What attributes are needet to take advantage of "blast the ball..." ppm?

Recommended Posts

I'm interested in what attributes are needed to take advantage of blast the ball ppm. I looked at some players like Gerrard and they have both blast the ball, and shoot with power, with high finishing and long shot attributes.

So are finishing and long shots the key attributes needed for this ppm?

I'd hazard a guess and say the mental attributes 'Composure' and 'Decisions' might have an influence. Composure may seem a bit of a contradiction though, and I'm not certain decisions always applies to shooting.

I reckon technique is quite important as well.

Runs With Ball Down Left

Pros: Great flanking move for players with high dribbling skill and a good cross, but lack other attributes like creativity / flair / Composure / passing / Decisions.

Cons: If used on a creative winger with more than dribbling / crossing skills he might become too one-dimensional. He won't use other spaces and skills he may have to his full potential.

Good for: Wingers, Full Backs

Skill needed: Pace, Acceleration, Technique, Dribbling.

Runs With Ball Down Right

Pros: Great flanking move for players with high dribbling skill and a good cross, but lack other attributes like creativity / flair / Composure / passing / Decisions.

Cons: If used on a creative winger with more than dribbling / crossing skills he might become too one-dimensional. He won't use other spaces and skills he may have to his full potential.

Good for: Wingers, Full Backs

Skill needed: Pace, Acceleration, Technique, Dribbling, Crossing.

Runs With Ball Down Center

Pros: Good move for strong attackers to break though the opponents defense, or for pacey strikers to split the defense up. Also can be very effective on an AMC if you play with 2 strikers. The 2 strikers are marked, making room for the AMC which he can use to dribble and shoot on goal.

Cons: If outclassed by the defense, you will loose ball possession easily.

Good for: TS, FS, AMC

Skill needed: Pace, Acceleration, Technique, Dribbling, ( Possibly Strength, Balance and other mental skills like bravery and aggression can be very helpfull as well)

Gets Into Opposition Area

Pros: Great move for attacking midfielders if you want him to behave as extra striker when your attack gets near the opponent's box. Also can be effective for TS with low mentality settings. Maybe even on defenders or DMC's if you want them to aid the attack for the element of surprise.

Cons: Not that great a move to have unless the player has the skill to act as a effective striker. Also leaves room for the opposition to exploit.

Good for: AMC, Wingers, TS

Skill needed: Finishing, ??Composure??, Heading, Jumping, ??Positioning??, ??Off the ball??

Moves Into Channels

Pros: Great move for your pacey striker to learn, especially if combined with a AMC/Playmaker who has Killer Balls. Also great for strong lone strikers.

Cons: Depending on opponent, the channels can be in places where it's not very effective. Also the striker can lose connection with the midfield because he's running into the channels, while he should offer himself to get the ball to continue or setup the attack.

Good for: FS, TS

Skill needed: Off the ball, ??Positioning??, ??Decisions??

Gets Forward Whenever Possible

Pros: Useful if playing with attacking full backs or wingbacks to make sure they aid in the attack. Also decent move to have for your AMC if you want him to score goals.

Cons: If employing a defensive tactic it will create openings in the defense for the opposition to exploit.

Good for: FB, WB, AMC

Skill needed: Stamina, Off the ball, Pace, Acceleration + any Attacking skills would be beneficial.

Plays Short Simple Passes

Pros: Great move for a defensive midfielder to make sure the ball reaches the creative players like the AMC and FS should he lack a decent passing skill. Can be usefull for TGM with poor passing attributes as well.

Cons: Can cause slowdowns in the game, and can be a hindrance if trying to Counter Attack.

Good for: DMC, DM, TS

Skill needed: Low passing, composure, creativity

Tries Killer Balls Often

Pros: Probably one of the best PPMs in FM 2009 if used on wingers or attacking midfielders in my experience, and will help your pacey strikers create a lot of chances.

Cons: Without a decent Striker to take advantage of the killer balls, it's pretty useless. You lose possession if the killer ball fails.

Good for: AMC, Wingers

Skill needed: Passing, Creativity, Decisions, Composure

Shoots From Distance

Pros: Potentially great move for consistent, technical players with high Long Shots skill.

Cons: Very unreliable, will cause a lot of goals to fly over the bar, or easily catched by the GK.

Good for: AMC, Wingers, FS, TS

Skill needed: Long shots, Composure, Technique, Finishing, Decisions

Shoots With Power

Pros: Potentially good move to break try and score goals from someone with high long shots skill. Combine with Get Into Opposition Area, or Arrives lat in opposition area for the best results.

Cons: Very unreliable, will cause a lot of goals to fly over the bar.

Good for: Any

Skill needed: Long shots, Composure, Finishing

Places Shots

Pros: Great move to beat the GK in One on One situations. Also effective on players (mainly strikers) with high composure and finishing, but low long shots attributes.

Cons: Requires a technical player for the best effect.

Good for: AMC, FS

Skill needed: Finishing, Technique, Composure

Curls Balls

Pros: Decent move for technical players to beat the GK in One on One situations. Or make long shots more dangerous. ??Also can be effective for wingers, so they cross balls with more curve??

Cons: Requires a technical player for the best effect.

Good for: AMC, FS, Wingers

Skill needed: Technique, ??Crossing for wingers??, Long shots

Likes To Round Keeper

Pros: Effective in one on one situations. The player rounds the keeper or creates a better angle to score from.

Cons: It may be the wrong decision if his action fails and might have been better to just shoot.

Good for: Skilled forwards / AMC's

Skill needed: Technique, dribbling, Acceleration, ??Decisions??, ??Pace??

Likes To Lob Keeper

Pros: Effective in one on one situations.

Cons: It may be the wrong decision if his action fails and might have been better to just shoot.

Good for: FS, TS, Wingers

Skill needed: Technique, Finishing, Composure, ??Decisions??, ??First Touch??

Likes To Try To Beat The Offside Trap

Pros: Effective on fast strikers or wingers. They will position very sharp near the border of the defensive line to beat the offside trap. Very effective if used in a counter attacking strategy. Also effective with a good passing AMC / MC with high decision attributes and possibly "Often try killer balls" behind him.

Cons: Can result in loads of offsides. ??Might also have a negative effect if the opponent isn't playing with a high defensive line and/or offside trap??

Good for: FS, Wingers

Skill needed: Off the ball, Pace, Acceleration, Dribbling, ??Decisions??

Argues With Officials

Pros: Unclear yet. Looks like this is more of a "Bad habit". Maybe effective on a player with high influence attributes, or your captain, to influence the Referee to your advantage.

Cons: If the judge is strict or the player doesn't have the right attributes, it has a high likelihood of having negative effect.

Good for: ??Captain, Any player with high influence??

Skill needed: Influence, ??Professional mentality??

Plays No Through Balls

Pros: Decent move if employing a defensive, control oriented tactic. Effective on players with low passing, creativity or composure attributes to keep possession instead of doing somethin he can't.

Cons: Will make Counter Attacks less effective. Has a negative effect if a skilled player with the right passing attributes has this PPM.

Good for: Any

Skill needed: Low passing, composure, creativity

Dwells On Ball

Pros: Unknown. ??Bad habit?? ??Maybe increases effectiveness of "Hold up the ball"??

Cons: Leaves you a bit more vulnerable to be closed down, and will slow the game down.

Good for: DMC, TS

Skill needed: Strength, Balance, Decisions. Passing would be very effective as well so he holds the ball and gives the right pass on the right moment.

Arrives Late In Opponents Area

Pros: Decent move to have on some defensive players to come forward, like lurk outside the area. Scenario: The Opponent box is packed and the defender comes forward and uses the space to get the ball and shoot or pass/assist. Another scenario is that the player comes late to the opponent's box so he "sneaks" in and they probably leave him unmarked.

Cons: Can cause disruptions in the flow of the game, and cause slow downs in the tempo. Also the Defender / DMC is out of his position, making you vulnarable against counter attacks.

Good for: DMC, DC

Skill needed: Decisions, ??Off the ball??, ??Long shots?? ... ??More??

Tries To Play Way Out Of Trouble

Pros: Great move to control the ball out of the defense. ??Could be very effective for not so strong TS or DMC which are set on hold up the ball so they create space and avoid physical contact?? ??Maybe even effective on quick dribbling strikers with low strength / balance / mental attributes to avoid physical contact and lose the ball??

Cons: ??Not usefull on skilled players as they should be a plague for the defense?? ??

Good for: FB, WB, DMC, TS, FS

Skill needed: Low first touch, dribbling, technique, strength, balance, bravery

Stays Back At All Times

Pros: Ensures a bit more consistence performance amongst your central defenders/sweepers. Also for full backs if employing a defensive tactic. ??Probably best used on low stamina / pace / acceleration players so he just stays focussed on defending instead of running away from his position??

Cons: If playing on the offensive this can be a hindrance, depending on if you want the player to aid in the attack or not.

Good for: DC, Sweeper, FB

Skill needed: Low Pace, Acceleration, Stamina

Dives Into Tackles

Pros: Makes tackles more effective, especially with high tackling skill. Probable most effective on attacking / midfield players.

Cons: If he misses the tackle, he's beaten. So very vulnerable in defense.

Good for: Midfielders, Strikers

Skill needed: Tackling, Decisions, Concentration, ??Bravery??, Determination

Does Not Dive Into Tackles

Pros: Potentially good move for your defensive players with low tackling skill. To keep a player marked instead of "gambling" on a diving tackle.

Cons: Makes your tackles less scary, and thus less likely to have an effect on the player being tackled.

Good for: Any

Skill needed: Low tackling, High marking & Concentration

Hits Free Kick with Power

Pros: Potentially good move if you have a defensive player with decent Free Kick ability in order to get the ball up front. Or blast the ball into the goals with power from a free kick.

Cons: Most of the time your best Free Kick takers are your attacking players, and for an attacking player to use this move will just blast the ball over the bar in most cases. It has the potential to be a decent move, but in it's current state it almost seem bugged to the point of being totally useless.

Good for:

Skill needed:
