All for and to Vigo

spacer.png

Here we go again, after a financially desastrous spell in Argentina, not finding the new Maradona.

spacer.png

Staff Additions

spacer.png

The new Assistant Manager.

spacer.png

The new attack coach.

spacer.png

The new defense coach.

spacer.png

The Team

spacer.png

What looks like a balanced team at first sight, isn´t THAT well balanced. The defense lacks compared to midfield and attack but we can´t do anything about it as we are not allowed to sign any players during this transfer window so we have to go with what we got here. Marchesin is still a good keeper but we will have to look for a replacement after the season, Villar doesnt look like his successor. The bad thing is we only got ONE left back and we can´t register any other player due to salary restrictions (more on that later). So if Galán is unavailable we have a problem. I guess we just pray that this won´t happen until we can sign players again. Apart from that, Mingueza, Aidoo and Nunez are pretty much on the same level as center backs. Hugo Mallo is better than Kevin on right back. In midfield things look a bit better. Fran Beltran looks like he can run the show from central midfield alonside Renato Tapia and Oscar. On the wings we have Solari, Cervi, Perez and the talented Swedberg. Sadly, Gabri Veiga will not be able to feature because of said salary restrictions. In attack, we have the local hero Iago Aspas who defies his age every season, proven poacher Pacienca and another talent in Strand Larsen.

Key Players

spacer.png

34 years old, the attacker still has what it takes to be a great goal scorer: Technique, Flair, Finishing all at 16. His Off the ball attribute is even at 17.

spacer.png

We pray he never gets injured. Work rate at 17, Crossing, Dribbling, Stamina and Determination all at 16. Well suited to our offensive tactics.

spacer.png

Bravery, Concentration and Work Rate all at 16, Tackling at 15 and all his physical attributes > 12. What more do you want from a right back?

spacer.png

The Tactics

spacer.png

#1 Tactic: We build from the back when in possession, but otherwise press high and try to counter quickly.

spacer.png

#2 Tactic: A back three helping to play a creative attacking game

spacer.png

The Problems

spacer.png

spacer.png

As mentioned above, we have a problem registering players. This is because only players who have a minimum wage of 13,000 € can be registered. A rule I had never heard of.

spacer.png

spacer.png

We got a really good player in the team named Denis Suarez but the icon says "Una". When hovering over the icon it says he is "unavailable until 5/1/2023. I searched the internet and found that he clashed with the board of Celta and they ruled that he won´t ever play for them anymore. Sad, but true. We could have used him well. So I relegated him to the C team until his contract runs óut.

Start of the Season

spacer.png

Of course all praying didn´t help and our only left back will be out for 2 weeks right before the first league match.

spacer.png

spacer.png

So it took four games until we finally got our first win of the season. And what a start it was - 2 away games, 2 games against the heavyweights and again 2 away games. We led 2-0 in the first game against Rayo and controlled the match but somehow missed our opportunities and were punished. Barcelona and Madrid were too strong as expected and then we finally defeated Getafe. You can´t say that our matches are a borefest, goals galore! Even if we are on the losing side like in the Betis game. A draw against Cadiz was followed by a fantastic game against Valladolid when everything clicked and we scored five fine goals with our young striker Strand Larsen hitting the net 2 times. With that confidence we were able to get away with a respectable draw against Atletico.

spacer.png

We sit in 12th. But our ambitions are higher than that.

spacer.png

Finances

spacer.png

As opposed to my previous job in Argentina, the finances look secure here.

The six league games before the World Cup break

spacer.png

spacer.png

We are getting better, especially in attack. Aspas scored four goals in the last month, with Paciencia and Strand Larsen scoring two goals each. Girona did not have any answer to our young striker Strand Larsen who scored twice to seal their fate. The match against Real Sociedad was a disappointment as we were leading until the last minute. Valencia made short work of us, Paciencia could only score the odd consolation goal in stoppage time. Then our winning streak of three matches started: It helped greatly that we played those three games at home but anyway we won those games with Cervi hitting the target twice against Espanyol and once against Sevilla. We are on a roll!

spacer.png

We rise. Europe is in reach.

Interesting team choice! I’ve never actually managed in Spain! I do fancy a depor save at some point 😃

Must feel like it’s raining money compared to your last club!

Nice to have you here, @SixPointer  :)

I´m enjoying the league so far, although the minimum salary rule is a strange one though. I wonder how I can develop youngsters without being able to bring them to the 1st team before their salary is high enough..? Maybe this changes every season or it depends on your overall wage bill who knows...I guess we will see ;)

And yes, it is a VERY welcome change (financially foremost) compared to Argentinos Juniors!!! :)

Depor sounds like a great save idea considering their turbulent and successful history, especially during the 90s!

The Playoff Tree

spacer.png

Portugal are Champions! Rafael Leao scores the decisive goal in the 38th minute. But where are Argentina?? Or England? Or even Spain? And Ecuador making the semis!

The Losers

spacer.pngspacer.pngspacer.png

Well... they simply were not good enough.

The Stats

spacer.png

Who would have thought good old Andre Ayew would be the top scorer at a World Cup so late in his career?

A Very Happy New Year

spacer.png

spacer.png

What a run of form for our young striker Strand Larsen! He managed to score in EVERY single one of the last six league matches! He has now scored 10 goals in LaLiga, he won´t catch Lewandowski (22) or Benzema (18) but Cavani (13 goals) is in striking distance. Hopefully he can conserve this form. This runs parallel to our league form in general, we managed to lose only one game during that time, against Bilbao. Granted, the opposition wasn´t that strong but still a good run.

spacer.png

6th would have us qualify for Europe.

spacer.png

The Spanish Cup begins

spacer.png

spacer.png

The first 3 rounds we beat minnows, then came Villareal and it took penalties for us to go through. Good effort. Next opponent is Levante away.

spacer.png

Big Transfer

spacer.png

Our only left back Javi Galán will join Real Madrid in the summer for 17.25M. We could not stand in the way of this move and the money is fine.

Our Form Drops

spacer.png

spacer.png

Our form has declined, you gotta admit that. Only lately we found the key to scoring goals again. Gabri Veiga scored the winner against Cadiz. We finally gave him a new contract with a salary above 13K, so we were finally able to register him in january. He seems to pay us back since then. Young striker Strand Larsen though went into a goalscoring crisis and it was time for Paciencia again to show what he can do. And he did. He scored 3 goals in the last 3 matches. Looks like the pendulum swung to his side again, especially after key player Aspas tore his achilles tendon and will be out for the season.

spacer.png

6th still would have us qualify for Europe. But we can feel the breath of Villareal in our necks. Ten games to go.

spacer.png

And our Spanish Cup run ends

spacer.png

spacer.png

An extra time win against Levante got us into the two semi final legs, which we predictably lost against giants Barcelona.

End of the Season

spacer.png

spacer.png

Thanks to an unreal five-game winning streak (actually six, if you count the Girona game from the last update too) we made it to the promised lands! And all without long-term injured Iago Aspas! It surely helped that Strand Larsen found his scoring boots again (2 goals), but the most prolific goalscorer was our loan winger Oscar who scored 8 times in the last 10 matches. I guess, someone had to get into Aspas´ shoes. And a nice 3-0 win against Elche in the last match of the season for a happy ending to a great season.

spacer.png

In the end we finish two points ahead of Atletico Madrid and nine points ahead of Villarreal (sorry, MattyLewis11!), but they can celebrate as well, as 7th place also leads to Europe this season. FC Barcelona easily win the title with Robert Lewandowski on fire who scored incredible 39 goals.

spacer.png

Season Stats

spacer.png

A great team effort, thats what I would call it. Everyone contributed accordingly. Players standing out were our left back Javi Galan, providing 12 assists from that position is quite something. A pity he is leaving for Real Madrid after the season. Our loan players Nunez, Perez and Oscar (the latter especially in the last 10 matches) did a good job and we are sad to see them leave but it´s not my squad politics to rely on loan players so their contracts were not extended. Our attacking players fired with all they had we could always rely on at least one of them scoring when it mattered. Aspas missing the season from mid-february on was a blow but Strand Larsen and Paciencia showed we can still survive without him. He is 36 now, so we need to look for a successor in the near future. Another good things is that our loaned out players will return soon and we will have more options for the new season.

spacer.png

Oscar will return to his parent club Sevilla after the season.

spacer.png

Takeover completed

spacer.png

And they even pumped some money into the club and promised to improve the facilities. Well... we will see.

On the Suarez thing, it can be interesting (and frustrating) to encounter players who are unavailable at the start of the game for various reasons.

It definitely was... interesting... And guess what? I found another player on my team (he was loaned out for the season so I didnt recognize at first sight) who is unavailable, but until 2026!! But more on that in the pre-season update next :)

Nice write up and a very good season, Celta is a good club with a strong youth pedigree, pleased to see you pick them.

I had some theories about the salary to register Veiga (did not encounter that at Valencia in FM22) but as it's sorted we won't go down that path.

A shame to lose Galan, a fine asset. But good luck in the new season.

Welcome to the show, @Jogo Bonito :)

Galan had outgrown our club, we have to be honest. Now we need to grow ourselves.

The Transfer Window

Players out

spacer.png

spacer.png

We already knew that Galán would join Real Madrid and that the loan players would return to their clubs. Then Manchester United came and paid the release fee for Swedberg. Sad to see a big talent go. Kevin was not really a first teamer so we were happy to ship him off to Levante. Paciencia had a good season but then we took the money from Granada. Ruben Blanco just came back from his loan at Marseille and must have impressed the Troyes scouts there so they snapped him up for a nice sum.

Players in

spacer.png

spacer.png

A successor for left back Galán? We went and signed Manu Sanchez from Atletico. He is not quite his level, but comes close. Our defense also needed bolstering and in came central defenders Helander and Roco, two solid tacklers. Josep Martinez will be our backup keeper, he joins from RB Leipzig where his contract ran out. And he already got a cap for Spain! Another keeper, Lucas Canizares joined from Real Madrid but got loaned back for the season as he is only 17 years old. He looks like a good talent. For our attack we signed Tomas Chory, formerly at Viktoria Plzen. Tomas who? I thought we needed a tank up front to throw in when we need a goal in the last minutes. His attributes and his height tell the story:

spacer.png

A real tank.

spacer.png

The Team

spacer.png

Sergio Carreiro, Jose Fontan, Orbelin Pineda and Miguel Beaza are players who were loaned out last season and got back now. Siaka Cissé joins from our B team. We got more possibilites now in defence, and finally we got two (!) left backs! Our midfield is still the best part of the team obviously. In attack, Strand Larsen is developing into a fine player. Hopefully Chory can make the impact I intended when signing him.

Key Players

spacer.png

Back after his achilles tendon injury and still going strong.

spacer.png

The anchor man in midfield. The Peruvian national team regular destroys our opponents attacks early. Aggression (16) and Work rate (17) are his best attributes.

spacer.png

Back from his loan at AEK Athens, the Mexican fits right into our first team. Nice Technique (16), Agility (16) and Dribbling (14).

spacer.png

The Other Player

spacer.pngspacer.png

As mentioned earlier, there is another player in our team who is unavailabe. In real life, this guy was sentenced to 4 years in jail, thats why! He will never play for Vigo

The Start of the Season

spacer.png

spacer.png

Three wins in the first 7 league games is no small feat for a club like us. Given, those were not the creme de la creme of spanish clubs, but still. And Strand Larsen continues to score.

spacer.png

A good start to the season.

spacer.png

First starting eleven appearance for Chory and he delivers, scoring two goals.

It´s only one game, sure.

Good Showings in Europe

spacer.png

spacer.png

Five wins and only two defeats. But the result that sticks out is our 2-1 win against mighty FC Barcelona! The unlikely hero was our winger Franco Cervi with 2 goals, maybe they had underestimated us. But right after this glorious win we lost against their little brothers, Espanyol. Thats typically Vigo for you.

spacer.png

We stay up there with the big boys.

spacer.png

spacer.png

We defeat Feyenoord but fail to do so with Kobenhavn.

spacer.png

A draw in the last game against Osijek will be enough to see us reach the next round.

Winter Wonderland

spacer.png

spacer.png

It was a tough game against Elche, but we won it in the end. Then followed a great match for our fans against Real Madrid, but we still lost it. After that we achieved a credible draw against Sevilla and won at Levante.

spacer.png

We go into the new year as 5th.

spacer.png

spacer.png

Amateur side Mirandés was tough to crack but we did it. In the next round we will face another amateur club, San Sebastian de los Reyes.

January and February 2024
spacer.png

spacer.png

The new year starts promising as we win 5 out of 8. The defeat against Real was a tough one, showing that we still have to learn a lot but apart from that we were very convincing.

spacer.png

Still a tough race for the European places. Champions League maybe beckons but we will have to work a lot for that.

spacer.png

spacer.png

We mostly let the bench players compete in the cup and it showed finally when losing against Valladolid. But still, quarter final!

spacer.png

spacer.png

We fail to score more than one goal at home in the 2nd leg and therefore go out deservedly.

spacer.png

January window transfers

spacer.png

Our keeper Marchesin is already 36, has no future at our club and therefore we won´t extend his contract which is running out after the season. So we bring in 22 year old Austrian national team keeper Niklas Hedl for a bargain 7M. Reflexes, Jumping Reach, Positioning and Determination all at 16 show his potential. He will become our new number one instantly. Backup keeper Ivan Villar goes the other way and joins Girona on loan.

Approaching the Summit
spacer.png

spacer.png

Only two wins in the last two months. We concede quite a few goals, but I don´t blame our new keeper Hedl for that. I think the players are just tired after the long season.

spacer.png

We sit in 6th with a slight chance of reaching the Champions League in 4th place and seven points ahead of non-european places.

spacer.png

Our last four games of the season. Especially the two last ones look very hard.

spacer.png

The Youth Intake

spacer.png

A fantastic intake, although I don´t understand why half of them are from the UAE. All of them get a contract though.

End of the Season

spacer.png

spacer.png

Well, that was a shocking defeat at Rayo Vallecano! Nothing worked and we were trashed. We deserved it. The important thing is, we didn´t stay down but recovered and beat Levante in the next game. AND rivals Villareal at their place! The defeat against Sevilla didn´t matter anymore.

spacer.png

A 6th place finish for us. We qualify for Europe again. A successful season.

spacer.png

Season Stats

spacer.png

Again, a great team effort, although Strand Larsen easily was our player of the season. Scoring 39 goals in only 48 matches, wow! Miguel Baeza also impressed both with goals and assists, even eclipsing oldtimer Iago Aspas with that. New number one keeper Niklas Hedl took some time to adapt but he is getting there and is already a strong addition to our squad. Manu Sanchez on the left back position has proven a great signing. New central defense signings Helander and Roco didn´t do anything special to impress, we will look to load them off and try to get in better quality in defense. Aidoo and Mingueza are doing well though. Renato Tapia once again proved he is one of our key players, as did Franco Cervi. Efficiency has a name: Tomas Chory. Our tank played only 4 games this season but managed to score 3 goals. Impressive!

spacer.png

Strand Larsen all the way.

spacer.png

A great season for him. And us!

The Transfer Window

Players out

spacer.png

spacer.png

Newcastle made the release clause bid for Fran Beltrán and we could do nothing to counter it. Sad to see him go but we were under no illusions there. The three central defenders had to leave as they were just not good enough anymore. Marchesin was a good soldier for us in the last years but we have to look to the future and he got a nice move to Roma.

Players in

spacer.png

spacer.png

Two new wingers - Nam Tae-Hea and Bernard, both with a lot of experience. Pablo Mari improves our quality in defense immensely. Catena is not on his level but will be a good backup. Chiarodia is a CD talent but will be loaned out immediately to get match practice at Pisa. Ball winning midfielder San Emeterio had a great season at Cadiz, hopefully he can keep that up. Drena Beljo is a nice striker talent from Croatia.

spacer.png

The Team

spacer.png

Hedl at the back gives us a more secure feeling. Pablo Mari might be our most important transfer this season. We needed more quality in defense and he definitely plusses it up. There are more options now for us in midfield too, especially on the wings. With Aspas maybe playing his last season, we definitely needed bolstering there. Also Bernard of course is a big name signing. Young croatian striker Drena Beljo is an interesting talent, excited what he can bring to the table, maybe he can even challenge Strand Larsen.

Key Players

spacer.png

He is still so young (23) and already so good.

spacer.png

The new leader in our defense. His Jumping Reach (17), Heading (16) and Strength (16) help a lot.

spacer.png

A prominent name in our squad. His Dribbling (16), Technique (17) and Flair (17) make him the best dribbler in our team.

The Start of the Season

spacer.png

spacer.png

We won the first three games straight, then our bogey team Valladolid defeated us again. We nearly clinched a draw against Barcelona at home but Kingsley Coman scored the winning goal for them. The next home game against Osasuna was a disappointment but we made up for that with winning in Bilbao in the next match. Both our strikers were able to score some goals which is nice to see so early in the season.

spacer.png

4th. What is our bogey team Valladolid doing up there?

spacer.png

spacer.png

...and suddenly we were in the final of the Copa del Rey! How did that happen? We mostly had "managable" opponents on our way and Strand Larsen scored...

spacer.png

...seven goals in one match! We will meet Athletic Bilbao in the final.

spacer.png

Still no defeat in Europe for us.

End of the Season

spacer.png

spacer.png

We finished the season in style with two back-to-back 5-0 victories and only one defeat in the last eight games. This proved more than enough for us to get CL football next season.

spacer.png

A new record finish for Celta Vigo. See you in the Champions League next season!

spacer.png

La Liga´s Topscorer plays for Celta Vigo.

spacer.png

spacer.png

We managed a draw in Napoli but they defeated us in the penalty shoot out.

spacer.png

spacer.png

Here come the Cup Winners! Our first silverware! And what a nice game that was - we were in complete control, all the time. Bilbao only had a few shots from distance but they were all way wide. Strand Larsen missed a penalty shortly before the break but it didn´t matter, because Mingueza finally headed in the the winning goal after a corner by Cervi. Time to celebrate, boys!

spacer.png

Season Stats

spacer.png

Niklas Hedl has become a fantastic player and I am pretty sure we will receive big offers for him in the near future. Alejandro Catena was the surprise of the season as he improved a lot and became irreplaceable in our central defense. Having Pablo Mari alongside im surely helped a lot. Mingueza has matured into a natural leader. Gabri Veiga, on the contrary, took a step back in his development and didn´t get too many games. He will have to put in some more work next season. Pineda had a convincing season once more, as did new signing Bernard, despite his age. Speaking of age, Our winger legend Iago Aspas AGAIN had an achilles tendon injury and was out most of the season. Next season will be his last for us. Chory will leave after this season already. Oh, and our striker Strand Larsen scored 48 goals in 49 games. No words.

spacer.png

Pablo Mari stabilized our defense a lot.

The Transfer Window

Players out

spacer.png

spacer.png

Tottenham paid Hedl´s release clause fee, no chance for us. Nam Tae-Hee never settled and both sides were relieved when he found a new Korean club. Martinez was making noises about leaving so we let him leave. The rest was deadwood or outgoing loans for match practice.

Players in

spacer.png

spacer.png

We needed a replacement for Hedl and we got Mamardashvili for a bargain price. I still don´t understand why Valencia let him go so cheap. We added more experience on the wings in Ante Rebic. Rosas is a good right back prospect, Salah will be the backup keeper. The transfer of the year was Dani Carvajal, whose contract at Madrid was not extended.

spacer.png

The Team

spacer.png

Hedl had to be replaced and I think we did well when we signed Mamardashvili. Legendary Carvajal will be a great help with his presence alone. Our defence looks damn solid by now. Experienced Rebic offers more options on the left wing and he can also stand in for Strand LarsenDrena Beljo did not convince us in his first season, he will have to invest more this year. And it is the Farewell season for our Celta Legend Iago Aspas.

Key Players

spacer.png

A Real Madrid legend. Now playing for Celta Vigo.

No draw at all in the first ten league games of the season. We don´t care as we only lose three time and win the rest. A bit woorying is how many goals we condeded in those ten games: FOURTEEN already...

3rd position.

A credible draw at home with Ajax and two wins without conceding. Good start.

Look at those big clubs... and Legia Warszawa.

Going into the Winter Break

spacer.png

spacer.png

We lost to Barcelona but that was expected. The first two draws and the rest were wins. We kept up our good form in the league. And we are conceding far less.

spacer.png

Still "lurking" in 3rd position. Although we are already way behind the top 2 teams.

spacer.png

Look who´s up there again.

I would have expected us to lose points against the "big" clubs. Then we went on and got trashed by FC Utrecht and drew at home with Young Boys.

spacer.png

We slipped down but Real Madrid slipped down too.

(Not So) Happy New Year

spacer.png

spacer.png

A great run of seven wins in 8 games saw us only lose to Almeria (of all people!). Almost perfect.

spacer.png

No surprise after that run. But still 12 games to go.

spacer.png

Still topping the chart.

This is a disgrace! And a heavy disappointment for our fans and our board! The holders go out at the first occasion. Against THIRD DIVISION Mirandes! That´s what you get for taking opponents too lightly I guess, but we should still have defeated them with our second or even reserve team. A black day for football.

spacer.png

A heavy defeat against Chelsea but a nice win against Milan in our remaining group matches.

spacer.png

We finished outside the automatic qualification zone. But still...

spacer.png

...there was some kind of playoff for the next round among positions 11-20. Which we lost anyway.

As Copa del Rey holders, we were in the competition for the Spanish Supercopa. But we went out against Real Madrid in the semi final (which took place in Saudi-Arabia, by the way). The result was quite disappointing but maybe that was because of the travel fatique so there you got your excuse.

Wins, Wins, Wins

Our run continues. It´s incredible and I don´t know what to say honestly.

Man what a crazy table.

spacer.png

Still topping the chart.

Youth Intake

Again a great UAE intake.

He owes himself a move to the EPL so he can play on Boxing Day.
