4-2-3-1 and variants - my approach to FM09

4-2-3-1 and variants.

I spent time looking at forums trying to get advise and even trying other people's tactics. There is nothing like designing your own tactic and sticking with it. This really does extend the enjoyment of the game. (Or even start to give enjoyment in the game).

After looking at Liverpool's win against Real Madrid I wanted to create something similar to bring the best out of a defensive midfielder in order to help with the defence. The least said about the Boro result though the better.

So I read the TT&F 09 and basically took the elements from the positions section apart from 2 players. But more of that later.

My formation is a 4-2-3-1 and the idea is for the DMC to protect the defence and let the others do their job.

I looked at my players and tried to tweak to their strengths. Now I am not saying the tactic is the be all and end all but the ideas should be able to help create a tactic.

I am not going to post the tactic only the instructions and pictures of the tactic.

My apologies if the thumbnails do not work. The links are there though to FMScreenies.

Firstly the team instructions.

I wanted my team to be attacking but not too attacking so I set it to 15. If you want to attack more then go ahead. I have not created a defensive one yet as I have to get to grips with this one first. The creative freedom is normal except for the defensive 5. GK, DC & DMC. I have set these to 1 to see how they are first. I may tweak them later if they are good but I want them to follow what I want them to do first of all.

I haven't ticked playmaker or targetman but give it a try if you want.

4-2-3-1 Version 2 is the left midfielder pushed up to the AML role to try to attack more.

Fixtures and results

Some weird results away and some draws. I was getting to grips with the away side still. These are the matches that I strarted and used the tactic in. The Aston Villa defeat was a classic “players tired after coming back from Kiev for the Champions League.” I didn't pay attention and would have played more of a reserve team. Luckily I had a few days to recover. Ignore the 10th in the Premier League as well. This is from the next year's pre-season. I had won the league before I started the tactic.

Player Instructions and why.

Goalkeeper

Not much to see really. Used the TT&F to set the instructions and set it to defender collect. I tend to find that booting it up field normally means it comes back quicker. It also give the team time to group.

Centre Backs

http://www.fmscreenies.com/images/m8nvdhv09fidcv81mao.jpg

What do I want my centre backs to do – defend primarily. If you want them to take the ball up the field and join the play then by all means be my guest and click it. That makes me nervous.

I set the mentality to 9 and passing to mixed as I don't want them to boot the ball up or play it too short all the time. I will let them decide that.

I want them to tight mark but not man mark as I don't want them pulled out of position too much. If anyone comes inside the area then they will sort them out.

Right Back

http://www.fmscreenies.com/images/hnx2udgm7kqdk7jjhjwa.jpg

I looked at the right backs that I have at my disposal and saw that the crossing is not the greatest. Steven Darby & Alvaro Arbeloa have 12 for crossing. So I set the crossing to mixed. Their mentality is a few notches below the team instructions at 12 and their closing down is own half.

On the right hand side I want the right midfielder to cross with the right back supporting not overlapping.

Left Back

http://www.fmscreenies.com/images/hc8elx9j9adfa9jt1l4b.jpg

My primary left back is Insua who has 15 for crossing so I wanted him to do more crossing than the right back.

I have set the long shots and through balls to rarely but there is no reason not to. I have just set them up this way. His job is to obviously cross the ball from the left while the left midfielder comes inside and helps with the striker. He is set to mixed for cross aim but you can try it on the far post or to target man if you like.

Defensive Midfield

http://www.fmscreenies.com/images/gkmy5rthl42l8smn5vg8.jpg

This is the first of the defensive midfielders. He is there primarily to provide cover for the centre backs but also helps with the attack. His settings are pretty defensive and his job really is to push the ball onto the wide areas. If you want to keep a lead I imagine you could set his forward runs to rarely. If he is good at longs shots then by all means give it a go. I rarely have success at long shots so I generally don't go for it.

Defensive Midfield Destroyer

http://www.fmscreenies.com/images/89mlxlytbrxv0ut520.jpg

His job is to help snuff out any attacks and stop the opposition. His tackling is set to hard so it give it all and closing down to whole pitch. His other settings are quite defensive but you can cut down his forward runs if he gives to much space behind.

Centre Midfield

http://www.fmscreenies.com/viewer.php?file=93j9t97ytet0cn9yoc13.jpg

You can make him playmaker if you like as he will be the runner and creator. I want him to close down the whole pitch stopping but give him creative freedom so he can cause havoc (Not sure if the 2 settings are counter productive ). He needs to be a decent box to box midfielder with stamina and good creative skils then give him a whirl.

Right Midfield

http://www.fmscreenies.com/images/y0q9vmob1po0trej9sy4.jpg

This is the crosser of the two wide midfielders. His job primarily is to take the ball to the byline and cross to the far post. Decent winger attributes would be nice; pace, dribbling, crossing etc.

Left Midfield

http://www.fmscreenies.com/images/ztnevvqy0sd8bvlk5yk.jpg

His job is to come infield from wide positions and fire on into the top corner. So a left midfielder/winger with rubbish crossing and a good right foot would be ideal. The reality is sometime different. This is the position that requires some tweaking. The left winger is there is space bombing up the left wing he cuts inside and the cross goes over. The other thing that happens is that after bombing up the left wing he passes the ball back to the left back. I may play around with this one to see the best setting. I want him ideally to bang in the cross from the right midfielder but that happens less than often.

Striker

http://www.fmscreenies.com/images/vbmr1rgvozzvj9p1d6h0.jpg

Amazingly enough 32 year old Michael Owen worked a treat in this position for England. Obviously The striker needs to have a little bit of class and if he can hold up the ball then that is a bonus. I have not tried hold up the ball on him but what I have found is that when he gets the ball sometimes there are 4 players around him. What should happen is that he plays the ball onto the winger who is in space and either crosses or has a go (depending on which winger). This does happen a lot and is good to watch.

And variants

The variants apart from pushing up the winger are obviously to change the right wingers instructions and give it to the left. This would then give you 2 crossing wingers or give the right winger the left instructions and see what happens.

If things aren't going to plan then I tend to try 2 other formations that are similar in style.

4-1-4-1

Push one of the DMC to MC and give him these instructions.

http://www.fmscreenies.com/images/puhxowtbbz8vq1b7osx.jpg

This will take him away from the defensive duties and helps with creating the attack.

The MC then becomes the AMC and pushes him up the field more.

The AMC gets a free role to help with the attack.

4-1-3-2

http://www.fmscreenies.com/images/s4e4hbfyadwmfxexc2c.jpg

This is a new formation with most of the ideas. Still has the destroyer but one of the DMCs has been pushed onto SC with slightly different settings to the other SC.

This tactic is in the early stages of testing but it is the principle that I am promoting. A couple of other tweaks would be to implement the other TT&F specialist settings but I have not got round to it.
