I've been out of the world of football manager loop for quite a few years now (I think 2016 was the last I played with any real earnest). Can anyone recommend a good team to start with to get me back into the swing of things before I commit to anything a bit more long term?

4-1-5-1? No wonder he overachieved using 11 outfield players.
Hahaha, my bad! Completely agree I can see where the overachievement came from. 12 players would definitely be a benefit
Ah yes, I used a 3-1-5-1 in the first season and it was very good without the ball. The issue was that with the ball, it was difficult to get the diamonds and that the striker was often isolated. Fantastic for pressing though. The strikers in my squad aren't fantastic so may use this as a a way to see out a game, could even drop the STC back to AMC as I noticed somebody else in the post had done to good effect

Fantastic thread! I've been trying to mould my Mainz squad towards the typical Ajax style in terms of the technical side of the game but have been struggling to replicate the style of play. I was going down the 4-3-3 route but given that I'm quite partial to a 3 at the back formation this is great!
Do you think it would make any difference not being one of the bigger teams in the league? I know you mentioned you overachieved in one of your seasons, but that was using the 4-1-5-1 variation I think.

2 non-EU players from abroad per year is the main rule in terms of transfers and there is no registration.
Co-ownership is basically that you sell half of a player's playing rights and retain the other half. You can choose which team he stays with during a period of 1 or 2 years after which both teams make an offer and the player goes to the highest bidder (current team if offers are equal). During the period each team can buy the other's 50% share, while a third team would have to negotiate with both to get the player. Useful for limiting risk on transfers as a big team and equally useful for small teams to get some money in without losing the player.
Certainly, if jimbob has any further questions we'll stick to PM's.Cheers for that, if I have any more questions Ill PM you
Sorry cleon

No problem. If you do end up in Italy and have any questions just ask and I'll do my best to provide an answer.
Thanks mate, there are no specific rules are there in italy? I thought it was similar to the prem? Also just been reading a blog about Pro Vercilli on FM and he mentions co-ownership deals. How do they work?

Pro Vercelli were a major force in the early years of Italian football, but had since dropped to Serie C1/C2 and it's basically one of those fallen giants games. They were promoted back to Serie B last year, however.
Cheers mate yeah ive just seen the wiki page, just started a fallen giant game with monaco but if this goes badly might have a go with them. Ive never managed in Italy, might be worth a trip.

I know this isnt tactic related but I didnt want to create a brand new thread in the general discussion. Who are Pro Vercilli, somebody mentioned them yesterday and said they are a good team to manage. Why is this? Are they special in some crazy way. Sorry for my complete ignorance

Thanks!
If you change currency, does it convert the figures or just change the units?
It converts I do believe. 15million pounds isnt the same as 15million Euros so the game would be really uneven.

How do I stop the opposition players simply waltzing round my players. Even with hassle opponents or closing down or get stuck in my players just seem to stand there and never even get close to the opposition.
If you find they are dribbling round your players I wouldnt close them down as much as they are obviously better techincally than your players. Id stand off a little bit and try to keep your shape and limit their options, rather than rush out too them, for your man to get taken on leaving him out of position and out of the game

Go to a players profile, click the training tab and you can choose train new position there

Cheers for the response Yeah I didn't fancy jumping in with a Liverpool or City purely because of the strength they already had. I want Leeds to be my more long term save, but just fancied something a little more short term to get myself back into it.
Wow has the UI changed since I last looked
