If a player plays the same position completely differently for club and coutry then by far the most likely explanation is that player is receiving completely different instructions for club and country.

So Rice not running forward at all is mostly likely because he has been told not to run forward which makes it a bit unfair to have a go at Rice for not running forward.

These are the players Fbref matches him with based on his domestic performances for the last year, he's definitely a defensive midfielder, but one you should probably give licence to break forward through the lines every now and again.

Well...Bentancur and Matić can't be the same role, not even close. :D

Plenty of types of midfielders, for me a holding midfielder is someone who's the link between defens and midfield, provides first passing option and initiates the attacks, doesn't wander around too much.

But in England's setup, Rice is neither wandering around nor providing the passes, he plays like a defensive midfielder staright from the 90s. Get the ball, pass it to the next man and stay on defense.
