Quote For West Ham he basically gets the ball, runs forward with it and passes it into the final third. So...he's not actually a holding midfielder? The_jagster
It's clear that Southgate doesn't want to take risks, that's why Rice doesn't go on any runs for England.
skybluedave
At West Ham he's usually in a DM duo (Soucek) and take it in turns breaking forward.
Mahzun_Savas
If a player plays the same position completely differently for club and coutry then by far the most likely explanation is that player is receiving completely different instructions for club and country. So Rice not running forward at all is mostly likely because he has been told not to run forward which makes it a bit unfair to have a go at Rice for not running forward. Well...Bentancur and Matić can't be the same role, not even close. Plenty of types of midfielders, for me a holding midfielder is someone who's the link between defens and midfield, provides first passing option and initiates the attacks, doesn't wander around too much. But in England's setup, Rice is neither wandering around nor providing the passes, he plays like a defensive midfielder staright from the 90s. Get the ball, pass it to the next man and stay on defense.

If they're not the same role then it means that Rice is somewhere in between them. Although they must be reasonably close stylistically (in the last 365 days). Smallen
I’d say a hybrid of Matic and Bentancur’s style is quite an accurate description too. Data’s good innit.
