First Team Squad Review - Part 2

Centre Backs

It is an area we lack experience in but we do have very good potential. Currently we are starting Dyer (limited potential but good experience) and Baldini (young and raw but great potential). In some of the bigger matches I move Parker in from full back to play centre back as our backup full backs are currently better than our backup centre backs. Mills and Connor both have very good potential but need to develop a bit more for more games!

Gordon is the standout here. A very solid holding midfielder with fantastic mentals and physicals. Boylan is the backup currently but I really do like the look of Traore who down the line could be our starter.

Stephenson and Alhassan are comfortably our starting 2 wingers with Doyle being the main backup. We have turned down up to £10m offers for him in pre-season. Franklin I think I will look to get a loan move in January to aid development

An area we are very strong. Both Gayle and Kearney are very solid prospects and are performing very well. Kearney cant be far off a full international call up for Ireland!

Only 3 strikers here but we do have Kearney and Gayle who can fill in as well. Sheehan and Roberts have a fantastic partnership together that have propelled us to the PL. Smith is a good prospect but needs games to develop!

They're Back!

image.png.5a2d5db3c0c1e364a88de7fbd3bb6df0.png

I made the decision to allow myself to bring back anyone I see fit who came through our academy. With Birmingham being relegated last season I went in for Fenlon and Bunn to help with the strength of the defence!

FA Cup Semi Final

image.thumb.png.c566a42c4348e74f49034082559c733d.png

We have reached the FA Cup final! We were fortunate here and the proof is in the fact that our keeper Gelacio got man of the match. We were thankfully clinical up the other end.

FA Cup Final

image.thumb.png.885d45b7ddc16dc1c0c6f6f5cdc1bb5e.png

Wow what a performance as we win our first ever major trophy. It was a tight game but we managed to go in 2 nil up at half time and were throwing our bodies on the line. They did get one back late on and it looked like we were in for a tough last 8 or 9 mins but young Northern Irish striker Smith took it upon himself to ease the tension and put us 3-1 up and the FA Cup is ours!

image.thumb.png.768691bbbedd0abe100e0f6eb783d4d0.png

There was always going to be some batterings but we dont half entertain. Our aim was to be better than 3 teams and that was it!  A total of 172 goals in our games! The closest to that is 137!

League Table

image.thumb.png.be0331669923815135e9afde2d46c33c.png

We never hit that magical 40pt mark but we did manage to finish above 3 teams. Thankfully Derby and Everton where miles off. Brentford and ourselves had a showdown but our win over Brighton pretty much guaranteed our safety!

FA Cup

image.thumb.png.1aa72acece0b8abf9af27dfb484c7c24.png

Well no one expected this. It fairness it was quite a kind run to the final but once we got there we were huge underdogs but we rose to the occasion to give us European football for the first time ever!

Carabao Cup

image.thumb.png.4e48b38305731e88e6b3f8870bc88d6e.png

We scraped by Millwall in our first game before being thumped by Liverpool in the 3rd round!

Goalkeeper Watch

Gelacio scored 6 goals in 40 games. Onoja got 1 goal in 6 games!

Player Review - Antonio Baldini (YP37B)

image.thumb.png.af113b914ed380caa26a63c50b348375.png

Really good development for Baldini this season. He played 24 times this season which has really aided his development!

Player Of The Season - Tobi Sheehan (YP33D)

image.thumb.png.4013a4d5ef75707fc49a372e4ac2519e.png

A great season for Sheehan who finished joint top scorer in the league alongside Greenwood scoring 22 goals. In total he scored 24 goals and got 7 assists in  35 (1) appearances!

Young Player Of The Season - Aidan Kearney (YP36A)

image.thumb.png.9cd1468158595bb7ed723287e8e0b11b.png

A real breakout season for Kearney who made his international debut for Ireland grabbing a goal! He got 14 goals and 7 assists this season!

Transfers

Now that the summer and winter transfer windows have closed lets have a look at the work we have done!

In

image.png.0241d80cb78fac3bc8a536f672755d03.png

As discussed previously we brought Lavdarias back after he was relegated with Everton!

Out

image.png.873686fb9bbe15ed3636ddb49ea9cd71.png

We sold a total of 5 players 3 of which where part of the first team in previous seasons. Dyer played a total of 384 games for the club but was limited in terms of high end PA and with some good players coming through and the return of Fenlon and Bunn he was no longer required. Milton was another who had a limited potential at this level and after 435 games for the club he is off to Forest. Brook went to Peterborough after appearing just under 100 times for the club. The other 2 where youth players who werent progressing and were sold on!

Europe League

Group Stages

image.thumb.png.15e538e5c066f9b6b469d0fac9b75a3f.png

100% record in a fairly kind draw! A lot of rotation used here as well which is great for game time!

image.thumb.png.9e2fc690329a8f158638d6841fdf03fa.png

We finish top and skip the first knockout stage and go straight into the second knockout stage!

Second Knockout Stage

image.thumb.png.9857cff2035ac77e0918587f111a5aa7.png

A tough draw but 2 amazing performances for us send us through 7-2 on aggregate. The matches where much tighter than it shows but my gosh we were clinical!

Quarter Final

image.thumb.png.2e572c00e19579ea5cde82f80a3dd788.png

This in theory was an easier draw than our first knockout match against Leipzig but it was extremely tight. We went down 2-1 from the first leg. We were 2-0 down and a man down before Gayle scored what turned out to be a vital goal. In the second leg our keeper Gelacio scored to send it to extra time. Gayle put us ahead on going through before they equalised late on. It took a total of 21 penalties to separate us in the end but thankfully Fenlon's penalty sent us through!

Semi Final

image.thumb.png.f044ee2ae678afd71fb6cb68108a21cc.png

Well I was upset after the first leg as we threw a 2 goal lead in the last 3mins of the game. However we bounced back with a thumping home win over Benfica to send us to the final!

image.thumb.png.909d5a9a954a0879741b7876f239d990.png

Arsenal where 2 nil down going into their 2nd leg against Roma. But managed to pull it back winning 3-0 at home with an 118th minute extra time goal sending them through. We played each other last year and we beat them 3-1 in the FA Cup final! Let's hope history repeats itself!

Final

image.thumb.png.57c380777f1ff7bec2fa26e810f535bf.png

In truth we were 2nd best before the sending off but at 1-1 we were still well within the game. After Kearney was sent off Arsenal piled the pressure on and got the winner. Tough pill to swallow but an amazing performance this season in the Europa League!

image.thumb.png.9a3aa68cf547fb44c350bc1f5c39e663.png

After our struggles in the first season in the Premier League where we barely survived we were much better this season. Our team is coming together very nicely and with better reputation we are also receiving the bigger prospects in the youth team as well. A great league season for us!

League Table

image.thumb.png.db0e421eac499a58e4f81d1408c5e350.png

It went down to the final day to see who nicked the last European spot and with our 2-1 win over Sheffield Utd we took it! Conference League next season will be another great way to spread games!

FA Cup

image.thumb.png.11ba0317c47fbbc7d9d1895bc2769cd5.png

We were unable to defend our title but we did make it to Wembley again, however this time City were much too strong for us in the semi finals!

Carabao Cup

image.thumb.png.9c91019a35efd9dff0115a7d3c4c8915.png

A fully rotated team was knocked out at the first stage!

Europa League

image.thumb.png.c03e2cffeb10108b0fde8f1d9ab1b897.png

Well it was nearly a dream run. Our first season in Europe ended up with us being runners up beating some very established sides on the way!

Goalkeeper Watch

Gelacio scored 7 goals in 47 games and Onoja scored a very impressive 6 goals in 12 games!

Player Review - Hakeem Adobawale (YP38A)

image.thumb.png.4450dedd7d1c3a307d3b2be7cace2eae.png

The big prospect from last years intake is developing nicely and I think towards the backend of next season he will have become our starting left back. He got 20 (5) appearances this season grabbing 1 assist.

Player Of The Season - Niall Smith (YP37A)

image.thumb.png.a9d888d9f2fff20b54d7c18d3eeb0567.png

The amazing partnership between Sheehan and Roberts has been well and truly broken now. Smith played 26 (1) times this season scoring an amazing 17 goals and getting 7 assists with an average rating of 7.37!

Young Player Of The Season - Aidan Kearney (YP36A)

image.thumb.png.6f1e17254f69f0d52256763b259fbf17.png

Could have easily won player of the year. He did play much more games and scored and assisted more (46 (2) appearances scoring 25 and assisting 12)! An amazing record with Ireland as well scoring 13 times in only 10 caps!

Stadium Expansion

image.thumb.png.4086b6e09dadbcc50767899f4bb3f765.png

We have just moved into our new 13k stadium and I have immediately put in expansion plans to expand this to just over 17k! Our new stadium can be expanded to 45k which is great!

Haha we are. I am glad I got the last European spot in the league. It really does help give other players some valuable minutes on the pitch!

Sale

image.thumb.png.f0f15e72f38696922898584d865506c7.png

I would normally just update transfers at the end of the window however this grabbed my attention. Firstly Ricardo (YP32E) has been a very big part of the squad playing over 150 times for the club. He simply wasnt going to be utilised any more. His development had stalled and with some good prospects coming through he would only hinder their progress.

Secondly I have never heard of Alverca . So I had a look and they are a Portuguese 3rd division club. Looking at it more they have not had a takeover so no idea how they have £3m! @Jimbokav1971 have you come across them in your save?

Son Alert!

Never had this before in any FM game I have played but for the first time ever I have had a son come through the youth academy!

image.thumb.png.14f2aba11e02ae8110dc9d2fe07f559f.png

The PA is actually quite a bit off as when I compare it to some others who are deemed 4.5 star potential he is around that level or better! I will be 100% biased in playing him as often as possible!

Europa Conference League

Qualifier & Group Stage

image.thumb.png.98876dbc179ebfcf02eb4b4efafe3f0d.png

The qualifier was tighter than expected with a fairly rotated team. The group stage we battered everyone again with a lot of rotation and game time for our backup players.

image.thumb.png.f73c73996ec41b01a37f21f2ca297910.png

2nd Knockout Stage

image.thumb.png.475d971468fc6258f37ecc7760e10f21.png

One of the toughest draws possible at this stage. Not as much rotation this time but we came through. Nice to see Maton-Bunce get a couple of goals!

Quarter Final

image.thumb.png.7d724eca1491e6675af205e8fcbac5f0.png

Again I would say we got the toughest draw possible and if we got through this then I would say we are favourites for the rest of the competition. A really good away performance enabled us to grab a draw. The second leg again was very tight and it wasnt until the 118th minute in extra time that we edged ahead through a Smith goal!

Semi Final

image.thumb.png.6c15991fcaf524baf69c1d7d4929dd05.png

As mentioned before it was a much easier competition after we knocked out both Wolfsburg and Fiorentina! We thumped Aberdeen at home 5-1 and that enabled us to rest a lot of players for the return leg where we drew 3-3!

Final

image.thumb.png.af0c95aade8e3c2630e9e34436ae7e40.png

A deserved win which wasnt fully confirmed until Smith scored a 94th minute goal on the break! Our first ever European trophy!

image.thumb.png.3a51722347431c5f4c46214cd925607e.png

Again another very solid season for us. We have established ourselves in the Premier League now!

League Table

image.thumb.png.f51be10ea6ae2ec7522f39d8ea373393.png

Our 2nd consecutive 7th place finish is great for us! We could have finished 6th but we lost our last 3 games! Even before our Conference League win we were already back in European football next season!

FA Cup

image.thumb.png.433242086bba139999f4ebf18e166725.png

A poor display in both games by us. We were lucky to get to a replay and in that replay again did not turn up and got punished on penalties!

Carabao Cup

image.thumb.png.91259d0162ed199d2f8ebcb06ab99383.png

A very tough draw for us but a rotated side did brilliantly to bring City to penalties. Unfortunately as like we did in the FA Cup we also lost this one!

Conference League

image.thumb.png.d3718ad4da05da6e944004908bce36c4.png

Amazing! I know its a weak competition but for our little team to be winning a European trophy is a great achievement.

Goalkeeper Watch

Gelacio scored 5 goals in 39 games and Kelly scored 4 goals in 17 games!

Player Review - Edward Felix (YP39A)

image.thumb.png.21f5bf2bfda18982143675082325bbd0.png

Felix has had some great improvement this season and I think he will take over the DMC spot from Gordon this season due to his high potential! He got 1 goal and 6 assists in 24 (5) appearances!

Player Of The Season - Niall Smith (YP37A)

image.thumb.png.d52f4e3b54a7ba1479a35e18e01675a0.png

Another really good season for Smith who has also made his international debut for Northern Ireland. 24 goals and 10 assists in 39 games including scoring in the Conference League final!

Young Player Of The Season - Edwin Kelly (YP39B)

image.thumb.png.91c29e80cb9a8b6b0351a27d0ee471cf.png

Got a lot of games this season as our backup, 17 in total. He has big potential and will usurp Gelacio in a couple of seasons!

Development

CL Push

I have decided to go all out and spend the 200-300m we have saved up and go all out for a few seasons to see if we can win the CL. As this will likely be my last FM game for a while I would love to do it with British Airways!
