Can you provide a screenshot of your tactic(s)?

I don't think the tactics have anything to do with this as XG and XGA are about the combined quality of the chances you create or the opponent creates against you. The tactic used lead to those numbers. Anything you over- or underperform is about quality of the players. However, given that my defensive players and keepers are performing average at least, I don't see where the problem is.

I agree that 19 XGA isn't the best in 19 games, but that shouldn't mean we concede 32 goals in 19 games, but about 19 give or take a few either way. The next "worse" performers in that regard are Brighton, with +3 goals conceded out of 28 XGA, or just over 10% underperforming.

  2. So, I'm halfway through my first season with Man Utd and I'm in 5th in the league. Looking at some statistics in the data hub, I came across this: (rather big screenshot, so in spoiler)

    Spoiler

    image.png.58e0be3b953827b4ac74e79da71f51e5.png

As you can see, we're massively underperforming in defense, conceding a whopping +66% more goals than we should be expected to. To set this in context, if we would've overperformed as much with scoring, we'd have scored 69 goals in 19 games.

Looking at individual players, Onana has an average rating of 6.74, my most used central defenders Varane, Martinez and Maguire have 6.83, 6.84 and 7.06. Varane, Martinez and Onana all have 1 mistake leading to a goal. So overall, it doesn't really look like one of them is the main cause of all this.

Is this just (really) bad luck?

It isn't that the striker won't score in the tactics but he scores a lot less than in other tactics.

The most i've got from a central striker in a single league season were 25 goals with the average over multiple seasons and savegames being around 15 league goals. Far away from the usual tactics you can everywhere and far from my FM 23 asymmetrical 3-4-3 where the central striker averaged almost 40 league goals per season.

But these are acceptable numbers in this tactics because the central striker isn't the only goalscorer. I get combined 25+ goals from the offensive wingers, 5+ goals from the CWB and 10+ goals from central midfielders. Plus goals from set pieces. These numbers don't look crazy high but these are just average numbers with sub-top to mid table teams. Better players produce higher numbers.

I have no problem with the striker not scoring 25+ goals every season. It's just that he isn't involved in build-up play either. I wonder if it even wouldn't be better to go strikerless and pull him to the AM strata as it feels like playing with only 10 all the time.

Any tips on how to get the strikers to score more? Mine are firing blanks

Same here, even with the tweaks to get more balls into the box. I just feel the striker is ignored during the game. Often one of the CM's has the ball in the zone just outside the penalty area, but they either opt to shoot or they pass it wide to the fullbacks or wingers.

I do like the general setup of this. It's a nice realistic tactic.

I think the key is to play unwanted players into some form. I'm only after starting out yesterday and just entered October, but Maguire, Lindelof, Varane, McTominay, Eriksen, Dalot, Wan-Bissaka, Van de Beek, and Martial are all wanted by other clubs already, even with a couple of 1-year clauses triggered.

    ...

Just sold Casemiro for €140m to the Arabians... It's a mess though, because Rashford immediately started complaining about lack of squad depth for defensive midfield. I got Guido Rodriguez in on a free, but that wasn't enough.

Well, just finished my first summer transfer window:

    OUT:

    Spoiler

    image.png.99c05fd790b801b8c72fdf1ea5a74a72.png

Managed to get rid of quite some dead wood. AWB, Williams, Maguire, Donny and Martial were all players playing a small role in my squad and/or on too high wages. Casemiro was hunted by the Arabians, as was Varane in January. I again counteroffered a ridiculous amount, which they accepted, albeit €104m payed in 4 6-monthly instalments. Unfortunately, I had to sell Eriksen too. He wanted to leave on a free at the end of his contract, so I opted to cash in on him. On top of that, I got a decent fee for Pellistri. Not visible in this screengrab is Lindelof, who left to Newcastle for €50m, quite early in the transferwindow. Evans retired.

Some players went out on loan too: Greenwood (forced by the game, I hate that...), Hansen-Aaroen, Mainoo, Fish, Shoretire, Fernandez, Oyedele, Hannibal and Vitek are all needing some first team action. Vitek didn't get a work permit either, so I hope he can get that one after some first team action in Belgium.

    IN:

    Spoiler

    image.png.c136c135a44b7e19c079ac1dc2c70534.png

With a lot of backups leaving, I had to get some in too. Vitik and Edwards will provide cover for Diomande, Pavlovic for Martinez. Rodriguez is replacing Casemiro, Abraham will be backup for Hojlund. Neves will be in rotation with Mount. Sugawara is a backup right back, who can also play as a winger further up front. Finally, Gillespie will be the 3rd keeper after Heaton retired. Barreto is a cheap investment on a decent young player, who I plan to sell for a profit within 2 or 3 years.

I also have a young prospect joining us in January:

  6. Few days off work, so finally managed to start a save. I started the game in classic mode with first window transfer activity disabled.

I'm now early February and these are my transfer deals of January

    Out:

    image.png.949d972c10c511466abfb78d7c4f50a8.png

(don't mind the default club badges, still need to update those)

Well, I got 2 offers in for Varane from Arabian clubs. They came in with offers of about €80m, but I really didn't want to sell him so I replied with a ridiculous counteroffer of €120m, all up front. To my surprise, that wasn't that ridiculous at all and they immediately accepted...

Diallo, Mainoo and Hansen-Aarøen are loaned out to get some first team action. van de Beek was moaning, so decided to loan him out, hopefully gaining a bit of value in the process so I can get a decent fee for him in the summer transferwindow.

    In:

    image.png.4787a9424e85c737198ccd38108c8b3b.png

Only 2 incoming transfers. Smith Rowe will act as a backup for Fernandes. He was transferlisted and I wanted to get some homegrown blood in.

Diomande will replace Varane in the long run. Currently I'm playing Lindelof as he's already used to the tactic.

Quite happy with this window. Varane will be a loss in the short term, but that fee was just bonkers for a 30 year old central defender.

  7. My ins after season 1:

    image.png.17195ccfb69962bb9f0a5f8411e502a3.png

    Outs:

    Bailly €9.75m
    Hannibal €4m
Donny loan to Parma with a mandatory fee of €37.5m
    Telles €3.8m
    Fred €2.2m
Elanga loan to Schalke04 with optional fee of €35m
loans: Garnacho, Laird, Tuanzebe, Mengi, Alvaro Fernandez, Pellistri, Shoretire, Mainoo

Which gives this as my ideal starting lineup

    image.png.ee6e0d868669109b1b2dd4d3c91d1422.png

Shaw refuses to sign a new contract at reduced wages, so his contract will run out after this season. I have no idea yet who to sign as his replacement. I could also shift Martinez over to left back and look for a new CB.

Ideally I will replace Martial as well.

So we have had a decent start to the season, but this is not helping.

    injuries.png.5b4043537e76de5cd58b8a5181074d48.png

Kane got injured for a month, then 3 games later Hojlund out for a month, next game Rashford now out for 3 weeks.

Wan Bissaka out for 2 months from the start of the season, Shaw out for 2 weeks.

Luckily Martial is still around. He was out of contract at end of last season, but I decided to activate his extension purely because I like him. I then signed Kane and was gonna sell him but with no luck, now I'm glad he' still here.

Yeah, that's some bad luck there... Martial might perform well, but he's inconsistent. You never know what to expect from him.

Big transferperiod there! How is Garnacho developing?

  9. Looking at the last few pages, it seems like the bugs aren't the real issue, but the lack of follow-up (or perceived lack of follow-up) from SI. To be honest, it's something I'm familiar with as well. I did raise quite a few ME things some editions back (can't remember which one), but felt nothing was being done about it. Worse, those issues are still present in the current ME. An example is the wingers still shooting from ridiculous angles, which I flagged together with quite a few examples.

Earlier in this thread I said that the number of comments in this thread could be seen as some kind of feedback too, which was later deleted by a mod. Personally, it all adds up as if they just don't care about the feedback.

Let that be the feedback: communicate better, with what SI are doing with the feedback from the users. It could be that the user was mistaken, but clearly state why. Not just "our data suggests something else".

Home game VS Liverpool, we lose Casemiro and Sabitzer due to injury before the game, so I decided to trust Kobbie Mainoo in the DM role as a DLP.

1st senior goal, 1st goal for Man Utd, absolutely brilliant.

Mainoo has been decent for me as well. He got some chances in the first squad during the first season and is loaned out at PAOK in the 2nd season.

Any big changes to your tactics since the latest update? I haven't settled down yet and no idea where to go. I tend to play a 4231, but looks like 433 is a bit more effective this time?

I’ve tried to remain restrained for quite a while now, but EVERYONE knows the bugs that have been around for years, because, they’ve been around for YEARS!

The bug tracker is literally pointless. I mean it’s SI’s game. They made it. They tested it. They already KNOW the bugs the game has. And if they need us to point them out to them they are doing it wrong. Some of the bugs are bugs that have been in the game for YEARS!

Reporting them, again, in the bug tracker does WHAT exactly!? Sure, point out new ones that have been caused by new “features” (even though I fail to see how a studio can not see them for themselves) But ones that have been around forever!??

SI. Use the vast profits you make as a company to STOP the yearly cycle, for at least a year, hire more staff that can fix the most ridiculously SIMPLE bugs that have been in the game for years and then release a POLISHED version of what has been basically the same game for at least the last 4 years now.

I don’t need more “features”. I want what you’ve created to WORK without breaking immersion and without making you look like clowns.

    FIX THE BASICS!

(This rant has been inspired by the line “report it in the bug tracker” for literally ANYTHING, even bugs that have been around for years.)

The worst part is that if real life football has some new thing (VAR, defenders being allowed into the box when there's a goal kick etc), it's possible to integrate those immediately. So the "it's hard to implement so it takes time" doesn't always hold up.

Being presented with the trophy is the bug. Serie A decide by head to head results and it was equal between you and Lazio.

    Good luck in the playoff!

Surely it must be head-to-head result, if that's equal the goal difference, if that's equal again the number of goals scored? Even if the head-to-head was equal, Napoli has a superior goal difference, so should be crowned champions.

RE the survey its also a small % of the market. Ben has around 110.000 subscribers less than half of that follow him on twitter. FM22 sold between 1-2million copies (can't find the exact number) but a article 5 months ago said they sold over 1 million so even if we take the minimum at 1million copies and Bens high of 110,000 that's only 11% of the consumer base. his latest tweet suggested 13,000 replies which is 1.3%.  which isn't a true representation of the consumer opinion just his small % of it. I know a lot of people that play the game that have never watched, read or listened to any FM content or visited the forum. Miles has said before in interviews the "community" is only a small part of the consumer. Whilst its great we as a community try to improve the game we have to also understand that SI don't just cater to us. The best way to improve the game is to feedback in the way SI asks via Beta testing threads and feature requests.

RE the game itself FM23 is the best in the series, there might be areas that haven't improved where you'd hoped but its better than last year and in fairness to SI improves year on year. The main outcry seems to be around graphics but again its a small area of the market. The graphics for me are spot on I don't need them to look any better than they are, my focus is more on the ME which has taken a massive step forward this year and Data which has improved and kept ahead of the market as the IRL game of football is becoming more data driven.

RE the skin, I agree its not the best but with so many great community efforts I'd rather SI focused more on improving the core game than a skin that I can easily download an better one and SI can spend more time improving Set Pieces :D

1000 respondents is usually enough to get statistical relevance, regardless of the total population you want to test.

edit: to be clear and complete, this is true as long as you select your respondents completely random, which is not the case for Ben's survey.

Disagree. The complaints in feedback come from a tiny minority of forum members, and forum members are a tiny minority of the users. If you want a more representative view of the game, look at reviews on Steam: more than 5,000 reviews and 'very positive' overall.

I'm very happy with FM23 - of course there are things that could be better but I've played hundreds of hours since beta and encountered very few bugs. As for SI listening to users, I wish SI would listen less and stick to their own vision of the game. Every time the devs do listen it results in a downgrade.

Looking at the bigger numbers, it does look like this year's edition hasn't had the same reception as last year's:

    FM23 has a 83.61% approval rating vs FM22's 90.37% (according to steamdb.info)

Number of players 2 weeks after release of the beta: 72232 for FM23 vs 75398 for FM22

Peak number of concurrent players october-january for the release year: 78687 for FM23 vs 88767 for FM22.

You could say the falling number of players has something to do with the recession going on, but the approval ratings don't. FM has always scored close or in the 90's for approval rating on Steam. 83% is still a good score though, but relative speaking, this hasn't been up to the normal standard.

Anyone else finding that your TIs seemingly do nothing this year?

I play with shorter passing and high closing down and yet consistently in every game my players a hoofing the ball miles (9/10 times to the opposition) and they always let the opposition run pass them with out getting close or trying to tackle

No, not for me (at the moment). I do find that TI's need to be combined with the correct player roles, or at least some PI's.

For example, my left back was hoofing it up the field all the time. I did notice he often really didn't have a shorter forward passing option: my left winger was playing on the shoulder of the opposition defence while my left sided central midfielder was sticking to the middle of the pitch and easily marked out of the game. I added the "stay wider" PI to that central midfielder and now my left back as a short forward option available. I guess roaming from position could help too, but that one is a bit more random to me.

  16. Can't complain really either... I only find it hard to offload players.

Just went into the 2nd season. De Gea, Jones, Fred and Ronaldo all left after their contracts ran out. Wan-Bissaka is off to Wolves, Maguire is loaned out to Juventus with a mandatory fee at the end.

Martial, Shaw and Lindelof are at my U21's, probably until the end of their contracts.

Brought in Giorgio Scalvini, Diogo Costa, Rasmus Hojlund, Yaser Asprilla and Joao Pedro.

Also playing in a fairly simple 4123.

Mengi is playing well in his loan at Sunderland. Problem is they were predicted 1st in League One(one of the reasons I accepted the loan move offer) but are currently in a relegation fight now in 21st. Question I have is should I recall in January if things don't improve and try for another loan move to a club that could be further up the league or even in another league.

    Teden Mengi_ Profile-2.png

    Teden Mengi_ Form.png

(bit late, sorry) Why recall him when he's doing a good job? The aim for sending young players out on loan is give them first team playing time so they can develop. Doesn't really matter if he gets his playing time while playing for a top team or a relegation candidate in the league, as long as he gets his playing time at a playing level suited to him.

That's my take on it, others might disagree.

  18. I started a new save and this is the PL at the end:

    image.thumb.png.4eedb635ac53961724f6fb94c80d5b04.png

Quite frustrating as I felt it was one of my better seasons on FM in a while. Lost it at Leicester at the end of April with a 2-0 defeat, just before another loss at Liverpool. After that we weren't in control anymore. We won all remaining games, but so did Liverpool.

    On the other hand:

    image.png.52c17f098b6b9522f735a8d3abf4833d.png

So we won the CL on penalties against Dortmund. Together with the League Cup, it's a weird double to win.

I had a big summer transfer window

    image.png.214b02bbf75e36958b228035ca0e921c.png

And managed to get rid of some surplus players too (Mata €850k, Bailly €30m, Lingard €7.5m, Pereira €9.5m, Telles €45m and Chong €2.8m). Didn't manage to sell Fred though.
