Football's Greatest Managers: #20 Guy Roux | The Equaliser

Part 2: Roux The World

(credit @Deisler26 for the title :brock:)

A fresh start for Balmont as he swaps the riches of Dijon for their rivals Auxerre after a successful interview.

Balmont had always admired what legend Guy Roux had done there so it's time to put them back off the map and chase down old club Dijon with vengeance.

2c7beaf97596f285eb96bae874b2c0d0.png

It's been a quarter of a century since Auxerre were last in the top flight and they now sit as a mid-table 3rd tier side. Last year the club even lost it's professional status! Stade Abbe-Deschamps is in a very poor condition; it's crumbling down.

Auxerre are in ruins, all while their rivals Dijon are in the limelight.

5be8ff4bf8692c8bbc3832561f06ea60.png

Despite the clubs poor status, the board want to build the best youth system in the country. Balmont, you have a mission!

Financially, Auxerre are in trouble. The balance is awful, the club is crippled with net debt and one of Balmont's first tasks is to half the wage bill. It's likely only young lads will be left.

Sacrebleu! Looks like a firm challenge, good luck!

Thanks, it's definitely a firm challenge, hopefully I can turn them round quite quickly otherwise we'll be staring at a financial abyss...

This is a huge challenge, but Auxerre are known for their ability to develop good young players, so it's a good fit.

Yes, I imagine 'youth importance' for the club is high so hopefully we'll bring some good youngsters through. The facilities are good for the level.

The lack of international caps for Vega is weird.

Good Luck for part 2!

He got called up to the squad a couple of times but never capped. France are current World Champions and have so many good strikers though. Cheers!

We've had to let a few players go, mostly at the end of their contracts, but we cashed in on Rivenet for a good chunk of money. He was on £3.3k a week and wanted to leave. We could have kept him and he would have been class in the advance forward role but it didn't make financial sense.

16th July 2035: Meeting The Squad

b005be7069bf6ec0377b507e3ae91730.png

The squad has been majorly streamlined, partly through necessity of getting the wage bill down and partly due to several big players not wanting to even consider new contracts. This is a young team, filled mostly of academy products. There are 18 first team players which is very small but there's a lot of versatility within the squad. We also have 9 players in total in the 2nd  / U19s setup, none of which are good enough to threaten breaking in to the first team but can cover in a crisis - our 2nd team will really struggle this season while playing just 1 league below!

Denis --- Diop

Konate --- Lekue -- Carrasco --- Boulanger --- Belhadj

Nguidjol --- Rougier --- Gros --- Touati --- Oudin --- Babin

Barbier --- Schmitt --- Mukendi --- Riou --- Brassier --- Blanc

This isn't a great side and the fact that we're predicted to finish 13th at 33/1 for promotion reflects this. However, there is plenty of room for development. Touati is our best player, but the one I'm most excited about is Schmitt who could turn into a decent traditional winger. Up front we've got some pace, but with finishing of 3,5,6 and 8 we're going to squander a lot of chances.

2035-36 Mid-Season Update

National

Starts don't get much better than winning your first games 5-0 and 6-1! We were brought back down to earth after that, but overall a terrific first half of the season.

69d57e486dade8d6e09f226cc8cebc24.png

We're sitting firmly in 2nd place with a 5 point cushion from 3rd place Grenoble but we're 6 points off Boulogne, whom we managed to beat. Hopefully we can keep this up and gain promotion back to the 2nd tier.

Coupe de France

So far we haven't faced anyone able to cause us problems in the cup, but Le Mans will be a tough game. Winnable, though.

Player Stats

Blance, despite his finishing of 4, has been great in front of goal, while Schmitt lived up to the hype I'd given him by both scoring and creating goals.

A little bit more money on the balance sheet which is no longer negative, while three bank loans have been reformed into one over a shorter period of time. £140k p/m is steep, but at this rate Auxerre should be out of debt in 10 years.

A sneak peak at Dijon shows that they're still doing well under new boss Etienne Capoue. His marquee signing was 32-year-old Jude Bellingham, while he let go of the talented Jaziri.

We only picked up 1 point in our last two games so we ended up miles behind Boulogne but the job had already been done. After a 5 year stint in the National Auxerre are back in Ligue 2 :)

Player Stats

b57bfcaea27e84f7c9e7549bf123b1fa.png

Our small squad was stretched to it's limits with lots of players feeling jaded, but we got through it and next season we'll have a few more youngsters to promote to the first team and share the load.

Finances

63c45892f1966b4035972cf785763540.png

The jump to Professional doesn't help the clubs finances at the moment, but we're under the proposed budget and bigger crowds await in Ligue 2. Perhaps some TV money too?

Key Players

597cfcee6550acb1d2fb4f4d0c6d486b.png

Schmitt is a traditional winger that uses pace and unpredictability to beat his man and whip balls into the box. He's also aggressive and hard-working which is exactly the kind of winger that fits in nicely with the high pressing Sacchi-style.

0a40b4cebf16d97d6bef9930d92ff23b.png

Blanc is pretty woeful technically and mentally, but his athleticism makes him an asset as our advanced forward. Whether he can keep it up in Ligue 2 is another matter.

0ad1e5a3e3926d1d20eec82503a7ba60.png

Lekue may not have the highest ratings overall, but he's developed very nicely and I reckon he could be a key player for years to come.

7fc5fe965109fa03d8ca0977c5fa72d2.png

Belhadji can play either full back roll comfortably and he's a quality all rounder. He's still got room to grow which I feel makes his 'high' wage worthwhile.

ed54a93e7cc6960a63926e66d2702a04.png

Touati was the stand out player at the start of the campaign but some of thr youngsters have caught him up. He doesn't add too much in terms of joining the attack, but he's defensively solid and can ping a pass.

2036-37 Mid-Season Review

Ligue 2 Results

0d9beab223db3eaf239009efa598f762.png

I was pleased with the narrow loss to Bordeaux as they're a much superior side, then we hit a shockingly good run of form! The only team to really carve us apart have been Le Havre, while we've maintained an unbeaten record at home. It's great to see our attendances heading towards five figures :D.

Ligue 2 Table

20614c0e809e2b3ac275bb6e58b8bd2d.png

17 games left and we're in a promotion hunt! I was hoping to consolidate and develop the young players this season but they lads have had other ideas. It's very tight between the top 3 and then there are a host of teams vying for the playoff spots. Let's hope we can maintain our form.

Coupe de France

38e2da11144f0f03fdda70d14c286690.png

Our 2nd string beat a Martinique side to setup a tricky 9th round tie away at Bordeaux.

Player Stats

9425925e2ce7b0cae95c7f5e27500f7e.png

I was worried Blanc would struggle to make an impact at this level but if anything he's been even more prolific. Likewise Schmitt has shown that he's capable of excelling in the 2nd tier, smashing the average rating records.

Miscellaneous

Another promising preview for our upcoming youth intake. I hope the centre back lives up to the hype he's been given!

85e292ccea56dc090742abf7eb466354.png

I don't think I'd properly posted up our facilities so here they are. A good base, but given our financial situation there won't be any upgrades anytime soon. Also the iconic Stade Abbe-Deschamps is crumbling :(.

TV money in the Ligue 2 is quite decent (about 5M per year iirc?) so that should go a long way in keeping you afloat until you reach the Ligue 1. And I'd say a back to back promotion is very much on the cards, after which it's just a matter of surviving that first season with the big boys. ;)

Yeah raking in £360k a month in TV money which isn't bad at all. If we do manage to get back-to-back promotions I'm not relishing the prospect of facing Dijon, PSG, Monaco or Lyon with this squad!

I had the same worries with Orléans but in the end, it's against the 'smaller' clubs that you need to get the points and that usually tends to work out quite okay.

Youth Intake 2037

14692e6bfd5f69a64fc8b0ea8413c03c.png

Le Grand --- Lagourde --- Diallo --- Prevel --- Amrani --- Bakayoko

This is a fantastic intake :D. Le Grand is first team level already which is outstanding for a young keeper. Lagourde is a solid defensive option while Diallo is a hard-working two footed DM. Prevel will need to be re-trained as a defensive midfielder but he's got great potential, while 4 star prospects Amrani and Bakayoko complete a sextuple that will be knocking on the first team door as soon as they are able to be registered.

Results

20414f499ba319f0437d3153a4c407f3.png

Obviously the cup run to the final against Lille overshadows the results in the league, however we've been in solid form and we've beaten some big clubs such as Metz, Guingamp and Strasbourg. The only real poor result was the home loss to a struggling Ajaccio.

Ligue 2

52326f0550d65246912d0f6031754707.png

Top of the league on goal difference with just 6 games left to go.

Fixtures

e017b1476bd24f05483eef48a3e67b86.png

All of the teams we face except Bordeaux on the final day are in a relegation scrap or mid-table. The odds are in our favour, but sometimes that's when it falls apart. Then of course there's the Coupe de France final to think about!
