I have no idea what Deschamps was thinking taking Griezmann off when he did.

It was obvious that if Switzerland managed to equalise, then France would lack any creative threat going forward and the game would ultimately go to penalties.

Then you have one of your best penalty takers on the bench...

Very bad move.

I know it was a long night but lets not forget his decision at the start to go 3412. Made no sense

Yeah I know "injuries" but I think you stick with the system the team have trained in.

Rather have a makeshift left-back than a makeshift formation.

In general France never got going offensively this tournament other than 25 minutes this game. I'm still not sure Benzema over Giroud was the right move given Mbappe/Griezmann/Benzema seem to get in each others way, but of all those 3 players in an ET situation I'd want Griezmann on for his playmaking ability. Again, just bizarre to take him off.

Massive shame Xhaka will not be able to play the quarter final. He’s a consistent player that has that ability to produce a masterclass like this now and again, I think most Arsenal fans have come to recognise that but many will forever dislike him based on those inevitable head rushes that happen a few times a year. Didn’t like the idea of getting less than £20m for him in the first place, especially not after today.

Interesting how the French had somewhat of a penalty specialist in Maignan compared with Lloris, I’m sure they trusted their captain after Rodriguez but given the chance again, I wonder if Deschamps would have opted for a sub. Lloris looked weak in that shootout, like a rewatch of de Gea vs. Villarreal.

I'm guessing they thought he'd saved a penalty earlier in the game so he can't be that bad.

Won't be able to watch this one.

I did miss extra-time in that Italy-Austria game which has hopefully fulfilled my missed entertainment quota so maybe this one will be the opposite of that. :D

Not the greatest decision apparently. :D

I dont know what all the Mbappe hype is about. All he can do is run fast. Every time I see him shoot he misses the goal (and often by a mile) even if he is in a promising situation alone on goal etc. (The Champions League final against Bayern comes to mind where he received the ball 12 m in front of clear goal and all he was able to do was to roll the ball back to Neuer). And despite being fast as lightning, even grandpa Hummels was able to tackle him and get the ball back.

That's the most mesmerizing and thrilling Euro game I've ever seen. It had everything. Pogba's fantastic goal, Xhaka's genious pass to Gavranovic for 3-3, an underdog coming back from two behind with some 10 mins left, the biggest(?) star missing the fifth penalty.

Also, I know hindsight is 20/20 but what are they thinking having Mbappe take the fifth penalty? Whoever decided that (himself most likely?) made a bad decision. He's not had a good tournament, he's still young and in this situation simply has everything to lose. You can't say you EXPECTED him to miss, but it wasn't shocking when he did either.

Fantastic day of football, and to think the main event of watching my beloved Sweden play is yet to come. Now I'm just scared that both Eng and Swe will make it through, cause we will lose another quarter final to them I'm sure but I'm not so sure I can take the banter from my English friends for another few years, the WC quarter final was enough :(

That’s utter nonsense isn’t it. Look at his career so far. A couple of bad matches don’t erase the fact he’s had one of the best careers any 22-year old has ever had at that age.

Was nice to see pics of Jordan Larsson on the Hampden turf, many years after his dad scored in the Scottish Cup final in his last season for Celtic. He probably won't get on the field tonight, but it would be quite the story if he came on and scored the winner. With Mikael Lustig also back in Glasgow, Sweden can count on the support of the green half of Glasgow!

My point was he is not a good finisher despite getting hyped for exactly that. He is fast and can do nice assists, yes. But when it come to finishing he is not up there with the best like Lewa or Haaland or even Griezmann...

He makes up for it by creating space for shots like virtually no other footballer and making his chances easier.

Oh no, I missed that part. :( How are Switzerland supposed to have any chance against Spain without him? He was sensational.

He could have been sent off, he pulled someone's shirt back when he was already on the yellow and the ref decided to ignore it.

Didn't see him finish for the offside goal against Germany?

He had a great game that match, terrible for the rest of the tournament, but France basically was as well

Yeah that's what they've been saying. With the covid situation and Swe fans not being allowed into Scotland we need all the support we can get. But yeah no Jordan tonight. Hopefully no Lustig either as he's struggling imo but our coach isn't famous for making a lot of changes so I'm sure he'll play.

This is a terrible hot take that doesn't stand up to scrutiny. His conversion rate for all shots is better than 1 in 4. That's world class level finishing

Ok. You are right. I am wrong. Sorry.

I did call Mbappe to miss his penalty before the shoot out started but it just wasn't his tournament at all.  He did get a few assists and look unplayable at points but he gets that goal V Germany and who knows what would have happened

was playing like he had a lack of confidence in his shooting from game 2 onwards

Doesn't help when you have Deschamps going full CL Pep by suddenly changing formation and bringing in Lenglet. Which literally backfires straightaway.

Was also so irritated by how Rabiot started so many games. And of course as mentioned so many times, the whole 2nd gear thing. Just strange.

Why does everyone keep saying they were playing in second gear, after 4 games have people ever thought that what we have seen was France's level?

Defensive gameplay, attacking in spurts.

Just always looked like they only upped a level when they could be bothered to.

A lot of peeps seem to have concluded it's a Deschamps thing

It might be a Deschamps thing, they looked exactly the same in the World Cup except for Argentina game where Argentina were set up perfectly for them to counter attack against.

But if it is a Deschamps thing, why would it suddenly change during the middle of a tournament?

That's just my opinion from only watching them this tournament, so it seemed a total waste of their squad

Much akin to Southgate's England tbh

That's fair enough, it certainly should be possible to get that group of players playing better football, I just don't think it's possible with the current setup.
