Pretty sure Željezničar are one of the more historically successful teams in Bosnia if you look at their trophies as I really recognise the team name.

If I was you, I would have taken the job from the off.

Yeah. I don't think I was ever going to get the job. Too early in my career I think. :(

I wasn't overly keen until I saw their facilities.  :applause:

Long Throws. Apr 2024.

I'm starting to pay a little more attention to who is doing what and where at attacking set-pieces and with that in mind I'm starting to see a reward in terms of goals scored from long throws. Remember that Kovačević (SRB) 6'6" * L.Throw has a long throw attribute of  17 and has the PPM possesses a long flat throw.

9f34dae9c597360e281618bd5005fe66.png

There is still work to be done because you will see that the recipient of each long bomb was a different player and we're not really set up properly yet.

Marjanović (SRB) * is a central midfielder who is 6'3"

Anes Mašić (BIH) is my DLF who is only 5'10".

Ćirković (SRB) is my left sided utility player, (who was playing as a left winger, and he's only 5'8"

It's a shame that Kovačević (SRB) 6'6" * L.Throw can't throw it to himself because he would be a phenomenal target at 6'6".

[Edit]

I should add that we're taking short corners because I felt uncomfortable scoring so many from near/far post deliveries. At the moment we're creating lots of chances from our short corner routine even if we're not quite finishing them off. I'm sure as the standard of player at the club improves we will get better at converting these opportunities.

What's the throw in routine you are using?

I am struggling since we moved to a 352 although the current routine was really successful with a 442 strangely enough

1x Att FP
1x Att NP
2x GF
1x Att from edge
1x Lurk
1x Come short
2x Stay back
1x taker
1x GK

It's just a matter of working out who is best where.

NK TOŠK Tešanj, Bosnia. Apr 2024.

M:tel Premijer Liga. We might be unbeaten this month, but it's not enough. The equaliser that we conceded to Široki Brijeg broke our hearts and spirit. It was the 95th minute and we deserved to win and had we done would have resulted in a 4 point swing, (which is what the difference is now), and the only reason we drew to Tuzla is as a result of the previous draw. I'm sure of that. We have 4 games left and 3 of them are against decent opposition. I think there is next to no chance of us winning all 4 and that's what is needed if we are to have any chance of becoming Champions.

Bosnian Cup. When it's not your day it's just not your day. We saw 1 penalty saved and then saw another miss the target completely, and they were given a late penalty that of course they converted to see them into the Final. It's ridiculous that I don't have my GK on pens. It properly cost us here. :seagull:

Finances. Investments from El Presidente are now up to £1,046,910 and we have a healthy bank balance of £748,084. We're almost guaranteed European football next season, (which is a huge achievement as this is our 1st season in the top flight remember).

@Jimbokav1971  "It's just a matter of working out who is best where."

Are the NP and FP players the best headers (CB's) or better off the ball (Strikers and AM's)?

The truth is that there isn't a simple answer to this one. They all play a part; but my thinking here is that we have to win the ball before the game decides whether it ends up with a shot on target or not. Heading doesn't determine if the player wins the header, so at this stage it's out of my thinking, (or at least moved to the back of my mind).

Then it gets a little harder. You have strikers who are likely to have good off the ball scores allowing them to lose their markers, but the players with the best jumping and strength attributes are generally going to be your centre-backs so you have to choose who goes where. I have 2 centre-backs and 2 strikers and I have 4 key positions to full. I keep the defenders on their correct sides and ask them to attack near and far post.

I have the best "finisher" of the 2 strikers attacking the ball from the edge of the area, (where his off the ball movement will hopefully allow him to get free and get a strike on goal given half a chance, and the more "technical" of the 2 is asked to "lurk". I used to have a playmaker lurking but I have found a striker who can run with the ball is more effective.

This isn't a one size fits all situation though because if you have a giant of a player, (my 6'6" left back for example), then he should be attacking 1 of the posts, (except that he's also throwing the ball in so can't be in 2 places at once). It's exactly the same if you have a big DM or a TM or something. It's not about the positions/roles of the players. It's about their individual characteristics.

Once we win the ball, then and only then does heading come into it and it might be a headed shot or a knock-down or a glancing ball across goal or whatever. It really doesn't matter how good the player is at heading if he 1st hasn't won the ball, (which is not influenced by the heading attribute).

120bfdefd8a2361c49c304336a23b38f.png

I don't like this as a definition. I don't think it's clear enough. I think of it as the ability to pass or shoot via a header and it influences both the power and the accuracy of the pass/shot. What it doesn't do is influence at all whether the player will win the header.

* Please note that this is my opinion rather than fact.

I appreciate your thinking and opinion. I will reflect on it with my own teams. Also I don't have a 17 Long throw....but if I ever have the chance again.....

What are the characteristics of the GF players....I watch a lot of soccer but don't understand the intricacies, so all of this is helpful. (I became a fan and FM player later in life FM14, but I treat it more like a strategy game)

Everything is relative.

I already had 2 big useless blokes attacking the posts so I want something different. I use my strikers because they are generally the best finishers. From time to time I have had a DLP with great technique and very good long shots and in that situation he would make a good lurker, (although I still like the player in that position to advance with the ball). They don't have to be your strikers, but I want to offer a clinical threat rather than a brute force threat, so in my squad that means my 2 strikers.

Something I also think about is what happens when and if we lose the ball. What have I asked players to do and how will they react once we are no longer in possession? For a start I want to keep the wide players on the correct side of the pitch. If we have a throw-in on the right hand side of the pitch then I will be asking the right winger to offer the short option. On the left flank it's the left winger. Before you get bogged down about this foot or that foot, (I have my preference but it's largely irrelevant here), if your left winger is being asked to show short for a throw-in on the right side of the pitch, the 1st thing he will try to do when you lose possession is revert to the left side of the pitch. If both your wingers are doing that, (and both centre-backs are attacking the opposition goal), and both strikers have gone up, and your left back is taking the throw-in, then it doesn't give many numbers to defend the counter.

There is no right and wrong way. Just look at what you want. (I want 2 big strong blokes to attack the ball and 2 blokes are good at putting the ball in the ne), and then see what works best with what you have available. If 1 of them doesn;t quite fit, (I have a few shortish defenders), then it might highlight the need to delve into the transfer market.

I've thought about this. I'm not sure that he's a Sugar-Daddy exactly, (but then again I've never had one so I wouldn't know), but he's certainly generous with his investment.

Got it.

I have a theory (may be completely wrong) that the long-throw routines only work for formations which use wide players. It's never worked for me in a 3-5-2 or some such set-up. My reasoning for this is that the natural position the wide player takes under "Go Forward" (so say the AML or AMR) is key as it draws some extra bodies out towards the edge of the area, away from the goal. Frees up the space for the eventual goal-scorers.

On my last save I had well over 10 goals in a season from long throws and my DL (Josh Tymon, 16 for Long Throws and the PPM) got 14 assists. Our formation was a 4-3-3 or a 4-4-2.

Current save - 1.5 seasons in and 1 goal. Playing a 3-4-2-1 with no attacking wide players.

I can see where you are coming from, bur I'm not sure I agree.

Although I have wingers playing in the ML and MR slots, only 1 of them go forward for long throws. The winger who's side the throw is on comes short for the ball, although the opposite winger does go forward. So I effectively have 6 attacking options in/around the box, but the winger he is rarely involved. I have changed things round many times though so I will keep an eye on it going forward.

NK TOŠK Tešanj, Bosnia. Apr 2024.

We may have blown the league, but at least we will be competing in Europe next season for the 1st time in this save.

M:tel Premijer Liga. We battered Zrinjski, but only led 1-0 and sure as eggs is eggs we conceded another penalty in the 95th min and they somehow walked away with a point. I think we are basically just running out of steam at the end of the season. We went into the last game of the season just 1 point adrift of Široki Brijeg, but we could only manage a final day draw and as Široki Brijeg also drew it meant that we had blown a glorious chance at the league title. Yeah we only lost 1 of our last 16 league games, but we drew 6 of them and that's what cost us. There were quite a few games there that we should have won comfortably. The number of late penalties we conceded during this period is ridiculous.

Facilities.

As we start getting attendances bigger than the size of our new stadium, I wonder more and more about the decision to build such a small new stadium. I have looked at the editor and I can see that the max size that the old stadium could have been increased to was only 5,250. Assuming that the new stadium will have a higher expansion capacity, (I will check when the stadium is built), then maybe this doesn't seem such a weird decision after all.

End of Season Summary. May 2024

M:tel Premijer Liga. I should be really happy with a Runners Up spot at the 1st time of asking, but we properly blew it. I mean we absolutely choked. Even as late as the very last game, a win would have seen us crowned Champions.

We were never lower than 5th all season.

c624ed06f576c8c581adbd2cab236138.png

Bosnian Cup. The loss in the Semi still rankles as we failed to score either of 2 penalties we took, and then paid the price late on as Velež Mostar were awarded and converted their own penalty. From next season my GK's will be taking all penalties.

Kovačević (SRB) 6'6" * L.Throw is probably my favourite player at the club because of his size, and his long throw attribute and linked PPM. You can see that he's not an obvious wingback, but he's the best I've got and it allowed him to play more league games at an early age when he possibly wouldn't have got a game at centre-half.

90e99789c059f18bb10e6507d3b161c0.png

Nedzad Besic (BIH) * had a good 1st season with us, contributing 2 goals and 9 assists.

Müller (AUT) (BIH) 6'0" * will be leaving shortly on a free I'm afraid. I'm desperate for him to re-sign, but he just isn't interested and won't even enter into discussions about a new contract. He's going! Similar to our left back, he's probably got a little too much centre-half in him and not enough wingback.

[Edit]

After the end of the season he suddenly agreed to discussions and agreed to a 4 year contract as long as he had a £400k min fee release clause. :applause:

37318c217658f1756ac561a3533cac32.png

Janković (SRB) 6'3" is just what I was looking for in a centre-half and you can see now why I'm happy to let Kovačević (SRB) 6'6" * L.Throw play at left back.

445cdec1131a8c33d2c0bad2fe62d2a4.png

Nešović (SRB) * was brought in to be 1st choice as our DLF, but he has struggled and has largely been used from the bench this season. Next season he will have to step up as we start playing in Europe.

Plojović (SRB) has had a storming season and has completely obliterated the M:tel Premijer Liga goal-scoring record, (which was previously 16 and is now set at 25). People often get a bit get-up about 5.0 CA and PA players, but I would point out that Plojović (SRB) has both 3.0 CA and PA and was still our most important player.

Nation club coefficients. Even without us being involved in European competition, there has been a marked improvement in performances by Bosnian clubs in recent years. 1.500 to 0.750 and the 3.000 2.375 and 5.000. That's quite a rise and hopefully we will be able to help it along a little this year.

Interview. Jul 2024

Sloboda Tuzla play in the 2nd tier, (which is not really ideal), but they are 1 of the big-hitters at that level.

I'm attracted by the ambition, (they want promotion immediately), and also by the Youth Recruitment level (12), but I just think it's too much of a backwards step.

NK TOŠK Tešanj, Bosnia. Jul 2024

M:tel Premijer Liga. We start the new league season off with a visit to Sarajevo, who despite finishing outside the top 4 last season are a big club in Bosnia. It might be a new season but the trend of last season continues as we concede not 1 but 2 penalties and only draw the opening game.

Europa Conference. We strolled through the 1st Qualy Rnd, but came badly unstuck against Skënderbeu of Albania in the 1st leg of the 2nd Qualy Rnd, (despite being the better team). My target was to get to the Group Stage at the 1st attempt and it would seem that we have our work cut out to get there.

M:tel Premijer Liga. After conceding 2 penalties in the 1st league game of the season, we somehow concede 2 more in the 2nd league game.  4 penalties conceded in just 2 games. It's not the best start to the league campaign. Would you believe that we conceded a 5th penalty in the 3rd game. 3 games and 5 penalties. This is not a joke. :( After 5 penalties conceded in just 3 games, we finally don't give one away against Zvijezda and obviously keep a clean sheet. That should be the end of it right? No. We concede an 83rd min pen against Željezničar. That's 6 penalties conceded in the opening 5 league games of the season. I have never experienced anything like this.

Plojović (SRB) who scored so freely last season, started off ok in Europe but is really struggling in the league to such an extent that he hasn't managed a shot of any type, (on or off target), in any of the last 3 games.

Anes Mašić (BIH) has really saved our bacon this month, with 6 goals in 6 league games. I dread to think where we might have been without his goals.

Euro Conference. We gave it a good go and for a while it looked like we might do it, but they countered us very effectively and their speedy striker finished with a hat-trick. It was a shame to crash out of Europe at the 2nd hurdle, but them's the breaks.

M:tel Premijer Liga. We're unbeaten in 7 and have only lost once in 12 league games, which all things considered isn't too shabby at all when you consider that we have conceded no less than 7 penalties in the opening 14 games of the season.

This suggests that he has conceded 0 of 7 penalties faced.

M:tel Premijer Liga. Wow this seems a slog at the moment. We're just rubbish.

Zrinjski are good so losing to them is ok, if not quite good. The Cup loss was our Reserves and let's even not talk about penalties. The Radnik game came after 2 consecutive losses and then the Željezničar game should be considered a positive result because we didn't lose. I'm hoping that we can push on from here now, but I'm really not convinced.

NK TOŠK Tešanj, Bosnia. Jan & Feb 2024

Winter break. I needed to do something to change the cycle. I'm not sure what has been going wrong this season, but the same players, (or better), are performing at a poorer level than last season, (for no obvious reason). We had the Winter break where we would be able to train, but our facilities are poor so how much is training going to benefit them? Instead I thought I might try something different and rather than just train, instead we would play 2 friendly matches each and every week.

M:tel Premijer Liga. I know this is only 1 win, and I know it was against a team 2nd bottom in the league, but it was a hugely encouraging performance and we should have won by more. We have 4 games in March and it will be interesting to see where we are at the end of the month.

I always try to schedule friendlies during extended Midseason Breaks, but often I give the players days off around the Holidays if necessary. (Only if I am in England that I don't).

M:tel Premijer Liga. We suffered 2 big away defeats to 1st and 3rd, but managed to beat 4th away and 10th at home. I know our 1st season in Europe was a bit of an anti-climax, but I still want to finish in the top 3 and give it another go. We have 8 games left

Yeah, a few friendlies is always good, but this was overkill I think.

NK TOŠK Tešanj, Bosnia. Apr 2025

M:tel Premijer Liga. We were a little unlucky not to get something out of the Zrinjski game, and other than that we came out on top in a tough month. We have 4 games left of the season and 3 of them are at home. 1 of the games is against Borac (BL) above us and if we beat them then I'm confident of finishing above them. Whether or not it will be enough to finish above Sarajevo in 3rd remains to be seen, They're unbeaten in the last 9, but 4 of them have been draws. Even if they draw 2 of their remaining games and we win all 4, we will still likely be behind them on goal difference.

NK TOŠK Tešanj, Bosnia. May 2025

M:tel Premijer Liga. When we conceded the equaliser in the last game against Borac (BL) I thought we had blown European qualification, but Zrinjski lost to spare our blushes. We have qualified for Europe again and have 2 lots of Facility upgrades in the pipeline so things are at least moving in the right direction.

New contract. I'm not really feeling the love at TOŠK and I would love a bigger club to come and snap me up. When I say "bigger" club, I really mean a club with better facilities.

6c793e5eb60a91842e2fe2c560db328d.png

We have a transfer budget of £700k and a I can always move some of that over to wage budget too. I think I need to be a bit bolder in the transfer market, but the problem is that players don't want to play for us. I think I'm going to decline the contract and see if we qualify for Europe and maybe see if someone else comes in and offers me something.

Facilities.

NK TOŠK Tešanj, Bosnia. Jun 2025

Poached. On the plus side, we aren't actually producing really good players at the moment, so it's not a huge loss that we lose them. On the other hand, everything is relative and these players are good in comparison to the average player that we're producing.

Something that has always confused me is what determines when the poached player will come through the intake at the new club. We are told each player is 15, but this of course is wrong. This is the age they will eventually be when they come through the Intake.

As a standard rule, players generally come through 3 years later, but because the date of Intake can change from Nation to Nation, this confuses the matter. Intakes come through in Bosnia in April, so that's our starting point. The top player on the list who was poached by  Velež Mostar in Jul 2023 had missed the Apr 2023 intake, so the 1st intake he could have come through was the Apr 2024 intake and the 2nd intake he could have come through was Apr 2025. He hasn't come through at any of them so I would expect to see him promoted from their Academy in the Apr 2026 intake which will be the 3rd intake since he was poached. I "think" this is the case, (but it's been a while and my memory is fuzzy), so I will check as we go so that we know 100% for sure.

Yeah, if I was playing a one-club save then I would be happy at our development, but as we are meant to be a Journeyman I need to be more aware of potential moves. Particularly realistic moves. At the moment our star seems to be on the rise, so I'm happy to look at bigger clubs and higher rep Nations going forward, but if I get sacked at any point during the save I will be stepping back to a Semi-Pro club, and if I get sacked again may even force myself into an amateur club position, (which I don't like).

Just as a sidenote, it is incredibly frequent that coaches/players move from Bosnia to either Serbia or Croatia and back, depending in which region of Bosnia they played/coached. Considering you're in Tešanj, which is in near belly of the Bosnia (mostly Muslims living there, few percent Croats and less Serbs) you could honestly go and make a move for few seasons in either neighboring country and come back later with Željezničar, Široki.

Yeah. I have been thinking about the Geography of the area and this will absolutely have an impact on any potential moves.

Welcome to Sarajevo, (I mean Mostar, Bosnia). Jul 2025.

Despite having qualified for Europe again with TOŠK, my heart wasn't in it and I was dreading the coming season. So with that in mind I was ecstatic to be approached by HŠK Zrinjski Mostar to become their new manager.

46a5fa634b64bfe136642619072a2ca5.png

I'm expected to lead the team into Europe every season, (and I don't see that as being a problem at all).

We have some good rivalries to keep an eye on

FK Velež Mostar are in the league below so I'm afraid I won't be able to resume rivalries with them.

NK Široki Brijeg were Champions last season and are there to be shot at.

FK Borac Banja Luka finished in 4th last season and missed out on Europe.

FK Željezničar Sarajevo won the Cup last season so will be in Europe, but performed poorly in the league and will be looking to do better.

FK Sarajevo were Runners Up in the league last season and will be there or thereabouts again this season.

I have never heard of Blaz Sliskovic, but he is a legend for good reason.

We all know about Luka Modric, but I certainly didn't know that he went on loan to this Bosnian club as a teenager in 2003/04.

Lamine Diarra played here for 2 seasons before moving on to Serbia & Turkey

1246574052692b2cb1d9919b5c3d9fde.png

I have never heard of Dragan Juranović, but he is a recent addition to the ICON list so that makes sense. He is the brother of Josip Juranović who I have heard of and managed in the game before. He would have been one of the best players at my old club.

We have money in the bank and haven't been overdrawn at the bank for a couple of years, (which is pretty impressive I think).

3a8a2acacc4390831f1cd7202e907cee.png

The reason their finances have been so consistently good is because they have been regularly selling players for decent money, while at the same time spending significantly less on their replacements. This could mean that we have a poorer quality of player now at the club, (but I don't think so).

Player sales

2021/22 1 player for £71,000
2022/23 3 players for £96,000
2023/24 3 players for £625,000
2024/25 5 players for £1,000,000

Player purchases

2021/22 1 player for £3,000
2022/23 2 players for £24,000
2023/24 4 players for £170,000
2024/25 4 players for £51,000

We have a decent sized transfer kitty and what I would call an ENORMOUS wage budget. It's more than double what I was spending at TOŠK.

5951c282c84a3ace11f4813264a508ed.png

Squad by CA. The 1 thing that concerns me initially looking at this is that I can see a Slovakian, 2 Serbs and 3 Croats in this top end of the squad. That's our quota of 6x FGN players right there already and possibly won't give me room for younger players who are more PA than CA based. Will have to keep an eye on that. :kriss:

5f5c58be5c9897b2ed7648765ee10bbb.png

Squad by PA. This is amazing news. We have no less than 8x 5.0 PA players, (and I can tell you now our best CA player here is going to be better than our best CA player at TOŠK). Even better is that every single one of the top 17 players listed by PA is Bosnian. :applause:I'm guessing that they are all products of a highly functioning Academy.

77d9eea373aa6bba3b139bcb4be8a383.png

Players valued at £100k+. What I had decided at TOŠK was that I would be more willing to sell the non-Bosnians for cash. If they had (BIH) as a 2nd Nationality then they would be considered Bosnian, because it was really just to limit the number of FGN players at the club. Although there are 9 non-Bosnians on the below list 2 of them also have (BIH) as a 2nd Nationality so only 7x FGN players on view here.

b78ffefaa67cf67673dc37a7821ed87f.png

GK. We look well set here with an obvious 1st choice player in Ćetković (BIH) (SRB) and an obvious high PA youngster in (24) Radosavljević (BIH)(SRB)*. The only real "problem" here is that our 1st choice GK is also a FGN player and I would be more inclined to sell him and play one of the others. After delving a little deeper, I actually prefer (21) Nuradinović (BIH) (CRO) as 1st choice, (because of his positioning), and I think I might just sell Ćetković (BIH) (SRB).  Maybe I will just start him, give him a chance and see how he goes.

5cb4771ae42cae503ae15f0a8100dec5.png

DL. This position is all about (23) Avdic (BIH) * despite the fact that he's only 17. He looks phenomenal!

15498d4e7ec680fe3210e9fcafd8de58.png

cf3b96095702f0ba19ff0803689b1646.png

DR. I think (23) Hasanbegovic (BIH) will be my long-term right back, although Sivac (BIH) (SRB) Stays Back will start as 1st choice. The "problem" with him is that I really don't like one of him PPM's and am trying to get him to unlearn it.

69d93c12f57780b32c99260713b8d555.png

55a70f89ea7643ba5b32ede5c4ffdad4.png

DC. Centre-half is not an area of strength, and I think I really could do with going out and splashing the cash on one. There is some potential there, but not much current ability.

7dbe34878da88e2e01599d4387504d25.png

ML & MR. We seem a little short of both quality and quantity on the left. Parađina (SRB) appears to be 1st choice on the right, but will be missing for the next few weeks. Stjepan Mikulić * will probably start in the short-term, although his future might be up front rather than out wide.

1b806368ca3f35ed18514e85ce62bccc.png

MC. There are some good positions in the centre-mid area, but we appear to be lacking a little in terms of playmakers, with the better players being more physical and destructive players rather than the technical playmakers. Of course you need both.

8ebe0b57dd61877085d154b4848c171c.png

SC. We're a little short of numbers up front but there is a little quality there. Certainly more quality than I have had at my other clubs in this save.

Pre-season. After taking over in the middle of pre-season, pre-season was unsurprisingly a bit of a shambles.

c529ec5f4d90f0579cf0c8058d06ab52.png

M:tel Premijer Liga. When we smashed defending Champions Široki Brijeg on opening day I thought we were going to romp to the title, but it hasn't quite worked out that way. We've got a pretty lop-sided squad and are short both at centre-half and up front. Being short of quality in both boxes is NOT a good mix.  My old club stuck 5 goals on us, (because of course they did), but after that I decided to slow down and take a little more care, to such an extent that I played the full match, (on comp highlights), against Krupa. We're playing some nice stuff but we could do with being more direct at times.

We're sitting 4th in the league, just 1 point behind 3rd which is our target. This 1st season is certainly one of rebuilding.

Transfers. We had quite a few FGN players at the club and I decided that these would be the ones I would be most interested in selling. Although I have only sold 2 players, negotiations have broken down during the sale of 3 others. I'm keen to keep the money coming in so that the board don't involve themselves too much. I don't plan on spending too much money until we have it to burn.

HŠK Zrinjski Mostar, Bosnia. Sep 2025

HŠK Zrinjski Mostar. An unbeaten month, but we were lucky to come out on top against league leaders Borac (BL) in a 9 goal thriller.

Transfers. I mentioned the board becoming involved in transfers in the last post and it has come back to haunt me.

The highest fee we have ever received for a player before is £550,00. so I can't really complain when we double it. The only problem with it is that it was for a striker, (and you might remember that we are short of strikers), and more than that it was for a young striker, (20 years old), and he's 1 of those "cheat" players with fantastic athletic ability. I hadn't managed to get him firing since my arrival, (but knew it was only a mater of time), and to see him sold from under me is really frustrating. I didn't protest the transfer but I did ask them to add a sell0on clause and although they agreed, they didn't actually manage it.

I always had it in my mind to sell this player because I really don't like 1 of his PPM's and I have other options at right back. He joined last season on a free so I'm happy to make £550k out of him and send him on his way with his PPM. Unfortunately the deal fell through and he's still here. :(
