African Cup of Nations Final - Ivory Cost vs Algeria

Do not turn off your TV set's, Ivory Coast have won the African Cup of Nations after a 3-1 win over Algeria. We hit them hard in the first 20 minutes of the game and would end up 2-0 up with Ake Loba scoring his 9th goal of the tournament. They would pull 1 back and the game could have changed for the better for Algeria when they were awarded a penalty. The keeper was well beat but Delort hit the post and no-one could follow up to score. The last 30 minutes was a nervous affair until Roger Assalé secured the game in the 94th minute and Alex Laradze could celebrate the victory. The relatively unknown English manager had guided Les Elephants to their 3rd African Cup of Nations and cemented his name amongst the best for the Ivory Coast.

I had planned to do much more than score updates but with a new club team also, this competition was at the wrong time but what a performance!! 22 goals in 7 games, unbeaten in all 7 games and to win on home soil is special. This may be the highlight of my International Career and I'm not sure I have much more to achieve with the Ivory Coast.

Mura Season Preview - Part 1

With the Wonders that was the African Cup of Nations, the "day" job was much harder and some killer flights to jump from Abidjan to Celje to try and get back for the games. But now, we need to see what this Mura 05 squad and season looks like and I have to say, after the poor showing from the games at the end of the season, the club is run very, very well.

ND Mura 05 was founded in in 2005 but dissolved in 2013 due to financial difficulties. They would carry on playing under their newly registered youth section (this sound familiar to FC Urartu) and would start back as NS Mura 05 in the Slovenian 4th division. They gained 3 promotions in 5 seasons to once again return to the Slovenian PrvaLiga. They play their home games at Fazanerija City Stadium which has a seated capacity of 3,782, but in the game they are paying rent to Celje to use their 12,950 all seater stadium, Arena Z’dežele. 

The club are based in Murska Sobata in North-Eastern Slovenia, close to the borders with Austria, Hungary and Croatia. The town only only a population of around 11,500 people and was once Yugoslavia's most Northern town. NS Mura 05 share a fierce local rivalry with NK Maribor and NK Nafta Lendava, who we played to secure our top flight status last season. 

2023/24 NS Mura 05 Transfers

We lost our best player from last season when he refused to sign a new deal and 4 other players went out the same way. Sometimes, that is the way things go. Securing the future was the main aim and to scout local countries for young players who have the potential to develop into future stars until we can start producing our own. With a healthy bank balance and a good sized kitty for purchases, I went out with the aim to spend some money but also try and bring players who find themselves without a club into the fold. The result, was a mixture of players and one large spend on a player the scouts raved about and was a signing at all costs.

I went back for some of my top players at FC Urartu but they all wanted £2,000+ a week in wages so were politely told they have no part to play in my future plans. I was let down by that, I would have paid them all more then they were on to move, but it was not to be at this stage.

17 year old Slovenian Domen Zdovc is a player I have pinned a huge amount of hope on after a glowing scout report. Able to play both positions down the right, he has been brought in to play in the full back role but with wing back duties. His training will be set to wing back and we will slowly introduce him to first team football. Not a pro-typical wing back size at 198cm, we also hope he may provide some aerial threat in both boxes. Hugely impressive natural fitness, marking and positioning, he is already not far off the first team and had that 5 star PA that the team is lacking. I normally would not spend £1,000,000 plus incentives on a player but the wing back roles are becoming much more important and he could have a whole career here at Mura. 

Giordano Rossi was highlighted by his agent as available so as we did with hundreds of players, came in on loan. The only Italian on the team, but this may change in the future he wanted a wage that was modest and also has a 5 star PA. We tend to play with a Mezzala in the centre of midfield where he has all the right attributes, especially his first touch, passing, vision and a good work rate. There was late interest from Lecce in Italy, but we managed to secure a long term deal on what may be the signing of the year on a free if he performs and continues to improve at a good level. Rossi has the chance to be a long term player with us.

We raided, I mean full on Viking raided Czech clubs for the rest of our new signings. Slavia Prague had several youngster running out of contract so we camped a scout out in that part of the world and the reports on them all was 5 star PA. Now, that may not mean a huge amount with the current squad but for the small money to be paid in compensation (£40,000 to £50,000 per player), it really was a no brainer. I am confident we shall be able to sell them on for more in the future even if they do not work out as long term first team players.

Martin Musil probably starts for us as he is currently rated around the same as starting full back, Klemen Šturm who at 29 will not improve. A starter for £50,000 compensation is a steal of a deal and we will continue to monitor Slavia Prague each season for deals. Work rate, tackling, marking and teamwork, Martin has it all and I really feel he can make an impact from day one, despite only being 17. As he joins a few fellow Slavia Prague youth prospects we do not see any issues with them struggling to fit in and more could be on the way. Another 5 star PA with a balancedp personality that we hope will improve but for now, welcome to our starting left back for the future.

Next up for £40,000 from Slavia Prague was goalkeeper Radim Holik. Already the number 2 keeper in the team he may be a little shorter than the pro-typical keeper but we hope that will not be a problem. He has high level goalkeeping attributes which we require for any incoming keeper but does struggle with communication and his first touch is poor, so we will stick to the basics for him and not ask him to do more than the minimum when receiving the ball. Current #1 keeper Matko Obradović is 32 so in his prime, this gives Holik some time to develop over the next few seasons and should be a regular starter by the time he is in his early 20's.

Finally the 3rd compensation cost player from Slavia Prague was Daniel Straceny who may have the toughest task to break into the team but has time on his side at only 17. We will develop him to become a AMC shadow striker as he has good technique, passing and finishing skills which will be useful in the role. At only £250 per week wages this really was a no-brainer to bring him in and see how he develops as he has all the right starting tools and his personality will help him develop. We will see how he does over the next few years before moving to the first team.

We would also pay a little more for one play in Eduard Sevinsky but at £300,000 with a finishing grade of 15, we took a gamble. His personality is not what we had hoped for but with the right guidance we should be able to improve that. At only 16 years old he is one for the future and will spend some time in the under 19's to improve. We have two options with him, continue him as a pressing forward or develop him into an attacking midfielder in the shadow striker role which we feel he has most of the attributes to be successful in. He does lack some more physical attributes like pace, stamina and strength so we hope these can improve over the next few seasons.

Finally on the permanent signings was another Czech player, this time from Sparta Prague in Dominik Plechaty. The 24 year old central defender is different to the young guns signed as he is not far off his PA already, but he is good enough to walk straight into the team. Has good all around skills needed for the position and we may be able to improve some stats slightly. He will probably be good enough for a starting role for a few seasons and will then be in his prime to hopefully sell on for a profit due to only costing £52,000.

I will be looking to cover the League and the Squad as a whole in the Pre-Season Update Part 2. I think the time to go into more detail maybe with Mura as I am getting a good vibe from here already and it may be time to slow down and enjoy now I have my feet on the management ladder, oh an African Cup of National win under my belt!

Mura Season Preview Part 2

PrvaLiga Telekom Slovenije - With just 10 teams in the top flight, each team plays the other 4 times for a total of 36 games. The only restriction on players are there can only be a maximum on 3 Non-EU players in the matchday squad. Top 3 teams qualify for Euro along with the Cup Winners. If the cup winners are in the top 3, the 4th team will also qualify for Europe. We have had 3 winners in the past 5 years with 5 teams finishing in the top 3, showing that the League is wide open and any team has a chance to win. However, Maribor now have 16 title and are the team to beat year in year out.

Last years Champions NK Maribor are surprisingly not the favourites to win the league, with NK Aluminij Kidričevo. They have never won a League Title to date, but the team from Kidričevo, just 26km from Maribor, are the ones to beat. NK Maribor are second favourites with Olimpija Ljubljana rounding out the top 3. Newly promoted NK Fužinar Ravne look like they are favourites to go straight back down, which often happens and our own NS Mura are way off the top 5, priced at 50-1 to win the title in 6th. On the right is last years table for comparison. 

  

Mura Squad - Season 2023/24

We have battles at most positions which is great, but picking a starting line up at the minute will be hard until several games have been played. The Czech players will all hope to come straight into the team and all have the ability to push for a starting role from day one, including keeper Radim Holik who may get the nod to help aid his development. Nino Kouter may find himself playing in the DM role and may be needed to help slow down the number of goals allowed from last season when the 4-2-3-1 that was played before I arrived just did not do the job.

Million Pound signing Domen Zdovc is not quite at the level of the other players at his position but may be forced to play sooner than later to help justify his price tag. Him and Martin Musil on the opposite side of the defence looks set to be a feature for many years to come. Giordano Rossi and Alen Kozar look set to start in the middle of the park but we look a little thin there still if the matches pile up or injuries happen. 

Finally, we look a think thin up top and we still did not get that striker we need. We put a few large £1,000,000 plus offers in for players but non worked out. Tio Cipot can play either wing and is unknown who he will line up against. There was another player here, a starting AM(L) Luka Bobicanec. However, we had an offer come in for £550,000 and at 30 years old, we decided to take the money and look for a replacement that can come in and have potential to grow. His contract was up at the end of the season so this seemed a great deal for the club.

As for the Striker problem.....Do any of your wingers have pace and  finishing 12+ in both? That would be a place to start.

Sometimes the answer is already there....

I actually often find that the Strikers or Wingers are often better than their attributes say when I take over teams.....

With 7 games played we are a team that either performs or just cannot hit the back of the net to save our lives. We get a stunning victory against rivals NK Mairbor then lose 3 games in a row, scoring just 1 goal in that period. 3 wins, 4 defeats and not much in the middle but no-one is out playing us so we are not far from challenging. We cannot put the man in the AMC role I like as it just leaves us open at the back, so a DM player, playing in the half-back role will be used to try and stop the goals against us moving forward. 

It might be the biggest mistake of the season to have sold Luka Bobicanec as he had scored 4 goals at the point, but we must have someone else who wants to be "that" man for us? We beat the newly promoted team and kept a clean sheet which was much needed after 3 losses in a row. We sit in 8th place, a long way ahead of the bottom 2 currently but with in touch of Celje in 4th place.

So lets look into the stats a little more. We are great at getting chances and taking shots, but are they the right shots? Or are we just lacking that finisher up front to take the chances? We are also letting almost 0.5 goals in per game more than we are expected to be doing so we need to be more disciplined in defence to stop this. I hope adding a DM on defend duty may help solve this issue. At this point players are still only 7 games in so 1 more month and I will start to look deeper into the stats and see who is getting the shots and what is going on with them.

May have to take a visit, just to see if anyone worth taking! I think I just got lucky with players either not offered a contract or the team got lazy, but with small compensation deals, I am happy!

I have a few that are around that mark but I want to see what the scouts can find me. Lot's of players want wages that are just too much and I refuse to break the bank for now.

That was an impressive month where we would win 3 games in the league and cup. What was more promising was the lack of goals conceded until we met one of the favourites for the title, Aluminij Kidricevo, who would give us our only loss of the month. The 2-0 win over rivals Olimpija Ljubljana on the road was the highlight of the month which saw the first of 3 goals for on loan striker Stephan Dvorak. He may be starting to show the promise of a 20+ a season striker which we require.

We would beat Primorje Ajdovscina in the Pokal Slovenije First Round to set up a match with rivals NK Nafta Lendava. We will be the home team and it is sure to draw a large crowd. With the season aim to reach the quarter final, we need to make sure we come out on top against them again. 

A huge rise in the table to 4th with the impressive month. Maribor and Aluminij Kidricevo look set to do battle for the League Title as they had already pulled away from the rest of the league by 6 points. Down the bottom Tabor Sezana have not won and need to find some form soon or will be getting left behind. 

We would lose one of our young bright sparks, Martin Musil, to a horrendous broken leg, suffered when been tackled in the Aluminij Kidričevo game. The match had to be stopped as he was stretched off and signs were not good from the look on the 17 year olds face. We may not see him again this year but we have spent him to a specialist for the best possible care. 

We did however, after some fierce talks with the board, get an upgrade to our Academy Coaching from average to adequate. This is still well below where we need it to be, but so early in the season it is good to get this moving. I feel it will be hard to get much more and match the bigger teams in the league until we have Euro money.

I think it came a little too soon really but they are a solid team and everyone else just seemed to crumble when playing them. Always hard in Africa without the Leagues there producing new players and relying on Euro clubs. And besides, I really couldn't turn down Les Elephants. The team in the final was pretty much the same one for all the games with minor changes, it was working well so just resting players. 

It feels a little cheating to raid the Czech clubs but if they keep letting contracts run down, I'm sure it must happen in real life  Mura looks a great challenge to build them up and I like Slovenia so far plus its a league I haven't seen many people play, which is always good to have different leagues in stories going.

The monthly updates (For League fxtures) would be a little too often for my liking, so I went with a few months. I tried to get rid of my Director of Football, he was not impressed. It looks like I am stuck with him! He is ok but would have liked better negioting as players want silly money to come here. Something about the standard of living? It's lovely here.

Editors note - Only just found out you can easily edit the side of pictures, d'oh!!!! What an idiot! I'll go back and sort some of the large ones out from before. Again, D'oh!!

 

As we upgraded our Youth Academy Coaching we now sit with facilities as below. The new figure on the left only shows a small increase in Junior Coaching for now, we need to try and get that to a similar level to Youth Recruitment this season.

Youth Coaching is high up on my list and I have added a couple of staff members so far, actually some of them came from Urartu FC as they applied for the jobs I posted. Looks like we are on the right track with our coaching teams as we sit at the top of both the first team and youth teams. This is might impressive of mostly the work that was done before I got here. I have some coaches I want to replace, but I don't feel the need to kick them out and pay them off at the minute looking at this. I will however look into the goalkeeper coach immediately to try and improve on that, especially with a promising 17 year old in goal. 

 

Head of Youth Development - Tadej Cipot

I have very few issues with him for the level we are. I am not sure we will get much better with the wage structure we have in place. There was one Argentinian that ticked the boxes but has a balanced personality so not sure that would be the right move for now. I will give Cipot at least this season to see what he comes up with as we improve our youth structure.

He will have his work cut out as we are way down on the player development stakes with the big boys, as you would expect at the top. We are still several seasons away from realistically been able to produce top level talent to stop us having to be a "buying" club or heading to Czech or Croatia to try and nap cheap youngster who we think can develop. 

We also secured the 2nd part of our Italian Connection, another central midfielder who was offered to us by his agent as he was without a club, Matteo Rossetti. He could slot straight in next to Giordano Rossi and look to form a partnership there. A product of the Torino Youth Academy, he played the last two seasons 70 games for Pordenone in Serie B with an average rating of 7.05 across the two seasons. As this League is the 27th best in Europe, it is 11 places higher than the Slovenia Top League so he should be able to fit in and play. His lack of goals to me means he probably will be better creating opportunities than finishing them off.

And finally, we were a little unlucky to not draw a Division 2 team in the Pokal Slovenije, however we avoided the big teams and really have a great shot of meeting Maribor or Aluminij Kidricevo in the semi-final or final. Now a dream semi-final against Radomjle or Bravo would really be wonderful, but you know we get a big team next round if we win.

I am going to be getting my 5th and 6th Czech players this summer  But I like to think it actually makes sense for a Hungarian club. 

What makes less sense is that we keep raiding our supposed "parent" club for their best youth rather than the other way around...

On Les Elephants - IIRC some of my key players were Kessie, Singo, Hamed Traore and Fofana. Also Kouame up front. Loba didn't make my squad! 

Sadly after winning the AFCON we did not manage to cause any surprises in the World Cup.

After thinking long and hard about my international career and if to "leave when on top" with Les Elephants, I decided to make sure they qualified for the World Cup before deciding my fate so they say. Have we got enough youngsters coming through? Can I persuade anyone to join the cause who are not playing for another Nation? Those are the questions I need answers to over the next few seasons. The World Cup is a long time away, and the squad is not getting much younger.

As expected we cruised through the 2nd round of CAF World Cup Qualification with a 7-1 agg. victory over Chad. This was really nothing more than a training game in the end and gave a chance to rotate the team a little in the second leg. They still got the business done and more. We have been given what would be called a group that we cannot fail to qualify from with only Gabon ranked inside the Worlds top 100.  With around a year to go until that happens we will first have the African Cup of Nations Qualifying in early 2024, again a group we must top.

 

Slovenia crash out of Euro 2024 Qualification after 3-1 loss to Norway

In what would be a bitter blow in the final fixtures, Scotland would beat Russia 1-0 to secure their qualification. Norway would go 3-0 up inside 20 minutes against Slovenia and that would all but seal the game, which ended 3-1. Outsiders from the off, many would have hoped to beat Scotland into second place but it was not meant to be. 

In other Qualification news, Poland were the "unlucky losers" as the only 2nd placed team to not qualify on 11 points, with Denmark and Wales finishing just above them on 12 and 13 points. Slovakia would finish behind Poland in a group that England would drop only 2 points. Czech Republic would finish ahead of Italy in there group in a large shock. In one of the worse performances, Austria would finish 4th behind Belgium, Ireland and Bulgaria with only Luxembourg behind them.

Bosnia and Herzegovina would finish 3rd behind Finland in their group with Armenia in 4th place. As expected when offered the Hungary job, their group was too tough to come out from as they finished 4th behind Sweden and Ukraine with the might Spainish side also crashing out in 3rd place.

What a Derby game against NK Maribor to wrap up a hugely successful last few months where were have set records for clean sheets and moved up the table. The long break (next game not until the 14t February) will be great for the players and gives me time to scout for players who's contract will soon end for next season. Will the players come back refreshed and ready to challenge for European places, or will it slow the momentum and send us backwards?

We set a new defensive record with 6 League Games in a row without conceding. We did only score 9 in those 6 games, and 4 of them from the penalty spot so we are hardly setting the world on fire.... but we are winning games by any means necessary and not letting goals in the other end. We came from behind against NK Maribor to win which was even more pleasing to see as that was the first time in a long time we had let a goal in and had to score to get something from the game. We were fortunate against Aluminij Kidricevo to be awarded a penalty from a push during a corner, the ref went to VAR which confirmed it was the right decision.

We now sit only 1 point behind rivals NK Maribor in the League and are performing above all expectations. I am not sure if the team can sustain this for all the season but we have really made ourselves hard to beat both home and away. I was aiming for a top 4 finish to try and secure Europe and that still is the aim, however one can never avoid excitement with a title challenge.

We have already seen 3 managers lose their jobs this season, which seems to be the norm in this League with 7 from 6 clubs last year. Expectations are high and Managers are not given the time to change things around, even when only 1 team automatically goes down. Czech Manager Jiri Jarosik left for FC Baník Ostrava in the Czech Fortuna Liga.

On the stats front we are quiet and leaky, letting in too many goals for the 7 shots faced per game. However, we did keep 6 clean sheets in a row so we are best in the league at stopping shots. Stats, its all on how you look at them! On the other side we are 2nd in the league in shots taken but only 7th in conversion rate, which as expected, we still struggle to score goals. I have my eye on a Slovenian striker who was not interested in us at the start of the year but if we get to Europe, might make the move next season to aid this.

  

New Signing - Free Agent - Philippe Sandler - 26 (USA, South Africa, Holland)

This is one I didn't need but his backstory and history, or lack of, interested me. After starting at Ajax then going through the PEC Zwolle academies, he joined Manchester City for £2,300,000 and played 1 game for them. He had loan spells in Belgium and France and only had 9 appearances during those 3 years. After all the promise he now finds himself at NS Mura in Slovenia trying to make something of his career. On the scout report he is probably a starting level DC / DM and I just want to see if we can make anything of a once highly rated prospect, or will he fall out of football once and for all? Right now, I don't know how it will go. He is also said to be able to improve, but at 26, can he? 

New Signing - Free Agent - Srđan Spiridonović - 30 (Austria, Serbia)

This was to add a tiny bit more class to the team and he fits the model nicely, able to play either wing and up front if required. His arrival may hinder some young players getting game time, however with a title challenge possibly on the cards, he should be able to come in and be a top player for us. The 3 year deal and wages were not ideal, however if he plays well the plan would be to use for this season and see what his stock is next year.

We cannot just rely on the generosity of our Czech Republic teams lettings us have their players for little money. We needed to start building the team with Slovenians for the future as I have two aims. Short term, buy the best local prospects we can find and in the long term, be the ones developing these Slovenian prospects. With that seems a good transfer kitty (Well, until I looked into the other teams), I decided to splash some more of it on 3 Slovenian players. There are a few more I am keen on but want to make sure we have European Football secured first. Total spend up to £2,700,000 with £775,000 coming back in after a few more players left in January.

New Signing - £650,000 - Damjan Vidovič - 16 (Slovenia)

From Vevce, Ljubljana the young 16 year old had found himself in Italy and was just 108 days from gaining Italian citizenship. He was on the books of AC Monza after moving through their Youth Academy. A bright player speaking 6 languages, he already has 4 under 21 caps which is what promoted me to buy him as there are only 2 in the under 21's at that age. He looks like he may fit into our system as a half back which is where will will train him to start with. Failing that he could move into that central midfield role but he has the skills to play any of the midfield 3 currently. We hope with a 5 star PA he can become one of the leading players.

New Signing - £275,000 - Bernard Lazard - 17 (Slovenia)

Bernard was on loan in League Two and whilst not setting the world alight, was a regular starter. He is someway off the first team but he has 7 Slovenian Under 21 caps and brings us the ability to play him on either side, but the preference is on the left. With Martin Musil going down earlier in the season with a broken leg, having a longer term back up plan was wise and this deal felt too good to turn down. He will spend at least a year in the youth team to develop his game and then we can see if he can live up to his 5 star PA.

New Signing - £240,000 -Rok Maher - 22 (Slovenia)

There was some unhappy fans from both sides when Rok Maher left NK Maribor for rivals NS Mura. It may seem a strange one to bring in another player in an already packed midfield but he has all the quality and ability to be a long term player for the team. We are excited to bring him into the team and see if he can continue to improve.

 

In other news, I have been looking deeper into the Slovenian League Structure and doing some research, I have definitely found a team I would love to start with for a possibly one team save. Probably will be FM22 now until it can happen now. I think I'll be making my own notes and edits mind you (Names, stadiums etc), there are some things that have changed.

All the power to you. I am leery of making any edits. I only use Skins and Logo packs. That is why I play in the Slovakian First Division!

I also haven't bought the in game editor since FM15....

This is the pre game editor. Lots of stadiums need changing and many team names have changed which was my aim to get them all correct. Stadium names changes and size changes all ok but the actual Team names are not changing which is extremely annoying. Will have another look tonight and see if I can find out what I’m doing wrong.

As football always does, we get Maribor in the Cup semi final, I guess if we want to win this competition then we had to face and beat them at some point. That adds extra pressure and tiredness to both squads with games shortly afterwards and will test the depth and resolve of each teams squad.
