Is it possible to change competition rules in an ongoing save?

I have a group stage in a custom competition with a playoff to determine who proceeds to the next round if the top two are level on points. But the playoff winner is treated as if they've won the tournament. I know it's a ranking levels issue (although not sure how you'd even set possible rankings for a positional playoff that only happens under certain circumstances). I can't change the file and restart my save though, so is there any way to change the ranking rules, or remove the playoff so it's just based on goal difference etc instead in an existing save? Or do I just need to live with the error?

Takes me about 20 seasons worth of testing just to find the big issues with things I edit.

Then I load many, many times to tweak and test.

I usually play 2 seasons fully before I settle into a save.

Finally I still take notes during a long save, so the next one is that little bit better.

Yep, same here.

Don't forget real soak tests before starting a new game with new rules.

I don't mean validation, or even the competition tester. Start a new game using the exact config you plan to play with, make an unemployed manager, send him on holiday for 10 years and then look at all the competitions that have new rules. All stages, all years.

I'm playing with over 100 leagues loaded, doing a long term holiday test of that would've been slow!

Plus I was kind of in a rush to start my save before SI ruined the game with their latest patch.

I just load the bare minimum for some testing and all of them for shorter tests.

I also do the "soak" tests, play a whole season, just to make sue it feels right.

I still find stuff to fix, got loads of notes on my current save!

The bare minimum test is running the complete competition tree for the competition I have changed. That one runs about 10-20 seasons to see if anything tricky happens, especially with promotion/relegation and regional divisions.

Then it is running in the larger setup that I plan to run (in my case the Iron Curtain mod) and check if anything else goes wrong. In my case it is 33 nations loaded. That one will run about 20-50 seasons

It does help that I work at home so I can keep the game going without having to look at it. After that it is confirming everything goes according to plan.

By exact config, I guess I should be clearer here. I mean the exact same editor data config, and any new competitions should be playable. You don't need to load in anything that isn't edited.

Without these tests as a cross reference to make sure the different files play nice with each other, or that rules are working correctly, and with the complicated nature of advanced editor files there will be an error somewhere, you'll likely end up with a new game that could even end up unplayable simply due to a simple error. One small, easily missed typing error is all it takes to ruin an entire game.

yes the minimum test I run is 10 years in game I dont rely on the test in the editor, usually I bypass this for most files and go straight to in game testing usually with a custom start date file 10 years in advance just to see the comps are actually running[this is a quick way to find any issues] correctly every season, then a holiday sim unemployed from normal game start just to be doubly sure
