AC Milan v Tottenham Hotspur (Europa League QF, 1st leg)

[This post will be updated when the match has been played].

As there's been some healthy discussion about Stuniverse's Job Security since I started the above post, I just wanted to let you know the Europa League Quarter-Final 1st leg between AC Milan and Tottenham Hotspur is now in the history books and the post has been updated on the previous page of this thread.

I've also quoted it below for ease of reference.

This was one of those freak results that happen every now and then. To be honest, I can't explain it, but I'm very angry and annoyed with our defending, our non-existent defending, to be 3-0 down inside quarter of an hour is not acceptable. The players are better than that, they know they are better than that, and once we started to change things around they showed that, but you can't give teams with the quality AC Milan have a 3-0 head start and expect to get anything out of the game.

When we went 2-0 down we changed from 4-3-3 Wide to 4-2-3-1 Wide.

152i_Milan.png.bc6366ac05fd09a95d39d0e0e81ffb94.png

At half-time, trailing 4-1 with our goal coming in added on time from Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg, we changed to 4-4-1-1.

152j_Milan.png.561f71d794f9a3ab6b10233f344cb296.png

On the hour mark, trailing 5-1, we made some substitutions, including taking off Harry Kane, and went 4-4-2.

152k_Milan.png.8d06334080614839bde5f9741a8d1524.png

It worked in so much as we pulled things back to 5-3 with goals from Sergio Reguilon and Matt Doherty (our two wide midfielders) but then we let Milan score again before the final whistle.

Hard to find any positives after that apart from scoring three away goals which, in normal circumstances, would be a good thing but, with a three goal deficit, we have a lot of work to do in the second-leg at home before those away goals become a telling factor.

A tough run of matches to have to get 10 points from, especially considering current form, what's the plan if you don't hit the target? Work under someone else?

Yes, very tough, @Makoto Nakamura.

To be honest, I’m focussing on how to get 10 points from those five matches (which will be even more difficult with the injuries and fatigued players) that I haven’t really thought about what happens if I get fired…

With so many players injured or fatigued, after an away game in Milan on Thursday, I've decided to go with the 11 who finished the Europa League Quarter-Final, 1st leg against Milan. They ended that game strongly and deserve to go again. It also means Eric DierHeung-Min Son and Harry Kane get a well-deserved rest. Hopefully we won't need them but, if we do, they can come off the bench.

Football can be a cruel game at times. We picked a team to frustrate and contain Chelsea and hopefully knick a goal at the other end. In the first-half, that almost worked to perfection. We did frustrate and contain them.

At the other end Sergio Reguilon hit the post, then he forced Edouard Mendy into a sensational save, and then, under pressure from Carlos ViniciusKurt Zouma knocked the ball past Mendy, it looked like it was going to roll in for an own goal but Mendy managed to get back and scramble the ball away.

After the break, we looked comfortable until Japhet Tanganga got caught in possession on the halfway line and Chelsea attacked quickly and took the lead.

It looked game over when Chelsea were awarded a harsh penalty when Toby Alderweireld challenged for the ball, but our captain Hugo Lloris brilliantly saved Timo Werner's spot-kick.

We kept going and pressed for an equaliser. The referee awarded us a penalty when Heung-Min Son was fouled, and we were confident Harry Kane would convert it, only for VAR to rule it just outside the penalty area. Chelsea cleared the free-kick and the referee blew the final whistle.

I notice you don't use a defensive midfielder (or a central midfielder with a defend duty) in any of your formations, but especially in the 4-2-3-1. I wonder if that is causing issues in terms of goals leaked.

It’s a good observation, @Djecker, and that could be the case. I may try that in the next couple of Cup games - Milan and Swansea - to see if it makes any difference before the run of four EPL games where I need 10 points from 12 to save my job!

Debts and loan repayments

155a_debts.thumb.png.9f64dae1b70adfcb02788b420e5898c0.png

I wondered why our bank balance was dropping so dramatically month-by-month (from approximately £262M at the start of the save to just over £6M today) and then I remembered the loans.

155b_debts.thumb.png.5853ff220144f2da19de27739b7b8611.png

I assume this £633M loan at £3.1M a month until 30/06/2023 is something to do with the stadium. @LATB do you know?

At least the loan repayable at £22M per month has been paid off.

Tottenham Hotspur v AC Milan (Europa League QF, 2nd leg)

Selecting a team for tonight, and setting us up tactically, is really difficult because we've left ourselves a mountain to climb with the three goal deficit from the first-leg in Milan.

We need to score a minimum of three goals, three goals more than they get, if we are to progress. We have to take risks and, in doing so, we will leave gaps and ourselves open at times. And we know Milan are a very strong team with, arguably, the world's best goalkeeper in Gianluigi Donnarumma.

I'm going to take onboard @Djecker's advice and ask the central midfielders to be more defensive allowing my wing-backs and wingers to push-on and attack.

Let's see how we get on.

158h_Milan.png.a245d06ba880ea957adee47471bc2beb.png

158i_Milan.png.41b38a740e1e3ea82f6538bf7ff936a4.png

We're out! And that's very disappointing to go out in the Quarter-Final.

But I'm not disappointed in the players tonight, in fact I'm proud of each and every one of them, they faced mission impossible after the first-leg and gave it everything from first whistle to last.

The game started very promisingly for us and we cut the three goal deficit to just one with superb goals from Heung-Min Son and Andreas Voglsammer in the first quarter of an hour and then Donnaruma made a stunning save to prevent Andreas Voglsammer levelling it on aggregate.

But AC Milan showed what a very good team they are and fought back to 2-2 on the night.

After the break we kept going. Erik Lamela edged us ahead again at 3-2 but we were unable to build on it. Once again, story of our season, we created more than enough chances but didn't get enough efforts on target. As we pushed forward, we left gaps, and Milan equalised before the end.

Tonight we played very well under very difficult circumstances. We didn't lose the tie tonight, we lost it in the first-leg with an unacceptable 3-6 loss.

Well I’m disappointed that Levy has made this decision and also very happy with that Semi Final result! That’s for you Daniel Levy 😂

Thanks for your support, @samboing.

I don't get what Daniel Levy was doing.

Firstly, he gave me five Premier League games to get 10 points to save my job and then he goes back on that agreement and fires me with four of those five games remaining.

Secondly, we played AC Milan on Thursday evening at home. So why did he wait until Sunday, the day of the FA Cup Semi-Final against Swansea City, to sack me. In doing so, he gave poor Teddy Sheringham hardly any time at all to prepare the team.

I’m not sure, @Folayinka I’m going to track Tottenham’s progress for the rest of the season, see who they bring in to replace me, and see if any jobs come up that interest me at the end of the season.

Currently, the highest profile English club available is Sunderland in League One but, with FM22 coming out on 9th November, I’m only interested in something short-term as I have two ideas for FM22 Career Update saves that really excite me.

Thanks, @g1nh0. That’s very kind and nice of you to say. I’m glad you’ve enjoyed it.

I started doing Career Updates on here with FM19 and FM20 and really enjoyed it. I picked the wrong save for FM21, got through two or three seasons, but lost interest in it. This save has been my return to Career Updates with FM21 and I’ve loved it, despite the outcome.

As I mentioned above, I have two Career Update saves planned for FM22 and I can’t wait to get started on them.

That would be something, wouldn't it? Arsenal are currently 5th with six games to go, on the same points as 4th placed Chelsea with a game-in-hand and 10 points clear of Leicester City in 6th.

165a_forum.png.fcc9493368f5a6d45d0351781f7e8e88.png

I’m still annoyed at the manner of my sacking and that Daniel Levy reneged on his word. I was given five Premier League games to get 10 points and save my job. Yes I lost 0-1 to Chelsea (a) but that still left four games to get 10 points, unlikely against Everton (H), Man City (a), Aston Villa (H) and Crystal Palace (a)… but possible, and I'd planned some ideas (including using at least one more defensive minded MC, @Djecker). I was looking forward to the challenge a lot.

For Mr. Levy to go back on his word like that… well, let’s just say I wasn’t happy.

That's really unfortunate

I know, @karanhsingh. I was really annoyed and disappointed. So much for five EPL games to save my job... let's give you one EPL game and sack you on the morning of an FA Cup semi-final.

it's hilarious that they then went and lost to Swansea

Absolutely. Take that, Mr Levy!

Would love to see you continue this save and eventually get the arsenal job and give it back to spurs!!

I will keep this save ticking along for now, but I'm very keen to make an early start with FM22 so I won't do anything other than short-term now on this save.

Just caught up reading this on a night shift at work.

Hindsight is a wonderful thing. But Chelsea at home earlier in the season was a 2-0 win? The only original big six team you took points from? I'd maybe have been a little more proactive in that game even though it was away from home.

Would 10 points from 5 games have given you an outside shot at Champions league qualification? That's the only real reason I can see for the change in decision. That not gaining Champions league football was the ultimate line. While having the back door of the Europa League available to get you there. Then it wasn't an instant sacking. Once you were out, and you hadn't picked up a point in the first of the five games. Then the axe fell.

Maybe they also didn't want to give you the chance to muddy the waters by securing a domestic cup final.

Who knows. Like you I'm looking forward to FM22. I've got a save idea I've not tried before. Will be looking out for what your planning to do.

Yes, you are correct there and, I must admit, the previous results was something I hadn’t considered. In my head, all the original big six had beaten us comfortably I’d forgotten that we beat Chelsea using a 4-2-3-1 system. I couldn’t have gone with the exact same lineup as two players (Aurier and Sissoko) had left the club in January.

My plan was, to go more defensive and counter-attacking against Chelsea and Man City with the aim of getting at least a point from those two games and then look to win three games against Everton, Aston Villa and Crystal Palace.

No. Mathematically we were only ever in with an outside shot at Europa League qualification, we weren’t going to break into the Top Four.

Our only chance of Champions League was by winning the Europa League and, given the sacking came after AC Milan knocked us out of the Europa League I think that was the trigger. It surprised me they waited from Thursday night (when we were knocked out) to the Sunday morning (when we were due to play the FA Cup Semi-Final that afternoon) to actually fire me.

They certainly did that with Jose Mourinho in real life.

Thanks. I’ll update about my FM22 plans in this thread and I usually start a thread on here for each Career Update save a couple of weeks ahead of actually starting the save for real (like I did at the start of this save) so that I can set the scene and raise a bit of awareness.

Coffee with my agent

Stuniverse: Well it's great to catch-up in person again, Stan.

zzzz_StanleyBaryla1.png.268f031e3e97bf4f105d217d5118d839.png

Stanley Baryla: Likewise. Sorry to see how things ended with Tottenham. I thought we had at least a five Premier League game extension agreed with Mr Levy but...

zzzz_Adventure_Stuniverse8.png.40f52b9c19e5e75f0cdc840b76a3b88c.png

Don't worry about it, Stan. I was angry at the time, but it's happened now. I cant change it. And thanks to the contract you and your team agreed, they paid me a helluva lot of money so, financially, my family and I shouldn't have to worry now.

zzzz_StanleyBaryla1.png.268f031e3e97bf4f105d217d5118d839.png

I've registered your application for the Chelsea vacancy. There's a few other top flight vacancies around Europe. Are you interested in managing in Spain, Portugal... Holland maybe?

zzzz_StanleyBaryla1.png.268f031e3e97bf4f105d217d5118d839.png

Of course. Nice to see you again.

zzzz_Adventure_Stuniverse8.png.40f52b9c19e5e75f0cdc840b76a3b88c.png

You too, Stan. Thanks for the coffee.

zzzz_Adventure_Stuniverse8.png.391947bfe7e7aba8c102484ffef56ae3.png

It was. Have you heard anything from Chelsea?

zzzz_StanleyBaryla1.png.6d1417f3ff5d03972c921c00cf1b7bfb.png

No. Nothing yet, but I will be chasing them up because you're in demand.

zzzz_StanleyBaryla1.png.6d1417f3ff5d03972c921c00cf1b7bfb.png

Yes. You've been invited to interviews with Crystal Palace and West Bromwich Albion. What shall I tell them?

175d_EPL_LfTab.png.cbff404bcd1b92c8785d39db008a286c.png

zzzz_Adventure_Stuniverse8.png.391947bfe7e7aba8c102484ffef56ae3.png

Tell them thanks, but no thanks. I don't want to jeopardise any chance I may have of getting the Chelsea job by attending interviews elsewhere.

zzzz_StanleyBaryla1.png.6d1417f3ff5d03972c921c00cf1b7bfb.png

You realise that the reason we haven't heard from Chelsea yet may because they have no intention of interviewing you. You may not be on their shortlist.

zzzz_Adventure_Stuniverse8.png.391947bfe7e7aba8c102484ffef56ae3.png

Sure. That's clearly a possibility. Have Chelsea interviewed anybody yet?

zzzz_StanleyBaryla1.png.6d1417f3ff5d03972c921c00cf1b7bfb.png

No. Not as far as I know. And they've definitely not offered anybody the job yet. I'd have heard if they had.

zzzz_Adventure_Stuniverse8.png.391947bfe7e7aba8c102484ffef56ae3.png

Let's wait to hear from Chelsea then. One way or the other.

zzzz_StanleyBaryla1.png.6d1417f3ff5d03972c921c00cf1b7bfb.png

You want me to hold out for Chelsea - even though they may not be interested - and turn anything else down that comes in.

 zzzz_Adventure_Stuniverse8.png.391947bfe7e7aba8c102484ffef56ae3.png

Yes, please, Stan. But use your common sense. If Premier League interest is a step-up from Tottenham then let's talk, otherwise let's see what Chelsea come back with. Is there any way you can sound them out a bit more.

zzzz_StanleyBaryla1.png.6d1417f3ff5d03972c921c00cf1b7bfb.png

We could leak your interest in the Chelsea job to the Press...

zzzz_Adventure_Stuniverse8.png.391947bfe7e7aba8c102484ffef56ae3.png

OK. Do that. And be nice to Palace and West Brom but let them down gently.

zzzz_StanleyBaryla1.png.6d1417f3ff5d03972c921c00cf1b7bfb.png

Will do. Talk soon.

Indeed @karanhsingh, I think you are correct. The realisation for me came when I got the message in my Inbox saying that Chelsea fans were laughing off my interest.

That, and I had already looked at my reputation...

Stuniverse: Good thanks, how are you?

zzzz_StanleyBaryla1.png.65ed3efe0c4c5e8a3d07e6d4c61f90c2.png

Not bad. Not bad. You know, Stuniverse, I warned you that Chelsea may not be interested in you as their manager?

zzzz_Adventure_Stuniverse8.png.ce192dab63debab45e5f5569edac671e.png

I remember, Stan. You were very clear on that point.

zzzz_StanleyBaryla1.png.65ed3efe0c4c5e8a3d07e6d4c61f90c2.png

Well, I'm sorry, Stuniverse, but you didn't make the shortlist for interview.

zzzz_Adventure_Stuniverse8.png.ce192dab63debab45e5f5569edac671e.png

I'm not overly surprised really, Stan. It was taking too long. Did they give any reasons?

zzzz_StanleyBaryla1.png.65ed3efe0c4c5e8a3d07e6d4c61f90c2.png

They were complimentary about the style of football you were playing at Tottenham but, basically, they didn't think you had enough experience after only one season in management.

zzzz_Adventure_Stuniverse8.png.ce192dab63debab45e5f5569edac671e.png

Yeah, I can see that. Tottenham were in a FA Cup semi-final against a Championship side when I was sacked.

zzzz_StanleyBaryla1.png.65ed3efe0c4c5e8a3d07e6d4c61f90c2.png

I know, that's Daniel Levy for you. There are a few jobs available right now you could apply for, although I've already declined the interview at Crystal Palace as you asked me to.

184b_Chelsea_no.thumb.png.9e5d58100b7e2c670771f4df52aedf4b.png

Yes, I understand. I guess we wait and see what comes up in the future then.

zzzz_StanleyBaryla1.png.65ed3efe0c4c5e8a3d07e6d4c61f90c2.png

Sure thing. I'll be in touch.

zzzz_Adventure_Stuniverse8.png.ce192dab63debab45e5f5569edac671e.png
