I'm so pleased for the Tottenham supporters today. We haven't given them much to shout about in the Premier League this season but boy did they make some noise today. The atmosphere was electric. They really helped the players, more than they'll ever realise, they almost sucked the ball into the net and they gave the players the lift they needed to hold on for the win.

The players were awesome. Harry Kane scored two outstanding goals and the defence, superbly marshalled by Toby Alderweireld and Hugo Lloris behind him, were magnificent.

Today the players did everything we've been asking them to do. They were clinical in front of goal, they scored the first goal of the game and we saw the difference that makes, and they defended for their lives. I'm so proud of them today but, now, they have to rise to the challenge of performing like that consistently.

It's amazing what a bit of confidence around the place can do. I was very proud of the players today and I hope the Tottenham supporters enjoyed that one because we haven't given them much to sing about in the Premier League this season.

We had to be patient. In the first-half, we were wasteful, we created many good chances but didn't get them on target or failed to get a cross in, only Dele Alli tested the goalkeeper in the first 45.

Shortly after the restart, Moussa Sissoko settled our nerves with a neat finish from a corner and, after that, we were in complete control. It was good to see the goals spread around as well - Erik LamelaGareth Bale and an own goal as a direct result of Matt Doherty's hard, low cross into the six yard box.

We're finally finding some rhythm in the Premier League - long may it continue.

Merry Christmas, Spurs fans.

We're both pleased and disappointed if I'm honest. Disappointed to have gone out because, and I'm not blaming them, Harry Kane and Gareth Bale are usually very reliable penalty takers.

Pleased because of the way we played. Had this been a Premier League match, we'd have gone home with a valuable away point. I'll be honest, it was rear guard action in the first-half and we had our goalkeeper Hugo Lloris to thank for keeping us in it. Then came Fernandinho's red mist, a horror two footed tackle on Matt Doherty just before the break. We're very fortunate Matt wasn't seriously injured. There was hardly any time for us to take advantage of the extra man before the break and Pep Guardiola then had the full interval to prepare his team for the second-half and they were very organised after the restart.

We had a lot more of the game after the break but we just couldn't threaten their goal enough and, when we did have chances, we couldn't get them on target.

So, goalless. The lottery of a penalty shootout. And it didn't go our way.

We can take a lot of pride from this performance. We regroup and go again in the Premier League, the Europa League, and the FA Cup. We still have a lot to play for.

We have two very important games in three days against Aston Villa (10th) and Newcastle United (8th). Its's almost impossible for players to play two full 90 minutes within 72 hours at the highest level. So we'll forget taking one-game-at-a-time and effectively make one selection across the two games. Most players will play in one, but not both, games. There's a few players who we'll check for fitness before finalising the team to face Newcastle.

092h_Villa.png.a0e7eca5478b9092d39442a22389934a.png

This was just one of those games. We played pretty well, had more possession than Villa, created more chances than Villa, but couldn't score.

For them, Ollie Watkins was inspired, Villa only created two chances in the first-half and he scored them both.

I'm beginning to feel like Bill Murray in Groundhog Day. We had more possession than Newcastle United, created far more chances than Newcastle, and even though we got more attempts on target, than normal, Martin Dubravka was inspired in their goal.

At least we managed to score two goals ourselves through Serge Aurier and Dele Alli but we couldn't find the winner despite piling on the pressure towards the end of the game.

Something needs to change soon. We can't keep giving teams two goal leads.

Welcome back Jermain Defoe

090f_Defoe.png.480326ea7c0dc059cd48172a7847dc6a.png

I must admit this one surprised even me. I didn't give Jermain Defoe a moment's thought, not even when he expressed concern at the poor form of Tottenham earlier in the season.

But, as December progressed, I started to think about what we needed and what we might be able to do in the January transfer window. I think we need to strengthen in all areas except, maybe, goalkeeper, and specifically in defence, but we don't have the transfer budget to do that, or even much of it, in this window.

We also need goals. We rely far too heavily on Harry Kane and only have Carlos Vinicius to provide rotation cover. There's also 16 year-old Dane Scarlett, but he's nowhere near ready yet.

We need a short-term solution, someone who can come on for Harry or Carlos late in games when they need a breather or who can go on cold and score us a goal in the last 10-15 minutes when we need one. We also don't want to spend too much money on this short-term solution. I believe Jermain Defoe can be that solution for us. Hopefully.🤞

Also, I could only register 24 of 25 slots for the Europa League because I didn’t have enough home grown in nation players. Defoe should allow me to fill that 25th slot now.

A complete performance from us today, controlled the game from start to finish, and grabbed a well deserved three points.

When we perform like that, I pull my hair out as to why we can’t always achieve those performance levels. We really are a Jekyll and Hyde team and we have to find a way to be much more Dr. Jekyll like we were today and less Mr. Hyde.

Two goals for Harry Kane, including a penalty, his first penalty since his miss against Manchester City in the Carabao Cup penalty shootout. And an excellent finish by Erik Lamela.

It never rains, but it pours...

As if losing Harry Kane to a twisted ankle, on top of existing injuries to Pierre-Emile HojbergDanny Rose and Dane Scarlett, wasn't bad enough, we also had six other players struggling for fitness, including Kane's back-up Carlos Vinicius. Most of them were passed fit enough to play by my medical team but there was a risk in playing them that I wasn't prepared to take.

My medical team have also informed me that Heung-Min Son needs a rest as well... but I need him to play, at least for now.

102e_Everton.png.e66c2e69d73c8661f4cdd78cc4f28ed5.png

I'd unregistered Steven Bergwijn, to create space to register Jermain Defoe, but I had to register Steven again as I needed the bodies and so I unregistered Danny Rose who has a broken foot. We were in the process of lining up a loan move for Steven but that's all on hold for the time being.

102g_Everton.png.d335666ff34aabcfcdbc822bbf513ff8.png

I opted for 4-1-2-3, instead of my usual 4-2-3-1, as I thought that system better suited the players I had available to face Everton.

102i_Everton.png.faec4fb9b64a8c0934fbff408614ea20.png

Another game where I don't think we got what we deserved, particularly with so many players unavailable and a somewhat patched-together team. Everton never threatened us in open play so it was a real kick-in-the-teeth when Lucas Digne struck on the stroke of half-time with a worldie of a free-kick.

We fired the team up during the break and they responded in style with Heung-Min Son equalising a minute after the restart. We continued to take the game to Everton after that, and looked the most likely to score a winner but, story of our season, we just couldn't grab a second goal. We thought Dele Alli was going to win it for us but Jordan Pickford plucked a sensational reflex save out of the bag to keep the scores level.

We left three players out of the match-day squad today. Heung-Min Son was simply rested but Serge Aurier and Moussa Sissoko were left out because we're trying to offload them this transfer window. We're close to a deal for Serge but there's nothing on the horizon for Moussa currently.

I felt I messed young Rodel Richards around in the lead-up to our last game against Everton. I called him up from the U23 squad, allocated him squad number 49, and was all ready to name him on the bench when we decided to cancel the loan we'd lined up for Steven Bergwijn, register Steven instead of Danny Rose (broken foot), and Rodel missed out. So, I've named Rodel on the bench to face Nottingham Forest.

104d_Forest.png.3d8cdc5fb57866bccd9734a3a0ccab54.png

As a Derby County fan I'm delighted to have knocked Nottingham Forest out of the FA Cup.

We were very good value for the win with Erik Lamela outstanding on his return after an ankle injury. First Erik delivered a pinpoint free-kick for Eric Dier to head home at the far post, before scoring a delightful brace himself.

It could've been more as Carlos Vinicius was unfortunate to see his towering header hit the crossbar.

I felt we were very comfortable in the game and gave young Rodel Richards a 20-minute run out.

I'm absolutely thrilled and delighted with our performance today.

We've known since pre-season what we're capable of but this is the first time we've reproduced that level of performance for a full 90 minutes in the Premier League. Well almost a full 90 minutes. After getting off to a flying start with an early Erik Lamela goal, we switched off when Carlos Vinicius (groin) and Pablo Fornals were both off the pitch receiving treatment, we allowed Manuel Lanzini to run half the length of the pitch, without anybody putting a tackle in, and he scored a fine solo goal but, from our perspective, it was totally avoidable.

Fortunately, that was our only blemish. Heung-Min Son hit the post and Jermain Defoe reacted quicker than anybody else in the six yard box to score his first goal since rejoining the club.

We could finally relax on 73 minutes after Erik Lamela put a free-kick into the top corner.

As well as Carlos Vinicius picking up a groin injury, Ben Davies bruised his foot after we'd made all our substitutions.

Harry Winks picked up a sports hernia in training which is a blow for us and a real disappointment for Harry as he was looking forward to this game. It's also come too soon for Harry Kane who is probably a couple of weeks away.

The rest of the squad are excited and we'll be up for the North London derby game. Obviously we go to The Emirates as underdogs but we know how good we can be, we showed that against West Ham last time out, and we're confident of getting a result for our fantastic supporters.

As for me, it'll be my first experience of a North London derby and I can't wait.

I just want to apologise to our supporters. That scoreline wasn't acceptable and we will do better. We were confident ahead of the game and, to be fair, we were more than holding our own until Japhet Tanganga’s rush of red mist that left us in the lurch for the last half an hour or so. Even then, we shouldn't have conceded four goals in the last 24 minutes. Perhaps I should've gone for damage limitation but it's not n my nature to defend when we are losing.

At 1-0 down, with half an hour to go, we were very much in it and I'd planned to bring Jermain Defoe on alongside Carlos Vinicius and go two up top, but following the sending off I had to use my last sub to bring Matt Doherty on as right-back.

Carlos Vinicius scored his first Premier League goal to make it 4-1 but that was no more than a consolation.

I know, I’m sorry, @LATB.

I just can’t seem to catch a break on this save. Right when I think we’re about to turn a corner, Harry Kane goes and gets himself injured.

West Ham United v Tottenham Hotspur (FA Cup 4th Round)

Andreas Voglsammer has settled into the squad very well and the fact he can speak fluent English has helped him in that respect. Andreas has impressed in training and he'll be involved in the match-day squad and may even start.

I've had to unregister Moussa Sissoko in order to register Andreas but that's ok as Moussa, along with Serge Aurier may be leaving the club this transfer window. There's interest in both players and if we can do a deal, we will, although it's not entirely in our own hands as we thought Serge was moving to FC De Metz in Ligue Un but he was unable to agree personal terms with them.

We had some great news this week when our captain Hugo Lloris signed a contract extension to the summer of 2023.

After losing to Manchester City on penalties in the Quarter-Final of the Carabao Cup, we're delighted to have won this penalty shoot-out against West Ham United.

We're disappointed though because we felt we did more than enough over 90 and 120 minutes to have won the game. Lukasz Fabianski had a fine game in their goal. We controlled the game in the first-half and thoroughly deserved the opening goal from Heung-Min Son. We probably should've added a second before the break but it wasn't to be.

We fell asleep after the break, allowing  Jesse Lingard to run unchallenged into our penalty area and score with less than a minute of the second-half gone. We tightened up after that but we lost concentration again when Michail Antonio gave them the lead.

Earlier in the season, we probably go on to lose from that position but the players showed great character to equalise through a debut goal from Andreas Voglsammer and then create three or four good chances to win it. Tanguy Ndombele was particularly unlucky when Lukasz Fabianski made a superb reflex save to turn his rasping shot over the bar.

So. Penalties. And this time we held our nerve, scored our out of five, and that was enough after Hugo Lloris brilliantly saved Andriy Yarmolenko's spot-kick and Said Benrahma fired wide.

Simply put Manchester United were much better than us, I'm afraid. Possession wise there wasn't much in it but they did far more with the ball than we did. We never looked liked breaking them down, never looked like scoring, whereas they kept our goalkeeper Hugo Lloris very busy.

117f_fulham.png.af0156630c4260702e72b40f3d014c29.png

The good news is that Harry Kane returned to training this week and my medical team advise me we can probably get 75 minutes out of him. But, to be honest, much as we've missed him, I'm not going to risk further injury by rushing him back. Despite the temptation, I'm going to leave him out the match-day squad because that way I can't give in to temptation by sending him out onto the pitch.

117g_fulham.png.2f4e18a561ee0e24793a843ceda690c9.png

117h_fulham.png.936230d9c7e24a57f8404f576ac6eaf2.png

Desperate times call for desperate measures. All season we've gone with a 4-1-2-3 or a 4-2-3-1 system but, today, we're going 4-2-4 Wide.

117z_fulham.png.ea2f59062eafe37e84fb392b6826eddb.png

117i_fulham.png.2a9cc4ab12f37d72dd302ff8f60fa1bf.png

117j_fulham.png.21fbeeefc034af70e3b170a6c7b5438e.png

That was more like it. For the most part, we played very well, created plenty of chances, and scored three fine goals through Carlos ViniciusHeung-Min Son and Sergio Reguilon.

If I'm being picky, we didn't get enough efforts on target to test Alphonse Areola in their goal as much as we should have done.

We did let ourselves down at the other end where we conceded two soft goals which made things more tense than they needed to be.

We ended the game with 10-men as we lost Erik Lamela to a knee injury after I’d made all my substitutions so we did well to hold out for the 3-2 win.
