Absolutely not. He made this game competitive, and with a different ref, probably costs them the game. England won despite Gareth.

Germany's best chance came from Sterling losing his mind and England missed several good chances themselves. England tactically were excellent and both their goals came from exploiting Germany's wing back system.

England have beaten Germany for the first time in a knockout round of a major tournament since 1966.

Anyone know about that one

I would ask my parents, but they were 9 months and 21 months old at the time.

Now watch us get knocked out by Ukraine in the quarters, you’d think we’d just won the final the way they’re celebrating. Long way to go yet

To be fair they deserve to celebrate like this after every win considering all the nonsense they get inbetween games

I think we can just enjoy beating the Germans who usually embarrass us at tournaments for the past 60+ years without worrying right this second where and when we might go out.

England could have played any system. They're better than Germany. They have better players. That made the difference. Sterling is better than most of Germany's forwards. So is Kane. Ditto most of the other players on that pitch except Rice and Phillips

Think anyone being overly critical of Southgate for this is being exceptionally harsh. Again, not perfect, and not thrilling, but the game plan was clear and it absolutely worked. Rode our luck with the Muller miss in particular but I thought we absolutely deserved the win.

Not bitter personally. England deserved to win today if you ask me. Just not convinced one bit that the tactical set up was right by Southgate despite the result.

You can’t have thought the referee favoured us though?

Think the subs bench showed England has more quality.

Argument being quite a few of that subs bench should have been starting

Haha. God forbid you might give him some credit for the best game management in a generation.

Red would have been harsh for either, although I think Phillips was very, very close. But for the rest Makkelie was without error.

Some of his more questioned decisions worked out too. Walker actually did a good job of covering holes in our defence that might well have still been there with a back four, Grealish came on at the right time, the midfield wasn't exactly creative but apart from the first 15 it was generally on top. Even keeping Kane on worked out OK

If Phillips doesn't get the ball, it's a red card. But he did and was a bit unfortunate to go over the top of it. Yellow was right because of how he went in with the studs.

It's just one of those isn't it. If you mistime it you run the risk of taking the red. Time it correctly the ref doesn't bat an eyelid

Thank god for that, I thought you might have died with happiness there.

You might be winning me over, slowly

Really mature win, the difference in how the players approached the game v Iceland and the game today was so stark - some early nerves in the first ten minutes but you could see the confidence gradually building in the team rather than it being slowly drained away.

There may have been caution but there was no fear.

How are they sleeping on Shaw? Not having this

It weird isn't it? He was arguably Englands best player, solid defensively and a threat going forward, always looked in control and had a huge part in both goals and he's hardly been mentioned.

Balance was better today. Kane still appears to have no movement. Saka vanished in the second half. Could’ve had more subs, a pacier striker would’ve created more and caused Germany more problems.

Keeper and back 3 were outstanding. Maguire particularly coming forward when the opportunity presented itself. Still think we haven’t clicked up front yet.

You should enjoy your win, get on the beers and off the forum :D

This. I get that everyone is high on the win against the eternal bogeyman, but bigging up this win due to a superior team, tactics or whatever else, well, it is a bit much. Could easily have fallen the other way,

Scoreboard fandom ^^

It's like they have their talking points so won't address anything that doesn't fit
