Nations. Malouda is coming on a free at the end of the season as competition for Willian and as a French star; I also want to bring in Cissokho for LB and Hazard, but don't think I really need to make any more major signings.
  3. I'm playing a 4-5-1 with a DM (Matuidi or Kara), 2 CMs (Pastore at Advanced PM attacking; Martin Deep-Lying PM support), AMR/AML as Inside Forwards (Menez, Willian, Gameiro and Nene rotating) and Sow or Gameiro as poacher. I'm not expecting Heinze to do much other than be a backup as you say, and my fingers are definitely crossed for Fierro and Sanogo. Might have to switch to 2 up-front with all these strikers, although much like you I consider my AML and AMR strikers too. Incidentally, Willian actually does a very good job as a poacher as he's got pace to burn! EDIT - I just drew Spurs in the Europa league...how can I try to beat them!?! Still, Levy flogged Modric to Man City so it's not really Spurs is it! 2-2 at WHL in the first leg...
  4. Finally decided to post on here after an absence of several years; PSG being the catalyst. We're over halfway through the first season, and sitting pretty in 1st place in the league, 4 points clear of a so far very consistent Lyon, with a game in hand on them and 3rd place. In the last 32 of the Europa League, despite having pretty much only played reserves in that competition, in the finals of the League Cup, again using a reserve team, and the quarters of the French Cup. I brought in quite a few players at the start of the season, and then persuaded the board to bring Moussa Sow in for me during the Joker Window as competition for Gameiro. All of the team are playing really well, with a rotated front five of Gameiro (25 goals in 27 games), Sow, Menez, Willian (15 in 28 from AML) and Nene all deserving of starts which makes it very difficult to drop any of them. Pastore is excelling too since he moved to a MC role alongside Marvin Martin. I think the defence needs some work in the close season - I'm bringing in Heinze for his experience but he'll only ever be a backup option I imagine. I'm considering going after Adil Rami to join Sakho at centre back, but he's not currently interested. A new left back is also a priority, having brought in Wayne Bridge as a stop gap for the season, but he's not a player I'm particularly enamoured with. I'm looking forward to the free signings in the summer of Anelka and Saviola to add experience and finesse up front, and also Yaya Sanogo who will benefit from their experience. Too many forwards, but it's worth noting that many of them can play at Inside Forward on the right or left, where many of my goals have been coming from. Players in: Wayne Bridge (Loan, 325K) Moussa Sow 10.25M (8 goals in 16 games) Willian 7.5M (Foreign player of the year, beating Hazard) Marvin Martin 20M Sime Vrsaljko 4M Kara 900K Wilfried 2.5M Future transfers: Anelka (Free) Saviola (Free) Fierro (Free) Sanogo (Free) Heinze (Free) Right, that's a bit of an epic first post in years - sorry for taking up so much space, but I'm really enjoying this game, more than I have for several years now my beloved Spurs are too good to be a true challenge...
  5. Wow! I've never been inspired to post on here before, prefering to pillage other people's advice and give none of my own, but this tactic has made a difference that none of mine ever have! Let me paint the picture: I took over at Spurs at the start of the game, and immediately signed Leighton Baines and Yoann Gourcuff on loan. My first season went pretty much as expected and I finished 5th in the league, winning quite a few, losing quite a few, and drawing not very many, in true Spurs style. In close season I picked up Matias Fernandez, Hatem Ben Arfa, and Renato Augusto, not to mention Lucas, one of the best DMs on the game! Once again, however, my team couldn't go further than 5th, until the last game of the season where I beat 4th placed Man City and overtook them. No Champions' League football for us though, as Liverpool won the damn thing, despite finishing in the lower reaches of the table. My reputation did, however, increase enough to buy Torres, though I had to get rid of the very impressive looking Huddlestone to afford it. He went to Liverpool, who are clearly going nowhere under Van Gaal. In season three, I started playing with 2 upfront, preferring two out and out wingers (Lennon and Gourcuff or Ben Arfa) with Lucas holding the midfield and Fernandez inspiring play behind the front two. I was leaking goals though, and despite scoring more than anyone but Arsenal, I conceded more than anyone but the bottom three, leaving me sitting in 7th with an unhappy board. Then came Minimal Fuss v4! I've now won 9 games on the trot in the league, and Torres and Berbatov have been on fire! Lennon has come good too, going from an average rating of 7 and an assist every third game or so, to about 8 with at least one assist a game. Cheslea were thrashed at the Lane, and I'm now sitting pretty at the top of the table with a 2 point lead over the billionaire's babies, and 3 over the Scum from down the road. I don't look like losing, Torres has scored 32 already, and Berbatov has got 25 assists. Bring on the title, bring on the Champions' League, and bring on finally being able to sign a right back that doesn't make mistakes as a hobby in close season! Ok, it wasn't my tactic that got me here, but it was my signings that did the job, and I managed not to get sacked in seasons 1 and 2, playing my overly caution 4 1 2 2 1 formation! Thanks to Fuss - you sorted my game out good and proper! What are the odds on Torres scoring 50?
