Set Piece Advice/Tips

Recommended Posts

Hello,

I'm looking for general advice about how to set up corners/free kicks, specifically on the offensive side. I've done research on this topic in the past but I would like to hear what the communities' best advice is.

Thanks

I always think this works, put your tallest player at near post, corner taker aim near post

Player come short to take away one opponent player

Brave/tall player at far post, corner aim (mixed or far post) or mark GK

One player Lurk outside to win 2nd balls or long shot

2 players stay back to avoid counter attack.

Against AI corner attacks, i see AI keep aiming near/far  post where their tallest player is (i change to man Mark tall player to reduce AI chances)

For me, i don't want to exploit too much i put corner aim mixed

FM Rensie is the go to guy for anything on set pieces. He goes into great details about set pieces and the problems with the current set piece ME. The older guides still work as the set piece ME (together with the bugs?) has not changed since FM18. I will also add on a few suggestions of my own here.

1) After you have done setting up your set pieces, make sure you go and watch the replay a couple of times at least to ensure that they work as intended. There have been known issues with the set piece especially with the throw in routines and the deep free kick in the past.

2) Ensure you always put your best headers defending the goal centre area and far post area

3) Ensure that you put players defending the edge of area to reduce the risk of you conceding a long shot after the set piece is being played.

4) Put the right players into the right job. Click on the roles in the set piece editor to know what are the important attributes for each role. For example, players on a marking duty will need to have good marking and concentration attribute.

5) For the attacking set pieces routines, put at least 3 players to stay back if you do not want the other team scoring from a counter after a set piece is being cleared.

6) For the defending set pieces routines, put the quickest players for stay forward duty. You can put 1 or 2 players depending on how much risk you want to take.

7) Vary your set piece routines. There have been changes after FM21 which the AI will adjust how they defend set pieces depending on your most used set piece routines

Tallest player or someone with heading attribute of 17+ attacking the near post, whipped crosses aimed at near post = lots of goals. Issa Diop was my guy in FM20, got over 10 goals in 3 consecutive seasons. Pogba got the job done in FM21.

Also have your best striker standing on the far post to tap in any rebounds from the near post header.

Defensively set up your 2 quickest players, usually wingers and full backs, to stay forward and the 3rd quickest to the edge of the box for the quick counter attack.
