Nice youth intake!

It would be extremely interesting to see what a big club’s (eg Barcelona) youth intake with top facilities gets to compare this intake with your intake with a smaller club with top facilities :onmehead:

Or someone shares an intake to compare the preview and intake.

When the full game comes out, that's exactly what I will do.

My plan, (when the editor is available), is to use the editor to delve into just this sort of thing in this save.

The truth is that while this intake looks amazing, a polished turd looks amazing if you are expecting an un-polished turd.  They might not have the PA that I hope they have. The editor will answer some of these questions for us. Unfortunately we will have to wait a few weeks.

Benfica (SLB). (3 Ukrainians, 1 Angolan, 1 French, 1 Portugese & 1 from Guinea-Bissau).

Sporting Lisbon (Sporting CP). (3 Portugese, 1 Brazilian, 1 Angolan, 1 from Guinea-Bissau & 1 from Cape Verde).

c7ddc67780b002475484967cac4ee238.png

FC Porto. (3 Colombians and 3 Portugese).

Not having managed in Portugal before, I was expecting Portugese/Brazilian and not much else. Loving the variety.

PT Championship. Our Senior squad has been decimated by injuries and our form is suffering as a result. 2 of our best players, (left wing and right back), have both been out and we are not the same without them. While I obviously want to win the title, I sort of think we've won the league already but don't know if the game counts it as us having won the league, (I don't think so), but either way, all we have to do is finish 2nd to get promoted and that will do me fine. We have 4 games left to play and we're 4 points ahead of Louletano, (who we have already beaten). Effectively we need just draw against Louletano, and then take 5 points from the other 4 games. (I think that's right).

Goal-Scoring GKs. This is the 1st month I have nothing to report. He's hit the woodwork a few times from free-kicks, but not got on the score-sheet.

Financesa1f2c839abacd5cac03c8be9eb1a1a6d.png 6b3cc48b5ae8a0b248249ec2ded6ea8b.png I will be much happier when our youngsters are attracting the interest of the Big 3. While the whole ethos behind this save will be trying to stop the Big 3 from poaching our players, I actually need them to come in and give us some money in the short-term. Nobody is even WNT'd by other clubs at the moment.

Squad Selection. May 2022

I'm encountering a problem with Squad Selection that I wasn't expecting.

The Group Stage was fine because I was picking a squad of 18 for each match, 13 of whom had to be HGN.

3907390a960f07584005996a5654f287.png

The Promotion Stage is harder because although we still have to have 13 players who are HGN, we only select a squad of 16.

426b99f0b02bbda07fb41c43fe290351.png

That effectively means that I could select 5 non Portugese grown players in the Group Stage, but I can only select 3 non Portugese grown players in the Promotion Stage

Of the squad I inherited....

Marcelo (BRA) our 1st choice GK is Brazilian with Portugese as a 2nd Nationality, but is not classed as HGN.
Clé (CPV) our 1st choice left winger is from Cape Verdea with no 2nd Nationality, but is not classed as HGN.
Flavinho. (BRA) is Brazilian.
Ortiz (AUS) is Australian.
César Medina (COL) 6'2" was our starting centre-half in the 1st part of the season, but now can't get a game because he learned his trade in Colombia.
Antoniuc (POR) (MDA) HG is only 17 so hasn't yet become HGN.
Slyusar (POR) (UKR) HG is only 16 so hasn't yet become HGN.
Mesquita (POR) HG is only 17 so hasn't yet become HGN.
Pedro Pato is only 16 so hasn't yet become HGN.

So that's 9 players who would all feature for selection, and were here at the start of the game, but I can only pick 3 of them in each squad.

The other thing of course is that I have just had 16 players come through the intake and in order for me to get any of them in the squad, (like  (22g) Banao (CIV) 6'3" who tops the CA list and is already the best player at the club), he has to take 1 of the 3 slots available for players not HGN. That's REALLY hard.

The other thing of course, (as if that wasn't enough), is that where as the U19's have played on different days to the Senior Squad for most of the season so far, they are suddenly playing on the same day.

Thanks very much.

Again, I don't know, (sorry), so let's have a look.

The teams that finish 3rd to 10th go into 12 different groups, (yes really), 1 of which consists of 5 teams and the other 11 consist of 4 teams. Teams play eachother twice and then if you don't finish 1st or 2nd you're relegated, (which means that 25 clubs are relegated). This must be related to the restructuring that is going on in the Portugese pyramid at the moment because that's madness. I will keep an eye on it and see what happens next season.

I'm playing in Portugal (really i'm not following you around!) and have gone 2 seasons in to get a particular team. in the 22-23 season there are 7 groups of 8. Top 2 + 2 3rd place teams go to promotion groups, everyone else into the relegation groups (5 groups of 8, bottom 4 relegated), 1 of the 3rd place teams got relegated.

I'm sure that it's not as complicated as it seems to us. :idiot:

Maybe one of us will have a Portugese reader who will come in and explain things to us. I'm guessing it's a long-term strategy of restructuring, but I'm not sure what the end goal is.

Have you started a thread yet? (Feel free to post it in here).

Tbh I haven't been following this much in recent times so can't help. What I know is there's a centralised 3rd tier now (called Terceira Liga) but I lost my attention beyond that.

Whatever happens they'll get bored of it within 2 years and restructure onto something else anyway. It's like the top tier, they're like a headless chicken, they expand to 20 teams then think the solution to all problems is to have less teams so shrink to 16 teams, then a couple years later "what if we extend to 18????!!!!" etc etc etc

PT Championship. We won the Group Stage and we have won the Promotion stage and we've been promoted, but I don't think we have "won the league" yet. There is a Playoff now against the winners of the Promotion stage league and if we win that then we can say that we have won the league.

Club vision. We've been dead certs for promotion since we smashed whoever we smashed on the opening day of the season. It was great to get it done though.

c802cb2bc289dc15b2966673d34d506e.png

Facilities. With promotion assured, I decided to take advantage of the feel-good factor and after a little bit of pressure on Mr El Presidente we have 2 more upgrades. If you saw how good our 1st Youth Intake was, can you imagine how good the next one might be with a double facility upgrade and a reputation boost from getting promoted and beating 2 teams from the league above in a decent Cup run. :p

Goal-scoring GKs. Marcelo (BRA) is on 9 goals for the season, (8 penalties and 1 direct free-kick), as well as 2 assists, but he has missed a 2nd penalty now that has kept him off double-figure goals for the season, (and our back-up GK also scored a pen while Marcelo (BRA) was off sick with the flu). He could be on 12, but actually he's stuck on 9 with just the PT Championship Champions Playoff Final still to play.

Finances. The budget for next season, (after promotion), erases my concerns about us being over our wage budget, (and explains the 2nd achievement in this post). We are still in the red by a lot, but I have no idea how financially tight things will be next season and to be honest I am just ignoring it. As far as I'm concerned any debt that builds up is not down to me as long as I stay within budgets and I really believe that as soon as our young players start to come of age we will be able to sell them and will soon be rolling in cash.

End of Season summary. 2021/22.

League History. The structure is a little confusing in Portugal at the moment so I'm not sure how useful this will be. It seems to think we were playing in the 3rd tier this season.

PT Cup. We beat 2 teams from the league above and eventually bowed out to a top tier Primeira Liga side in a narrow away loss.

5afa42679aec91c023958652802dbcc8.png

Squad by appearances. After I had the cull of fringe players, we didn't really have much of a choice in who was in the squad because it was 13 HGN players and 3 others.

Squad by CA. 2x 4.0 CA players, 8x 3.5 CA players.

After only coming through the intake this season,  (22g) Banao (CIV) 6'3" is already the best player at the club in terms of CA rating.

(22h) Márcio José (POR) tops the PA list and looks to have something about him but needs to improve physically in order to get in the team.

Goal-scoring GK's. Our GK's scored 10 goals between them this season, but with Marcelo (BRA) seeing 2 of his penalties saved he missed a glorious chance to hit double-figure goals.

Facilities

We've got a few options in terms of improvements facilities. We don't have the money for either Training Facility or Youth Facility upgrades so I'm not going to bother for a while yet, but there are a few options.

A B club is certainly something we will want in the future, but we're not there yet.
The same can be said of an U23 squad. I don't want an U23 squad until we have Academy products who are too old for the U19 squad, (so we have another few years at least).
Not interested in scouting range until we have money to buy some of our old players back.
Senior Affiliate is an option but I think we need to wait for the season to tick over 1st. (I don't want a loan, just for the money).

I think I will do some sort of newgen tracker, but not sure what to track as the proper tracker.

One thing I like to keep track of for my youth players is a top ten for most games, goals, assists, etc., updated at the end of each season. I've hidden an example below.

That being said, I am doing a 'normal' save rather than youth only, so it's easier to track the few players that break through rather than a whole squad of them.

B Team. Jun 2022

I've never formed a B Team before and I'm not completely sure how this works.

Has this been triggered because we're no longer going to be playing in the bottom playable tier and the B Team will play in the tier we played in last season? Or will they be "playing" in non-playable blackness?

I still think I'm going to put it off for a while. I don't have any players to play in the B Team yet and I don't want them to have to sign players. The idea is that players go U19's - B Team - Senior Team. I don't know where U23's will fit into that either. Is it either/or U23's/B Team?

Thanks. That's just what I was looking for. Brilliant. :applause: The reason I wasn't coming up with that sort of thing was because I was thinking of club achievements, but to be honest that's dull in a Youth Only save like this. It's not about the club. It's about the players.

ps. I think you are slightly over-reliant on Wardlow (21b).

I hate this page. Jul 2022

Of all the pages we see in FM, this is the page I hate the most. I only ever see it at the start of saves because I would rather miss out on signing a player than agree to a yearly wage rise, or a bonus for sitting on the bench. It really annoys me.

d66ce36ef2b2ff6995b4a739847c1efb.png

I worked out recently, (FM21), how much this cost when used regularly like this and it was just madness. I would rather just give players/agents a HUGE great bloomin cash payment/bonus/bung right at the start, because at least they appreciate the bung. At least you get something for your money. This is just wasteful. Players/agents don't even care when you remove it. It's just a ridiculously expensive freebie!

Can you tell I'm properly annoyed?

[Edit]

No, none of the 1st intake are on that list lower down, just in case you were wondering. :stop:

Scouting. Jul 2022

I reported this as a bug, but don't think I gave it much of a mention in the actual thread.

When I play a Youth Only save, I allow myself to re-sign players who came through the Academy of the club, (or were poached from the Academy). It's really easy to find these players. I just go Scouting - Players - Player Search - Edit Search - Add condition - Home-grown status, Is, Trained at club, Belenenses

It will give me a list of everyone who has spent 3 years at the club under the age of 21 and I can check to see if they started there or moved there after coming through elsewhere. Easy!

Well at least it would be if you were able to enter a club rather than a Nation! I keep thinking there must be a workaround for this but I'm damned if I can think of it. Any suggestions?

Since this is a "unique" case of a team split into two recently, what happens if you search for players trained at the evil Belenenses?

I can't search for any club. That's the problem. It's pre-set to search for Nations. There are 6 options on the drop-down menu and the top 3 are HGN options. These need Nations as the search option. The bottom 3 are HGC options. These need Clubs as the search option. All 6 just offer Nations. :(

The 1st thing I notice is that it no longer tells you which club the player originates from, so if you have poached a player, (can you still poach a player?) then you don't know who it is when they come through the intake.

The intake distribution appears to include players who already exist in the U19's squad. There are 16 in this intake and 26 on the graphic below so there should be 10 players in the U19 squad.... but there are actually 12, minus 1 who is out on loan = 11. How does 16 + 11 = 26?  I know this isn't a big deal but....... stuff like this needs to make sense to me for me to be ok with it and move on, but this doesn't make sense.

943a7c8082edeaf4c85adda32aca4c9d.png

  • The 1st thing that jumps out at me from this page is obviously the 7x 5.0 PA players and the 3x 4.5 PA players. This really is a hell of an intake, (but I was expecting it to be decent, especially after I got a double upgrade so early in the save).
  • The 2nd thing that jumps out at me is the CA. As good as the PA is, the CA is bloomin amazing!
  • The 3rd thing that catches my eye is the Determination values. 18, 18, 17, 17, 19, 16, 20 & 17. WTH!  I've never seen that before. Why is it so high I wonder?
  • The 4th thing. Obviously not as good at the Det values, but the Workrate looks decent too. 14, 12, 13, 14, 15, 13, 11, 13, 12. I know they are yellow rather than green, but this is still good. This is still really good.
  • Lastly, (and obviously linked to Determination), personalities. Driven, Driven, Resolute, Determined, Determined.

I think I'm going to show you all the 5.0 PA players.

I think that you will agree that just 1 of those players would have been brilliant. To get all of them together, (and the others aren't rubbish), has blown my mind. Of course I picked this club on purpose because of the good facilities. Of course I did. But I certainly wasn't expecting this!

Woah.

1st match in Tier 3. Aug 2022

I'm not completely sure what these stats and this result tell us, other than how important a Vardyesque striker is. We battered them and somehow came away with a 3-0 loss.

It might be telling us that we are a little short of quality up front.

Ortiz (AUS) played as an AF up front on the left. He had 0 shots either on or off target and he's meant to be our main goal threat. I really dislike his PPM and I'm on the 2nd attempt at trying to get him to un-learn it. I may have to stop playing him until it's gone.

The 1st thing to say is that there is a naming issue with the 3rd Tier of Portugese football. It should be split into a geographic North/South split, but both the North League and the South League are both called Portugese Third Division - North First Stage. This error has already been reported by others.

ca27532dd468d05d6f45dc3f485b1884.png

Each team plays eachother twice, (so 22 games), and then the top 4 in each group go into a Promotion Stage with the Winner promoted and the Runner Up entering a Playoff against..... actually no. The top 4 from each North/South league don't merge together. They stay separate and for 2 mini leagues of 4. They play eachother twice, (6 games), and then the winners of each group get promoted and then the 2 Runners Up playoff against eachother to enter a Playoff against the 3rd bottom team in the league above. Simple right.

64832a5e6838b201412300b4aad80b08.png

This says that both top teams enter a Champions Playoff, but I think that's just to decide who the winner is and they both still get promoted. I think.

0e8a0c91d7b3e05fc1eac8235a02e0e2.png

With regards to the Relegation Stage, (which we are far more likely to be participating in), 16 teams create 4 groups of 4 with each team playing the others twice, and then the bottom team in each group is relegated, (so 4 relegation spots).

Is this really what Portugese football fans want? :idiot:

Portuguese Third Division South. I dropped Ortiz (AUS) to the bench after the 1st game, (he of the plays with back to goal PPM), and we haven't looked back. His replacement David Brazão (POR) bagging a brace in the 3rd game.

Goal-scoring GK's. Marcelo (BRA) might have scored a penalty in the 2nd game, but he saw another one saved in the 3rd game meaning that he now 9/12 at 75%.

Records. A 2nd player from the 1st intake has already made his debut.

I knew that "Tactical Style" was in previous versions. What I meant was that I had never seen "Wing Play" as a tactical style before.

Ahh I can see you're a man that likes to gamble. Best of luck with that!

My bad, I'll keep an eye out for it. I'll be on FM21 for a while and I'm constantly checking personalities of potential staff so I'm bound to come across it if it isn't a new thing.

It's not so much that I like to gamble as I like to be lazy. Don't get me wrong, once our reputation improves I will hand-pick a better HoYD and probably other staff too, but at the moment we're in the Portugese lower leagues so any difference the personality of a staff member is going to make is really going to be negligible.

At the moment we only have 3 youth products, (that have come through under my tenure), in the match squad. (22g) Banao (CIV) 6'3" is a starting centre-half, (22d) Couceiro (POR) is a tiny midfield playmaker on the bench and (22e) Capucha (POR) is an attacking midfielder that I am playing up front but who starts on the bench. I can only select 5x non HGN players in the squad and GK Marcelo (BRA) is the 1st and left-winger Clé (CPV) is the 2nd so there is only space for 3 more. Once the players gain HGN status it should become easier.

PT 3rd Division South. I'm delighted with our performance in the league because we're much improved after I dropped the striker who liked playing with his back to goal. It might work as a DLF, but it certainly does not work as an AF.

3rd division seems to have started well. The money deficit doesn’t seem to be causing too much of an issue either.

How long does it take your youth intake players to get HGN again?

Yeah, as soon as I dropped the bloke who likes to play with his back to goal we have really kicked on. He's the best player, but with that PPM it just doesn't work. If he un-learns it I will give him another go, and he might get a game at DLF but even that's not ideal. I don't want to change the way we play just because I want to play him. I would rather drop him.

I'm just ignoring the money. El Presidente invested 4ca56262903b9b9eba84b0bc1201b58e.png last season to help with running costs and we're already b2eefe3274542af550e5b013f715972a.png overdrawn at the bank so he will need to dig deep again pretty soon.

The way that transfer/player values is done has changed in FM22 and now rather than a single amount you have a range between £xx and £yy like this in the right hand column.

e3bd0708e4bcd01f0a9341884c1a47c5.png

(22g) Banao (CIV) 6'3" starts every game already so I'm looking at the £450k upper end of his valuation and liking it.

(22e) Capucha (POR) hasn't started yet but recently set the league record for youngest ever goal-scorer. I would expect his range to rocket over the next half season or so.

(22d) Couceiro (POR) is a DLP that I try to get on the pitch somewhere in each game.

We can only pick 3 youngsters at the moment because of the HGN but I wouldn't hate the idea of selling any of these, (for the right price with some nice add-ons), and then replacing them with another youngster.

HGN is 22190a441459528a368a1ae342e00fad.png but I'm a little confused.

This graphic seems to suggest that we have 7 players who are gaining HGC status this month, but I'm not sure if they will get HGN status at the same time as they gain HGC status. (It make sense that they would. This is going to make a huge difference to my ability to select youngsters if this works as I think it does.

Job interviews. Nov 2022

The last time I did a Youth Only save, (Level 9/10 in England with Irchester Utd), I tracked the interviews/jobs I was offered and it might add some depth to the save if we keep a track of who wants me, (if anyone wants me).

Both clubs are in the league above us and it's interesting to compare their wage budgets of £117k and £96k per month to our paltry...... oh.  Our budget is actually £159k per month. We already have a bigger budget than both of them. In my head we are a small club but the reality is that we're not. We're a big club fallen on hard times.

Even if this wasn't going to be a 1-club save, there is nothing to leave Belenenses and move to either of these clubs for, (although Varzim at least appear to be a good fit in terms of club culture.).

Portuguese Third Division South. We lost against Amora because the U19's played on the same day and I lost most of the squad to the U19's game. I ended up starting not 1 but 2 orange injured players and had grey players making up the numbers on the bench. I'm quite surprised we kept it even close. The União draw on the other hand was completely the opposite as they battered a full-strength us worse than anyone has battered us so far in this save, but we somehow scored twice and came away with a draw. We've lost twice this season and are just 1 point off the top of the table and 4 points clear of the league split. Got to be happy with that.

I know very little about Portugese football, but I know Vit. Setúbal are a big club and I don't really understand what they are doing down here in the 3rd tier with us.

9c9f05cf9293e55f70a183bdea73c87d.png

It seems as if they narrowly avoided relegation from the top tier at the end of the 2019/20 season but for reasons that are not completely clear, they breached league rules and were relegated not 1 but 2 Divisions.

97f116952e33aef56f311e6fdb644397.png

As you would expect they are in financial trouble now, (even if they weren't before), with players being paid top tier wages but very little money coming in to balance the books, (especially over Lockdown). In another save I would love to manage a team like this, but I'm not moving for anyone. I will apply for the job though because they are a big club despite being in the 3rd tier.

To put things in perspective as to how tough things are for them, forget comparing their wage budget to ours, our actual wage spend, (not the budget but how much we are actually spending), is more than their budget, (and we have a squad of kids).

If anyone is looking for a cool long-term save in Portugal, look no further than Vit. Setúbal.

If there are any Portugese readers in here or even anyone who has knowledge of Portugese football, please feel free to comment on this.

During the interview there was a question about a "historic rivalry" between the clubs that is shown on their club profile but not on ours.

Not sure this is really a bug, I've seen it before it previous FM, in some cases only one of the club sees the other as rivals... even in real life I dont think it's always 100% reciprocal.

Transfers. Feb 2023

The window closes without any serious offers for our youngsters and I'm starting to wonder if they are as good as I think they are, or if they just appear good in comparison to the rubbish we already had at the club.

Centre-half (22g) Banao (CIV) 6'3" is top of both the CA and PA lists. That's good in 1 respect because it means the level of the best player at the club is improving, (so the level against which everyone else is judged is also improving),

We have 17 players at the club with 5.0 PA and I've been trying to give them game-time where possible, but when we're sitting close to the top of the league it's hard to blood below-par players and risk performances/results.

039229c099747a61cba8e3fb4058ffff.png

Antoniuc (POR) (MDA) HG is wanted by 53c0a86e5b9313c432c4d062b537e136.png who are in the Championship (Tier 4).

Becksquita (POR) HG is wanted by the same club and that's it for our 5,0 PA players.

If the players were as good as I hoped, then I'm sure other clubs would be at least interested in them by now. :(

[Edit]

Now I think about it, the reason for this poor youth intake preview could simply be that the level against which they are judged has risen.

Youth Intake day. Mar 2023

The intake preview suggested that this wasn't going to be as good as last season.

fd4fdb8d1a6b42713cf21d9d5b6a1d87.png

It could still be a Golden Generation though.

Time will tell, but the PA appears similar to last season, but the CA looks worse, (but of course the level against which the CA is being judged this year is higher than last year).

I'm not sure this following graphic is too important.

b5d1dfea384bb57c2459ce8685a56582.png

5x 5.0 PA players and 2x 4.5 PA players. Can't complain with that.

36ffa9eab1026d9436327a225881ed58.png

  • The Det values are decent, although not as good as last year. Just 2 players below 9.
  • The Workrate values are ok, but again not as good as last season.
  • 5x players with 2.0 CA.
  • Lots of nice Nationalities and 2nd Nationalities.
  • A Model Citizen.
  • A casual. :thdn:
  • Where are all the Brazilians?

(23a) Rosado (POR) looks ok, but he's really weak physically and we have so many decent young players for this role who are going to be ahead of him. That being said we're building a club and need depth for U19 squad and possibly U23 squad and B Team in the future so he will be given time to develop.

d19f5ad918ecf38544d9896d4fd8027e.png

(23b) Vasconcelos (POR) I quite like. Very decent physically for a 15 yo but the Bal attribute lets him down. The only real issue with him is that he is a proper winger rather than inverted.

134c17aa1102e4c8753337fd5080d1f9.png

(23c) Lopes (POR) (CPV) I really like. He has the basis of a very goof framework of abilities for a full back. In a save like this we're going to have to have lots of depth because sooner or later bigger teams are going to start coming in and picking decent players off. This guy will definitely play for the Senior Team at some point.

4ceab3758f6d927280d9a9afae172852.png

(23d) Hugo (POR) looks amazing. I mean I REALLY like him for the left hand side AF role. You can see that Rúben Araújo (POR) is already plateauing out and won't improve much more, and then obviously we have Ortiz (AUS) who keeps playing with his back to goal, but after that we have decent potential but pretty flawed players. (23d) Hugo (POR) is pretty close to being the best of the rest.

d48e4d2eb3e4343e88aea441c42f912f.png

(23e) Valente (POR) is a much-needed GK. I look at his technique level of 10 and I see free-kicks soaring over the wall and into the top corner!

As he is our best player and is obviously still developing, I was expecting that we might have fewer 5.0 PA players. That would seem not to be the case yet.

This is the squad by PA. No less than 23x 5.0 PA player, 16 of whom have come through the intake in the last 2 years and 7 who were already at the club.

Portuguese Third Division South. We finished the First Stage top of the league and a massive 10 points clear of 5th placed team. Louletano. The problem is that none of our points carry over to the next phase, so should I be rotating my squad more and finishing just inside the top 4? I think I possibly should. This whole, league and then a league and then a Playoff thing is so alien to me.
