Pretty mad to think a Brighton and an Atlanta United player could be lifting the trophy this weekend. It's not even a player at the twilight of his career at Atlanta, he's only 21.

Atlanta are very good at developing young South American players, so it's a testament to their club ethos to have one of them representing Argentina in a World Cup Final.

Also a testament to Atlanta's willingness to spend money. They spent $16MM to sign him from Velez Sarfield, and they've made 4 of the 6 most expensive transfer purchases in MLS history.

But it also speaks to MLS tweaking the Designated Player rule so that younger players would count for less against the salary cap than veteran DPs. It incentivizes looking for young players that you can develop further and sell on for a profit (which MLS has said they want to take the next step and become a selling league) , as opposed to signing name players just to goose ticket/shirt sales.

MLS now has a player that won the World Cup while registered at one of its clubs.
