The team needs little introduction due to the Challenge that is "The Cape Verde Challenge" on the forum. AE Africanos Bragança are a football team for the college in Braganca, Portugal. What is different about this college, well they mainly host African students, especially from Cape Verde. As they produce youth candidates from Cape Verde, this is a wonderful challenge to not only bring Africanos Bragança to the forefront of Portuguese football, but to do it with a squad full of Cape Verdean players to help raise the Cape Verde National Team to glory also.

Braganca

Bragança is the capital of the region that belies it nature and is the most remote part of mainland Portugal. Ancient stone houses still cluster in small villages that seem unaffected by the speed and complexities of modern life. Traditional dishes fill the bellies of hard-working farmers in a sometimes wild climate in this beautiful but rugged isolated region. Only a few miles away from the Spanish border was known in Celtic times as Brigantia and by the Romans as Juliobriga, its hilltop location has appealed to many a defending population and it was the royal seat of the Dukes of Bragança until the dissolution of the monarchy in 1910, indeed the royal consort of English King Charles II, Catherine of Bragança, hailed from here. The walls and castle which still stand date from the 12th century and boast a 33metre keep and various watchtowers.

Cape Verde

Officially the Republic of Cabo Verde, is an archipelago and island country in the central Atlantic Ocean, consisting of ten volcanic islands with a combined land area of about 4,033 square kilometres (1,557 sq mi). These islands lie between 600 to 850 kilometres (320 to 460 nautical miles) west of Cap-Vert, the westernmost point of continental Africa. The Cape Verde islands form part of the Macaronesia ecoregion, along with the Azores, the Canary Islands, Madeira and the Savage Isles. The Cape Verde archipelago was uninhabited until the 15th century, when Portuguese explorers discovered and colonized the islands, thus establishing the first European settlement in the tropics.

More on the Cape Verde National Team to follow once we look at them at the end of each year.

Behind the Save - The boring bits

This will be a youth only challenge. It has taken me a while to actually get to this stage as the first season the Home-Grown rules only allow around 5 players and the rest are grey. But once we get out of the first year it should be manageable but some players still take a good year+ to be able to play for the team. Any former players can come back to the team if they came from the youth academy but no-one else can be signed.

They are originally unplayable - First season was holidayed until they got promoted.... It took a while!

I toyed with the idea of signing Cape Verde players but we will stick to just the Youth Academy for now!!

I am also going to try and avoid screenshots and use the export and spreadsheets to put all information across, hopefully!

Africanos Braganca - 2023 Youth Intake

As the first year was holidayed to get Africanos Braganca promoted to be playable, there was 6 players who will form the 2022 youth intake. Unfortunately, none of those were able to play this season and some will not be Home Grown until the 2024 season. Edson Almedia 22a looks a promising striker with superb finishing for this level, bit is lacking in most physical parts of his game. The 2023 intake, the first for Head of Youth Development Joao Martins was a good intake. The highest rated prospect was goalkeeper Helio Lopes 23a who may have a long wait to take over the #1 jersey. The bets outfield player was Antonio Varela 23b, a hard working central midfielder. We may not get a full picture of how good some of these players could be until they have had a few seasons with us, fortunately over half of them will be Home Grown by the 2nd game of the 2023 season.

Africanos Bragança - End of Season 1 - 2022/23 Review

aQUtcau.png

Year One was always going to be a huge struggle with a "Grey" team for most of the starting XI and we would win 4 games in the Campeonato De Portugal Prio A, which was above expectations. We would be heading to the relegation phase after that when half the teams would go down, so finishing in the top 4 was the only option. Thankfully, we found our form after the 7th game to win 5 in a row which really was the difference and we avoided the drop by 6 points. Survival was the only thing that mattered, and survive we did! A large amount of the youth prospects are a long way from the first team for the new season so expect a few more years of struggle before we can expect to not be in the Relegation Group to end the season.

We did manage to upgrade the Youth Facilities also which was a big move for the small team and we hope to start been able to improve that Youth Recruitment, but this season they put their foot down and said no a couple of times.

Only a small end of season summary as we couldn't put a full team out so it is more of a re-cap ready to start the 2023/34 season properly.
