FM23 Headline Features Revealed

Love how you avoided the question - Do these players have the same laptop from 2005? No one has had one break and replace it? Why did they do that? Surely not to play a £40 game?

That’s the point though, if they have upgraded it’s because they’ve needed to for other reasons. The attitude of “people that want to keep playing will just upgrade” is just shortsighted nonsense.

100% I would buy FM year on year, even just if there was no update apart from updated squads. If my PC ever became unable to play FM, I would buy a new one. For over 1000 hours played, year on year, it still represents value. I enjoy it. £30 for a round of golf, once a week for a year (assuming a round is 3 hours) is £1560 a year, which is £10 an hour. £33 for a copy of FM works out, per hour as 3p. It is, for me, value. Do I want an improvement? Sure. Will it ever get to a point where I DONT consider it value for money? Probably not.

Worst case scenario, I pay £800 for a  new PC that may last me 5 years, thats 160 pound per year. I would pay £200 a year for a new PC and a copy of FM. That's 54p a day.

Maybe I'm part of the problem? But each to their own.

That's a good breakdown - FM is simply one of the best value for money hobbies there is.

And people don't just use their PC for that alone. It's still a PC and will be used for normal PC things. And streaming etc.

It's not shortsighted - it's the exact point you've made there. When they needed to they did. No one is suggesting lightspeed improvements that requires an upgrade every year. The next upgrade will likely cover another 10-15 years at least.

But that will still cut a number of people out. And that will hit their sales numbers.

Excited about match engine defensive improvements and AI manager (if they do what they say that is).

Recruitment/planner is fine, I never really cared to be honest but it might get me to use it if it makes squad planning more fun.

Everything else could be done in a few weeks by any competent developer familiar with their code base, it's literally window dressing and a new coat of paint for stats they've always had. Oddly enough I don't mind this, I always said SI need to make the game more of an immersive experience than an inbox manager. But it's really a few sprints worth of work here and very disappointing for a years work with all the staff they have.

Same arguments trotted out for lack of even a tiny graphics improvement (maybe not have trees that look like they're from the unity asset store? is that too much to ask?), and I'm sure the same arguments will be used for the next 5 years because it's not really based on anything so can't be argued against.

Some are also selling hopium that one day they will introduce game changing graphics/animations because of x, dangling the carrot and all that.

SI have a monopoly, it makes me sad that they decided this is the road they want to go down but I can't blame them when people will keep buying it no matter what (including me frustratingly, it's probably one of, if not the only, game I buy every year), there's no competition, zero ,nada.

They will drip feed content masked as new games yearly because yearly released games can never really be complete, they would be out of business in a few years or not sell as much otherwise, that's how sports games work. Think features over a decade rather than years, every sports game does this, I used to be frustrated at this but I get it from a business point of view. You have to keep the fan base hoping for more, just that last feature they want is just a version away if you wait.

I just hope the match engine is good and they've fixed the finishing, long balls over your defense when in a settled backline (this scenario is rare in football nowadays for a settled backline in a midblock but the match engine doesn't care and your keeper will watch the ball infront of his nose and won't come for it) and also fullbacks turning away from having an ocean of space infront of them so they can cut back to the supporting midfielder instead of the cross.

If they really knock it out of the park with the ME then I will be grudgingly satisfied.

Squad planner would be big if the AI uses it.

Squad planner is more of a visual aid for users than a backend feature, it just takes what people used to do outside of the game over a few seasons and brings it in. There isn't any actual functionality that's new. The AI already has some system like this where they look for comparable players of the same ability for the same role to replace others and highly doubt this changes.

The squad planner is leaving it to the players to do the heavy mental work of designing their squad over a few years, imagine taking this concept and trying to apply that to every team in the game, loading times would sky rocket.

It would be nice but it's a bit of a pipe dream tbh.

That was what I was looking out for when Nic was introducing it in the video. Would he confirm that the AI squad management would be much better now they have such a tool at their disposal? But no, it seems the already uneven playing field scale would be tipped even further to the advantage of the player. So in effect, it could actually make things worse if you consider that to be the case that we were much better than the AI prior.
Very sad

I’m hoping AI squad management has been improved, but the Squad Planner feature for me is an entirely different concept.

I see this more as a ‘notebook’ - it means I no longer need to use pen and paper planning my squad and transfers as it can be done within this screen in game.

As long as the AI managers have been improved so they function better, they don’t really need a planner as what they do should happen in the background (I.e. they don’t need a notebook)

I know with the ME they’ve always been against giving the human players tools that they didn’t give the AI, but I’m not sure if that extends to stuff outside the ME.
While getting every AI manager to use the squad planner in full might be system heavy, I don’t think it’s unrealistic that this could link to a potential improvement in AI squad building logic (although that wouldn’t be hard based on some of the transfer decisions the AI makes)

Since its a new feature, I think the initial approach would be to keep the AI out of the squad planner.

There may be workflows that SI want to set up in the future, once the squad planner and any potential kinks get ironed out. I do tend to agree that it could potentially be a really good thing for AI squad management. However, it's got to be integrated across the whole game - finance, scouting, training, tactics and finally the AI manager, which is probably the most challenging. Few clubs have one manager at the helm long enough for them to reap the benefits of long-term planning. This would mean that SI need to include within club vision a whole new set of parameters that dictate what the long-term plans are for the club which are non-negotiable and that would define the identity of the club in the long term.  Others might want to be 'development center's that look at the financial rewards of developing youth.  Balancing this against AI managers who might have different priorities could be a very big challenge. I remain hopeful, and I strongly doubt it's going to be a feature in the game for the near term.

I agree the AI won’t be anywhere near the squad planner to start. In its initial form it looks like an editable version of squad depth, with the added ability to bring in players from your short list. Fairly easy to code without too many knock on effects for the wider game.

However, under the hood I’m still hopeful there are improvements and tweaks to long term squad building - especially at big, established clubs with a structure behind them. This is the only way we’ll see conditions ten/fifteen years in where me as a manager at a big club can have a real ding-dong rivalry for titles with another or multiple other clubs. That side of the game seems to die out as time goes on and it’s a shame. It didn’t used to be this way in the earlier CMs where the systems were easier for the AI to manage.

I really hope the recruitment meetings have been fixed and the information that comes into to you fits within your budget. We recommend you buy X, who costs 20m. Sorry buddy but we've got 2m to spend. Thanks for all your hard work!!

Its a brilliant concept, awfully executed, like many features in the game to be honest.

I doubt any game could possibly replicate the many specialist and intricate decisions involved in building a football squad at a professional football club over the course of many years.

The best thing is to play the game for maybe 5 or 6 seasons then re-start because the further you get from day one the more the game degenerates unfortunately.

Do a cool visual and sound immersion in a 3D match and people will forgive the imperfection of the engine. Otherwise, all the emphasis on the imperfection of the match engine.

Simple.

Doubt it, I'd rather have an excellent engine in 2D only, rather than a polished turd.

You are not the main target audience) You FM22 add a good visual with authenticity to the engine and it will be another game.

We are not talking about FIFA here, the football in the engine has always been the most important part of FM. The game didn't even have 3D before 2009!

2D is a visual representation of a match engine that is outdated. And even visually got worse than in earlier versions)

Football management is also emotions from watching the match. And not just observing the correctness of the movement of circles.

What in FM22 is radically wrong in the match engine?

Well goalkeepers can’t get sent off for a start. There’s also much, much more variation in play and goals that can be added. Just look around at some of the goals from this weekend and you’ll quickly see some can’t be adequately reproduced in the engine.

I also believe player and ball physics isn’t correctly represented right now. I think the animations go hand in hand with a lot of this (it’s not one or the other) but there is plenty that can be changed within the current engine itself.

Я также считаю, что физика игрока и мяча сейчас представлена неправильно. Я думаю, что анимация идет рука об руку со многим из этого (это не то и не другое), но есть много того, что можно изменить в самом текущем движке.

I think it's easier to work on graphics for them than it is on the game engine. As a result, there is no progress there or there.

I don't think FM22 had that much wrong with it. I simply disagree with you that the packaging is more important than the content.

Just noticed something from a clip from the ME in action... There's still that "sliding" thing going on with players.

It seems to happen when a player is accelerating. Player just seems to gain speed, but his feet/legs don't reflect that at all. Instead it seems like the running animation is the same. It looks like they're being pushed by wind :D

I choose Good Visuals and good engine, we got a good engine, already. I also think that if you commit for a 3D graphics, you commit for graphics as good as the engine.

OMG You would think after all these years that sliding would be gone . I mean honestly how hard is it nowadays to mimick someone running with CGI . You can do it on a home computer . Cant wait to try the new engine though

In reality how many goal keepers get sent off ? Just curious. Plus this is a business so they keep a lot of upgrades hidden until they decide to release them to make money every year.

They're not otherworldly graphics, but they're not ugly graphics either.

Really the graphics will go on like this forever SI? I love the game and I won't stop playing for graphics, but..

FIFA Manager Season 2020 | Soccer Gaming

FIFA Manager gave each other good competition and it showed . I preferred the FIFA game but then the Pre-Editor was a lot better in FM so I switched after FIFA13 . Just as well as it stopped after 2014 anyway . Competition is healthy for sport as it is for businesses . Will take years before a rival would appear if any . This is why we get minimal released features every year.

Football management = how to win matches (in real life, also money) by applying certain ideas and strategies. You are a director, not a spectator. A movie director will not faint with emotion watching an Oscar film, but will look for solutions to produce better movies as well.

The reality is that a manager is not interested in televised close-ups. Why ? Well, because he also sees what a spectator in the stadium or someone watching the match on TV does not see. However, we are talking about a game, and a game can be (or not) a mixture of management and fan experiences. However, in 99% of the world's stadiums, a spectator in the stands has limited visibility due to the distance and the lack of a TV screen. This does not mean that this fan cannot support a team just because "he does not see a match like on TV".

Damn right. Just like flight simulators should never have visuals of a plane in flight, because the pilot can't be outside the plane while flying it.

It doesn’t really matter. It’s a part of real football that isn’t replicated in the match engine. There has been a case of a keeper being sent off in the CL final.

It’s not that it’s hidden, it’s a limitation of the current engine and how players collide. So something that will be developed in the next version of the engine.

Some small things I still hope for '23:

- "Brings ball out of defence" is toned down a bit and refined. In real life this is almost always situational and defenders will carry the ball/shuffle forward when space is ahead of them. In FM it seems like they just put their head down and "charge!" forwards with mazy runs, and sometimes you feel as if there is a barrier around them preventing the opposition engaging them.

- The bands and spacing between the lines. I know modern football squeezes the space available, high defensive lines, etc, but I thought on FM22 this was a bit extreme. You'd often get the game played in the middle of the pitch with like 20 metres max. from one defensive line to another with everyone squeezed in between. Consider this, and it made the issues with pressing centre backs and their pass completion even more odd.

- A decade long held view.... complete rework of wideplay. Just because they play on the flanks doesn't mean they have to run with ball and cross often.

- Another long held view, adding some much needed depth to the goalkeeper and it not just being a semi-ghost object blocking up the goal. Fundamental reworking or scrapping of the existing roles, having some sort of collision detection and them being able to tackle or foul or whatever defensive work, and completely revolutionise their possibilities with the ball and them being able to contribute to possession and playing out from the back.

Well, yes. A flight simulator can only be good if you can visualize 22 planes at the same time, plus the pilots faces (and possibly also the passengers, if any) at takeoff, during flight and landing. Also, the landscapes (high quality !) should be animated in such a way that you can visualize not only plains, mountains and rivers but also moving cars, trains, ships or other planes, and even people.
These would be the minimum requirements and I am really surprised that someone could play a flight simulator that does not respect these conditions.

Just read the thread. Firstly, if holding back the game development from a visual perspective (to keep old laptops alive…..) really is the business model there’s no hope.

Personally, I don’t think it can be because the long term future of the game isn’t with ageing players like myself that have been in since inception. It’s with the kids and they won’t tolerate graphics worse than a game on your phone. I know SI get that, they must.

for me the best and only feature announced that has me interested is having 5 subs and 9 bench players for every season and not just the first one as a covid measure, but that change is introduced by fifa changing the rules for top tier leagues.

I don’t think anyone is holding back the game intentionally. It’s quite clear there is stuff being worked on in the background that has, potentially, a 3 year development cycle. It wouldn’t surprise me if there were smaller, QOL changes this year whilst major upgrades are being worked on to be released in upcoming editions. Something like a brand new match engine can’t be released iteratively until the MVP is acceptable.

Is it a little too much to ask that this be fixed at some point in the future? My first choice LB and they think this offer will get him? Surely anyone at SI can look at this and realise that its a big problem and has been for as long as I can remember.

You want one of my first team players, make an offer that makes sense.

Players are still playing on a disc ie the 2d disc. They aren't physically on the pitch like it is with FIFA etc. Stuff that was changed for FIFA on a PS3. Don't think SI will ever be able to change that, just make it look better.

We can speculate endlesly with these things, but in modern game development or in any business that are so long lasting, you need to take leaps and take advantage of things surrounding you.
