Congrats on the title!  Looks like a lot of well rounded players, which makes them nicely flexible.

League & Club Improvements

Slow and steady...

coefficient.jpg.4b281f10420ab1c9c5a155f5ffae095a.jpg

This is much more encouraging, we need to keep moving on up!

1775905973_clubplace.jpg.9bc87662da811b8d1391b33886ae6734.jpg

A whopping 42 places for the club, but we are still down in, well, 444th place.

307311029_tvmoney1.jpg.196a1835bb49cb374db155fdc0ed1ae0.jpg

The improved reputations are reflected in increasing TV money.

Finally, really happy with the state of the facilities right now.

In around 15 months, we have managed to get two training upgrades, one youth upgrade and several improvements to junior coaching and youth recruitment.

I hope all of this starts to pay off soon!

Summer of 2022

Not as busy a summer as last year.

1077618283_transfer.thumb.jpg.d7eda8717d37b0b2f59f8e84db52e4d0.jpg

Three main signings to highlight.

jovic.thumb.jpg.24efaf2687ae0dafaf3a6a6b2c7ed26e.jpg

Jovis is our second free transfer from Partizan in as many seasons, I hope he can replicate the form of his predecessor. He will be an option for us to play the DW role on either flank.

bolla.thumb.jpg.d8e281e8cdca3748a49e0aa59cc9c5d4.jpg

Bolla joins on loan from Fehervar for a season, I wanted to buy him but they demanded upwards of a million. He should slot easily into the DW role on the right flank as first choice.

matousek.thumb.jpg.45da844ea403cb056efb362ee69d36dd.jpg

The big summer signing who as you can see has made an immense start to life in Budapest! Jan joined from parent club Slavia on his contract expiry, I am not sure why we had to pay 55k for his services but I am not complaining. He is made for the SS role - interestingly he is also natural there and awkward in all other positions.

Finally, there is one confirmed transfer for next summer I am very excited about!

koronics.thumb.jpg.c809e25702beae9e99015b40ba31298c.jpg

Milan Koronics is a Hungarian/ Serbian player generated at Cukaricki in Serbia. Found in the Hungarian U21 side. He is costing us 225k up front but I hope will be worth it! I plan to eventually develop him into a right sided winger (although he cannot play there right now), as he seems to have the right attributes for it.

Bolla was a great player for me in my Debreceni save. I had him as WB-D, but he had PPM  get Forward.....so he timed his overlapping runs better.

Thanks! Definitely excited about him. A Hungarian new-gen popping up in a foreign country - lot to like about that!

He is definitely performing well so far, I think I will try to make the move permanent.

When injuries take their toll

Kutsia was our biggest transfer from the first season and I was really excited about his development at the club. Unfortunately, he was been very injury prone since joining - no major injuries but a succession of niggling ones that keep him out for weeks or a month at a stretch. He then returns to play a few games, then gets injured again.

As a result, his attributes have taken a bit of a beating. The plan was to develop the physical side of his game - instead his stamina has gone from 10 to 7 (!) and that is just one of the problems.

1946296760_kutsiafckd.thumb.jpg.8285768291b925db5b0137f2a7c7be2a.jpg

1138739108_kutsiainj.thumb.jpg.c4c24f1ff60cdaf6bdaf1a936511d1a5.jpg

Literally as I say this, he got injured once more. The day after he returned. I think I may have to soon give up on him.

Ujpest Academy Watch

So as we have seen, Janos Dienes really is the shining light of the Ujpest academy. POTY for the division at the age of 16, also a full Hungarian international - he continues to make excellent progress. This is him now.

656248084_janosnow.thumb.jpg.f9a2921c1b87ebbab28dc9cef2969192.jpg

With our 2022 intake, could we have found ourselves the next Janos? I realize it's a bit silly considering Janos Sr. is all of 17 years old, but I am a bit excited by the lad below. To make the comparison even better - his name is also Janos and he is also a center half. Go figure!

2793263_janosk.thumb.jpg.1cca283ffcb1a86c1bcf164f81aa05a7.jpg

He has been coming along well, and I think he could be quite good for us in the future!

Continuing the Janos tradition, we also got a nice young keeper named, well, Janos. What is it about the name?! Basically if you come through the Ujpest academy and your name is Janos, odds are you could be pretty decent.

415705354_janosgk.thumb.jpg.2d915c3c8138a707517cddf94277e499.jpg

I have already promoted the fellow to be the back-up GK for the senior side. He even had to play a few games due to Popovic being out injured. He has played 6 in all, and is yet to concede a goal.

Finally another decent looking prospect for the defense - Csaba actually came through in the first year but recently has been really developing well, and has now been sent out on loan for 6 months.

csaba.thumb.jpg.baf5456ad31c65813e6be38376b0eb50.jpg

So that is a total of 4 good prospects in 2 seasons, not too shabby at all.

And while we are here, let's take a look at the preview for this season.

1381690822_intakepreviewnew.jpg.5dcbd95cc307b5ab70600fb5adaef566.jpg

Another golden generation, and I am excited about having a Croatian player in the mix!

UJPEST FC - 2022-23

Let's first take a look at our attempt to qualify for the Champions League proper.

1663232494_uclfix.jpg.3c9a861f0a4e2fabab0a8b4a0f67cd4c.jpg

Gutted!! We did so, so well to get past both Lech & Malmo. Then we were up against our senior affiliate Slavia, and we definitely 100% deserved to go through the tie. And THIS is how they won it.

1415574333_lastminwtf.thumb.jpg.2579bb616a358ec30a1e6b8e31d69b5c.jpg

I have absolutely no fricking idea where that extra time came from! The highlight started after the 96 minute mark. Insane!

If we did get through we would have had to play Trabzonspor in the play-off and that would have been very difficult indeed. But right now, reaching the UCL group stages really is the holy grail. Anyway, into the Europa league then.

Now, let's take a look at our LEAGUE CAMPAIGN for the first half of the season.

2143162121_ligafix.jpg.5896c0cfe2f8d782f2b68d744b4f3c1d.jpg

A great start but some worrying results off late.

derby4.thumb.jpg.2fb17c01660229e95caa7e92f2c262b7.jpg

The first derby of the season resulted in a very unjust home defeat to a highly contentious penalty. Looks like the mighty Ferencvaros are resorting to some underhand tactics to compete with us . It is now 5 derbies played for me, and just the 1 win. We really need to start correcting that soon.

497596712_midwaytable.jpg.eec037af0af7541dae6c61c4eaf89321.jpg

And so with that we have actually dropped off first place for the first time in a while. It is actually refreshing to see Ferencvaros fight back this season - we may actually have a proper title race on our hands.

934322206_poorconversion.jpg.093edf55308fe803c9fefd562ee43e5c.jpg

The proper is clear as day - it is typical FM second season syndrome. My team cannot score anymore. Our conversion rate is tied worst in the league, with the bottom side. We dominate game after game, yet conspire to drop points. There is no solution, but to keep plugging on.

attendances.jpg.d0fadb5c91cef4ba2c3c21326984d0ce.jpg

On the upside, I was very happy to see this. Our attendances have been steadily climbing, and we should hopefully soon be the best supported team in Hungary.

Europa League money is nothing to sneeze at in Eastern Europe. It might even be enough to pay all your expenses at this time!

Also as long as you average 2.00/match or more you WILL be in the title discussion. This makes the Budapest Derby against Ferencvaros all the more important.

Good Luck with your season.

Yes I agree. Our balance is up to almost 7 million now which is great for us. Most of the money has been pumped into constantly improving the facilities.

And yes, I am about to play the 2nd derby of the season now!

Tough losses in both the qualifiers and the derby, but otherwise Andras is pleased with your progress (though I confess I don’t remember which club he supported so maybe he wouldn’t be happy at all).

Some really good youth prospects too! You’d be excited to get those at a top club, and the nice thing about playing in smaller leagues is you can play them sooner.

Hah. Let's hope Andras was from the violet part of Budapest :)

Yes definitely agree with your point on the youth prospects and for me it's a big draw of managing in these sorts of leagues. They would never get a look in if we were in England or Germany.

UJPEST FC - 2022-23

The Europa League Campaign

So after losing the 3rd CL qualifier against Slavia Prague, we dropped into the Europa League. Where, a group of Dinamo Zagreb, PAOK, and Slavia Prague (again) awaited us.

This is how we got on:

1930122148_europafix.jpg.ae19d398a72ca5c36430ea144ad3a674.jpg

Really happy about this, especially the final day result which ensured we finished at the top of the group.

19021821_uelgroup.jpg.f55e07814c0c4409e122025823d1a835.jpg

We are definitely here to make a mark in Europe!

The rivalry ensues

2131193800_janfeb.jpg.03d6f7d8f87660aa312cc7e96eb3e5a5.jpg

A good start after the winter break leaves the table like this going into the 2nd derby of the season (and my 6th overall).

467176711_tablenow.jpg.529a63a8fe41ede7fff5989e3e5ba636.jpg

Also responsible for Ferencvaros's first sell-out of the season

sellout.jpg.b2ab817d2e04cbd7040982c7a2fcfc26.jpg

And this is how it goes.

derby5.thumb.jpg.71608e701186c6a6c6ad0aac72eeea69.jpg

We finally get one over them with a huge away win at the Groupama! Opening up a 4 point lead as well.

Love the fact that home-grown legend Simon came off the bench to score the winner.

We should retain the title from here.

Meanwhile the Europa draw has been made, and it's not an easy one. But its only one leg and its at home - anything can happen.

All on the Derby, sounds like a fitting way to decide the title and to get the win, even sweeter after a few struggles against them before!

Bayer Leverkusen, man thats seems tough, could be a step too far at this point in time but let's hope the boys can bring their "A" game!

Thank you! Our last league game of the season is also Ferencvaros at home, so it may still come down to that. I like the fact that they are putting up a fight this season.

Leverkusen are definitely stronger, but if we do have a chance it's by having a one-legged tie at home. Let's see.

Well done in the EURO group stages.  Leverkusen looks tough but you never know.

Excellent work in the league!  Andras (who is now a pretend fan from the purple part of Budapest, cause who knows?) did a double fist pump knowing that Ujpest finally got one over Ferencvasori.  He will try and catch the Leverkusen games on TV...

League

The league title ended up being simpler than I had imagined. No final day drama with our Budapest derby at home against Ferencvaros - they had dropped too many points before that.

836353266_leaguefixend.jpg.c02142a8866fa84576e569a654f1a43c.jpg

Even though we lost another home derby, it did not matter. This was the final table.

847674152_finaltable.jpg.7f6b64a82b78e1d23a795a3be3e60ff8.jpg

And that makes it successive titles for the club! 22 league championships now, still 10 behind our rivals.

Hungarian Cup

215340849_cupfixtue.jpg.40d45afb337776a9493e661e95cba731.jpg

We made short work of pretty much every team we faced to reach a third successive final. Pleased to finally get one over Fehervar as well.

975065148_budapestfinal.jpg.e166ebbc880556d1242c52067d9ee1c7.jpg

And so the date was set. It would be the Grand Budapest Derby in the final at the Puskas Arena.

Could we make it a league and cup double?

649848320_cupfinaldef.thumb.jpg.490b2363b26ef6bc155426a14df8691d.jpg

Well, the answer sadly was NO. And what a crushing defeat.

Although we honestly can't have many complaints. We just did not play well at all. The red card did us no favors, and their winner came deep into stoppage time which was crushing. Just when I was hoping to re-group for ET. Successive final defeats in the Cup, but this one certainly hurt the most.

1552524319_derbies.jpg.d7d9d411b6b5401980fa0087fe925c99.jpg

This is our Budapest derby record since I took over. 8 played, 2 wins, 5 defeats. We must do better.

The league + cup double will have to wait.

Europa League

1848711081_bayergame.thumb.jpg.00e8518de997d8c54f0d8cad3fb5f476.jpg

We bravely battled Leverkusen at home and managed to edge a 1-0 win, Dienes with the goal from a corner.

1554427515_rangersdraw.jpg.3e5f83267af687ff4449f20ebdf82094.jpg

Pretty happy with this draw, probably the weakest side left in the competition (I am sure Rangers thought the same).

1563873488_rangershome.thumb.jpg.8b3bafa672376f824e984e9e774fc156.jpg

We absolutely crushed them at home - should have won by more!

318386085_rangersaway.thumb.jpg.5644213dc740c620dd050fcb016eff58.jpg

Went down away from home but managed to get through still on away goals. Over the course of the two legs, we definitely deserved it! Into the Europa league semis we go!

1039042554_salzbuegdeaw.jpg.ed4df2c0a02f378e602c2a0e47a5026c.jpg

Another decent draw I thought - still avoiding any really big clubs.

90477450_salzhome.thumb.jpg.ab811ff64d677174a0550f55ee95d9ee.jpg

Not a great result at home, Salzburg much stronger than I expected.

586366218_salzaway.thumb.jpg.e70a8a18373e39ee9394d8cb4bd910dd.jpg

And we sadly went down fighting in the away leg. They were always in control, truth be told. We huffed and puffed but could not find a goal.

Still a hugely memorable season in Europe for us.

480683247_eurofix.jpg.5b6e347c27ddec5e120873c81b9d2a15.jpg

Reaching the semi-finals the first time of asking is definitely something to be proud of. At the same time I cannot help but feel like we had good fixtures, and I don't know if we will have another shot of reaching a final without playing a really big side. However, no complaints about this season. A super run.

What a season on the face of it, but it leaves that bitter taste in your mouth for the "what ifs".

Those damn away goal rules, you love it when it's your team that wins because of it (Rangers) and hate it when its the opposition (Salzburg). Bitter sweet on that one seems like you gave Red Bull Salzburg all they could handle.

As for Europe.....getting RB Salzburg was not an ideal team for you to play. Even though you had a chance.

TBH though, I actually like that they are maintaining a strong team as I do want a continuing challenge domestically and some fun Budapest derbies.

2023 Youth Intake

I forgot to mention, we of course also got our annual intake in March.

1115642090_intakein.jpg.8c4b4d934c1f8b057ed4d592e3b9b9ba.jpg

The Croat who was promised, does look quite good. I am very excited about his development and potentially becoming our right sided midfielder in the future.

pesic.thumb.jpg.4368e4d571346c0f5faccfb38fd99ecc.jpg

He's already had his first team debut since, although he just missed the youngest player record which continues to be held by Janos Dienes.

sza.thumb.jpg.4777bfc012929533ecf2b872992949ae.jpg

Meanwhile, Szabadfi (that's a proper mouthful) adds to the center half production line from the Ujpest academy.

The only surprise this year was no Janos coming through

TEAM REVIEW

The squad stats from a successful second full season at Ujpest.

97917986_squadstats2.jpg.c4e6eb44ab2b8a6d162704b692b2a740.jpg

Most of the team hit average ratings of over 7.00 which is always nice to see. We had some top performers across the board this season who will be highlighted below.

We also had one major addition to the squad in the January transfer window that I neglected to mention so far, so here he is.

balogh.thumb.jpg.99ebe413dcdda81c7e4b5f9e4f68e3ca.jpg

Balogh is a full Hungarian international who joined us from cross-town rivals Honved for 500k, becoming our biggest signing. He has been decent so far, if unspectacular. I see him as a (very) poor man's Zlatan with that excellent jumping & flair. Fun fact - I've actually managed him before (briefly), on FM19 at Hull City.

Now I have to come straight to the goal machine, Jan Matousek. What a signing he has turned out to be. I don't think in the past couple of editions of the game, I've had a player plunder over 40 goals in a season. Absolutely incredible!

1302711619_jannow.thumb.jpg.49daed3950eee04a79af80748a1a24a6.jpg

Next up, has to be the pride of the Ujpest academy, Janos Dienes. Another incredible season from the lad who is now a mainstay of the national team as well, and amazing also picked up the Player of the Year award for the second season in a row. And he still cannot officially have a beer. He is now wanted by a few larger European clubs as well.

janoss.thumb.jpg.326370e92ead7a1ef3ec95b42f8150ae.jpg

poty.jpg.89dadb38491000b4616d5fe49446c2dc.jpg

Bolla had a great first season with us, and I am really happy that he will be joining us permanently, although we will again be breaking our transfer record by paying 750k for his services.

137796205_bollanow.thumb.jpg.daf36fd835f250e5eb8231959bd8ba1b.jpg

There are a few more players to highlight, but I am going to put them in a spoiler so as not to clog up the page.

Spoiler

Nemanja Antonov - our DW on the left side, and set piece expert

674866617_antonovnow.thumb.jpg.b73f80c3546292d830d047d77d7902ca.jpg

Vincent Onovo - the battler in the middle of the park who has recently taken up Hungarian nationality.

1394922460_onovonow.thumb.jpg.b1b25cfec1cca45dd89531137b4b679c.jpg

Aleksandar Popovic, our #1, who is also now being scouted by clubs across Europe.

1055336790_poponow.thumb.jpg.1f85f1cf89032b939b8cfa7bfa895776.jpg

Ivan Bakhar, our F9 had another solid season, although his attributes show no development.

685247282_bakharnow.thumb.jpg.3544eaa734e70c53f5fb4a9bb5c9fe5d.jpg

Krisztian Simon is a certified Ujpest legend and continues to score important goals for us even though he is now in decline.

1722032013_simonnow.thumb.jpg.2c08464d353ca441b5633040e82cfdad.jpg

Giorgi Beridze always plays well either as SS or LW

beridze.thumb.jpg.5e75be6fd0fd18b6aaa1801b76ad4f53.jpg

And finally, Lasha Dvali has been another ever-present, and what makes it better is that he was a free signing from Ferencvaros

Club Improvements

The money that we have been making (especially from UEFA) has pretty much all been pumped back into the club to improve facilities across the board.

Thanks to which we now have

- great training facilities

- good youth facilities

- exceptional junior coaching

- exceptional youth recruitment

But the most significant upgrade is yet to come.

Yes, they have sanctioned a huge upgrade to the stadium, taking it from 12.5k all the way to almost 19k. We have been hitting quite a few sell-outs this season, so this should be big for us in the long term.

The other interesting thing of course, is that for the coming season we will be relocating to the Groupama, which means a ground share with arch-rivals Ferencvaros. Now that should be interesting.

That's a healthy increase in capacity and doesn't seem to be that pricey from some of the stadium upgrade costs I have seen previously here! Euro money definitely the biggest impact for improving teams and a deep run in a competition just secures that future even more.

Absolutely agree on both counts. I am wondering if they are putting up some cheap plastic seats  hope not!

Andras bought a Dienes jersey and might just head home for a game or two to check out the improved stadium! He won’t care if they’re cheap plastic seats so long as the football on display keeps as good as it has so far!  But yeah - that Dienes kid is class! And he’ll only get better.  Wonder how long you’ll be able to keep hold of him if he keeps improving…But the money you’d get for him would keep the club going for a while too!

I think you might have to do some quality control before there are fans in attendance on those seats....

Oh we will definitely do everything we can to hold onto him!

Andras better be making plans to be there for the first Budapest derby of the new season...

League & Club Standings

Its the summertime which means its time to take a look at how rankings & reputations have changed in the past season.

The league continues to move in the right direction, up to 32nd now, obviously still a LONG way to go.

The league TV money continues to show improvement with another 20% rise

The club however has clearly made some GIANT strides this year, rising up a whopping 350 places and breaking into the top 100 :hammer:

Still only the 3rd most reputable team in Hungary though...

We did however top the sponsorship table domestically.

And season tickets are also moving in the right direction, which bodes well for the stadium expansion.

Major Update

There is also one other major update to report from the summer, as the national team found themselves without a manager when Steve McLaren left to take another job.

So this is now officially a club + country save!

At the time of taking over, this is the qualifying group for Euro 2024. We will have our work cut out. Starting off with a double header against Montenegro.

Congratulations on becoming the Hungarian National Team Manager.

That is Matus's aim as well, but in Slovakia.

Thank you, and his time will surely come as well! We are taking over the region :D

Congratulations on the title, I expected it to be much closer than the final table was! Shame you could not quite do the double wit the Magyar Kupa but the League title softens the blow.

I love to see a full club vision board, that's when you know you are doing well when there are 20 different areas to target and achieve! Will be interesting to see if Ferencvaros will come back at you next season or not, you would think they would...

I looked at the chapter in the book again about the 1950's Hungarian teams and think you could recreate the formation with 5-4-1

A great F9 is what makes it .

Think of two M's. on top of each other for movement and shape.

I have managed to implement the WM tactic which was utilised by Erno Erbstein and the Grande Torino which actually is pretty effective on FM21, happy to share with you guys if you'd like to have a look and potentially one which you could use on this save as an option?

Yes absolutely, I would like them to maintain the challenge. Don't want the situation to get boring domestically.
