Hot take: Calvert-Lewin is somewhat fortunate he's even in the squad in the first place, his form has been uninspiring for a large chunk of the season, basically since the opening, what, 10 games? Watkins or Bamford ahead of him wouldn't have been a particularly harsh call at all.

I'd have taken Greenwood over him too

DCL is ok if you want to pepper the box late on but not lead the line for a top side, club or country.

Apparently there used to be a code among journalists for no negative press on the day of the game, then obviously afterwards do your worst.

Also if DCL is behind it, has he not just guaranteed he doesn't make the 23 if England go through?

Well it's either come directly from DCL or his agent. Most likely he's got on the blower to his agent and had a moan and the agent has talked to a journo.

Either way, **** move from DCL and a blot on his character.

Think Greenwood is possibly seen as more of a wide forward, but I wouldn't have complained about it.

He's made of glass :D Him and Wilson are good players though who at another time could easily have made the squad.

Ivan Toney you MLG wannabe

He even scores pens

Looking forward to the "Toney for England" calls when he gets about 12 goals in 5 games or something daft :D Think he'll impress in the PL.

With the extra pens we'll get thanks to VAR I expect 30 goals by Xmas :D

I'm not surprised Gareth has gone 343 to match up against the Germans. I posted last week after it was confirmed we had Germany in this round that I expected him to go three at the back.

Hope the plan isn't to just defend with a back 5 and two DMs and resort to playing long balls down the flanks on the counter. Going to be a long game if that's the plan. We're a better team than Germany and whilst I'm not saying we should go all out attack or anything I hope we're not going to play like some minnows who are 'just happy to be there' and playing with an inferiority complex when there's absolutely no need for that. This is a fresh squad that doesn't have the bad personal memories from past games against Germany. We've got the players to control the game and play on the front foot.

Hopefully we play our game and not let the occasion get the better of the team like it did against Scotland.

That’s positive? How negative were you expecting?

I suppose Saka for Foden, which for me doesn't change anything. Both players have their merits it's what's behind them that makes the team defensive.

I’m not sure Saka or Foden is more negative/attacking than the other.

Walker to wingback and Trippier out for Mings seems like the only way to make it slightly more negative.

So, just over an hour to go. My pre-match thoughts...

I think this will be close - certainly much closer than our last major meeting with Germany 11 years ago. We've certainly got the edge on form and defensive solidity, and we'll have a partisan home crowd. But Germany have looked more convincing going forward and have more big-game players who can handle the pressure.

For sure, if we can pull off the win, we've got a real chance of going all the way... but I've learned over the years to watch England more out of hope than expectation. I'd be fine with an early exit, as long as we don't completely disgrace ourselves like we did in 2016, 2014, 2010... :D

My prediction: Germany to win 2-1.

Wrong team anyway :D

We'll see I guess.

I like Saka, but who's creating anything in this team. Is it long balls over the top time?

As I posted above, looks like we're set up to defend with a back five, two sitters in front and pump it long down the channels for the pace wide men.

I mean, as long as we win... but we're better than that if that's the gameplan.
