It looked like we were going to drop frustrating points at the beginning of the month again, but Aristide Ouattara saved us from dropping points late on against ES Bafing. From there we have been unstoppable and won every single game comfortably. The only problem is that ASEC Mimosas also dont stop winning so we only lead on goal difference so far...

Two very tough games before the mid-season break as we have our first game against ASEC Mimosas. We could see more games added depending on how fixtures are re-arranged after the Champions League draw.

There are no easy draws and we certainly didnt get one again. We know we can beat TP Mazembe and we will need to also get results out of one of the big boys of North Africa to get through the group stage.

As predicted it means we come back from the mid-season break a bit earlier to play re-arranged fixtures.

The AFCON really did us over this season...we had 9 players out, 7 first team players and they missed the game against ASEC Mimosas and all our re-arranged games at the end of January. Surprisingly ASEC Mimosas had no players called up so despite our best efforts they were too strong for us. We also dropped points against ES Bafing and now have a huge uphill battle to catch an ASEC Mimosas side who are just out of this league.

Very quiet transfer window. Only outgoing is Prince Samson who never really broke into the first team, so making a return of at least $150k on a player we got for free seemed like a good deal.

We'll still have players out in the AFCON for the first couple of games, so will do well to win those. We also start our Champions League Group Stage campaign this month with a tough trip to Morocco.

We have a perfect month in Ligue 1 but that doesnt matter as ASEC Mimosas are stupidly good this season and still have a 100% record after 17 games. In the Champions League we have a couple of great results against Raja Casablanca and a red card prevented us from giving a home win a real shot against TP Mazembe. We do sit in second place though which is great at the halfway stage.

Next Fixtures

We'll keep plugging away in Ligue 1 in the hope ASEC Mimosas slip up and in the Champions League we will do well to avoid defeat in both games this month.

In Ligue 1 we lose further ground to ASEC Mimosas as we were unable to overcome a stubborn Séwé FC side. In the Champions League an excellent away win in DR Congo sees us qualify for the Quarter Finals before Al-Ahly edge a tight game we should have really gotten at least a point from.

Next Fixtures

The game against Al-Ahly is a formality and we could have extra games in April due to the Quarter Finals. Ligue 1 is also a formality at this point although I would really like to take points off ASEC Mimosas.

Whilst it was a formality, coming from behind to beat Al-Ahly in Cairo is always a sweet moment. When it then really mattered we had a very tight tie against Ebedei. I was feeling pessimistic when they nullified all our threats at home and walked away with an away win. Then when they converted a penalty in the first 5 minutes of the second leg I thought we would struggle to overturn the deficit, but Georges Codjo was clinical and turned the tie around still in the first half. We just held on in the second 45 minutes to win the tie and book a place in the Semi-Final!

Next Fixtures

image.png.896be5474fabec746b3a3a640b296627.png

The Champions League games will be given full priority as we look to beat Tunisian giants ES Tunis. Interestingly the other Semi-Final has ASEC Mimosas playing Al-Ahly, so there is a (unlikely) chance of an all-Ivorian Final.

Knew ASEC would be a huge roadblock in CIV, but didn't realise just how big! Absolutely dominant this season.

Yes it makes me wish we had taken our opportunity a few seasons ago when they were not as consistent. At least having multiple champions league campaigns has been fun whilst we wait for them to have a bad season :D

This has been a really great read and it is fantastic that you have kept this going, good to see Kojo getting some continental campaigns as well. Dread saying this as don't want to jinx it but would be somewhat ironic if you conquered Africa before the Ivory coast - although ASEC could well come out with a 100% campaign.

One thing I was wondering, where does Kojo sit in the ranks of managers in Africa?

I was going to reply once I played again to give you some screenshots but seems like I wont get game time until the weekend, so I'll upload them later :)

I have loved this save so far, probably my most enjoyable in CM/FM ever, I am at the stage where I am getting itchy to do something different but I am so close to the end that I am determined to finish it!

Catching ASEC Mimosas will be impossible this season I think, but if we can get some Champions League success that would be great, I think Kojo deserves a Champions League title and I was going to do it in the end once he got to Ghana, but if we win it earlier than that I can skip that part :)

Kojo has actually only made a small mark in the Hall of Fame, primarily because he is only winning one title every 3-4 years and at lower rep leagues. He has sneaked into the Ghanaian Top 10 but dont think he is near the African one, will check it out at the weekend and post the screen shots :)

2072/73 Season Review

image.png.39a8236468702cfd5c6bb7340916db49.png

A painful end to a season of second bests. We accumulated the most points by a team in the history of Ligue 1 without winning a title, behind an ASEC Mimosas side that beat the record of points in a season. The same ASEC Mimosas beat us in the final of an excellent Champions League campaign, we went ahead in the first half but couldnt hold on and to be fair they were deserved winners.

Squad by Appearances

image.png.677378f00666abaa6ca20faeca41ebcf.png

image.png.f0b1276dd95060232a3bf375add7de8f.png

With the amount of games we had this season, there was bound to be a lot of rotation, but we also had some healthy competition for places in defence and midfield which helped us keep a strong campaign on the domestic and con fronts.

Awards

We sneak a couple of players in the Champions League Dream Team. In Ligue 1 Coulibaly is Goalkeeper of the Season for a second time and Aristide Ouattara becomes the player with the most goals in a single season in the story of the league, scoring an impressive goal per game. We actually have more players in the Team of the Season than ASEC Mimosas too.

Top Performers

image.png.ac737f28928cea58f04f4c63c3979f17.png

Keeps getting better and better in front of goal.

image.png.052ce3e8e08a67f58386cc8ddfe9480d.png

Had a really good goalscoring season and continues to improve. With continued interest from Europe and only a year left on his contract I do believe we will have to sell him in the off season though.

image.png.55f7c14723b9dd5ff91ee3e9d8c35fba.png

Surprisingly consistent player. Moving back home after the end of his contract, but at 32 I dont think that is necessarily a bad thing.

Finances

image.png.a3f7501b44b732c1e93208315d0415a4.png

A huge windfall from the Champions League campaign, debating whether to wait on the stadium plans from the board before making requests for Facility improvements or just going for it.

Progress

image.png.1cfd843cef9b047304734669527ec1e1.png

image.png.cfff5b9816f7eed000b91d808b6726d2.png

image.png.51ac9f79fe9650cdc5504cbf9c35019f.png

Another year, another 2nd place. We were somewhat unfortunate in the league as our first encounter with ASEC Mimosas we had half the first team of in the AFCON. It is small margins now and we are close. Other than Abdalas I believe we can hold on to our key players and Aboubakar Coulibaly could well fill that gap in midfield anyway, so hopefully we can come back strong again next season and keep challenging ASEC Mimosas.

CAF Champions League

image.png.97419e73a53141ed0d64cc8d52fbc2c1.png

Strong showing from West Africa again with 7 teams at this stage and 5 going through to the Quarter-Final

image.png.b6e309d1fcc3496a1030ed98533fc52f.png

We all know how this one ended, but a proud moment for Ivorian football and 4th title for ASEC Mimosas.

CAF Confederation Cup

image.png.67f39ca664f426a3c366aa2ca1b06bfe.png

7 teams here too, but only 3 progress further.

image.png.bc42c2e0a59f578fbd834e7d1379eeba.png

Not a great showing from West Africa as Asante Kotoko are the only Semi-Finalist. An all-North African final sees Wydad Casablanca win their 5th title.

We have the typical yoyo between Nigeria and Ghana again and in the lower rep leagues Guinea Bissau is now ahead of The Gambia,

League Champions

image.png.99822a477fd15d21e0a921c48b18d144.png

No big surprises as most big teams continue to dominate.

Former Champions

MC Breweries: Decent first season back in the 2nd tier as they finished 3rd but missed out on promotion due to losing the playoff. Also did well to get to the Semi-Final of the LFA Cup.

Kamboi Eagles: Another season spent in the unplayable leagues.

Nô Pintcha da Brava: Retain the Liga Brava and finish 3rd in their Group in the Cape Verdean Competition, but are knocked out early in the Taça Brava.

AFC Nhacra: Terrible defence of their title as they finish in 6th and are knocked out early in the cup again.

Ayéma FC: Slightly better as they finish 7th in the Championship Group.

CNEPS Excellence: Look to be fading away with another 3rd finish and a poor Confederation Cup Group Stage campaign. Did at least win the League Cup.

Banjul Utd: Up one position from last season as they finish in 4th.

ASN NIGELEC: A very strong 4th place in the Superligue, but an early exit in the Coupe du Niger.

Unisport: Did make it to the Championship Group this year but finished rock bottom there.

CFFEB: Manage a 2nd place finish in the league, but exit the Coupe du Faso in the last 16 stage.

Flamme Olympique: Improve from last season and finish in mid table at 6th.

Avenir AC: 3rd place in Ligue 1 and a Quarter Final exit in the Coupe du Mali. Will be disappointed with their continental campaign again as they lose to Zamalek in the First Round of the Champions League, which is fine, but then lose to Al-Shat SC from Libya to miss out on a place in the Confederation Cup Group Stage.

So I just noticed something discouraging...there has been a bug and we have no league fixtures for this season...unsure what to do right now. Think I will play out this season in the hopes that it will auto-correct for next season and if it doesnt I think I would need to skip Ivory Coast, which I really dont want to do.

Guess having fresh legs helps, dominated a tough group, finishing 5 points ahead of Asante Kotoko and qualifying first.

Tough but at this stage all teams will be difficult. We got a win and a draw in the Group Stage against them last season so hopefully we can get past the Morrocans.

Banjul Utd: 4th again in the First Division.

ASN NIGELEC: Finish well in the Superlige in 6th and get to the Quarter Final of the Coupe du Niger.

Unisport: Slightly better in the Championship as they finish in 5th.

CFFEB: Really strong season as they finish 2nd again and win the Coupe du Faso.

Flamme Olympique: Great season as they finish 2nd, just 3 points off the top.

Avenir AC: Unlucky not to have won Ligue 1 as they finish level on points with Stade Malien but end second due to their head to head record. Do win the Coupe du Mali, but fail to reach the group stage of the Confederation Cup again, this time losing to a good Enyimba Aba side.

September/October 2074

image.png.1bd7ac8b9108355ff572c6cef1c50953.png

From two time finalist to not even making the Group Stage...we got a really tough draw in Zamalek and it was their ability to score at the death that got them through, with two goals after the 90th minute in the first leg and another in the second leg when it looked like we would squeeze past them on away goals. This will be a huge blow financially, luckily we have a buffer but I think that will be gone by the end of the season.

image.png.77a35abdfc3a9b84178b7ad91029d084.png

We have a shot at making it into the Confederation Cup, which is a lot less financially rewarding but would still be good for us to get into. CF Rahimo are not a walkover by far but hopefully we should have enough quality to get through.

2074/75 Season Preview

image.png.08f8a664fd32bc7ace419f5dff17726d.png

Last season we sold Hicham Abdalas and Georges Codjo for a combined $2.1M and reached another Champions League final, which enabled us to make some bigger investments for this season, we did also make some decent money on selling fringe players to offset our spend. These are probably the biggest changes in the First Team for a few seasons, here are our new First Team contenders:

image.png.1cbfff2bba89403efbcadea841f009b8.png

He is naturally a left back, but is capable on both feet and will primarily play on the right for us.

image.png.18fc71b9106facf079b9e5d54e6b9400.png

He is actually a signing from last season on a free from ASEC Mimosas and will fight for a centre back spot.

image.png.48b9d0322c5ba247a109f3c5003815a1.png

We may have overpaid on this one but I am exited to see a true attacking full-back on the left again.

image.png.6acea03b9083f4db98f3effdfae0f571.png

Very excited about this youngster who threatens to bench Aristide Ouattara.

image.png.c4ad1940f7a7d07fcb4a5368d7113a6a.png

Bargain signing on a free from Nigeria, the perfect DLF for us.

Assistant XI

image.png.cffe43426f38a3b3ee223b24c8b6d35d.png

Dont agree with this XI entirely, especially at right back and Kapolongo is a sub for me, albeit a very good one we signed last year.

Initial Fixtures

We dispatched CF Rahimo easily to make it to the Confederation Cup Group Stages. In Ligue 1 we did well to keep a 100%, especially as we have had quite a few injuries and ASEC Mimosas have gone on another impressive run. We are behind them but do have a game in hand.

CAF Confederation Cup Group Stage Draw

Massive changes at the club! There was a takeover and the new president floated the club in the stock exchange, raising $10.5M in cash. With that he proactively offered to increase the transfer budget and allow scouting worldwide. He also agreed to improvements in our training and youth facilities, as well as junior coaching. It feels that with this takeover and the new stadium Cosmos has a good chance of being a long term challenger to ASEC Mimosas' crown.

Another 100% month even with AFCON absentees in the last 3 games. We did have to navigate a couple of tricky games, including beating FC San Pédro with a last minute penalty and turning the game around against RC Abidjan after being 2-1 down in the first half. Good thing we did as ASEC Mimosas continue to win too.

The first big game of Ligue 1 is coming up and a win would really do nicely. We have some tougher fixtures in Ligue 1 again and start our Confederation Cup campaign.

A massive result against ASEC Mimosas! When they scored the opener after 12 minutes I thought we would struggle against them again, but after that actually took control of the game and were two goals up for most of the second half. It was disappointing to then drop points at Sol FC in the next game but at least ASEC Mimosas also dropped points to keep our lead at 5 point.

In the Confederation Cup we absolutely demolished Kaizer Chiefs at home before coming from behind in Morocco to maintain a 100% record and put us in an excellent position in the group.

With our new found money I gave myself the luxury of buying a back-up DLP for Hermann Ako considering he is unsettled and we have few options in the position. Amadou could easily replace Hermann should he decide to leave.

We keep marching on in Ligue 1 with ASEC Mimosas right on our tail, whilst in the Confederation Cup we get complacent after pretty much ensuring qualification and miss out on a chance to guarantee first place with a game to go.

In the Confederation Cup a walloping at Kojo's former club ensured first place and a straightforward Quarter-Final against Zimbabwean side Ngezi Platinum, which we saw off with relative ease. This meant only one game in Ligue 1 this month which we won, but the big news was that ASEC Mimosas dropped points in a game, putting us in a stronger position at the end of the month.

This is the month, with a 4 point lead and a game in hand it is up to us to win Ligue 1 and getting a point at ASEC Mimosas will be key to that. In the Confederation Cup we get HUS Agadir in the Semi Final and I am sure it will be as close as the Group Stage games.

2074/75 Season Review

image.png.eb08d9bb406d2eb7b0b4d1bb84e7bad8.png

Smashed it this season, with an impressive 25 wins out 26. We managed to break the record for most points, most wins and most goals, including most goals by a player in a season as Samson Yussuf netted well over a goal a game, so whilst ASEC Mimosas are the dominant side we hold the most single-season records :). To complement that we had a great campaign in the Confederation Cup and quite comfortably won both Cosmos and Kojo's first continental trophy!

We were lucky in avoiding longer injuries to our key players, so the core of the team remained relatively intact. We did have good back-ups though for the occasional need.

Unsurprisingly we dominated the awards across Ligue 1 and the Confederation Cup, especially our main man Samson Yussuf.

Top Performers

image.png.e7afa11b82d084e008fe27353fd885df.png

What a player! Aristide Ouattara is a great servant to the club but the step up to Samson was clear this season as he is just clinical up front, scoring an amazing 39 goals in 30 appearances!

image.png.d40f65dbae37a79872ae311db32a3668.png

Another signing we got absolutely spot on, I hadnt found such a good attacking full-back in a while and they really make the difference in our tactic, as his 11 assists testify.

image.png.b09fc8f3e4a85612357344e047f19f84.png

Coffi has had another great season, his 7th with the club in which he made the AP spot his own.

Finances

image.png.3e4599b39187d9463c54b512f061a35a.png

Safe to say a good year financially with the club well set-up for at least 3-5 seasons.

So our longest spell at a club has come to an end with mixed feelings. On one hand it is a shame to leave the club with the ownership changes and new stadium move which would have lead to good period of domination of the club. On the other hand Kojo leaves the club really feeling like it has been transformed on all levels, from the players, infrastructure and even the reputation raise from 1.5 to 2.5 stars. Will be interesting to see if they have a decent spell now or if ASEC Mimosas will go back to winning titles every year. We only have two countries to go, with Nigeria the last step before Kojo heads back home!

Chapter 14 - Nigeria

image.png.635a5a38f1c7e51867ac3991f2ef591b.png

nigeria_physical_map.gif

Nigeria is a country in West Africa that borders Niger to the North, Chad to the Northeast, Cameroon to the East and Benin to the West. With a population of over 230 million it is the most populous country in African and 6th in the World. Its capital is Abuja in the center of the country, but Lagos is the biggest city and economic hub. Its metropolitan area has around 21 million inhabitants and is the biggest in Africa. Nigeria has over 250 ethnic groups and 500 languages, but the main three comprising around 60% of the population are the Hausa, Yoruba and Igbo. English is the official language of the country.

There were several kingdoms in Nigeria before colonization, with the most notable the Kingdom of Nri, which was consolidated in the 10th century and lost sovereignty under the British in 1911. The Portuguese were the first European explorers in Nigeria and renamed the city of Eko into Lagos, but it was the British the took rule over Nigeria around 1851, beginning with city of Lagos until joining the Souther and Northern Nigerian Protectorates in 1914. British rule lasted until 1954 when Nigeria declared self-rule, before full independence in 1960.

The first government of Nigeria was a coalition of conservative parties, but the perceived imbalance and corruption in the government led to coupe d'etat and civil war in 1966. The war lasted 30-month and started when an Eastern Government declared a Republic of Biafra independent from the federal state of Nigeria. A combination of autocratic and military leadership followed for the next years until 1979 when a Second Republic was put into place. That didnt last long though and military dictatorship returned in 1983, with a struggle to return to democracy until 1999, Since then there has been shift in power between parties and a stronger parliament in the country.

Nigeria has the largest economy in Africa and 31st in the World by GDP., how ever GDP per capita is lower than South Africa, Egypt and Morocco due to greater inequality. Oil is a huge source of income for the country, but it has been able to develop a strong financial sector, with several of its banks operating internationally and is a leader in energy power, pharmaceuticals and entertainment. Tourism in the country is largely centered around events due to the ample amount of ethnic groups. Tourism has gone down recently due to the rise of Boko Haram in the country and it is not viewed as a safe destination. Nigeria does have a mix, of forest, beaches and urban tourism, such as the Obudu mountains and its Obudu Mountain Resort.

Football in Nigeria

Football is the most popular sport in Nigeria, being introduced by the British in 1904 and becoming a national sport by 1950. Several players of Nigeria play in Europe and it is one of the most successful sides in Africa. Pre-game they reached the last 16 of the World Cup 3 times and won the Africa Cup of Nations 3 times. They have done even better in game with a 4th place finish in 2054 and an additional 4 AFCONs.

The Nigerian Professional Football League was founded in 1972. Pre-game there hasnt been a really dominant side, with Enyimba Aba the biggest winners with 8 titles and also African success. In-game the league has been dominated by two sides, Kano Pillars and Enyimba Aba who have won all but 6 titles. Kano Pillars dominated for a long time and now have most titles at 33, but Enyimba Aba have won the last 9 straight titles.

image.png.4301c94884e506d176c8ee8a17dbd870.png

With so few winners it means there is actually a decent choice of clubs, with Katsina Utd, Kwara Utd, Ebedei, Adamawa Utd and Warri Wolves all 2.5 star teams that make it into Africa quite often and have not woin the title yet. Ideally I would like Kojo to get one of those jobs, but we woould consider 2 star jobs and potentially 1.5 star ones.

2074/75 West African Review

CAF Champions League

image.png.bc20b7f80a5b0d947f94ea82d505e618.png

A very strong 9 teams at this stage here, but they did not do well in the Group Stage with only 3 going through.

image.png.9d43a8b14738bb069b567d5127987379.png

It was almost an Ivorian double in African, but Al-Ahly edged ASEC Mimosas on penalties to win a record extending 14th title.

CAF Confederation Cup

image.png.dafa54b249143795223943238fb24b9c.png

7 sides again, with unfancied teams from West Africa, as well as a surprise appearances by a Mozambican team, who got trounced. 4 teams make it into the Group Stage.

image.png.f28f0b3ad0bd9977b1af7e880975568e.png

We all know what happened here and Cosmos walked to a comfortable first continental trophy.

Very little movement this season, with only The Gambia and Guinea-Bissau switching places towards the bottom.

League Champions

image.png.45e5c2dbe76b1e1a2f7c5ef06373f543.png

No new champions other than Kojo's Cosmos in Ivory Coast!

Former Champions

MC Breweries: Straight back down to the second tier as they finish 10th and lose the promotion playoff. Out in the first round of the LFA Cup as well.

Kamboi Eagles: Another season spent in the unplayable leagues.

Nô Pintcha da Brava: Disappointing season again as they finish 2nd in Liga Brava and are knocked out in the Semi Final of the Taça Brava.

AFC Nhacra: A bit better again as they finish 3rd, but are knocked out early in the cup again.

Ayéma FC: Shocking season as they go into the Relegation Group and finish only 7 points from the drop.

CNEPS Excellence: 2nd in Ligue 1, no national cups and a Group Stage exit at the Confederation Cup.

Banjul Utd: Big drop as they finish 10th in the First Division.

ASN NIGELEC: Slight drop in the Superligue as they finish 8th and terrible in the Coupe du Niger as they are knocked out in the First Round.

Unisport: Decent again in the Championship as they finish in 5th.

CFFEB: Poor season as they finish 6th and lose out in the Last 16 of the Coupe du Faso. In Africa a tough draw saw them being knocked out by Pyramids FC in the First Round of the Confederation Cup.

Flamme Olympique: Slight drop from last season as they finish 4th, but only 5 points from the top. They also almost made it into the CAF Confederation Cup Group Stages, but narrowly lost out to Yeggo Foot in the Second Round.

Avenir AC: Couldnt keep up with the demands of continental football, so whilst they made it to the Group Stages of the Champions League they only finished in 6th in Ligue 1 and were knocked out in the Semi Final of the Coupe du Mali.
