Turkey pushed us, and the only goals we have conceded are to each other.

Annoying loss to de Graafschap, and a worrying loss to Inter, especially given that Hertha flogged them 3-0.

Qualified :D I'm also trying a new way to pick the national team, relying on scout opinion rather than the attribute formula. From what I've seen on these forums and elsewhere form can influence opinion of CA, and I think that's an accurate reflection of how these teams should be selected on form. This has resulted in Holland's best Advanced Forward, our own Kyron Polman being dropped as the scouts value other forwards above him, whereas our backup CM Haruna Addo 7A* is good enough to get called up. But it seems to have worked so far, so we'll see how it goes. It also saves time as I don't have to import everything :D

We really turned on the goal scoring domestically this month, including a 3-0 over Twente fielding a very depleted team where a record 5 academy players started. The youth can play!

We struggled against Bilbao due to injuries, but we scrape by. We're rewarded with Sheffield United, currently 5th in the Premier League and the reigning Conference League champions. I like our chances.

Bring it on. City struggled to beat Lazio, so I like my chances. It's also good to see Ajax make it this far as well, every little bit helps the coefficient to chase France down. We are still miles behind them though!

A slight slip up in the friendlies, which leads me to a rethink in selection policy. I'll use the attribute analysis formulae for tournaments (World Cup finals, Euro etc.) and use the scouting methods for all other formats, including qualifiers. For the tournaments I want the best players possible for the formation all in the one place for a while, and tournaments are the best way to cultivate that.

Out of curiosity - what tactic are you playing? And do you tweak it at all?

I chose a Knap tactic based on the formation and similar roles/instructions my coach implemented in the team I was playing in a few years ago. I love 3 at the back, 2 striker formations, and have always tried to use them. The only real tweak I suppose is I don't have any Player Instructions.

I'm recruiting players specifically to fit this formation, and if the players are good enough then (generally) most tactics will have success.

The perfect end to a near perfect season, Ajax proved no match for us in Serbia :D We now have two Europa League titles and 3 European finals in the last 3 years, but the big one still eludes us. We can't be far away now, especially after beating City and Liverpool.

The Squad

89c48a04759c6cac6ffa1a83d7645ac0.png

I've abandoned the age restrictions, which is why you see 37 year old Frenkie de Jong (still starting for Barcelona) in what will be his final competitive matches ever as he announces his retirement. Ajax and Feyenoord still dominate the majority of National Team development, but us, PSV and AZ have 2 each so there's still plenty of variety.

Ideal Starting XI

0950621c66ba29c10d3e921843f731bd.png

f004fed214e2bb822d45e70a60bb9297.png

It's obviously a very old XI, with only 4 players younger than 32. But it's a stronger side on paper than the 2032 Euros, due to the presence of Frenkie de Jong who has an almost perfect rating for a DLP. We're =8th, so I think a quarter final appearance is a realistic expectation.

The Groups

0f88992609ee341b88982b692e65fb33.png

Hosts Japan get a relatively weak but still tough against Panama and Romania, and it could be any of these 3 that progress. Poor Thailand are going to get swamped by Italy and Ecuador, but should be commended on making their 3rd straight World Cup. I expect Denmark and Mexico to comfortably progress, and DR Congo/Paraguay will fight it out to join France.

6a5a9b0e3f03dc5c973d2574c7ed389c.png

Portugal, Argentina and Brazil all get easy groups, but Poland could give Argentina some trouble. Jamaica/New Zealand and Australia/Slovenia will be good battles, and the Republic of Congo will more than likely get flogged in their first ever World Cup. But Group H is really intriguing. Reigning finalists Scotland, AFCON finalists Cameroon and surprise debutants Barbados, who finished above Trinidad and Haiti to get here!

ab92a74b1c8dd5234534dbf66c41c75d.png

Morocco get a tough group, but they could sneak a result over Chile; defending champions Spain should coast through their group and will probably be joined by South Korea; Angola will likely be well beaten by both Sweden and Uruguay; and we get a nice group we should find comfortable to move through.

ee3390507162750f19c36e70bd48591c.png

Syria qualify for their second straight World Cup, get an easier group but will still likely get smashed; England get an easy group; USA (ranked 3rd ), Mali and Ireland is kind of a group of death; and Burkina Faso will get crushed in their 2nd appearance.

Notable Absentees

#18 Senegal: Finished behind Algeria and South Africa in their qualifying group.

#19 Nigeria: Horrendous group, finishing behind Ivory Coast and #27 Ghana but ahead of Egypt.

#25 Serbia: Finished behind England in their qualifying group, and 8th out of 2nd placed teams where the top 6 qualify.

#26 Ukraine: Finished 3rd in their group behind Germany and #47 Albania.

#28 Wales: Finished 3rd in their group behind Ireland and Italy.

#33 Croatia: Finished 3rd behind Slovenia and Switzerland in their group.

#37 Turkey: Finished 3rd in their group behind Holland and Iceland.

#39 Norway: Finished behind Scotland in their group.

#43 Czech Republic: Finished behind Denmark and Spain in their group.

#48 Austria: Finished behind Portugal and Romania in their group.

Friendly Matches

9526c161bd3e8983000fbba6d0734769.png

We defeat Bolivia and the reserves draw with Spain, but it comes at a cost as starting Libero Jurriën Timber hurts his hip and will miss the tournament. Feyenoord's Mitchel Bakker will replace him, and even though he only has 11 caps his club resume includes PSG, Leverkusen and Valencia, so he's no slouch.

Group Stage

8412591074b50a383dfd21feedabc52c.png

Far too close for my liking, and it took a last minute goal by academy product Haruna Addo 7A* to get the win. This does not bode well.

a3a2815a3c87e5ecc617319d9d58a3d9.png

This is much more like it, the game was won even before the red card.

1e3d1bb3e410e0c81b00e0e49a90c5dd.png

Romania top the group, but hosts Japan manage to comfortably qualify as Panama get smashed; Ecuador shockingly tops Group B ahead of Italy; Group C was tighter than first thought, and DR Congo joins France in the Second Round.

d5be26dfb9120bcd0a31f58c128d41ff.png

Everything went as expected with these groups.

Same with these groups actually, how boring!

856664749500e718ba86dc2f102eca45.png

USA dominated Ireland 6-0, but that's the only real noteworthy event here.

0a218d24fd0e73caf77f055b1490c098.png

We draw Uruguay, which is a difficult task, but there are some decent matchups here. France/Denmark, Portugal/Poland, USA/Colombia. It'll start heating up after this round though.

Second Round

An amazing performance, and one I wasn't expecting!

c24a01f215a083e35475b1d15bd60600.png

Romania sent shockwaves through the remaining World Cup nations, knocking Italy out; Ecuador break Japanese hearts, eliminating the hosts in extra time; and everything else happens pretty much according to plan, as Argentina, Brazil and Scotland all have big wins.

ea542fd359d91b84c94a6aa64b79412b.png

Another huge upset here, as Algeria send the English home with the cup, and the Irish took that as encouragement and dispatched Belgium; Germany and USA have big wins; Switzerland bows out allowing Ivory Coast to join Algeria as the last African hopes.

7aa6104d6d738d89c693dbee2374a8e8.png

Well, looks like this is where we will be eliminated, and therefore lose my job as a result. Romania get a chance to become giantkillers once more, two South American heavyweights in Brazil and Argentina face off, and Ivory Coast or Ireland will get a quarter final spot!

Third Round

ea9a265c06f071da6ed07abb0eb40768.png

Um...

So yeah, this happened.

No idea how, of course, we only out xG'd them by .48. Obviously just took our chances a little better!

15a0e5df4e5749e98c562a523bf0c59a.png

Romania's dream run is over at French hands; reigning finalists Scotland have an unceremonious end, Argentina knock Brazil out, and Ireland win the fan favourite quarter finalists spot.

f3f1ca4ddfc1a2fe37104c0629d46c3f.png

We face the Americans in a rematch from 4 years ago. Can we get revenge?

Elsewhere, only Spain seem to have a straightforward game. But anything can happen, we beat the Germans 5-0 after all!

We play Ireland, who took over Romania as the giantkillers, and suddenly a path has opened up where we have a legitimate chance of being champions of the world!

It's really weird, they won the Europa League in between us winning two, giving them qualification to the Champions League even though they finished 17th in the Premier League. The next season, they win the Champions League, but finish 9th in the Premier League. It's really, really strange, but I'm sure any Saints fan would be happy with winning the CL :D

:lol::lol:

Funnily enough, no one in the squad retired after the World Cup, so he'll keep going as long as he's good enough!

I think we'd have no fanbase left. We'd be nervous from the relegation fight and being in a Champions League. That would kill us.

A third of the way into the season and there are still 3 undefeated teams in the league which is pretty cool, and the flogging of Roma in Rome instils confidence in me that we can return to the Champions League knockouts.

Another red card against Germany. The Dutch really do not like these guys!

We've returned to the CL knockouts :D All we need now is for Madrid to draw at Roma, and if we beat Shakhtar we're through as top seed.

We lose to last place Willem II and weren't even FM'd, but apart from that a good month, we're looking strong.

We beat AC Milan at this stage 2 years ago, and again, we're stronger now, so hopefully that translates.

Transfers (Out)

3 backups leave: Bosmans after 96 apps and 43 goals for 3m profit, van Gelderen after 137 apps for 10m profit, and Herold after 223 apps for 8m profit. They'll be missed, but it's time for the youth to step up.

Another loss in the league, but we can extend the lead to 14 if we win our game in hand. We head to the San Siro with the slimmest of leads, but we beat them with both our strikers injured, and I think they'll be back for the trip. So fingers crossed!

Holland is complete :D World champs and CL champs within 12 months, I'd say this was the most successful run so far!
