Cantona?

Giggs?

Beckham?

D Edwards?

B Charlton?

slight bias?

Eric Cantona - Widely regarded as the patriarch of 'Beautiful Football' in Britian. Recognised by any true football fan as a gifted player. Legend.

Ryan Giggs - Most successful professional club player in British, if not world, history. Legend.

David Beckham - Probably the most recognised face of football in global terms. Ever. Legend.

Duncan Edwards - Arguably the most complete footballer in attitude and talent ever in the United Kingdom. Admired, and appraised as the best in the world by many of the world's greatest players of the period. Legend.

Sir Bobby Charlton - League Championship 1957, 1965, 1967. FA Cup Winner 1963. European Cup Winner 1968. Community Shield 1956, 1957, 1965, 1967. World Cup 1966. Legend.

Yes, all quite shocking choices for the term 'legend'. Of coure, only mentioned because of a disgraceful bias towards who they played for. What an absolute aberration. Their suggestion alone is based in no way on their achievements. I think airdrie, you should think about what you type, then reconsider if what you have written makes sense before you click "Submit Reply". WUM.

But anyway, I feel Pippo Inzaghi should be considered, he is the most prolific striker in European competition after all.

Puskas, Schmeichael, Platini, Lev Yashin, Gerd Muller, Carlos Alberto, Garrincha, Socrates, Dunga, Zico, Zoff, Cruijff, Romario, Jarzinho, Hagi....

List could go on and on and on. All of the above definitely would need a place in the side.

Can't believe no one has mentioned Puskas yet, or any of the Brazilian 70's side.

Hrrrmmmm HRHHHRMMMMM

Why i haven't seen Michael Laudrup more times in the above... So sad.

Look at i few quotes on Michael:

Quotes on Laudrup

* Romário: "The best player I have ever played with and the 4th best in the history of the game together with Zidane[15]."

* Raúl: "The best I have ever played with[16]."

* Zamorano: "Un genio!", "The reason why I make so many goals, is Laudrup."[17]

* Cruyff: "One of the most difficult players I have worked with. When he gives 80-90% he is still by far the best, but I want 100%, and he rarely does that."[18]

* Cruyff(After Real Madrid with Laudrup had won 5-0 over Cruyff's Barcelona):"When Michael plays like a dream, a magic illusion, determined to show his new team his extreme abilities, noone in the world comes anywhere near his level."[19]

* Maradona: "One of the greatest ever."

* Platini: "One of the biggest talents ever. The best in the world on the training pitch, but never used his talent to its full during matches.[20]

* Platini: "Michael had everything except for one thing: he wasn't selfish enough."[7]

* Guardiola: "The best player in the world, I can't believe he hasn't won the title as best player."

* Beckenbauer: "Pelé was the best in the 60's, Cruyff in the 70's, Maradona in the 80's and Laudrup in the 90's."[21]

* Roberto Galia:"I have played against Maradona, Platini and Baggio. But the player I saw do the most indescribable things was Michael Laudrup"[22]

* Clemente:"To me, Michael Laudrup is the most genius player the world has ever seen. He will always be my numero uno. Always."[23]

* Bakero:"Noone has given the club [barcelona] as much inspiration as Michael. We all look up to him. It is a privilige to have your day enriched by a genius."[24]

I don't think it is reasonable to make a legends club, as there are so many greats, present and former... I think there should be a Legends league or something, here's what I think:

GK - Lev Yashin (22.10.1929. actually Jašin, russian, best goalie ever), Iker Casillas (Best goalie now) and Dino Zoff (28.2.1942. italian, great), GL Buffon, Gordon Banks (20. 9. 1937. '66 World Champ english gk, had quite a few impressive records), Antonio Carbajal (7. 6. 1929. Mexican. Quick, flexible and tall. From '50 to '66 played on 5 World Cups), Jose Luis Chilavert (everybody knows him :) '97 World best goalie and S. American best player), Giampiero Combi (18.12.1902. thought to be the best italian goalie until the great Zoff), Pat Jennings (12.6.1945. Played in the english national team 119 times, played over 1000 pro games and scored one goal from his penalty box), Thomas Ravelli (13.8.1959. swedish, 143 games in the national team, world record at the time), Peter Schmeichel, Peter Shilton (18.9.1949. conceded only 80 in 125 games in english national), Neville Southall (16.9.1958. Thought to be one of the best goalies of his time and named so in 1985), Andoni Zubizarreta (23.10.1961. Spanish goalie record with over 100 games, grown from the famous Athletic Bilbao basque goalies school)+lots of current stars like cech, van der sar, etc.

That's it for goalies

Def - Franz Beckenbauer (LB, super attack-minded back), Luigi Allemandi (18.11.1903. Quick Italian full back), Manuel Amoros (1.2.1961. Both sided full back in the famous 80's french squad), Franco Baresi (8.5.1960, started out as a AMC, later on somewhere in defence, not sure where excactly), Paul Breitner (5.9.1951. German, LB, sadly left in Beckenbauer's shadow in 70's, but he was great, too), Johnny Carey (23.2.1919. N.Irish. Best utility player ever, anywhere in defence and midfield, wings and even !goalie! if needed :)), Hector Chumpitaz (12.4.1944. Strong, dominating, determined and spirited Peruvian CD)

Domingos (Domingos Antonio da Guia, 19.11.1912. CD, teammates have said they had seen no-one who reads the game as good as he does, Brazilian key player in '38 WC), Duncan Edwards (1.10.1936. A Busby' Boys giant, and really a giant, strong and big, he could destroy the opponents game and create chances himself. Sometimes it seemed that he played alone. A brilliant player who died at age 22 in the famous München plane accident), Giacinto Facchetti (18.7.1942. Italian attacking LB, who started out as a striker. Scored 60 goals from LB position, 10 of them in 65/66 season. Very good at defense, too), Tommy Gemmell (16.10.1943. Scottish, Very tall CD and altough sometimes a bit clumsy, he was great at tackling and unbeatable at heading, also scored alot of important goals), John Greig (11.9.1942. Tireless scottish CD and DMC, who played 496 professional games for Rangers and was named the best player of '66), Gerhard Hanappi (9.7.1929. Austrian, another great utility player, who could play as a winger, striker and even as a full back), Eddie Hapgood (27.9.1908. Small LB, but solid as a rock, played for England 43 times, won 5 league titles and two FA Cups with Arsenal. Famous for playing on with a totally smashed nose after an opponent hit him with his elbow at the "Battle of Highbury"), Ernst Happel (29.6.1925. Famous and feared Austrian CD with also a strong shot, once scored a hattrick against R. Madrid from free-kicks and a pen), Paolo Maldini, Lothar Matthäus, Roberto Carlos, Cafu, José Nasazzi (24.5.1901. Urugayan RB, who led the team to '24 & '28 Olympic and '30 World Cup gold medals. He was a commanding force and really tireless in the back, which earned him the nicknames marshal and machine), Daniel Pasarella (25.5.1953, Argentine attacking full-back, captain of the winning '78 WC team. Great at dribbling and crossing), Roberto Rivelino (1.1.1946. Brazilian WBL, later MC. Altough a bit slow, he had great technique and was the Beckham of his time with his "banana-swerved" free-kicks and corners), José Emilio Santamaria (31.7.1929. The Uruguayan ruthless CD, who played in the successful R. Madrid alongside Puškas, Di Stefano and Gento), Djalma Santos (27.2.1929. Brazilian defensive RB, who was the most important defensive player in '58, '62 and unsuccessful '66. First brazilian to reach 100 games for the national team. Also played in the World team against England for their association's 100th birthday in 1963), Nilton Santos (16.5.1927. Attacking Brazilian LB, and although almost as good as, not related to Djalma Santos), Marco Tardelli (24.9.1954. Italian CD/DMC. Great work rate that stands out from his other good abilities), Alessandro Nesta and of course the stars of today: Puyol, Ferdinand, Terry etc

Gotta have Lev Yashin as GK for sure. The archetype for the present day GK! The GK award is named after him. And Duncan Edwards isn't a bad choice either - if only we got to see his career in full. Giggs, Beckham I don't think deserve to be here though - there are others who are better than them in their positions. They are successful yes, but not worthy of legend status compared to the other possibles (and this is from a MUFC fan). Of course this is looking at a top 22, they would be there for sure if I was looking at a top 50 or 60.

Need to make sure the greats of yesteryear aren't forgotten, most of them already brought up - the Mighty Magyars of the '50s, the Italian teams of the '30s etc, Real's team of the '50-'60s etc.

Midfielders-Diego Maradona (AMC & FC), Stanley Matthews (1.2.1915. English, an AMR who played from 1932 to 1965, when he was sent away on Stoke's Victoria Ground by stars like Di Stefano, Puškas, Jašin etc. He was the most feared English right wing even at the age of 51 because of his quickness and dribbling skills, he was the Cristiano Ronaldo of mid 20th century), Cristiano Ronaldo dos Santos Aveiro (even at the age of 24 he is already thought to be one of the best that has ever walked on Earth), Amancio (Amancio Amaro Varela 12.10.1939. Spanish MC/AMC/(A)MR. He was a brilliant player with slick technique and acceleration. With R. Madrid a ten-time Spanish league winner and was selected into the World Team to play against Brazil in '68), Amarildo (Amarildo Tavares Silveira 29.6.1939. AMC, played in '62 World Cup after Pelé's injury and had a successful career in Italy later), Jose Leandro Andrade (20.11.1898. Winger '24 & '28 OG and '30 WC winner with Uruguay. He never received a card.), Giancarlo Antognoni (1.4.1954. Italian MC playmaker, said to be the successor of the miracleman Gianni Rivera), Osvaldo Ardiles (3.8.1952. Argentine AMC Playmaker, had a successful career in Tottenham and QPR after winning WC in 78.), Baggio brothers, David Beckham (on the top of his game in Man Utd, he was truly one of the best in the world), Danny Blanchflower (10.2.1926. N.Irish AMC. A very clever playmaker, was a key player in the very strong 60's Tottenham side), Oleg Blohhin (5.11.1952. Ukrainian AML/ST, who played for SSSR side and scored 39 in 109 games. He was not only the quickest players in football, but as some believe the quickest in the world, as he had beaten his Olympic winner sprinter friend Valeri Borzov as a youngster), Jan Ceulemans (28.2.1957. MC/AMC/ST. One of the best Belgian players ever), Bruno Conti, Teofilo Cubillas (8.3.1949. Peruvian AMC, that helped Peru reach '70 & '78 WC, where he scored 10 goals. He had a great shot, being the main reason he was selected to the World Squad for '78 UNICEF charity game), Luis del Sol Miramontes (born 1938 in Spain. AMC. When R. Madrid realized Didi doesn't click well enough with di Stefano and so in 1960 del Sol was quickly bought. He was the man who assisted di Stefano and Puškas most then on), Didi (Waldyr Pereira, 8.10.1928. One of the greatest playmakers ever. His technique was like none other's, according to teammates he made the ball talk. He was also a free-kick specialist thanks to his precise and strong shot), Dunga (Carlos Bledorn Verri, great tactitian DMC), Luis Felipe Madeira Caeiro Figo, Tom Finney (5.4.1922. AMC, CM, ST. Altough short and thin, he was said to have the strength of a grizzly he was able to play 76 times for England and scored 30 goals), Paulo Futre, Garrincha (Manoel Fransisco dos Santos 28.10.1933. The ever famous Brazilian winger, thought to be even better than Pelé. It is said that Brazilians adore Pelé, but they love Garrincha. There has not been another dribbler like him, even C. Ronaldo, George Best and Zinedine Zidane can't live up to his skills. Despite his football skills, he was incredibly dumb, when the team discussed tactics, he played table tennis, only thing he had to do on the pitch was to dribble and score. He drank throughout his whole career and died because of it), Geoff Hurst, Jairzinho (Jair Ventura Filho 25.12.1944. He was the successor winger of Garrincha in both Botafogo and Brazil. He signed his pro-contract with Botafogo at the age of 15. At 1970 WC he did something unimaginable, scoring at least one in each and every round), Jimmy Johnstone (30.9.1944. Scottish winger, short and quick, he was a great dribbler, nicknamed fly because of his quicness), Roy Keane, Kevin Keegan, Sandor Kocsis (30.9.1929. AMC/ST. Teammate of Puškas in Honvéd and Hungarian national team, occasionally even outclassing Puškas. He scored 75 goals in 68 national team games), Raymond Kopa (13.10.1931. A great french winger, att mid and striker. He led his club Reims to the European Cup final in 1956, after that he was signed by the finalist opponents R. Madrid. He was one of the best in french squad, when they came 3rd in '58 WC), Laudrup brothers, Paul McGrath, Billy Meredith, Bobby Moore, Johan Neeskens, Frank Rijkaard, Rivaldo, Bryan Robson, Graeme Souness, Hristo Stoičkov, Marco Van Basten, Billy Wright, Zidane + current stars

He was a great player), Gary Lineker, Alessandro Mazzola, Valentino Mazzola, Giuseppe Meazza, Gerd Müller, Jean-Pierre Papin, Silvio Piola, Michel Platini, Raul Gonzales, Ronaldo Luiz Nazario da Lima (on his better days :p), Paulo Rossi, Karl-Heinz Rummenigge, Ian Rush, Alan Shearer, Vava, Fritz Walter, George Weah, Romario and Arthur Friedenreich (born 1892 in Brazil he played from 1909-1935 and scored 1329 professional goals in that time)+current stars

Tanselar

That's a good list, but Super Marco was most definitely a striker, as was Stoickhov (although he could drop back) I would also say that Puskas was more of a AMC/ST type that Kocsis, (the man with the golden head) and Billy Wright was more a defender than a midfielder

Thanks, ILuvManUforeva, I'm a Man Utd fan, too :D

Anyway,

I'm pretty sure Stoičkov played in AMC and the wings, too, using his quickness and dribbling there. Sadly I'm not much of a Barcelona fan and really haven't ever seen him playing, cos I'm too young to have seen him in his earlier days, so I've only read about him... And about Kocsis and Puškas, because they're exceptionally good striking partnership, I looked up additional information. When they were playing for Hungary and Honvéd, they used this tactic to make room for themselves: Kocsis, being a bit faster, moved around with the ball a lot, mostly a little back, so the defenders would follow him, leaving Puškas in acres of space and Puškas having the stronger footshot (THE GREaT LEFT :D) was able to receive the ball and quickly score :) So I think this means that Kocsis played lower than Puškas :)

Few Scottish guys missing ffs!

Jimmy 'Jinky' Johnstone

'Slim' Jim Baxter

Billy Bremner

Kenny Dalglish

Graeme Souness

Denis Law

Dave MacKay

Willie Henderson

Billy McNeil

Alan Hansen

Bobby Murdoch

One or two must be able to get in there.

Danny McGrain should be there. One of the best, if not the best, British right-backs ever.
