  1. Well how am I supposed to evaluate a tactic if my team never learns it fully?
  2. I started a Southampton save, and immediately set two main tactics on my first day. Set match preparation to the highest level, tactics only. We played 6 friendlies, and now it's the eve of our season opener. And still, we're only 'competent' at best on any of the facets of tactic familiarity -- and 'awkward' at worst (on mentality and passing style). What else can I do? We used the same tactic for the entire offseason. I understand a team needs time to grasp a tactic, but seriously -- over a month with 6 games, and at this rate it'll be December before we're anywhere near a fluid level.
  3. Ah, that did it. I should have known that by now! Thanks!
  4. No, that can't be it. Reveillere has continental reputation, Clyne national.
  5. As Southampton, I've signed Anthony Reveillere on a free in the first season. I'd like to have him tutor one of my young fullbacks -- preferably Clyne. But when I go to Clyne's 'training' page, it tells me there aren't any suitable tutors. Why?? They both play the same position.
  6. Just earlier I had a game where my keeper was booked because he ran like 10 yards outside the box and picked up the ball, without even being in the vicinity of any opposition players.
  7. I don't know, I still have nightmares about FM13's beast-winger rampages that were all too common in the early stages after release. It seems that our current issues have similar symptoms as those, but the disease is different. The problem I have, not being a tactical guru, is not being able to discriminate between "bug" and "individual tactical mistake". It's difficult to even formalize the notion of "bug" in such a simulation because it should sometimes intentionally cause players to do stupid things. If we can't trust the match engine's depiction of the "real story", then we really don't know at all if we're seeing bugs or the failure of our tactics.
  8. I'm glad to see I'm not the only one having these problems. I've forced myself to lay off for a while because life's too short to let a computer game make you so angry. What is it about this game that makes it so good at infuriating you sometimes?
  9. Is this option what we have all been waiting for (we actually get semi-randomly generated players, not the real players with fake names)?
  10. Club: Real Madrid Budget: 150 million Looking for: a Spanish replacement for Xabi Alonso (who doesn't play for a rival like Barcelona or At. Madrid) Season: 2014-2015 My goal is to re-Spanish-ize the squad. I'm emphasizing youth development, but as my policy is not to extend the contracts of any non-Spaniards in the squad (except maybe Ronaldo), I've spent a decent amount bringing in good Spanish players as replacements. But I'm having a hard time identifying anyone good enough to truly replace Alonso in the current crop of young Spanish midfielders. There are good defensive midfielders out there, but I need a true deep-lying playmaker who can get to 20 passing and creativity, great anticipation, and can play defense. In my opinion, guys like Herrera and Benat just aren't good enough. They're good players in their own right, but I don't think they'll ever reach the level of an Alonso -- but I encourage you to prove me wrong. I've thought about Pardo, but I'm not sure he'll ever get there either -- and he costs a lot. Maybe the answer is to just wait for a regen -- though Alonso will be long-retired before I have a chance to develop a 15-year old to take his place.

But I'm having a hard time identifying anyone good enough to truly replace Alonso in the current crop of young Spanish midfielders. Unfortunately some of the best candidates are at Barcelona and are untouchable (and it wouldn't be realistic to buy them anyway). There are good defensive midfielders out there, but I need a true deep-lying playmaker who can get to 20 passing and creativity, great anticipation, and can play defense. 12. My Schalke midfield isn't anywhere near that good, and he's still on 2.5 stars. In any case, I don't think he's that much worse than Radja Nainggolan -- who's usually in the 3.5-4 star range.
  13. I understand that star ratings are tied to reputation and relative ability -- my point is that both his reputation and ability are not so relatively low that he should be 2.5 stars on my Arsenal save (or on my Schalke save, for that matter). I was really wondering if maybe there's some key attribute he's lacking in that prevents him from being rated higher. My scout says he would "be a good player for most sides", but I've seen much worse players described as "would be a leading star for most sides".
  14. I mean it's not uncommon for teams to inexplicably ignore players in this fashion, but what's the most confusing is that my scouts never rate him. Not that star-ratings are the be-all, end-all, but I just wonder how those attributes could translate into a 2.5-star rating.
  15. What is it about this player the computer is understanding that I don't? In all my saves he never sees the light of day for City, then eventually is transfer-listed and offered for loan at a cut-price (for far less than he was bought). And my scouts never want to give him greater than 2.5 stars -- but to me he looks like an ideal DM, either a ball-winner or anchor man. In my Arsenal save, I bit and took him on season-long loan. He was a defensive rock for me and led the team in both tackles and tackles-completed ratio. Other than the absence of much of an offensive game, what's not to like? He's a physical beast with great mentals, and he never quits.
  16. This is one of the biggest problems I have with tycoons (or any chairman who wants "high profile signings"). They don't consider how much you actually need to buy these players -- usually your transfer budget is way too small.
  17. I'm managing Schalke, have all German leagues loaded. But the players in the national team are fake (i.e. they have made-up names, but are all analogues of real-life players). This is strange since all of the other nations seem to actually use real players on their national teams. How did this happen?
  18. I had a shootout recently where the opposition keeper stopped *all five* of my penalties. I've only seen it that one time in FM, so I guess you could write it off as an anomaly. Has that ever happened before?
  19. I'll try that. By the way is there any way to set a standing OI that's applied for each match, instead of having to do it each game?
  20. I see this one all the time, even when there are good passing options available. There's also the backwards pass from defender to goalie that goes horribly off target and out of bounds for a corner, and then the fullback dribbling the ball out of bounds for no reason when nobody's around. But don't expect much support on here. It's heresy to suggest the game is flawed. It's your fault.
  21. The biggest problem I have defensively is wingers cutting inside and then turning into Maradona, slicing through defenders before scoring. My team is stocked with players with good aerial ability, so I'd almost prefer my fullbacks to shepherd them to the byline and attempt a cross rather than cutting in. What's the best way to achieve this? I've tried standing off to try and have a central defender back in position to stop a winger cutting inside like that, but it doesn't really seem to work and it's really annoying watching my fullbacks stand off while their man runs roughshod like that. But I think pressing more is ineffective as well, since the fullback may commit too early.
  22. Ah, I see. So if a guy is "not used to closing down opponents as often as asked to", doesn't that imply that he is used to some other setting for closing down? If everything should be new to him when he switches clubs, then all closing down settings should be equally unfamiliar. Or maybe this resetting of familiarity means that he arrives with affinity for only "default" tactical settings (i.e. he's unfamiliar with "press more" and "stand off", but okay with "default").
  23. So "adapting" is affected by tactic, formation, and role? I know some players can be used to playing at a certain tempo, closing down less/more, and maybe passing directness. But how do we find out what the player is used to, aside from these messages from the AM?
