Daily Mirror: Stuniverse linked with Rainworth Miners Welfare job

Rainworth_interview_05_leaked.png.e1005029ec6c747736a333e785a22cfb.png

Two questions arise from this press article.

Q1) How did the Daily Mirror get to hear of this, and...

Q2) Why are they even interested in Rainworth Miners Welfare and me?

Boy, oh boy! This Football Manager lark is crazy and I haven't even got a job yet...

Mundial: Stuniverse targets Rainworth Miners Welfare job

And, presumably off the back of the Daily Mirror article, Mundial's Joseph Novak has somehow got hold of my mobile number and given me a call.

Out of my hands now...

Well I've done all I can. Five managerial jobs applied for, five interviews attended, now it's fingers crossed 🤞 and waiting to hear back from the Chairmen and Owners.

Who would you choose to manage? (assuming I get any job offers).

--

As my would-be assistant manager, @Pearomaniac, what do you think?

Brother, with all due respect, **** them all, look at the facilities and stadium at Staveley. I would go for them. The miners will appreciate hard working man which spent his youth on the muddy fields of the sunday leagues, go for it. Lets go Staveley!

Thanks for your thoughts, @Pearomaniac. I must admit, I was quite impressed by the Stadium and facilities at Staveley when I went for my interview.

The other job offer is from Stapenhill

Of the five football clubs I applied to be manager of, Stapenhill was the only one I had any sort of connection with as Stapenhill is a parish within Burton-on-Trent, the town of my birth.

So I'm delighted to have received a job offer from them.

So how do Stapenhill and Staveley's job offers compare?

I'm somewhat taken aback to have received two job offers and, frankly, I'm torn between them.

Stapenhill was the football club I hoped would make an offer but I was very impressed with the stadium and facilities at Staveley Miners Welfare when I went for the interview and Staveley are the closest (27 minutes by car) of the five football clubs I've applied to.

So, comparing the two football clubs:

Neither of them can offer me a wage, a transfer budget, or a players wage budget.

Both are looking to make the playoffs (2nd-5th) this season - Stapenhill with a media prediction of 5th, and a bookies prediction of 11th; Staveley, who were relegated last season, have a media prediction of 2nd, and a bookies prediction of 9th.

Staveley have the more impressive stadium with Inkersall Road having a capacity of 5,000 (220 seats) and have 50 season ticket holders at £60.00 and charge an average £5.00 for tickets. Stapenhill's Maple Grove has a capacity of 1,000 (100 seats), with 20 season ticket holders at £36.00 and charge an average £3.00 for tickets.

Both owners love their club and each club's finances are okay. Stapenhill have the highest current wage bill at £300.00 per week, compared to Staveley's £120.00 per week.

Stapenhill want to sign players under-23 for the first-team and have a Director of Football in place. Staveley have no specific transfer policy.

Stapenhill's corporate facilities are basic, compared to Staveley's fairly basic, and both clubs have poor training facilities, poor youth facilities, basic junior coaching and limited youth recruitment.

I've decided which job offer to accept

I went to bed last night having as good as decided which job offer to accept and this morning, after sleeping on it, I see no reason to change my mind.

The offers are from Stapenhill in Midland League Division 1 and Staveley Miners Welfare in Northern Counties East League Division 1. Both football clubs are Tier 10.

Having taken everything into the consideration, I think one of the football clubs is better equipped than the other to provide a strong foundation on which to build and, hopefully, be successful.

Stapenhill's corporate facilities are basic, compared to Staveley's fairly basic, and both clubs have poor training facilities, poor youth facilities, basic junior coaching and limited youth recruitment.

The football club I've chosen has a bigger stadium, in terms of capacity, seats and season ticket holders, to accommodate that larger fanbase and it is also predicted to fair better this season in terms of the media and bookmaker predictions.

That will, almost certainly, come with higher expectations given that they were relegated from Tier 9 at the end of last season… but football is a pressure, results driven game, so as a manager I have to accept that comes with the job.

Stapenhill is a parish in Burton-on-Trent so, as a Burton born-and-bred lad, I was delighted that Stapenhill made me a job offer but, sadly, that's not the offer I'm going to be accepting.

No, I'm going to accept the Staveley Miners Welfare job offer.

To be fair, Staveley Miners Welfare are an amateur club and this was always going to be a non-paying club so there wasn't going to be much for me and Mr Damms to discuss.

I basically thanked him for offering me the job and said I'd be delighted to manage Staveley Miners Welfare.

Mr Damms thanked me, congratulated me, said "call me, Terry", shook my hand and said he hoped I'd be able to bring success to the Trojans and make the fans at Inkersall Road happy.

Should I advertise for additions to the three man band?

Looks like we have some potential job vacancies.

00_Staff01.png.c869751ab5a0e77dd2a1fcd174419b6f.png

So, given the fact that we don't pay any staff, should I simply advertise all the vacancies and appoint anybody who applies who is willing to work for nothing?

It’s not like more staff working for nothing is going to increase the wage bill, is it?

Not met any players yet...

Well, apart from my player / assistant manager Pat Lindley who tells me he's our "star payer in midfield who can still improve". At 28 years-old, he could well still improve... a bit... but is he our star player?

They are all at work today it seems as they need day-jobs (like me) to pay the bills.

Looks like we drew 2-2 with Coalville Town U21s last Saturday

It looks like a fairly even game in terms of attempts on goal but we dominated possession.

We played a 4-4-2.

I have no idea how I'm going to want Staveley Miners Welfare to play yet as I haven't met the players yet, haven't seen them in training, and know nothing of note about any of them.

I'm really looking forward to meeting the players tomorrow.

And, although we don't have a medical team, my player / assistant Pat Lindley, tells me we have no injury worries.

One of the things I want to do with FM23 is get my hands, or rather my football boots, muddy by getting more involved in training. Rightly, or wrongly, I thought that might be easier to do with a lower-league football club with less training sessions than with a full-time team.

Tues/Thurs would be typical for English non-league amateurs. If you have a midweek cup game you'll lose one or both of them because of travelling and post-game rest, and you can't reschedule them because - as you've noted - the players have jobs to do. I typically leave training to the ass man because you can do so little in the time available apart from general fitness and physical training. I've never been convinced that players at that level are capable of developing much technically anyway. On the other hand, there's little or no downside to doing it yourself.

You really don't need much in the way of scouting. Free trials are your friend - go to transfers/director of football and 'suggest transfer targets' and then pick the positions you want and make sure "free transfers" is selected. It doesn't matter that you haven't got a DoF - your mate Terry or your ass man will make suggestions anyway. Any players available should be invited in on trial, and trial as many as you can. Keep the trials running throughout the season - as you've already seen, your players can be lured away at any time, so you never know when you'll need a replacement.

I'd also try to squeeze in a couple of extra friendlies, preferably against bigger teams. The extra games give you more chances to see how your triallists shape up, and they can be a useful source of income.

I'm no expert at this level, but I've played a few non-league saves over the years, so I'm happy to help if I can. Good luck

Easy easy, calmate amigo. No need to panic. Its simple, u train 2 times a week like every sunday club does because u dont want players that are too prepared for their matches, they will just run over their opposition, wheres the fun in that. So, two trainings per week, after work, never before work, just basically make them run, they gotta run, and then from time to time u do some team bonding in beers and kebabs, u must keep the spirits high, if u win u ask for a chairman to pay for it, and then, occasionally, u do tactics, not too much, u dont want your players to consider u for a too serious knobhead, just enough so DMF knows when the FB stays upfront his job is to fill up the blank if needed, thats it. Advice for the end, dont overthink it, football is a simple game, especially in the sunday league :D

I tried arranging friendlies against bigger teams, @warlock, but it looks like I've left it too late as they all have too busy schedules.

Arranged some additional friendly matches

We've been able to add some more friendly games against the U21s of Nottingham Forest, Sheffield United and Sheffield Wednesday, plus Nuneaton Borough.

It was hard work though, as we contacted lots of teams who told us that their schedule was...

Hopefully, even the U21s might bring a few fans with them. And coaching courses are hard to get at that level - club can't really afford them, and improved badges make you a more attractive poaching target for other teams.

All that really matters at this point is getting to Tier 6 as soon as possible, which isn't too difficult because you have key advantages over your rivals: you're smarter than the AI, which makes recruitment and squad management easier for you.

And all this chat is making me want to do a Tier 10 save again

Yes, it looked like we may get a decent pay-day even from the U21 games.

That makes sense.

Thank you, although Tier 6 seems a long way off at the moment.

I've met my first-team squad

All but two of the players are new-gens and, I'll be honest, having never managed as low as Tier 10 before I have no idea whether they are any good or not.
