Oldham Evening Chronicle: Oldham Climb Further Up After Another Away Win

Today's victory over Wrexham moves Oldham up to 4th in the league, a point off an automatic promotion spot and 3 behind leaders Sheffield Wednesday. Oldham were forced into a couple of late changes before the game, both Dean Holden and David Eyres not fit enough to start after picking up knocks. Ernie Cooksey and debutant Joanthan Perry came in. The Latics got the first chance on 14 minutes, O'Halloran flicked the ball to Killen who fired just wide. Vernon went close with a volley but his shot went over the bar. Killen had a chance superbly saved by veteran keeper Andy Dibble. Just before the break Oldham took the lead, O'Halloran ran forward down the wing and crossed a perfect ball to Vernon who couldn't miss. Vernon had tyhe chance to increase the lead after the break but his shot went just wide. Wrexham then had their first chance of the match, Pogliacomi saving well from on fire Sam. Dibble the ex-Manchester City keeper was being taunted lots by the Oldham fans in the second half much to the delight of Dibble. Wrexham went close again as Palmer hit his shot just over, he had replaced Chris Armstrong who didn't look too impressed to have gone off. On 66 minutes Oldham made the game more secure, an improving Scott Vernon got his second double in the last two games, this one also came from O'Halloran and Scott was quickest to react. McAlister made a triple substitution, Perry, Killen and O'Halloran came off and Holden, Shandran and Robson took their places. Moments later Vernon nearly had his hattrick, he cheekily tried to lob Dibble but he just clung onto it. Dibble again denied Vernon his hattrick parrying his volley. In injury time Wrexham should have had a consellation goal but Palmer again put it wide. Oldham dealt with any other pressure well and secured their third league win in a row.

Manager's Comments: We have really improved this past month, we are now a more consistent team, playing nice attractive football. We always look like winning at the moment. I am very pleased with the progression Scott Vernon has made, his performances of late deserve a special mention but it's the team as a whole that has got us this far and hopefully they can keep this form going. It's very encouraging so far.

Simon Pope: Anthony Shandran picked up a calf strain during the game and will be out for a week.

Again we made a profit and are now just in the black excluding loans. However the wage bill has increased dramatically this month. We had assurances from you that it would go down not so high. We will be restricting wages from you until this figure is redcued to £21,000. We are still uncertain financially, the squad is getting rather big so you should be able to sell some players. We'll have a big payout for the Newcastle match so I expect us to becoming more financially secure.

The Oldham fans respond to my praise of Scott Vernon by writing letters to the local paper. In their view a few months back he wouldn't have even entered their thoughts in terms of a first team place but he has proved in his recent perfomances he is very capable at this level. They are delighted at his consistency and the improvment to his game this season alone.

Brighton & Hove Albion Report

Brighton like to play a 4-4-2 formation. They have a strong side and Daniel Marney is a potent threat in a pacey attacking line.

Their key players are:

Danny Cullip, one of the best centre backs in the lower leagues, at 27 he has many years ahead of him in football. Not many players get past this strong tackling lad. Used to play for Brentford, Fulham and Oxford United.

Kerry Mayo, a 26 year old left back. Is the clubs throw in specialist and also good from set pieces, likes to get forward and cause problems when possible. Made nearly 250 appearances for Brighton now the only club he has played for.

Gary Hart, a 27 year old striker. Has been know to be a threat upfront but this season has only managed one goal. He is very pacey and strong and is a decent finisher.

They have brought in 4 players so far this season:

Georgi Kinkladze: Free Transfer

Steve Evans: Brentford £50k

Steve Robinson: Swindon Town £16k

Andy Hay: Whitley Bay £28k

Jon Ostemobor has come in on loan from Liverpool. He will be out for the game though with a dislocated shoulder.

Two players have left:

Jake Robinson: West Bromwich Albion £24k

Michel Kuipers: NEC £95k

Oldham Squad (18 Players): Ghent, Pogliacomi, Clegg, Holden, Wicks, Haining, O'Hanlon, Perry, Gibson, Robson, Cooksey, Eyre, O'Halloran, Eyres, Sisson, Fleming, Killen, Vernon

Oldham Evening Chronicle: Oldham Cruise Into Promotion Spot

This was Oldham's fourth straight league victory which moved them upto 2nd place in the league. The game was soured for promotion-looking Oldham when Scott Vernon was sent off late in the game. Oldham's highest gate of the season saw Oldham dominate early proceedings and take the lead on 6 minutes. Good passing from the Latics, Killen found some space and received the ball from O'Halloran, he unselfishly headed the ball down for Vernon who tucked the ball in the goal to score his fifth goal in three games. On the quarter hour mark it was 2-0, Holden played a lovely ball to Vernon, he noticed Killen's run and gave the ball to him quickly, he raced past the defence and cooly finished past Roberts. Ex Man City favourite Georgi Kinkladze was stretchered off with an injury. A major blow to Brighton's chances. They nearly pulled one back, Watson hit the side netting from a free kick. Oldham went into the break two goals up. A couple of players were tired so changes were made. Killen and Haining came off to be replaced by Fleming and Perry. Into the second half the game became stuck in midfield much to Oldham's delight. Leon Knight nearly scored but Dean Holden who had a super game made a super last-ditch tackle to deny him. Knight went close again but forced his shot wide of goal. The game was peetering out when Vernon caught Cullip with a needless elbow, the referee was quickly on the scene to calm the brawl that was taking place and red carded Vernon. Brighton then managed to get a consellation goal from Wilkinson but it wasn't enough. Oldham go into the International break level on points with leaders Sheffield Wednesday.

Manager's Comments: I'm very happy with the performance and result today. We played very well against a tough Brighton side. I never thought we would be in the automatic promotion spots, we're playing better than I expected. I just hope it can continue. On the sending-off of Vernon I thought it was harsh, there was no intent or malice. I've appealled to the FA to get his ban revoked. We'll see how it goes. Hopefully we can continue this fine form after the break.

Simon Pope tells me that David Eyres is in need of a rest after today's game as he is showing signs of fatigue.

I warn Scott Vernon of his future conduct after getting sent-off, he feels the warning was harsh though.

Oldham Evening Chronicle: Barnsley dominated the first-half, they were unlucky for the match still being goalless. Chris Grange and the woodwork helped it stay level. Oldham had one or two chances but they were saved well. Shortly after the break Barnsley's pressure eventually telled. A corner came in and King climbed above Chris Lever and headed across goal into the net. Oldham got more of the possesion as Barnsley defended their lead. Possession wasn't turning into chances however and Barnsley looked more than comfortable, they could have increased their lead and killed the game off. Eventually Oldham's possesion eventually turned into chances and minutes before the end rescued a point, Matthew Barlow had a simple chance which he finished well. Oldham stay mid-table in the youth league.

Oldham Evening Chronicle: Oldham were well and truly hammered tonight against an impressive Grimsby reserve side. Early on Grimsby took the lead through their player/manager Paul Groves. Oldham then got into the game more and had a few chances but it was Grimsby who doubled their lead, Boulding beating the offside trap to finish calmly. After half time Grimsby made it three as Boulding found Mansaram free in the box, Oldham's defence was falling apart. It was soon four, Boulding managed to break free of a hopeless defence after a super ball from Anderson. Midway through the second half Oldham started the comeback with a goal from sub Spencer Whelan but couldn't add anymore. Grimsby had taught Oldham a lesson in football. It was a disappointing comeback for Matty Appleby in midfield, he can only improve.

Scott Vernon has been disciplined further after his sending off last weekend. He has been banned for a further 2 matches meaning he'll miss the Hartlepool league game and the Carling Cup trip to Newcastle. A major blow.

England played their final group game to qualify for Euro 2004. They were up against Turkey. The winner would qualify automatically for the Championships. Even if England drew it would be ok for them to go through. Turkey took the lead though in the second minute through Nihat. England threw everything but couldn't manage to equalise. Turkey go through, England go into the play offs.

Rushden & Diamonds Report

Rushden's team is capable and their attack is strong and quick.

Their key players are:

Paul Underwood, a 30 year old left back/wing back. He is a solid defender who tackles well, he isn't knocked off the ball easily. He has good passing and control helping him get it out of defence. A player who can change defence into attack instantly.

Onandi Lowe, a 28 year old Jamiaican striker. One of the best in the league, currently has 10 goals in 13 appearances.

Oldham Squad (17 Players): Ghent, Pogliacomi, Clegg, Holden, Wicks, Haining, Perry, Gibson, Robson, Cooksey, Eyre, O'Halloran, Eyres, Griffin, Fleming, Killen, Shandran

Oldham Evening Chronicle: Oldham Given A Footballing Lesson

Oldham slip down to 6th in the league after Onandi Lowe helped himself to a 8 minute hattrick in a mad second half spell. In truth Oldham were never in it and Rushden totally dominated. Oldham do have problems playing games after a long spell without a game, the same happened at Sheffield Wednesday earlier in the season. As early as the first minute Rushden should have been ahead but Lowe shot poorly and Pogliacomi easily gathered. Minutes later Bell went close. Oldham then had a long range chance through Eyre which was saved well. The game settled down a bit. Mills for Rushden had a couple of good chances but Pogliacomi stood firm. It stayed 0-0 at half time. Rushden were making all the chances and play. Oldham were getting the ball forward but the attack was ineffective at best. Vernon was being sorely missed. Kitson had come on for Darby who almost immediately had a chance to score but finished tamely. Shortly after Rushden finally took the lead, Burgess played the ball past Haining and found Lowe who ran past the defence and tapped home a simple finish. Holden was replaced by Perry straight after the goal and Oldham looked to force the game on Rushden more, O'Halloran had a very good corner scrambled away and Gibson shot just over. Lowe then made it 2-0 when he headed home a Kitson cross after good work from Sambrook. Before the Rushden fans had sat on their seats again it was 3 and that man Lowe he was enialating Oldham. Hall spotted Pogliacomi off his line and crossed to an unmarked Lowe to score the easiest of the 3 goals. Rushden continued to press forward in search of more goals, Oldham were being ripped apart. Youngster Adam Griffin replaced the largely ineffective and tired David Eyres and later on Craig Fleming replaced the shocking Killen. Nothing Oldham did could stop the Rushden onslaught but thanks to a bit of luck the scores stayed the same. Oldham had been well beaten. Next up is Grimsby Town away in the LDV Vans Trophy.

Manager's Comments: Today we were truly poor. We virtually spent the whole 90 minutes defending. I'm not going to dwell on this result. I know we are better than this. The next game against Grimsby I expect to be trying out some of the reserves to see if they can hack it at first team level. I'm all for the LDV Vans Trophy but there are many important games to comeand this will have to take a lesser importance in terms of actually going far in the competition. It will be a chance to try out my youngsters and untried players.

Rotherham United again come in for Dean Holden. They offer £26k which is firmly rejected. I do however offer Michael Clegg, Matty Appleby and Danny Boshell to other clubs in hope I can sell them and reduce my wage bill. I don't want to lose Clegg but his wages are too steep and I can replace his position. He is very unhappy at me for this but it's something as manager I have to do to keep the baord sweet.

Gillingham sack Andy Hessenthaler is manager of the club and are looking for a new manager.

Oldham Evening Chronicle: Another defeat for the youths as Huckett scored the only goal of the game from the penalty spot in the seocnd half to win it for Grimsby. They were fully deserving of the win after not conceeding a chance let alone a goal. Grimsby had all the chances in the first half but couldn't put any in, in the second half Lever pushed Ward over in the penalty box, a penalty was given and Huckett stepped up and scored with ease. Grimsby then set about defending their lead which they did superbly and went on to win.

MOM: Danny Boshell

Oldham Evening Chronicle: The Latics reserves were missing a few players today due to call ups to the squad for tomorrow's first team match. Burnley punished them for this by scoring four without reply. It was a game devoid of chances, Bunley only managed five to Oldham's one. Within 20 minutes of the start Jones, Hindle and Preston had all scored to put Burnley three up. Shortly after the break Grimes made it four as Burnley cruised to victory without even breaking sweat. The form of both the reserves and youth side has been a little concerning of late, the performances are not good enough. Even though a few players were missing today the team was still very experienced with the Sheridan brothers and Appleby all in the midfield.

Grimsby Town Report

Grimsby Town manager Paul Groves nromally plays a 4-4-2 formation. They have a strong side and Michael Boulding is a potent threat in a pacey attacking line.

Their key players are:

Darren Barnard, a 31 year old welsh international left wing back. Coming towards the end of his career now but is still useful at this level, he is a good defender and when allowed can get down the field and cross superbly.

Stuart Campbell, a 25 year old scottish midfielder. Superb at taking on players and passing around the field. He can get back and defend if needed, he works hard for the team to get a result.

They have brought three players in permanently in Rob Ullathorne on a free, Peter Weatherson from Morton for £1k and former Oldham trialist Matt Carbon also for a free.

They have brought 3 players in on loan. John Oster (Sunderland), Elvis Hammond (Fulham), Chris Doig (Nottingham Forest)

Only Chris Bolder has left on loan from Grimsby, he is at Cambridge United.

Oldham Squad (21 Players): Ghent, Pogliacomi, Clegg, Holden, Whelan, Cassidy, Wicks, Haining, O'Hanlon, Perry, Gibson, Robson, Cooksey, Eyre, O'Halloran, Eyres, Griffin, Sisson, Fleming, Killen, Shandran

Oldham Evening Chronicle: Massacre at Cleethorpes

Ian McAlister decided tonight would be a good night to try out his fringe players and up and coming stars but perhaps may have felt differently at the end. Oldham were slaughtered tonight. Considering the scoreline at the end it took until the 17th minute for Grimsby to go ahead and Weatherson managed to score his first of what would be four for him in total at the end. A couple of minutes later it was two, Hamilton thundered a volley in from the edge of the area from a corner, a superb goal. Oldham were being totally ripped apart, Weatherson scored his second after 34 minutes and quickly followed that up by putting in his hattrick goal. The few Oldham fans that had made it for the game looked quite shell-shocked at how easily the opposition were ripping Oldham apart. Oldham made two substitutions at that point, dragging Sisson and Robson off, the more experienced players Holden and O'Halloran came on. Unfortunately the scoring wasn't over for Grimsby, just before half time Boulding managed to shake loose O'Hanlon and fired past a hopeless Ghent. The half time whistle blew. Oldham 5-0 down, game and tie over. Maybe Oldham would come out after the break and give Grimsby a game. No matter what Oldham did, they couldn't get the ball forward and were pushed back again, Grimsby made it six and Boulding got his second, all too easy. Ghent was replaced by Pogliacomi to the delight of the Oldham fans that were left. On 71 minutes Weatherson completed the rout by grabbing his fourth goal, Grimsby were in dream land. It was turning into a big nightmare for Oldham. Oldham then had two chances near the end of the game, Fleming fired well over after good play by Killen and Killen himself had a chance but his header lacked any power and was easily saved. The final whistle went, Grimsby celebrated, Oldham fell flat on their backs. The future of Latics were playing tonight and on this showing the future certainly doesn't look bright. The team included a few of McAlister's signings and they failed to show any signs of becoming good players. Oldham might be riding high at the moment but the club and McAlister still has a big job on his hands to move this club forward in the future, at the moment the club looks more likely to slip back than to progress.

Manager's Comments: Tonight was an absolute shocker, I'm sorry to all the fans that came over to support us tonight. It was a good night to try out new players as the fixture list is getting a bit crowded. They tried their best but for some it was their first taste of first team football. This will be part of their learning curve and I'm sure the lads will become better players because of this. To look at the positives we are in the play offs at the moment and have a massive cup tie against Newcastle United in a weeks time. This result is a setback to my plans but it will certainly be a blip.

Oldham Evening Chronicle: Back On Track

Oldham responded from two successive defeats to put in a dominant performance against the leagues bottom club. It was youngster Craig Fleming making his full debut for the first team who scored both goals to give Oldham the three points. The early exchanges were scrappy. O'Halloran had the first chance, he was played in by Perry but he just hit the shot wide. It wasn't long until Oldham did take the lead, excellent football between Wicks and Eyre found Gibson, he crossed into the box and Fleming capped his debut with an excellent volley. O'Halloran had a shot parried and Eyre nearly made it two before half time but his long shot was well saved. After the break Killen had a chance but he dithered on the ball too much and Westwood managed to clear the danger, seconds later O'Halloran should have scored from a half-volley but failed to. Oldham had plenty of chances to secure the game but it wasn't signed, sealed and delivered until injury time. O'Halloran sent in a corner and Fleming rose up above the defence and sent an unstoppable header into the goal. Game over. Oldham rise a place to 5th in the league only two points from being top of the league. Next up is the big Carling Cup tie against Newcastle United.

Manager's Comments: It's good to be back to winning ways again, Hartlepool were never in the game, we had plenty of chances to finish them off but their keeper was in inspired form. It's great to see Fleming banging in the goals, he was playing in the youth team last season and now he has progressed to the first team. He is definately one for the future. It was great to see that overall we improved our performance and got something from the game, the defence was strong and kept a clean sheet which is important when you've let in ten in just one week.

Brighton & Hove Albion sign Swindon Town midfielder Stefani Miglioranzi for £40k.

Ther has been talk of Swindon Town putting in a good run that could see them emerge as surprise promotion contenders of Divsion Two. After todays 4-0 win against Notts County they have amassed their fifth win in a row, a divisional record.

Oldham Evening Chronicle: The youth side earned a point today against a much fancied Bolton side. Bolton started the brighter but the first half was pretty even in terms of possesion and chances. It was Bolton that took the lead when Vaz Te found Gibb in acres of space to tap in a simple goal. Just before the break the scores were level, Walker had managed to wriggle free with some nice turns and dummies and fired the ball home. Oldham were the brighter team early in the second half but were soon put under immense pressure from Bolton, they could have had a couple but Grange was equal to anything thrown at him.

Oldham Evening Chronicle: Eyresy Announces Retirement

A bombshell was announced today at Boundary Park. Veteran winger David Eyres has announced it is planned that he will step down as a player of Oldham Athletic at the end of this season. In a statement to the press he explained, "In the past few weeks I have been thinking about my future, my contract is up at the end of this season and I'm not getting any younger so I've decided to retire from playing football when my contract runs out. It has been a tough decision for me to come to but I feel that it is for the best, I want to go out while I'm still in my prime, I don't want to end up as a liability to the club. I am still committed to the club 110% and I will work as hard as I possibly can. The club has a chance of promotion and it is my goal to help the club achieve promotion this term after last seasons exit in the play offs. It will end my career nicely and I will be extremely satisfied to know I was a part of the team that took Oldham up to Division One, the job I was brought here to do." The news has brought shock and sadness to the fans of the Latics that we spoke to on the street, the points said were that he is a loyal and very professional player who always gives his all for the club and that they hope he changes his mind. David who turns forty on the 26th February will hopefully be the first player forty and over the feature in a game, that game would be away against his first professional club Blackpool, a club dear to his heart and a fitting game for him to appear in. Manager Ian McAlister had a few words to say on the announcement, "I am gutted that David has decided to retire at the end of the season but I also understand his point of view, he has been thinking about it for weeks now and he has discussed the matter with me during that time. I have tried to persuade him that he can still continue into next season, he is a key member of this squad and one of the first names in the first eleven. He is a model professional and the young players here look up to him. He has achieved lots in his time in football, promotions and trips to wembley and also being named in the best Preston team of all time, quite an honour considering the famous players that have played for them. He is still a Latics player though and I am confident he will put in his all for the team."

Oldham Evening Chronicle: Two goals in injury time rescued a dramatic point for the Blues. Barnsley started off brilliantly, taking the lead after 4 minutes through Neil. The rest of the half was fairly even but Barnsley were merited their lead. Oldham pushed forward in the second half and were unlucky to equalise sooner, Neil thought he had sealed the game for Barnsley on 80 minutes. Oldham had other ideas, with 5 minutes of injury time to be played Darren Sheridan was first to score with a fantastic strike, Barnsley paniced and Oldham threw everyone forward. Tierney played a superb ball of Hampson, he managed to find Armstong, he turned, shot and saw the ball go in, the fans that were there jumped up in astonishment, Oldham had rescued a point just in time.

Oldham Evening Chronicle: Oldham So Close To Completing Shock

This proves how cruel football can be, twenty seconds to go Oldham are a goal infront who don't you want to have a shot at goal? Yes Mr. Alan Shearer. Oldham were so close to causing a massive upset. Things weren't going to go all Newcastle's way as early on Oldham stamped their intention to attack when allowed. John Eyre struck a shot a long way out, left Given grounded but went just wide. The travelling thousands were sensing a shock. Newcastle soon came at Oldham and caused some problems but Pogliacomi dealt with anything that came it him. John Eyre again went close, beating the Newcastle defence but not Given. Newcastle again pressurised the Latics in search of the opening goal, Shearer went close. Before half time Oldham had a fabulous chance to score, Vernon raced clear of the defence, he was one on one with Given and Killen was unmarked to his right, he choose to shoot and dragged his shot just wide, Killen felt that the ball should have gone to him but Oldham had found the Newcastle defence wanting. The half time whistle went, the players left to a huge roar from the Oldham fans. Newcastle put more pressur on the Latics in the second half but couldn't really force a clear cut chance. Midway through the half Vernon again found himself clear, this time he was on his own, he noticed Given off his line and chipped him from 20 yards out and into the net. The Oldham fans went crazy and the Oldham players went celebrating with them, a shock was on the cards. Oldham made a couple of substitutions to help nulify anything Newcastle could throw. Perry and Eyre made way for Holden and Cooksey. Vernon then had another chance to score, beat Given but beat the post as well. After that it was all Newcastle, 5 minutes left to hang on. Shots were raining down on Pogliacomi. Robson replaced Killen. Oldham thought they had pulled off the shock until Shearer swivelled past Clegg and squeezed his shot past Pogliacomi. Oldham players fell to the floor with exhaustion and disappointment. Could Oldham go on and eventually win the game? No. Newcastle then slaughtered and demoralised Oldham with Ameobi grabbing two goals and Shearer also grabbing another for himself. A superb battling performance from the boys tonight which came so close to shocking one of the best sides in the country. 4-1 doesn't fit this game, Oldham deserved more than that and they nearly did. Enough of the "What If's?" though the league continues on saturday and the team need to pick themselves up and maintain their super league form.

Manager's Comments: What can I say? We were really unlucky not to be through to the next round. We fought excellently and gave them a game. The defending tonight was quality and when we had a chance to break we did and caused them a lot of problems. Vernon's goal could have graced any Premiership game. You just don't let Shearer get the ball ever, he is deadly. We'll be ready for the Tranmere game on saturday, the boys will be fine. The game has raised a lot of money for the club however which is greatly needed at the moment.

Oldham Evening Chronicle: Latics Overwhelmed by Dominant Trannies

Oldham put in their worst performance of the season to date as Tranmere greatfully routed them. At the start of the day it was predicted to be a close, hard fought game against two sides looking for automatic promotion but you'd be mistaken if you saw two promotion capable sides. Perhaps Oldham suffered from their extended cup match in midweek, the players looked shattered and some were forced off with injuries. The game started off quietly with the game stuck in midfield. Midway through the half Scott Vernon had to come off with an injury, Craig Fleming replaced him. Tranmere grew in confidence and started to find ways past the Oldham defence, a short time later their hard work showed and the opening goal came. Sharps played a lovely ball over the defence, Harrison lached onto the pass and volleyed home past a startled Pogliacomi. More bad news as Chris Killen who had been struggling with a knock following an earlier challenge also came off, Perry came on for him and into an unfamiliar attacking role. The scores stayed the same at half time, Oldham still in it but with no real attacking options the task looked impossible. To make matters worse Dean Holden also came off with a knock and Cassidy took his place, an altering of the formation was made. Right after the restart Tranmere scored, Roberts was found in a good position, he turned into space and finished superbly from 20 yards out. Soon after Tranmere were at it again, Taylor dispossesed Perry then managed to wriggle his way past the defence and again finished well. As the half went on Oldham were allowed to play more and looking threatening but no chances could be made as Oldham's lack of firepower was telling. To compound the misery it was four just before the end, substitute Dagnall managed to get inbetween two defenders to poke home a corner to complete the rout. Many Oldham fans had already left at this point. It was a very disappointing display from the lads, probably a hangover from the Newcastle match but the conceeding of goals is becoming more and more in frequency which is worrying.

Manager's Comments: We didn't play well at all today to be fair, we couldn't get any fluency going at all, we got injuries during the game which didn't help, hopefully they won't be too bad. It was disappointing to lose the way we did, we should be giving every team in this league a tough game, we just didn't want it enough and gave in too easily.

Simon Pope After the game I ran some tests on the players, Les Pogliacomi and Scott Vernon are both out for a day only with minor knocks, could be doubtful for wednesday's game. David Eyres is in need of a rest. I don't think he can last a full 90 minutes for games anymore.

Chesterfield beat Stockport County 3-0 to continue their unbeaten record which is now eight games. They were expected to be relegation candidates but are currently top of the league and cruising.

I have a meeting with them both to explain the reasons. They are disappointed and upset to be leaving, I offer to pay up their contracts in full. So off Darren Sheridan and John Sheridan go, I wish them all the best.

I offer Matty Appleby and Danny Boshell to other clubs as they have had interest from other clubs. I'm hoping that there might be a club ready to sign them.

That's lightened the wage bill a bit but there is still a lot to be made up yet.

Oldham Evening Chronicle: Oldham Slump Continues

Another big defeat for the Latics tonight as their promotion hopes take a blow. The once tight defence is leaking goals in by the minute as the goals dry up at the other end. It didn't take Peterbrough long to take the lead, just under three minutes McKenzie was found inacres of space and he scored with a fantastic volley. It was virtually all over a few mniutes later, Dean Holden saw red as the two teams prepared for a Peterborough corner, he kicked out at Gill and the referee was quick on hand to send Holden off, exactly not what Oldham needed. There was still fight in the side and nearly equalised, only a superb save from Tyler denied Vernon. Peterborough were still the side on top, creating some good chances, Oldham couldn't really get hold of the ball and the front two of Peterborough looked very impressive. Just before the break disaster struck Oldham again. A Newton volley deflected off Wicks and past the keeper and into the net. During the break McAlister finally changed the formation, he brought off the ineffective Killen and brought on Jonathan Perry to bring the defensive line back to 4 players, O'Halloran was moved up to the front line. Oldham came out full of passion in the second half, both Vernon and Cooksey were booked for an arguement with the referee, perhaps a little silly but at least they showed they cared about the performance. Unfortunately Oldham's defending had turned extremely dodgy, letting Peterborough run at them in space and sure enough Newton got his second of the game after Gill played him in the penalty box. Gill himself made it four after a mistake from Perry. The boo's rose around Boundary Park and fans started to leave. O'Halloran skied a chance to pull a goal back, it was easier to score. Amazingly Peterborough managed to hit the woodwork four times before the game ended, it could have been so much worse for Oldham. The team lost their discipline as four players recieved yellow cards to add to Holden's red card. Luckily Oldham now have over a fortnight to work on their game before their next league match which will be again former Oldham boss Iain Dowie's Wycombe Wanderers. Next up though see Oldham start their FA Cup campaign against Doc. Martin's Premier League side Dover Athletic, the side from Kent will want to cause a huge upset and if Oldham's recent form is to go by it is definately possible. Oldham Beware!

Manager's Comments: The defending tonight was shocking, really shocking. We're letting teams dominate us at home, something I will not accept. Dean's sending off wasn't helpful but we're all under pressure at the moment but we need to keep our cool and fight through this little setback in the season. The lads will be in training tomorrow, working on our defensive play, it's an area of weakness at the moment. We also have to be aware of our next opponents Dover, it's a game we should win no questions asked but Dover will want to give us a difficult task. I will be on at the lads that we need to be professional and get the job done.

Behind the scenes I call Dean Holden into my office..

Ian McAlister: Hi Dean, I think you know why you are here. You let the team down tonight getting sent off, you let yourself down too. We are a better team with you in that defence not you sitting in the dressing room for most of the game. I'm going to fine you a weeks wages, it's something I'm not prepared to tolerate, we need to be disciplined at all times.

Dean Holden: Ok boss I accept that I deserve this fine. I'm gutted myself for what has happened tonight. It won't happen again

Ian McAlister: Ok good to hear, make sure it doesn't/ You're suspended for the Dover game on saturday and you could be suspended further depending on a meeting on the 12th so I want you to do some hard training during this break as you could be out for a month. I want you back sharper than ever.

Oldham equalised close to the end of the half with the goal of the game, Paul Armstong hitting a cracker into the top corner from around 25 yards out. Oldham Evening Chronicle: Oldham Hammer Minnows

Oldham bounce back from their recent league hammerings to enforce a hammering of their own on lowly Dover. The potential banana skin has been cleared and Oldham progress into the second round. Oldham scored as early as the fourth mninute, Chris Killen found some room and ran towards the box, he chipped the ball and Scott Vernon was on hand with a diving header into the net to notch his tenth goal of the season, not not for a player in this his first full professional season. The second Oldham goal was a carbon copy of the first with Killen crossing and an unmarked Vernon scored his second diving header. Oldham teased Dover, passing the ball around and waiting for the right opportunity, Eyre found a gap and run into it, he struck the ball hard, Postma did well to parry it but there was Vernon again to tap in a simple goal to complete his first hattrick for the club. Oldham pounded the Dover goal but the finishes weren't there. Dover were lucky it was only three at half time. During the break Oldham made all their substitutions. On came Boshell, O'Hanlon and Fleming to replace Gibson, Clegg and Killen. It didn't take long for the scores to increase as substitute Fleming tapped in a rebound following a shot from John Eyre. For a while after Oldham couldn't get through a stubborn Dover defence but they kept possession and never let Dover gert any time on the ball, the short passing style wasn't working as well now so Oldham resorted to going more direct, this worked as Oldhama gainst started creating good chances. It took until the sixty-ninth minute to get another goal, that came from a John Eyre free kick which curled into the top corner, evading Postma. Boshell who may be out of the club shortly to cut down wages gave his manager a things to ponder about. He was passing the ball about superbly and even managed to have a few cracks at goal which were well saved. He did himself proud today. The whistle went, Oldham were through to the next round. Oldham had a total of 22 chances on goal, 21 of which were on target, Dover didn't manage a single chance which shows how dominant Oldham were. Now comes a break in the football for Internationals, a time to get the side prepared for the long haul and to try and achieve promotion.

Manager's Comments: We did a professional job today against Dover. After a difficult week when we have had to release two of the clubs most experienced players and the thrashings in the league we came out and we showed no mercy. Vernon was superb today, his first hattrick for the club and the first under my managership. Everyone impressed, even the players called up from the reserves, Danny Boshell had a fantastic game when he came on. During this break without fixtures the team will be working hard on the training ground so when we come back we'll be unstoppable.

Oldham Athletic recieve £12k for winning the FA Cup 1st Round Match.

Three more players join on trial today:

Paul Garvey (Ashton United)

Phil Denney (Ashton United)

Anthony Episcopo (Radcliffe Borough)

Carlos Roca is back from his loan spell at Telford United. He played 8 games, 7 as a substitute, scored 3 goals in that time and got an overall rating of 6.88

James Wills also had a look at Ashton United's young keeper Danny Trueman, he looks a promising keeper but maybe not good enough for Second Division Football.

Oldham Evening Chronicle: Another defeat for a rock bottom Latics side but a much improved performance. Perhaps should have got more from the game. Oldham had the perfect start as they went in front, young trialist Miller struck a sweet volley into the net after good play by Heald another trialist. Oldham were on top but Wigan did equalise before the break, Moore sped past Hall and finished well when clear. Minutes into the second half Moore got his second goal of the game, an excellent 25 yard shot. After this the game became very stretched, plenty of chances for either side but Oldham had the most and should have got a point out of this at least. A positive display though from the trialists, will have given the manager some thoughts about them.

I have a trial offer for Richard Gell accepted but rejections for Tommy Tyne and Marien ifura.

Millwall accept my offer to loan Cherno Samba, I await Cherno's decision.

After a disciplinary hearing following Dean Holden's sending off last week, the panel have increased his suspension by another two games. He will miss the games against Wycombe Wanderers and QPR.

In the press there was much praise for Patrick Vieira of Arsenal, he helped guide his side to a 4-2 victory against Southampton. Wolverhampton Wanderers striker Issac Okoronkwo also got a lot of praise after a sensational performance in the game against Newcastle United where Wolves won 2-1.

David Artell has joined the club on trial for a month after being released by Mansfield Town earlier this month.

Swansea City confirm to me that they don't want Danny Boshell as they feel they have better options in their current squad.

James Wills informs me he has heard good things about Mark Smith of Chesterfield, he does look good so I keep him scouted.

Oldham Evening Chronicle: A game the youths should have won today, they totally dominated Burnley. Oldham had all the chances but failed to convert them. Burnley created one half chance which went well wide. A disappointment considering the amount of the game they had and they chances they squandered but overall an impressive performance, something that has been lacking in the recent past.

James Wills has been watching Wimbledon midfielder Ben Harding in action in recent training sessions there and he is impressed by him and believes he could develop into a first team player here. I agree, he looks a good prospect.

Oldham Evening Chronicle: Oldham are now 4 points adrift at the bottom of the league after another defeat, this time to Stockport. It was another good performance from the lads but Stockport took their chances and Oldham didn't. The winner was scored on 17 minutes, Williams able to poke the ball home only yards out. Oldham were playing lovely football throughout which was pleasing to see and again the trialists did the side proud but unfortunately the killer touch failed Oldham once again.

Port Vale loan Sunderland youngster Paul Thirlwell for 3 months.

Promising reserve player Danny Hall landed awkwardly following a mistimed tackle and fractured his arm, he will be out for 3 weeks approximately.

England are going to Portugal to play in EURO 2004 as they increased thier 3-0 first leg lead by one goal. England sat back and let Ukraine come at them and saw off any danger, in the final minute Paul Scholes tucked away a penalty to send to send the travelling Barmy Army wild.
